Physics Guided Deep Learning for Generative Design of Crystal Materials with Symmetry ConstraintsYong Zhao, Edirisuriya M. Dilanga Siriwardane, Zhenyao Wu et al.
Discovering new materials is a challenging task in materials science crucial to the progress of human society. Conventional approaches based on experiments and simulations are labor-intensive or costly with success heavily depending on experts' heuristic knowledge. Here, we propose a deep learning based Physics Guided Crystal Generative Model (PGCGM) for efficient crystal material design with high structural diversity and symmetry. Our model increases the generation validity by more than 700\% compared to FTCP, one of the latest structure generators and by more than 45\% compared to our previous CubicGAN model. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations are used to validate the generated structures with 1,869 materials out of 2,000 are successfully optimized and deposited into the Carolina Materials Database \url{www.carolinamatdb.org}, of which 39.6\% have negative formation energy and 5.3\% have energy-above-hull less than 0.25 eV/atom, indicating their thermodynamic stability and potential synthesizability.

Improving Transformer-based Networks With Locality For Automatic Speaker VerificationMufan Sang, Yong Zhao, Gang Liu et al.
Recently, Transformer-based architectures have been explored for speaker embedding extraction. Although the Transformer employs the self-attention mechanism to efficiently model the global interaction between token embeddings, it is inadequate for capturing short-range local context, which is essential for the accurate extraction of speaker information. In this study, we enhance the Transformer with the enhanced locality modeling in two directions. First, we propose the Locality-Enhanced Conformer (LE-Confomer) by introducing depth-wise convolution and channel-wise attention into the Conformer blocks. Second, we present the Speaker Swin Transformer (SST) by adapting the Swin Transformer, originally proposed for vision tasks, into speaker embedding network. We evaluate the proposed approaches on the VoxCeleb datasets and a large-scale Microsoft internal multilingual (MS-internal) dataset. The proposed models achieve 0.75% EER on VoxCeleb 1 test set, outperforming the previously proposed Transformer-based models and CNN-based models, such as ResNet34 and ECAPA-TDNN. When trained on the MS-internal dataset, the proposed models achieve promising results with 14.6% relative reduction in EER over the Res2Net50 model.

Learnable Blur Kernel for Single-Image Defocus Deblurring in the WildJucai Zhai, Pengcheng Zeng, Chihao Ma et al.
Recent research showed that the dual-pixel sensor has made great progress in defocus map estimation and image defocus deblurring. However, extracting real-time dual-pixel views is troublesome and complex in algorithm deployment. Moreover, the deblurred image generated by the defocus deblurring network lacks high-frequency details, which is unsatisfactory in human perception. To overcome this issue, we propose a novel defocus deblurring method that uses the guidance of the defocus map to implement image deblurring. The proposed method consists of a learnable blur kernel to estimate the defocus map, which is an unsupervised method, and a single-image defocus deblurring generative adversarial network (DefocusGAN) for the first time. The proposed network can learn the deblurring of different regions and recover realistic details. We propose a defocus adversarial loss to guide this training process. Competitive experimental results confirm that with a learnable blur kernel, the generated defocus map can achieve results comparable to supervised methods. In the single-image defocus deblurring task, the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art results, especially significant improvements in perceptual quality, where PSNR reaches 25.56 dB and LPIPS reaches 0.111.

ONNXExplainer: an ONNX Based Generic Framework to Explain Neural Networks Using Shapley ValuesYong Zhao, Runxin He, Nicholas Kersting et al.
Understanding why a neural network model makes certain decisions can be as important as the inference performance. Various methods have been proposed to help practitioners explain the prediction of a neural network model, of which Shapley values are most popular. SHAP package is a leading implementation of Shapley values to explain neural networks implemented in TensorFlow or PyTorch but lacks cross-platform support, one-shot deployment and is highly inefficient. To address these problems, we present the ONNXExplainer, which is a generic framework to explain neural networks using Shapley values in the ONNX ecosystem. In ONNXExplainer, we develop its own automatic differentiation and optimization approach, which not only enables One-Shot Deployment of neural networks inference and explanations, but also significantly improves the efficiency to compute explanation with less memory consumption. For fair comparison purposes, we also implement the same optimization in TensorFlow and PyTorch and measure its performance against the current state of the art open-source counterpart, SHAP. Extensive benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed optimization approach improves the explanation latency of VGG19, ResNet50, DenseNet201, and EfficientNetB0 by as much as 500%.

