Neural Continuous-Time Markov Chain: Discrete Diffusion via Decoupled Jump Timing and DirectionJingyuan Li, Xiaoyi Jiang, Fukang Wen et al. · microsoft-research
Discrete diffusion models based on continuous-time Markov chains (CTMCs) have shown strong performance on language and discrete data generation, yet existing approaches typically parameterize the reverse rate matrix as a single object -- via concrete scores, clean-data predictions ($x_0$-parameterization), or denoising distributions -- rather than aligning the parameterization with the intrinsic CTMC decomposition into jump timing and jump direction. Since a CTMC is fundamentally a Poisson process fully determined by these two quantities, decomposing along this structure is closer to first principles and naturally leads to our formulation. We propose \textbf{Neural CTMC}, which separately parameterizes the reverse process through an \emph{exit rate} (when to jump) and a \emph{jump distribution} (where to jump) using two dedicated network heads. We show that the evidence lower bound (ELBO) differs from a path-space KL divergence between the true and learned reverse processes by a $θ$-independent constant, so that the training objective is fully governed by the exit rate and jump distribution we parameterize. Moreover, this KL factorizes into a Poisson KL for timing and a categorical KL for direction. We further show that the tractable conditional surrogate preserves the gradients and minimizers of the corresponding marginal reverse-process objective under standard regularity assumptions. Our theoretical framework also covers masked and GIDD-style noise schedules. Empirically, while the uniform forward process has been explored in prior work, our model, to our best of the knowledge, is the first pure-uniform method to outperform mask-based methods on the OpenWebText dataset.To facilitate reproducibility, we release our pretrained weights at https://huggingface.co/Jiangxy1117/Neural-CTMC.

A Two-step Krasnosel'skii-Mann Algorithm with Adaptive Momentum and Its Applications to Image Denoising and Matrix CompletionYongxin He, Jingyuan Li, Yizun Lin et al.
In this paper, we propose a Two-step Krasnosel'skii-Mann (KM) Algorithm (TKMA) with adaptive momentum for solving convex optimization problems arising in image processing. Such optimization problems can often be reformulated as fixed-point problems for certain operators, which are then solved using iterative methods based on the same operator, including the KM iteration, to ultimately obtain the solution to the original optimization problem. Prior to developing TKMA, we first introduce a KM iteration enhanced with adaptive momentum, derived from geometric properties of an $α$-averaged nonexpansive operator T with $α\in(0,1)$, KM acceleration technique, and information from the composite operator $T^2$. The proposed TKMA is constructed as a convex combination of this adaptive-momentum KM iteration and the Picard iteration of $T^2$. We prove that the sequence generated by TKMA converges weakly to a fixed point of T in a real Hilbert space. Moreover, under $α\in(0,1/2]$ and specific assumptions on the adaptive momentum parameters, we prove that the algorithm achieves an $o\left(1/\sqrt{k}\right)$ convergence rate in terms of the distance between successive iterates. Numerical experiments demonstrate that TKMA outperforms the FPPA, PGA, Fast KM algorithm, and Halpern algorithm on tasks such as image denoising and low-rank matrix completion.

GLIMMER: Incorporating Graph and Lexical Features in Unsupervised Multi-Document SummarizationRan Liu, Ming Liu, Min Yu et al.
Pre-trained language models are increasingly being used in multi-document summarization tasks. However, these models need large-scale corpora for pre-training and are domain-dependent. Other non-neural unsupervised summarization approaches mostly rely on key sentence extraction, which can lead to information loss. To address these challenges, we propose a lightweight yet effective unsupervised approach called GLIMMER: a Graph and LexIcal features based unsupervised Multi-docuMEnt summaRization approach. It first constructs a sentence graph from the source documents, then automatically identifies semantic clusters by mining low-level features from raw texts, thereby improving intra-cluster correlation and the fluency of generated sentences. Finally, it summarizes clusters into natural sentences. Experiments conducted on Multi-News, Multi-XScience and DUC-2004 demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing unsupervised approaches. Furthermore, it surpasses state-of-the-art pre-trained multi-document summarization models (e.g. PEGASUS and PRIMERA) under zero-shot settings in terms of ROUGE scores. Additionally, human evaluations indicate that summaries generated by GLIMMER achieve high readability and informativeness scores. Our code is available at https://github.com/Oswald1997/GLIMMER.

