Comprehensive Generative Replay for Task-Incremental Segmentation with Concurrent Appearance and Semantic Forgetting

Wei Li, Jingyang Zhang, Pheng-Ann Heng et al.

Generalist segmentation models are increasingly favored for diverse tasks involving various objects from different image sources. Task-Incremental Learning (TIL) offers a privacy-preserving training paradigm using tasks arriving sequentially, instead of gathering them due to strict data sharing policies. However, the task evolution can span a wide scope that involves shifts in both image appearance and segmentation semantics with intricate correlation, causing concurrent appearance and semantic forgetting. To solve this issue, we propose a Comprehensive Generative Replay (CGR) framework that restores appearance and semantic knowledge by synthesizing image-mask pairs to mimic past task data, which focuses on two aspects: modeling image-mask correspondence and promoting scalability for diverse tasks. Specifically, we introduce a novel Bayesian Joint Diffusion (BJD) model for high-quality synthesis of image-mask pairs with their correspondence explicitly preserved by conditional denoising. Furthermore, we develop a Task-Oriented Adapter (TOA) that recalibrates prompt embeddings to modulate the diffusion model, making the data synthesis compatible with different tasks. Experiments on incremental tasks (cardiac, fundus and prostate segmentation) show its clear advantage for alleviating concurrent appearance and semantic forgetting. Code is available at https://github.com/jingyzhang/CGR.

High-Resolution Network for Photorealistic Style Transfer

Ming Li, Chunyang Ye, Wei Li

Photorealistic style transfer aims to transfer the style of one image to another, but preserves the original structure and detail outline of the content image, which makes the content image still look like a real shot after the style transfer. Although some realistic image styling methods have been proposed, these methods are vulnerable to lose the details of the content image and produce some irregular distortion structures. In this paper, we use a high-resolution network as the image generation network. Compared to other methods, which reduce the resolution and then restore the high resolution, our generation network maintains high resolution throughout the process. By connecting high-resolution subnets to low-resolution subnets in parallel and repeatedly multi-scale fusion, high-resolution subnets can continuously receive information from low-resolution subnets. This allows our network to discard less information contained in the image, so the generated images may have a more elaborate structure and less distortion, which is crucial to the visual quality. We conducted extensive experiments and compared the results with existing methods. The experimental results show that our model is effective and produces better results than existing methods for photorealistic image stylization. Our source code with PyTorch framework will be publicly available at https://github.com/limingcv/Photorealistic-Style-Transfer

LUAI Challenge 2021 on Learning to Understand Aerial Images

Gui-Song Xia, Jian Ding, Ming Qian et al.

This report summarizes the results of Learning to Understand Aerial Images (LUAI) 2021 challenge held on ICCV 2021, which focuses on object detection and semantic segmentation in aerial images. Using DOTA-v2.0 and GID-15 datasets, this challenge proposes three tasks for oriented object detection, horizontal object detection, and semantic segmentation of common categories in aerial images. This challenge received a total of 146 registrations on the three tasks. Through the challenge, we hope to draw attention from a wide range of communities and call for more efforts on the problems of learning to understand aerial images.

Query-Variant Advertisement Text Generation with Association Knowledge

Siyu Duan, Wei Li, Cai Jing et al.

Online advertising is an important revenue source for many IT companies. In the search advertising scenario, advertisement text that meets the need of the search query would be more attractive to the user. However, the manual creation of query-variant advertisement texts for massive items is expensive. Traditional text generation methods tend to focus on the general searching needs with high frequency while ignoring the diverse personalized searching needs with low frequency. In this paper, we propose the query-variant advertisement text generation task that aims to generate candidate advertisement texts for different web search queries with various needs based on queries and item keywords. To solve the problem of ignoring low-frequency needs, we propose a dynamic association mechanism to expand the receptive field based on external knowledge, which can obtain associated words to be added to the input. These associated words can serve as bridges to transfer the ability of the model from the familiar high-frequency words to the unfamiliar low-frequency words. With association, the model can make use of various personalized needs in queries and generate query-variant advertisement texts. Both automatic and human evaluations show that our model can generate more attractive advertisement text than baselines.