CityEQA: A Hierarchical LLM Agent on Embodied Question Answering Benchmark in City SpaceYong Zhao, Kai Xu, Zhengqiu Zhu et al.
Embodied Question Answering (EQA) has primarily focused on indoor environments, leaving the complexities of urban settings-spanning environment, action, and perception-largely unexplored. To bridge this gap, we introduce CityEQA, a new task where an embodied agent answers open-vocabulary questions through active exploration in dynamic city spaces. To support this task, we present CityEQA-EC, the first benchmark dataset featuring 1,412 human-annotated tasks across six categories, grounded in a realistic 3D urban simulator. Moreover, we propose Planner-Manager-Actor (PMA), a novel agent tailored for CityEQA. PMA enables long-horizon planning and hierarchical task execution: the Planner breaks down the question answering into sub-tasks, the Manager maintains an object-centric cognitive map for spatial reasoning during the process control, and the specialized Actors handle navigation, exploration, and collection sub-tasks. Experiments demonstrate that PMA achieves 60.7% of human-level answering accuracy, significantly outperforming competitive baselines. While promising, the performance gap compared to humans highlights the need for enhanced visual reasoning in CityEQA. This work paves the way for future advancements in urban spatial intelligence. A 99-Line Homogenization Code for Lattice-skin Plate StructuresZhongkai Ji, Dawei Li, Yong Zhao et al.
Recent years have seen growing application potential for Lattice-skin Plate Structures in advanced manufacturing fields such as aerospace and automotive engineering. For multiscale performance evaluation of such structures, conventional homogenization methods for lattice-filled volume structures are often used for equivalent analysis. However, in finite-thickness Lattice-skin Plate Structures, periodic boundary conditions imposed along the three orthogonal directions of the representative cell cannot adequately capture the boundary effect of the free surfaces in the thickness direction, which introduces bias into the prediction of effective properties. To reduce this bias, this study develops and open-sources a homogenization method for Lattice-skin Plate Structures, forming an open-source computational framework for this class of structures. Representative numerical examples show that the framework can stably extract effective plate/shell stiffness matrices and can be extended to predict multiphase material properties and analyze steady-state heat conduction. The tool provides an open and reusable analysis foundation for the high-fidelity design of multifunctional lightweight structures.

Aligning Large Language Models for Faithful Integrity Against Opposing ArgumentYong Zhao, Yang Deng, See-Kiong Ng et al.
Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive capabilities in complex reasoning tasks. However, they can be easily misled by unfaithful arguments during conversations, even when their original statements are correct. To this end, we investigate the problem of maintaining faithful integrity in LLMs. This involves ensuring that LLMs adhere to their faithful statements in the face of opposing arguments and are able to correct their incorrect statements when presented with faithful arguments. In this work, we propose a novel framework, named Alignment for Faithful Integrity with Confidence Estimation (AFICE), which aims to align the LLM responses with faithful integrity. Specifically, AFICE first designs a Bilateral Confidence Estimation (BCE) approach for estimating the uncertainty of each response generated by the LLM given a specific context, which simultaneously estimate the model's confidence to the question based on the internal states during decoding as well as to the answer based on cumulative probability ratios. With the BCE, we construct a conversational preference dataset composed of context, original statement, and argument, which is adopted for aligning the LLM for faithful integrity using Direct Preference Optimization (DPO). Extensive experimental results on a wide range of benchmarks demonstrate significant improvements in the LLM's ability to maintain faithful responses when encountering opposing arguments, ensuring both the practical utility and trustworthiness of LLMs in complex interactive settings. Motif Channel Opened in a White-Box: Stereo Matching via Motif Correlation GraphZiyang Chen, Yongjun Zhang, Wenting Li et al.
Real-world applications of stereo matching, such as autonomous driving, place stringent demands on both safety and accuracy. However, learning-based stereo matching methods inherently suffer from the loss of geometric structures in certain feature channels, creating a bottleneck in achieving precise detail matching. Additionally, these methods lack interpretability due to the black-box nature of deep learning. In this paper, we propose MoCha-V2, a novel learning-based paradigm for stereo matching. MoCha-V2 introduces the Motif Correlation Graph (MCG) to capture recurring textures, which are referred to as ``motifs" within feature channels. These motifs reconstruct geometric structures and are learned in a more interpretable way. Subsequently, we integrate features from multiple frequency domains through wavelet inverse transformation. The resulting motif features are utilized to restore geometric structures in the stereo matching process. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of MoCha-V2. Hadamard Attention Recurrent Transformer: A Strong Baseline for Stereo Matching TransformerZiyang Chen, Wenting Li, Yongjun Zhang et al.
Constrained by the low-rank bottleneck inherent in attention mechanisms, current stereo matching transformers suffer from limited nonlinear expressivity, which renders their feature representations sensitive to challenging conditions such as reflections. To overcome this difficulty, we present the Hadamard Attention Recurrent Stereo Transformer (HART). HART includes a novel attention mechanism that incorporates the following components: 1) The Dense Attention Kernel (DAK) maps the attention weight distribution into a high-dimensional space over (0, +$\infty$). By removing the upper bound constraint on attention weights, DAK enables more flexible modeling of complex feature interactions. This reduces feature collinearity. 2) The Multi Kernel & Order Interaction (MKOI) module extends the attention mechanism by unifying semantic and spatial knowledge learning. This integration improves the ability of HART to learn features in binocular images. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our HART. In reflective area, HART ranked 1st on the KITTI 2012 benchmark among all published methods at the time of submission. Code is available at https://github.com/ZYangChen/HART.

