User-Creator Feature Polarization in Recommender Systems with Dual InfluenceTao Lin, Kun Jin, Andrew Estornell et al.
Recommender systems serve the dual purpose of presenting relevant content to users and helping content creators reach their target audience. The dual nature of these systems naturally influences both users and creators: users' preferences are affected by the items they are recommended, while creators may be incentivized to alter their content to attract more users. We define a model, called user-creator feature dynamics, to capture the dual influence of recommender systems. We prove that a recommender system with dual influence is guaranteed to polarize, causing diversity loss in the system. We then investigate, both theoretically and empirically, approaches for mitigating polarization and promoting diversity in recommender systems. Unexpectedly, we find that common diversity-promoting approaches do not work in the presence of dual influence, while relevancy-optimizing methods like top-$k$ truncation can prevent polarization and improve diversity of the system.
Unified Continuous Generative ModelsPeng Sun, Yi Jiang, Tao Lin
Recent advances in continuous generative models, including multi-step approaches like diffusion and flow-matching (typically requiring 8-1000 sampling steps) and few-step methods such as consistency models (typically 1-8 steps), have demonstrated impressive generative performance. However, existing work often treats these approaches as distinct paradigms, resulting in separate training and sampling methodologies. We introduce a unified framework for training, sampling, and analyzing these models. Our implementation, the Unified Continuous Generative Models Trainer and Sampler (UCGM-{T,S}), achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance. For example, on ImageNet 256x256 using a 675M diffusion transformer, UCGM-T trains a multi-step model achieving 1.30 FID in 20 steps and a few-step model reaching 1.42 FID in just 2 steps. Additionally, applying UCGM-S to a pre-trained model (previously 1.26 FID at 250 steps) improves performance to 1.06 FID in only 40 steps. Code is available at: https://github.com/LINs-lab/UCGM.

VLA-Pruner: Temporal-Aware Dual-Level Visual Token Pruning for Efficient Vision-Language-Action InferenceZiyan Liu, Yeqiu Chen, Hongyi Cai et al.
Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models have shown great promise for embodied AI, yet the heavy computational cost of processing continuous visual streams severely limits their real-time deployment. Token pruning (keeping salient visual tokens and dropping redundant ones) has emerged as an effective approach for accelerating Vision-Language Models (VLMs), offering a solution for efficient VLA. However, these VLM-specific token pruning methods select tokens based solely on semantic salience metrics (e.g., prefill attention), while overlooking the VLA's intrinsic dual-system nature of high-level semantic understanding and low-level action execution. Consequently, these methods bias token retention toward semantic cues, discard critical information for action generation, and significantly degrade VLA performance. To bridge this gap, we propose VLA-Pruner, a versatile plug-and-play VLA-specific token prune method that aligns with the dual-system nature of VLA models and exploits the temporal continuity in robot manipulation. Specifically, VLA-Pruner adopts a dual-level importance criterion for visual token retention: vision-language prefill attention for semantic-level relevance and action decode attention, estimated via temporal smoothing, for action-level importance. Based on this criterion, VLA-Pruner proposes a novel dual-level token selection strategy that adaptively preserves a compact, informative set of visual tokens for both semantic understanding and action execution under given compute budget. Experiments show that VLA-Pruner achieves state-of-the-art performance across multiple VLA architectures and diverse robotic tasks.

Deep Learning for IoTTao Lin
Deep learning and other machine learning approaches are deployed to many systems related to Internet of Things or IoT. However, it faces challenges that adversaries can take loopholes to hack these systems through tampering history data. This paper first presents overall points of adversarial machine learning. Then, we illustrate traditional methods, such as Petri Net cannot solve this new question efficiently. To help IoT data analysis more efficient, we propose a retrieval method based on deep learning (recurrent neural network). Besides, this paper presents a research on data retrieval solution to avoid hacking by adversaries in the fields of adversary machine leaning. It further directs the new approaches in terms of how to implementing this framework in IoT settings based on adversarial deep learning.

Multi-variable LSTM neural network for autoregressive exogenous modelTian Guo, Tao Lin
In this paper, we propose multi-variable LSTM capable of accurate forecasting and variable importance interpretation for time series with exogenous variables. Current attention mechanism in recurrent neural networks mostly focuses on the temporal aspect of data and falls short of characterizing variable importance. To this end, the multi-variable LSTM equipped with tensorized hidden states is developed to learn hidden states for individual variables, which give rise to our mixture temporal and variable attention. Based on such attention mechanism, we infer and quantify variable importance. Extensive experiments using real datasets with Granger-causality test and the synthetic dataset with ground truth demonstrate the prediction performance and interpretability of multi-variable LSTM in comparison to a variety of baselines. It exhibits the prospect of multi-variable LSTM as an end-to-end framework for both forecasting and knowledge discovery.