Co-designing a Sub-millisecond Latency Event-based Eye Tracking System with Submanifold Sparse CNNBaoheng Zhang, Yizhao Gao, Jingyuan Li et al.
Eye-tracking technology is integral to numerous consumer electronics applications, particularly in the realm of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR). These applications demand solutions that excel in three crucial aspects: low-latency, low-power consumption, and precision. Yet, achieving optimal performance across all these fronts presents a formidable challenge, necessitating a balance between sophisticated algorithms and efficient backend hardware implementations. In this study, we tackle this challenge through a synergistic software/hardware co-design of the system with an event camera. Leveraging the inherent sparsity of event-based input data, we integrate a novel sparse FPGA dataflow accelerator customized for submanifold sparse convolution neural networks (SCNN). The SCNN implemented on the accelerator can efficiently extract the embedding feature vector from each representation of event slices by only processing the non-zero activations. Subsequently, these vectors undergo further processing by a gated recurrent unit (GRU) and a fully connected layer on the host CPU to generate the eye centers. Deployment and evaluation of our system reveal outstanding performance metrics. On the Event-based Eye-Tracking-AIS2024 dataset, our system achieves 81% p5 accuracy, 99.5% p10 accuracy, and 3.71 Mean Euclidean Distance with 0.7 ms latency while only consuming 2.29 mJ per inference. R&D-Agent: An LLM-Agent Framework Towards Autonomous Data ScienceXu Yang, Xiao Yang, Shikai Fang et al.
Recent advances in AI and ML have transformed data science, yet increasing complexity and expertise requirements continue to hinder progress. Although crowd-sourcing platforms alleviate some challenges, high-level machine learning engineering (MLE) tasks remain labor-intensive and iterative. We introduce R&D-Agent, a comprehensive, decoupled, and extensible framework that formalizes the MLE process. R&D-Agent defines the MLE workflow into two phases and six components, turning agent design for MLE from ad-hoc craftsmanship into a principled, testable process. Although several existing agents report promising gains on their chosen components, they can mostly be summarized as a partial optimization from our framework's simple baseline. Inspired by human experts, we designed efficient and effective agents within this framework that achieve state-of-the-art performance. Evaluated on MLE-Bench, the agent built on R&D-Agent ranks as the top-performing machine learning engineering agent, achieving 35.1% any medal rate, demonstrating the ability of the framework to speed up innovation and improve accuracy across a wide range of data science applications. Discovery of Interpretable Physical Laws in Materials via Language-Model-Guided Symbolic RegressionYifeng Guan, Chuyi Liu, Dongzhan Zhou et al.
Discovering interpretable physical laws from high-dimensional data is a fundamental challenge in scientific research. Traditional methods, such as symbolic regression, often produce complex, unphysical formulas when searching a vast space of possible forms. We introduce a framework that guides the search process by leveraging the embedded scientific knowledge of large language models, enabling efficient identification of physical laws in the data. We validate our approach by modeling key properties of perovskite materials. Our method mitigates the combinatorial explosion commonly encountered in traditional symbolic regression, reducing the effective search space by a factor of approximately $10^5$. A set of novel formulas for bulk modulus, band gap, and oxygen evolution reaction activity are identified, which not only provide meaningful physical insights but also outperform previous formulas in accuracy and simplicity.