SLAM technology has recently seen many successes and attracted the attention of high-technological companies. However, how to unify the interface of existing or emerging algorithms, and effectively perform benchmark about the speed, robustness and portability are still problems. In this paper, we propose a novel SLAM platform named GSLAM, which not only provides evaluation functionality, but also supplies useful toolkit for researchers to quickly develop their own SLAM systems. The core contribution of GSLAM is an universal, cross-platform and full open-source SLAM interface for both research and commercial usage, which is aimed to handle interactions with input dataset, SLAM implementation, visualization and applications in an unified framework. Through this platform, users can implement their own functions for better performance with plugin form and further boost the application to practical usage of the SLAM.

SAM2Grasp: Resolve Multi-modal Grasping via Prompt-conditioned Temporal Action PredictionShengkai Wu, Jinrong Yang, Wenqiu Luo et al.
Imitation learning for robotic grasping is often plagued by the multimodal problem: when a scene contains multiple valid targets, demonstrations of grasping different objects create conflicting training signals. Standard imitation learning policies fail by averaging these distinct actions into a single, invalid action. In this paper, we introduce SAM2Grasp, a novel framework that resolves this issue by reformulating the task as a uni-modal, prompt-conditioned prediction problem. Our method leverages the frozen SAM2 model to use its powerful visual temporal tracking capability and introduces a lightweight, trainable action head that operates in parallel with its native segmentation head. This design allows for training only the small action head on pre-computed temporal-visual features from SAM2. During inference, an initial prompt, such as a bounding box provided by an upstream object detection model, designates the specific object to be grasped. This prompt conditions the action head to predict a unique, unambiguous grasp trajectory for that object alone. In all subsequent video frames, SAM2's built-in temporal tracking capability automatically maintains stable tracking of the selected object, enabling our model to continuously predict the grasp trajectory from the video stream without further external guidance. This temporal-prompted approach effectively eliminates ambiguity from the visuomotor policy. We demonstrate through extensive experiments that SAM2Grasp achieves state-of-the-art performance in cluttered, multi-object grasping tasks.

Robust Loss Functions for Object Grasping under Limited Ground TruthYangfan Deng, Mengyao Zhang, Yong Zhao
Object grasping is a crucial technology enabling robots to perceive and interact with the environment sufficiently. However, in practical applications, researchers are faced with missing or noisy ground truth while training the convolutional neural network, which decreases the accuracy of the model. Therefore, different loss functions are proposed to deal with these problems to improve the accuracy of the neural network. For missing ground truth, a new predicted category probability method is defined for unlabeled samples, which works effectively in conjunction with the pseudo-labeling method. Furthermore, for noisy ground truth, a symmetric loss function is introduced to resist the corruption of label noises. The proposed loss functions are powerful, robust, and easy to use. Experimental results based on the typical grasping neural network show that our method can improve performance by 2 to 13 percent.

Don't Just Say "I don't know"! Self-aligning Large Language Models for Responding to Unknown Questions with ExplanationsYang Deng, Yong Zhao, Moxin Li et al.
Despite the remarkable abilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) to answer questions, they often display a considerable level of overconfidence even when the question does not have a definitive answer. To avoid providing hallucinated answers to these unknown questions, existing studies typically investigate approaches to refusing to answer these questions. In this work, we propose a novel and scalable self-alignment method to utilize the LLM itself to enhance its response-ability to different types of unknown questions, being capable of not only refusing to answer but also providing explanation to the unanswerability of unknown questions. Specifically, the Self-Align method first employ a two-stage class-aware self-augmentation approach to generate a large amount of unknown question-response data. Then we conduct disparity-driven self-curation to select qualified data for fine-tuning the LLM itself for aligning the responses to unknown questions as desired. Experimental results on two datasets across four types of unknown questions validate the superiority of the Self-Align method over existing baselines in terms of three types of task formulation.

