BoRe-Depth: Self-supervised Monocular Depth Estimation with Boundary Refinement for Embedded SystemsChang Liu, Juan Li, Sheng Zhang et al.
Depth estimation is one of the key technologies for realizing 3D perception in unmanned systems. Monocular depth estimation has been widely researched because of its low-cost advantage, but the existing methods face the challenges of poor depth estimation performance and blurred object boundaries on embedded systems. In this paper, we propose a novel monocular depth estimation model, BoRe-Depth, which contains only 8.7M parameters. It can accurately estimate depth maps on embedded systems and significantly improves boundary quality. Firstly, we design an Enhanced Feature Adaptive Fusion Module (EFAF) which adaptively fuses depth features to enhance boundary detail representation. Secondly, we integrate semantic knowledge into the encoder to improve the object recognition and boundary perception capabilities. Finally, BoRe-Depth is deployed on NVIDIA Jetson Orin, and runs efficiently at 50.7 FPS. We demonstrate that the proposed model significantly outperforms previous lightweight models on multiple challenging datasets, and we provide detailed ablation studies for the proposed methods. Align Deep Features for Oriented Object DetectionJiaming Han, Jian Ding, Jie Li et al.
The past decade has witnessed significant progress on detecting objects in aerial images that are often distributed with large scale variations and arbitrary orientations. However most of existing methods rely on heuristically defined anchors with different scales, angles and aspect ratios and usually suffer from severe misalignment between anchor boxes and axis-aligned convolutional features, which leads to the common inconsistency between the classification score and localization accuracy. To address this issue, we propose a Single-shot Alignment Network (S$^2$A-Net) consisting of two modules: a Feature Alignment Module (FAM) and an Oriented Detection Module (ODM). The FAM can generate high-quality anchors with an Anchor Refinement Network and adaptively align the convolutional features according to the anchor boxes with a novel Alignment Convolution. The ODM first adopts active rotating filters to encode the orientation information and then produces orientation-sensitive and orientation-invariant features to alleviate the inconsistency between classification score and localization accuracy. Besides, we further explore the approach to detect objects in large-size images, which leads to a better trade-off between speed and accuracy. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method can achieve state-of-the-art performance on two commonly used aerial objects datasets (i.e., DOTA and HRSC2016) while keeping high efficiency. Anisotropic Convolutional Networks for 3D Semantic Scene CompletionJie Li, Kai Han, Peng Wang et al.
As a voxel-wise labeling task, semantic scene completion (SSC) tries to simultaneously infer the occupancy and semantic labels for a scene from a single depth and/or RGB image. The key challenge for SSC is how to effectively take advantage of the 3D context to model various objects or stuffs with severe variations in shapes, layouts and visibility. To handle such variations, we propose a novel module called anisotropic convolution, which properties with flexibility and power impossible for the competing methods such as standard 3D convolution and some of its variations. In contrast to the standard 3D convolution that is limited to a fixed 3D receptive field, our module is capable of modeling the dimensional anisotropy voxel-wisely. The basic idea is to enable anisotropic 3D receptive field by decomposing a 3D convolution into three consecutive 1D convolutions, and the kernel size for each such 1D convolution is adaptively determined on the fly. By stacking multiple such anisotropic convolution modules, the voxel-wise modeling capability can be further enhanced while maintaining a controllable amount of model parameters. Extensive experiments on two SSC benchmarks, NYU-Depth-v2 and NYUCAD, show the superior performance of the proposed method. Our code is available at https://waterljwant.github.io/SSC/

Domain Generalized Stereo Matching with Uncertainty-guided Data AugmentationShuangli Du, Jing Wang, Minghua Zhao et al.
State-of-the-art stereo matching (SM) models trained on synthetic data often fail to generalize to real data domains due to domain differences, such as color, illumination, contrast, and texture. To address this challenge, we leverage data augmentation to expand the training domain, encouraging the model to acquire robust cross-domain feature representations instead of domain-dependent shortcuts. This paper proposes an uncertainty-guided data augmentation (UgDA) method, which argues that the image statistics in RGB space (mean and standard deviation) carry the domain characteristics. Thus, samples in unseen domains can be generated by properly perturbing these statistics. Furthermore, to simulate more potential domains, Gaussian distributions founded on batch-level statistics are poposed to model the unceratinty of perturbation direction and intensity. Additionally, we further enforce feature consistency between original and augmented data for the same scene, encouraging the model to learn structure aware, shortcuts-invariant feature representations. Our approach is simple, architecture-agnostic, and can be integrated into any SM networks. Extensive experiments on several challenging benchmarks have demonstrated that our method can significantly improve the generalization performance of existing SM networks.