Reasoning as Gradient: Scaling MLE Agents Beyond Tree SearchYifei Zhang, Xu Yang, Xiao Yang et al.
LLM-based agents for machine learning engineering (MLE) predominantly rely on tree search, a form of gradient-free optimization that uses scalar validation scores to rank candidates. As LLM reasoning capabilities improve, exhaustive enumeration becomes increasingly inefficient compared to directed updates, analogous to how accurate gradients enable efficient descent over random search. We introduce \textsc{Gome}, an MLE agent that operationalizes gradient-based optimization. \textsc{Gome} maps structured diagnostic reasoning to gradient computation, success memory to momentum, and multi-trace execution to distributed optimization. Under a closed-world protocol that isolates architectural effects from external knowledge, \textsc{Gome} achieves a state-of-the-art 35.1\% any-medal rate on MLE-Bench with a restricted 12-hour budget on a single V100 GPU. Scaling experiments across 10 models reveal a critical crossover: with weaker models, tree search retains advantages by compensating for unreliable reasoning through exhaustive exploration; as reasoning capability strengthens, gradient-based optimization progressively outperforms, with the gap widening at frontier-tier models. Given the rapid advancement of reasoning-oriented LLMs, this positions gradient-based optimization as an increasingly favorable paradigm. We release our codebase and GPT-5 traces.

PLANET v2.0: A comprehensive Protein-Ligand Affinity Prediction Model Based on Mixture Density NetworkHaotian Gao, Xiangying Zhang, Jingyuan Li et al.
Drug discovery represents a time-consuming and financially intensive process, and virtual screening can accelerate it. Scoring functions, as one of the tools guiding virtual screening, have their precision closely tied to screening efficiency. In our previous study, we developed a graph neural network model called PLANET (Protein-Ligand Affinity prediction NETwork), but it suffers from the defect in representing protein-ligand contact maps. Incorrect binding modes inevitably lead to poor affinity predictions, so accurate prediction of the protein-ligand contact map is desired to improve PLANET. In this study, we have proposed PLANET v2.0 as an upgraded version. The model is trained via multi-objective training strategy and incorporates the Mixture Density Network to predict binding modes. Except for the probability density distributions of non-covalent interactions, we innovatively employ another Gaussian mixture model to describe the relationship between distance and energy of each interaction pair and predict protein-ligand affinity like calculating the mathematical expectation. As on the CASF-2016 benchmark, PLANET v2.0 demonstrates excellent scoring power, ranking power, and docking power. The screening power of PLANET v2.0 gets notably improved compared to PLANET and Glide SP and it demonstrates robust validation on a commercial ultra-large-scale dataset. Given its efficiency and accuracy, PLANET v2.0 can hopefully become one of the practical tools for virtual screening workflows. Recurrent Feature Reasoning for Image InpaintingJingyuan Li, Ning Wang, Lefei Zhang et al.
Existing inpainting methods have achieved promising performance for recovering regular or small image defects. However, filling in large continuous holes remains difficult due to the lack of constraints for the hole center. In this paper, we devise a Recurrent Feature Reasoning (RFR) network which is mainly constructed by a plug-and-play Recurrent Feature Reasoning module and a Knowledge Consistent Attention (KCA) module. Analogous to how humans solve puzzles (i.e., first solve the easier parts and then use the results as additional information to solve difficult parts), the RFR module recurrently infers the hole boundaries of the convolutional feature maps and then uses them as clues for further inference. The module progressively strengthens the constraints for the hole center and the results become explicit. To capture information from distant places in the feature map for RFR, we further develop KCA and incorporate it in RFR. Empirically, we first compare the proposed RFR-Net with existing backbones, demonstrating that RFR-Net is more efficient (e.g., a 4\% SSIM improvement for the same model size). We then place the network in the context of the current state-of-the-art, where it exhibits improved performance. LabBuilder: Protocol-Grounded 3D Layout Generation for Interactable and Safe LaboratoryJianbao Cao, Zhangrui Zhao, Bohan Feng et al.
Automated laboratories hold the promise of accelerating scientific discovery, yet their deployment is bottlenecked by the difficulty of designing safe and executable environments. While simulator-based design offers scalability, existing 3D scene generation methods are primarily tailored for household settings, optimizing for visual plausibility while neglecting the rigorous functional semantics and safety constraints essential for scientific experimentation. We present LabBuilder, an end-to-end system that generates and verifies 3D laboratory layouts from concise textual specifications. It operates through three tightly coupled components: LabForge first curates a meta-dataset of annotated assets and chemical knowledge, translating natural language specifications into structured protocols; building on these protocols, LabGen synthesizes laboratory layouts via an iterative, constraint-aware optimization strategy; finally, LabTouchstone evaluates the resulting layouts as a unified benchmark. Extensive experiments demonstrate that LabBuilder significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods, producing laboratory environments that are not only realistic but also functionally valid and safe for complex experimental workflows.