Knowledge Boundary of Large Language Models: A SurveyMoxin Li, Yong Zhao, Wenxuan Zhang et al.
Although large language models (LLMs) store vast amount of knowledge in their parameters, they still have limitations in the memorization and utilization of certain knowledge, leading to undesired behaviors such as generating untruthful and inaccurate responses. This highlights the critical need to understand the knowledge boundary of LLMs, a concept that remains inadequately defined in existing research. In this survey, we propose a comprehensive definition of the LLM knowledge boundary and introduce a formalized taxonomy categorizing knowledge into four distinct types. Using this foundation, we systematically review the field through three key lenses: the motivation for studying LLM knowledge boundaries, methods for identifying these boundaries, and strategies for mitigating the challenges they present. Finally, we discuss open challenges and potential research directions in this area. We aim for this survey to offer the community a comprehensive overview, facilitate access to key issues, and inspire further advancements in LLM knowledge research.

A2DEPT: Large Language Model-Driven Automated Algorithm Design via Evolutionary Program TreesBin Chen, Shouliang Zhu, Beidan Liu et al.
Designing heuristics for combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) is a fundamental yet challenging task that traditionally requires extensive domain expertise. Recently, Large Language Model (LLM)-based Automated Heuristic Design (AHD) has shown promise in autonomously generating heuristic components with minimal human intervention. However, most existing LLM-based AHD methods enforce fixed algorithmic templates to ensure executability, which confines the search to component-level tuning and limits system-level algorithmic expressiveness. To enable open-ended solver synthesis beyond rigid templates, we propose Automated Algorithm Design via Evolutionary Program Trees (A2DEPT), which treats LLMs as system-level algorithm architects. A2DEPT explores the vast program space via a tree-structured evolutionary search with hybrid selection and hierarchical operators, enabling iterative refinement of complete algorithms. To make open-ended generation practical, we enforce executability with a lightweight program-maintenance loop that performs feedback-driven repair. In experiments, A2DEPT consistently outperforms representative LLM-based baselines on both standard and highly constrained benchmarks. On the standard benchmarks, it reduces the mean normalized optimality gap by 9.8% relative to the strongest competing AHD baseline.

A Survey on Agent Workflow -- Status and FutureChaojia Yu, Zihan Cheng, Hanwen Cui et al.
In the age of large language models (LLMs), autonomous agents have emerged as a powerful paradigm for achieving general intelligence. These agents dynamically leverage tools, memory, and reasoning capabilities to accomplish user-defined goals. As agent systems grow in complexity, agent workflows-structured orchestration frameworks-have become central to enabling scalable, controllable, and secure AI behaviors. This survey provides a comprehensive review of agent workflow systems, spanning academic frameworks and industrial implementations. We classify existing systems along two key dimensions: functional capabilities (e.g., planning, multi-agent collaboration, external API integration) and architectural features (e.g., agent roles, orchestration flows, specification languages). By comparing over 20 representative systems, we highlight common patterns, potential technical challenges, and emerging trends. We further address concerns related to workflow optimization strategies and security. Finally, we outline open problems such as standardization and multimodal integration, offering insights for future research at the intersection of agent design, workflow infrastructure, and safe automation.

HAWK: A Hierarchical Workflow Framework for Multi-Agent CollaborationYuyang Cheng, Yumiao Xu, Chaojia Yu et al.
Contemporary multi-agent systems encounter persistent challenges in cross-platform interoperability, dynamic task scheduling, and efficient resource sharing. Agents with heterogeneous implementations often lack standardized interfaces; collaboration frameworks remain brittle and hard to extend; scheduling policies are static; and inter-agent state synchronization is insufficient. We propose Hierarchical Agent Workflow (HAWK), a modular framework comprising five layers-User, Workflow, Operator, Agent, and Resource-and supported by sixteen standardized interfaces. HAWK delivers an end-to-end pipeline covering task parsing, workflow orchestration, intelligent scheduling, resource invocation, and data synchronization. At its core lies an adaptive scheduling and optimization module in the Workflow Layer, which harnesses real-time feedback and dynamic strategy adjustment to maximize utilization. The Resource Layer provides a unified abstraction over heterogeneous data sources, large models, physical devices, and third-party services&tools, simplifying cross-domain information retrieval. We demonstrate HAWK's scalability and effectiveness via CreAgentive, a multi-agent novel-generation prototype, which achieves marked gains in throughput, lowers invocation complexity, and improves system controllability. We also show how hybrid deployments of large language models integrate seamlessly within HAWK, highlighting its flexibility. Finally, we outline future research avenues-hallucination mitigation, real-time performance tuning, and enhanced cross-domain adaptability-and survey prospective applications in healthcare, government, finance, and education.