Real-time Keypoints Detection for Autonomous Recovery of the Unmanned Ground VehicleJie Li, Sheng Zhang, Kai Han et al.
The combination of a small unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) and a large unmanned carrier vehicle allows more flexibility in real applications such as rescue in dangerous scenarios. The autonomous recovery system, which is used to guide the small UGV back to the carrier vehicle, is an essential component to achieve a seamless combination of the two vehicles. This paper proposes a novel autonomous recovery framework with a low-cost monocular vision system to provide accurate positioning and attitude estimation of the UGV during navigation. First, we introduce a light-weight convolutional neural network called UGV-KPNet to detect the keypoints of the small UGV from the images captured by a monocular camera. UGV-KPNet is computationally efficient with a small number of parameters and provides pixel-level accurate keypoints detection results in real-time. Then, six degrees of freedom pose is estimated using the detected keypoints to obtain positioning and attitude information of the UGV. Besides, we are the first to create a large-scale real-world keypoints dataset of the UGV. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of both accuracy and speed on UGV keypoint detection, and can further boost the 6-DoF pose estimation for the UGV.

Generative and Discriminative Learning for Distorted Image RestorationYi Gu, Yuting Gao, Jie Li et al.
Liquify is a common technique for image editing, which can be used for image distortion. Due to the uncertainty in the distortion variation, restoring distorted images caused by liquify filter is a challenging task. To edit images in an efficient way, distorted images are expected to be restored automatically. This paper aims at the distorted image restoration, which is characterized by seeking the appropriate warping and completion of a distorted image. Existing methods focus on the hardware assistance or the geometric principle to solve the specific regular deformation caused by natural phenomena, but they cannot handle the irregularity and uncertainty of artificial distortion in this task. To address this issue, we propose a novel generative and discriminative learning method based on deep neural networks, which can learn various reconstruction mappings and represent complex and high-dimensional data. This method decomposes the task into a rectification stage and a refinement stage. The first stage generative network predicts the mapping from the distorted images to the rectified ones. The second stage generative network then further optimizes the perceptual quality. Since there is no available dataset or benchmark to explore this task, we create a Distorted Face Dataset (DFD) by forward distortion mapping based on CelebA dataset. Extensive experimental evaluation on the proposed benchmark and the application demonstrates that our method is an effective way for distorted image restoration.

RGBD Based Dimensional Decomposition Residual Network for 3D Semantic Scene CompletionJie Li, Yu Liu, Dong Gong et al.
RGB images differentiate from depth images as they carry more details about the color and texture information, which can be utilized as a vital complementary to depth for boosting the performance of 3D semantic scene completion (SSC). SSC is composed of 3D shape completion (SC) and semantic scene labeling while most of the existing methods use depth as the sole input which causes the performance bottleneck. Moreover, the state-of-the-art methods employ 3D CNNs which have cumbersome networks and tremendous parameters. We introduce a light-weight Dimensional Decomposition Residual network (DDR) for 3D dense prediction tasks. The novel factorized convolution layer is effective for reducing the network parameters, and the proposed multi-scale fusion mechanism for depth and color image can improve the completion and segmentation accuracy simultaneously. Our method demonstrates excellent performance on two public datasets. Compared with the latest method SSCNet, we achieve 5.9% gains in SC-IoU and 5.7% gains in SSC-IOU, albeit with only 21% network parameters and 16.6% FLOPs employed compared with that of SSCNet.

Channel-wise and Spatial Feature Modulation Network for Single Image Super-ResolutionYanting Hu, Jie Li, Yuanfei Huang et al.
The performance of single image super-resolution has achieved significant improvement by utilizing deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The features in deep CNN contain different types of information which make different contributions to image reconstruction. However, most CNN-based models lack discriminative ability for different types of information and deal with them equally, which results in the representational capacity of the models being limited. On the other hand, as the depth of neural networks grows, the long-term information coming from preceding layers is easy to be weaken or lost in late layers, which is adverse to super-resolving image. To capture more informative features and maintain long-term information for image super-resolution, we propose a channel-wise and spatial feature modulation (CSFM) network in which a sequence of feature-modulation memory (FMM) modules is cascaded with a densely connected structure to transform low-resolution features to high informative features. In each FMM module, we construct a set of channel-wise and spatial attention residual (CSAR) blocks and stack them in a chain structure to dynamically modulate multi-level features in a global-and-local manner. This feature modulation strategy enables the high contribution information to be enhanced and the redundant information to be suppressed. Meanwhile, for long-term information persistence, a gated fusion (GF) node is attached at the end of the FMM module to adaptively fuse hierarchical features and distill more effective information via the dense skip connections and the gating mechanism. Extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations on benchmark datasets illustrate the superiority of our proposed method over the state-of-the-art methods.

Bottom-up Pose Estimation of Multiple Person with Bounding Box ConstraintMiaopeng Li, Zimeng Zhou, Jie Li et al.
In this work, we propose a new method for multi-person pose estimation which combines the traditional bottom-up and the top-down methods. Specifically, we perform the network feed-forwarding in a bottom-up manner, and then parse the poses with bounding box constraints in a top-down manner. In contrast to the previous top-down methods, our method is robust to bounding box shift and tightness. We extract features from an original image by a residual network and train the network to learn both the confidence maps of joints and the connection relationships between joints. During testing, the predicted confidence maps, the connection relationships and the bounding boxes are used to parse the poses of all persons. The experimental results showed that our method learns more accurate human poses especially in challenging situations and gains better time performance, compared with the bottom-up and the top-down methods.