With the constraint of a no regret follower, will the players in a two-player Stackelberg game still reach Stackelberg equilibrium? We first show when the follower strategy is either reward-average or transform-reward-average, the two players can always get the Stackelberg Equilibrium. Then, we extend that the players can achieve the Stackelberg equilibrium in the two-player game under the no regret constraint. Also, we show a strict upper bound of the follower's utility difference between with and without no regret constraint. Moreover, in constant-sum two-player Stackelberg games with non-regret action sequences, we ensure the total optimal utility of the game remains also bounded.

Feynman-Kac Operator Expectation EstimatorJingyuan Li, Wei Liu
The Feynman-Kac Operator Expectation Estimator (FKEE) is an innovative method for estimating the target Mathematical Expectation $\mathbb{E}_{X\sim P}[f(X)]$ without relying on a large number of samples, in contrast to the commonly used Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) Expectation Estimator. FKEE comprises diffusion bridge models and approximation of the Feynman-Kac operator. The key idea is to use the solution to the Feynmann-Kac equation at the initial time $u(x_0,0)=\mathbb{E}[f(X_T)|X_0=x_0]$. We use Physically Informed Neural Networks (PINN) to approximate the Feynman-Kac operator, which enables the incorporation of diffusion bridge models into the expectation estimator and significantly improves the efficiency of using data while substantially reducing the variance. Diffusion Bridge Model is a more general MCMC method. In order to incorporate extensive MCMC algorithms, we propose a new diffusion bridge model based on the Minimum Wasserstein distance. This diffusion bridge model is universal and reduces the training time of the PINN. FKEE also reduces the adverse impact of the curse of dimensionality and weakens the assumptions on the distribution of $X$ and performance function $f$ in the general MCMC expectation estimator. The theoretical properties of this universal diffusion bridge model are also shown. Finally, we demonstrate the advantages and potential applications of this method through various concrete experiments, including the challenging task of approximating the partition function in the random graph model such as the Ising model.

This survey reviews the AIS 2024 Event-Based Eye Tracking (EET) Challenge. The task of the challenge focuses on processing eye movement recorded with event cameras and predicting the pupil center of the eye. The challenge emphasizes efficient eye tracking with event cameras to achieve good task accuracy and efficiency trade-off. During the challenge period, 38 participants registered for the Kaggle competition, and 8 teams submitted a challenge factsheet. The novel and diverse methods from the submitted factsheets are reviewed and analyzed in this survey to advance future event-based eye tracking research.

Brain-to-Text Benchmark '24: Lessons LearnedFrancis R. Willett, Jingyuan Li, Trung Le et al.
Speech brain-computer interfaces aim to decipher what a person is trying to say from neural activity alone, restoring communication to people with paralysis who have lost the ability to speak intelligibly. The Brain-to-Text Benchmark '24 and associated competition was created to foster the advancement of decoding algorithms that convert neural activity to text. Here, we summarize the lessons learned from the competition ending on June 1, 2024 (the top 4 entrants also presented their experiences in a recorded webinar). The largest improvements in accuracy were achieved using an ensembling approach, where the output of multiple independent decoders was merged using a fine-tuned large language model (an approach used by all 3 top entrants). Performance gains were also found by improving how the baseline recurrent neural network (RNN) model was trained, including by optimizing learning rate scheduling and by using a diphone training objective. Improving upon the model architecture itself proved more difficult, however, with attempts to use deep state space models or transformers not yet appearing to offer a benefit over the RNN baseline. The benchmark will remain open indefinitely to support further work towards increasing the accuracy of brain-to-text algorithms.

