Secure and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence-Extended Reality (AI-XR) for Metaverses

Adnan Qayyum, Muhammad Atif Butt, Hassan Ali et al.

Metaverse is expected to emerge as a new paradigm for the next-generation Internet, providing fully immersive and personalised experiences to socialize, work, and play in self-sustaining and hyper-spatio-temporal virtual world(s). The advancements in different technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality, extended reality (XR), artificial intelligence (AI), and 5G/6G communication will be the key enablers behind the realization of AI-XR metaverse applications. While AI itself has many potential applications in the aforementioned technologies (e.g., avatar generation, network optimization, etc.), ensuring the security of AI in critical applications like AI-XR metaverse applications is profoundly crucial to avoid undesirable actions that could undermine users' privacy and safety, consequently putting their lives in danger. To this end, we attempt to analyze the security, privacy, and trustworthiness aspects associated with the use of various AI techniques in AI-XR metaverse applications. Specifically, we discuss numerous such challenges and present a taxonomy of potential solutions that could be leveraged to develop secure, private, robust, and trustworthy AI-XR applications. To highlight the real implications of AI-associated adversarial threats, we designed a metaverse-specific case study and analyzed it through the adversarial lens. Finally, we elaborate upon various open issues that require further research interest from the community.

Low-Latency Online Multiplier with Reduced Activities and Minimized Interconnect for Inner Product Arrays

Muhammad Usman, Milos Ercegovac, Jeong-A Lee

Multiplication is indispensable and is one of the core operations in many modern applications including signal processing and neural networks. Conventional right-to-left (RL) multiplier extensively contributes to the power consumption, area utilization and critical path delay in such applications. This paper proposes a low latency multiplier based on online or left-to-right (LR) arithmetic which can increase throughput and reduce latency by digit-level pipelining. Online arithmetic enables overlapping successive operations regardless of data dependency because of the most significant digit first mode of operation. To produce most significant digit first, it uses redundant number system and we can have a carry-free addition, therefore, the delay of the arithmetic operation is independent of operand bit width. The operations are performed digit by digit serially from left to right which allows gradual increase in the slice activities making it suitable for implementation on reconfigurable devices. Serial nature of the online algorithm and gradual increment/decrement of active slices minimize the interconnects and signal activities resulting in overall reduction of area and power consumption. We present online multipliers with; both inputs in serial, and one in serial and one in parallel. Pipelined and non-pipelined designs of the proposed multipliers have been synthesized with GSCL 45nm technology on Synopsys Design Compiler. Thorough comparative analysis has been performed using widely used performance metrics. The results show that the proposed online multipliers outperform the RL multipliers.

Bird Eye-View to Street-View: A Survey

Khawlah Bajbaa, Muhammad Usman, Saeed Anwar et al.

In recent years, street view imagery has grown to become one of the most important sources of geospatial data collection and urban analytics, which facilitates generating meaningful insights and assisting in decision-making. Synthesizing a street-view image from its corresponding satellite image is a challenging task due to the significant differences in appearance and viewpoint between the two domains. In this study, we screened 20 recent research papers to provide a thorough review of the state-of-the-art of how street-view images are synthesized from their corresponding satellite counterparts. The main findings are: (i) novel deep learning techniques are required for synthesizing more realistic and accurate street-view images; (ii) more datasets need to be collected for public usage; and (iii) more specific evaluation metrics need to be investigated for evaluating the generated images appropriately. We conclude that, due to applying outdated deep learning techniques, the recent literature failed to generate detailed and diverse street-view images.

The Diabetic Buddy: A Diet Regulator andTracking System for Diabetics

Muhammad Usman, Kashif Ahmad, Amir Sohail et al.

The prevalence of Diabetes mellitus (DM) in the Middle East is exceptionally high as compared to the rest of the world. In fact, the prevalence of diabetes in the Middle East is 17-20%, which is well above the global average of 8-9%. Research has shown that food intake has strong connections with the blood glucose levels of a patient. In this regard, there is a need to build automatic tools to monitor the blood glucose levels of diabetics and their daily food intake. This paper presents an automatic way of tracking continuous glucose and food intake of diabetics using off-the-shelf sensors and machine learning, respectively. Our system not only helps diabetics to track their daily food intake but also assists doctors to analyze the impact of the food in-take on blood glucose in real-time. For food recognition, we collected a large-scale Middle-Eastern food dataset and proposed a fusion-based framework incorporating several existing pre-trained deep models for Middle-Eastern food recognition.

KaFHCa: Key-establishment via Frequency Hopping Collisions

Muhammad Usman, Simone Raponi, Marwa Qaraqe et al.

The massive deployment of IoT devices being utilized by home automation, industrial and military scenarios demands for high security and privacy standards to be achieved through innovative solutions. This paper proposes KaFHCa, a crypto-less protocol that generates shared secret keys by combining random frequency hopping collisions and source indistinguishability independently of the radio channel status. While other solutions tie the secret bit rate generation to the current radio channel conditions, thus becoming unpractical in static environments, KaFHCa guarantees almost the same secret bitrate independently of the channel conditions. KaFHCa generates shared secrets through random collisions of the transmitter and the receiver in the radio spectrum, and leverages on the fading phenomena to achieve source indistinguishability, thus preventing unauthorized eavesdroppers from inferring the key. The proposed solution is (almost) independent of the adversary position, works under the conservative assumption of channel fading (σ = 8dB), and is capable of generating a secret key of 128 bits with less than 564 transmissions.

3D Object Localization Using 2D Estimates for Computer Vision Applications

Taha Hasan Masood Siddique, Muhammad Usman

A technique for object localization based on pose estimation and camera calibration is presented. The 3-dimensional (3D) coordinates are estimated by collecting multiple 2-dimensional (2D) images of the object and are utilized for the calibration of the camera. The calibration steps involving a number of parameter calculation including intrinsic and extrinsic parameters for the removal of lens distortion, computation of object's size and camera's position calculation are discussed. A transformation strategy to estimate the 3D pose using the 2D images is presented. The proposed method is implemented on MATLAB and validation experiments are carried out for both pose estimation and camera calibration.