SAVVY: Spatial Awareness via Audio-Visual LLMs through Seeing and HearingMingfei Chen, Zijun Cui, Xiulong Liu et al.
3D spatial reasoning in dynamic, audio-visual environments is a cornerstone of human cognition yet remains largely unexplored by existing Audio-Visual Large Language Models (AV-LLMs) and benchmarks, which predominantly focus on static or 2D scenes. We introduce SAVVY-Bench, the first benchmark for 3D spatial reasoning in dynamic scenes with synchronized spatial audio. SAVVY-Bench is comprised of thousands of relationships involving static and moving objects, and requires fine-grained temporal grounding, consistent 3D localization, and multi-modal annotation. To tackle this challenge, we propose SAVVY, a novel training-free reasoning pipeline that consists of two stages: (i) Egocentric Spatial Tracks Estimation, which leverages AV-LLMs as well as other audio-visual methods to track the trajectories of key objects related to the query using both visual and spatial audio cues, and (ii) Dynamic Global Map Construction, which aggregates multi-modal queried object trajectories and converts them into a unified global dynamic map. Using the constructed map, a final QA answer is obtained through a coordinate transformation that aligns the global map with the queried viewpoint. Empirical evaluation demonstrates that SAVVY substantially enhances performance of state-of-the-art AV-LLMs, setting a new standard and stage for approaching dynamic 3D spatial reasoning in AV-LLMs.

Incentivizing Consistent, Effective and Scalable Reasoning Capability in Audio LLMs via Reasoning Process RewardsJiajun Fan, Roger Ren, Jingyuan Li et al.
The role of reasoning in Audio Large Language Models remains widely underexplored, as introducing a reasoning process often degrades rather than improves performance during inference, a phenomenon we term test-time inverse scaling, where longer reasoning chains yield progressively worse results. We demonstrate that this stems not from fundamental limitations of reasoning itself, but from inadequate training: models without proper guidance for the reasoning process produce hallucinatory, inconsistent reasoning that accumulates errors over longer chains. To address these challenges, we introduce CESAR (Consistent, Effective, and Scalable Audio Reasoners), shifting from outcome verification to rewarding the reasoning process. Our online reinforcement learning framework employs Group Relative Policy Optimization with a multi-faceted reward suite that incentivizes not only correctness and format but also consistency, structured analytical patterns, causal reasoning, domain-knowledge integration, and calibrated reasoning depth. CESAR resolves test-time inverse scaling, transforming reasoning from detriments into gains while revealing model-specific ``reasoning sweet spots", where performance peaks during test-time scaling. We achieve state-of-the-art results on MMAU Test-mini, substantially outperforming Gemini 2.5 Pro and GPT-4o Audio, and near-human-level performance on MMSU reasoning tasks. Through AI-as-judge evaluations and qualitative comparisons, we provide both quantitative and qualitative validation of our improved reasoning quality. Importantly, enhanced reasoning creates synergistic effects, simultaneously improving multimodal reasoning and perception capabilities. Overall, CESAR establishes a principled method for developing robust and scalable reasoning in Audio LLMs.

A cross-species neural foundation model for end-to-end speech decodingYizi Zhang, Linyang He, Chaofei Fan et al.
Speech brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) aim to restore communication for people with paralysis by translating neural activity into text. Most systems use cascaded frameworks that decode phonemes before assembling sentences with an n-gram language model (LM), preventing joint optimization of all stages simultaneously. Here, we introduce an end-to-end Brain-to-Text (BIT) framework that translates neural activity into coherent sentences using a single differentiable neural network. Central to our approach is a cross-task, cross-species pretrained neural encoder, whose representations transfer to both attempted and imagined speech. In a cascaded setting with an n-gram LM, the pretrained encoder establishes a new state-of-the-art (SOTA) on the Brain-to-Text '24 and '25 benchmarks. Integrated end-to-end with audio large language models (LLMs) and trained with contrastive learning for cross-modal alignment, BIT reduces the word error rate (WER) of the prior end-to-end method from 24.69% to 10.22%. Notably, we find that small-scale audio LLMs markedly improve end-to-end decoding. Beyond record-setting performance, BIT aligns attempted and imagined speech embeddings to enable cross-task generalization. Altogether, our approach advances the integration of large, diverse neural datasets, paving the way for an end-to-end decoding framework that supports seamless, differentiable optimization.

SPINT: Spatial Permutation-Invariant Neural Transformer for Consistent Intracortical Motor DecodingTrung Le, Hao Fang, Jingyuan Li et al.
Intracortical Brain-Computer Interfaces (iBCI) aim to decode behavior from neural population activity, enabling individuals with motor impairments to regain motor functions and communication abilities. A key challenge in long-term iBCI is the nonstationarity of neural recordings, where the composition and tuning profiles of the recorded populations are unstable across recording sessions. Existing methods attempt to address this issue by explicit alignment techniques; however, they rely on fixed neural identities and require test-time labels or parameter updates, limiting their generalization across sessions and imposing additional computational burden during deployment. In this work, we introduce SPINT - a Spatial Permutation-Invariant Neural Transformer framework for behavioral decoding that operates directly on unordered sets of neural units. Central to our approach is a novel context-dependent positional embedding scheme that dynamically infers unit-specific identities, enabling flexible generalization across recording sessions. SPINT supports inference on variable-size populations and allows few-shot, gradient-free adaptation using a small amount of unlabeled data from the test session. To further promote model robustness to population variability, we introduce dynamic channel dropout, a regularization method for iBCI that simulates shifts in population composition during training. We evaluate SPINT on three multi-session datasets from the FALCON Benchmark, covering continuous motor decoding tasks in human and non-human primates. SPINT demonstrates robust cross-session generalization, outperforming existing zero-shot and few-shot unsupervised baselines while eliminating the need for test-time alignment and fine-tuning. Our work contributes an initial step toward a robust and scalable neural decoding framework for long-term iBCI applications.

EgoBrain: Synergizing Minds and Eyes For Human Action UnderstandingNie Lin, Yansen Wang, Dongqi Han et al. · cmu, tsinghua
The integration of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), in particular electroencephalography (EEG), with artificial intelligence (AI) has shown tremendous promise in decoding human cognition and behavior from neural signals. In particular, the rise of multimodal AI models have brought new possibilities that have never been imagined before. Here, we present EgoBrain --the world's first large-scale, temporally aligned multimodal dataset that synchronizes egocentric vision and EEG of human brain over extended periods of time, establishing a new paradigm for human-centered behavior analysis. This dataset comprises 61 hours of synchronized 32-channel EEG recordings and first-person video from 40 participants engaged in 29 categories of daily activities. We then developed a muiltimodal learning framework to fuse EEG and vision for action understanding, validated across both cross-subject and cross-environment challenges, achieving an action recognition accuracy of 66.70%. EgoBrain paves the way for a unified framework for brain-computer interface with multiple modalities. All data, tools, and acquisition protocols are openly shared to foster open science in cognitive computing.

Can Optical Denoising Clean Sonar Images? A Benchmark and Fusion ApproachZiyu Wang, Tao Xue, Jingyuan Li et al.
Object detection in sonar images is crucial for underwater robotics applications including autonomous navigation and resource exploration. However, complex noise patterns inherent in sonar imagery, particularly speckle, reverberation, and non-Gaussian noise, significantly degrade detection accuracy. While denoising techniques have achieved remarkable success in optical imaging, their applicability to sonar data remains underexplored. This study presents the first systematic evaluation of nine state-of-the-art deep denoising models with distinct architectures, including Neighbor2Neighbor with varying noise parameters, Blind2Unblind with different noise configurations, and DSPNet, for sonar image preprocessing. We establish a rigorous benchmark using five publicly available sonar datasets and assess their impact on four representative detection algorithms: YOLOX, Faster R-CNN, SSD300, and SSDMobileNetV2. Our evaluation addresses three unresolved questions: first, how effectively optical denoising architectures transfer to sonar data; second, which model families perform best against sonar noise; and third, whether denoising truly improves detection accuracy in practical pipelines. Extensive experiments demonstrate that while denoising generally improves detection performance, effectiveness varies across methods due to their inherent biases toward specific noise types. To leverage complementary denoising effects, we propose a mutually-supervised multi-source denoising fusion framework where outputs from different denoisers mutually supervise each other at the pixel level, creating a synergistic framework that produces cleaner images.

Identifying the interaction targets of bioactive compounds is a foundational element for deciphering their pharmacological effects. Target prediction algorithms equip researchers with an effective tool to rapidly scope and explore potential targets. Here, we introduce the COMET, a multi-technological modular target prediction tool that provides comprehensive predictive insights, including similar active compounds, three-dimensional predicted binding modes, and probability scores, all within an average processing time of less than 10 minutes per task. With meticulously curated data, the COMET database encompasses 990,944 drug-target interaction pairs and 45,035 binding pockets, enabling predictions for 2,685 targets, which span confirmed and exploratory therapeutic targets for human diseases. In comparative testing using datasets from ChEMBL and BindingDB, COMET outperformed five other well-known algorithms, offering nearly an 80% probability of accurately identifying at least one true target within the top 15 predictions for a given compound. Sparse Semi-Supervised Action Recognition with Active LearningJingyuan Li, Eli Shlizerman
Current state-of-the-art methods for skeleton-based action recognition are supervised and rely on labels. The reliance is limiting the performance due to the challenges involved in annotation and mislabeled data. Unsupervised methods have been introduced, however, they organize sequences into clusters and still require labels to associate clusters with actions. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for skeleton-based action recognition, called SESAR, that connects these approaches. SESAR leverages the information from both unlabeled data and a handful of sequences actively selected for labeling, combining unsupervised training with sparsely supervised guidance. SESAR is composed of two main components, where the first component learns a latent representation for unlabeled action sequences through an Encoder-Decoder RNN which reconstructs the sequences, and the second component performs active learning to select sequences to be labeled based on cluster and classification uncertainty. When the two components are simultaneously trained on skeleton-based action sequences, they correspond to a robust system for action recognition with only a handful of labeled samples. We evaluate our system on common datasets with multiple sequences and actions, such as NW UCLA, NTU RGB+D 60, and UWA3D. Our results outperform standalone skeleton-based supervised, unsupervised with cluster identification, and active-learning methods for action recognition when applied to sparse labeled samples, as low as 1% of the data.

Iterate & Cluster: Iterative Semi-Supervised Action RecognitionJingyuan Li, Eli Shlizerman
We propose a novel system for active semi-supervised feature-based action recognition. Given time sequences of features tracked during movements our system clusters the sequences into actions. Our system is based on encoder-decoder unsupervised methods shown to perform clustering by self-organization of their latent representation through the auto-regression task. These methods were tested on human action recognition benchmarks and outperformed non-feature based unsupervised methods and achieved comparable accuracy to skeleton-based supervised methods. However, such methods rely on K-Nearest Neighbours (KNN) associating sequences to actions, and general features with no annotated data would correspond to approximate clusters which could be further enhanced. Our system proposes an iterative semi-supervised method to address this challenge and to actively learn the association of clusters and actions. The method utilizes latent space embedding and clustering of the unsupervised encoder-decoder to guide the selection of sequences to be annotated in each iteration. Each iteration, the selection aims to enhance action recognition accuracy while choosing a small number of sequences for annotation. We test the approach on human skeleton-based action recognition benchmarks assuming that only annotations chosen by our method are available and on mouse movements videos recorded in lab experiments. We show that our system can boost recognition performance with only a small percentage of annotations. The system can be used as an interactive annotation tool to guide labeling efforts for 'in the wild' videos of various objects and actions to reach robust recognition.

A Syntactically Constrained Bidirectional-Asynchronous Approach for Emotional Conversation GenerationJingyuan Li, Xiao Sun
Traditional neural language models tend to generate generic replies with poor logic and no emotion. In this paper, a syntactically constrained bidirectional-asynchronous approach for emotional conversation generation (E-SCBA) is proposed to address this issue. In our model, pre-generated emotion keywords and topic keywords are asynchronously introduced into the process of decoding. It is much different from most existing methods which generate replies from the first word to the last. Through experiments, the results indicate that our approach not only improves the diversity of replies, but gains a boost on both logic and emotion compared with baselines.