Variational Multi-Modal Hypergraph Attention Network for Multi-Modal Relation ExtractionQian Li, Cheng Ji, Shu Guo et al.
Multi-modal relation extraction (MMRE) is a challenging task that aims to identify relations between entities in text leveraging image information. Existing methods are limited by their neglect of the multiple entity pairs in one sentence sharing very similar contextual information (ie, the same text and image), resulting in increased difficulty in the MMRE task. To address this limitation, we propose the Variational Multi-Modal Hypergraph Attention Network (VM-HAN) for multi-modal relation extraction. Specifically, we first construct a multi-modal hypergraph for each sentence with the corresponding image, to establish different high-order intra-/inter-modal correlations for different entity pairs in each sentence. We further design the Variational Hypergraph Attention Networks (V-HAN) to obtain representational diversity among different entity pairs using Gaussian distribution and learn a better hypergraph structure via variational attention. VM-HAN achieves state-of-the-art performance on the multi-modal relation extraction task, outperforming existing methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

As artificial intelligence advances toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), the need for robust and human-like memory systems has become increasingly evident. Current memory architectures often suffer from limited adaptability, insufficient multimodal integration, and an inability to support continuous learning. To address these limitations, we propose a scenario-driven methodology that extracts essential functional requirements from representative cognitive scenarios, leading to a unified set of design principles for next-generation AI memory systems. Based on this approach, we introduce the \textbf{COgnitive Layered Memory Architecture (COLMA)}, a novel framework that integrates cognitive scenarios, memory processes, and storage mechanisms into a cohesive design. COLMA provides a structured foundation for developing AI systems capable of lifelong learning and human-like reasoning, thereby contributing to the pragmatic development of AGI.

Probing the Critical Point (CritPt) of AI Reasoning: a Frontier Physics Research BenchmarkMinhui Zhu, Minyang Tian, Xiaocheng Yang et al.
While large language models (LLMs) with reasoning capabilities are progressing rapidly on high-school math competitions and coding, can they reason effectively through complex, open-ended challenges found in frontier physics research? And crucially, what kinds of reasoning tasks do physicists want LLMs to assist with? To address these questions, we present the CritPt (Complex Research using Integrated Thinking - Physics Test, pronounced "critical point"), the first benchmark designed to test LLMs on unpublished, research-level reasoning tasks that broadly covers modern physics research areas, including condensed matter, quantum physics, atomic, molecular & optical physics, astrophysics, high energy physics, mathematical physics, statistical physics, nuclear physics, nonlinear dynamics, fluid dynamics and biophysics. CritPt consists of 71 composite research challenges designed to simulate full-scale research projects at the entry level, which are also decomposed to 190 simpler checkpoint tasks for more fine-grained insights. All problems are newly created by 50+ active physics researchers based on their own research. Every problem is hand-curated to admit a guess-resistant and machine-verifiable answer and is evaluated by an automated grading pipeline heavily customized for advanced physics-specific output formats. We find that while current state-of-the-art LLMs show early promise on isolated checkpoints, they remain far from being able to reliably solve full research-scale challenges: the best average accuracy among base models is only 5.7%, achieved by GPT-5 (high), moderately rising to around 10% when equipped with coding tools. Through the realistic yet standardized evaluation offered by CritPt, we highlight a large disconnect between current model capabilities and realistic physics research demands, offering a foundation to guide the development of scientifically grounded AI tools.

Automatic Classification and Segmentation of Tunnel Cracks Based on Deep Learning and Visual ExplanationsYong Feng, Xiaolei Zhang, Shijin Feng et al.
Tunnel lining crack is a crucial indicator of tunnels' safety status. Aiming to classify and segment tunnel cracks with enhanced accuracy and efficiency, this study proposes a two-step deep learning-based method. An automatic tunnel image classification model is developed using the DenseNet-169 in the first step. The proposed crack segmentation model in the second step is based on the DeepLabV3+, whose internal logic is evaluated via a score-weighted visual explanation technique. Proposed method combines tunnel image classification and segmentation together, so that the selected images containing cracks from the first step are segmented in the second step to improve the detection accuracy and efficiency. The superior performances of the two-step method are validated by experiments. The results show that the accuracy and frames per second (FPS) of the tunnel crack classification model are 92.23% and 39.80, respectively, which are higher than other convolutional neural networks (CNN) based and Transformer based models. Also, the intersection over union (IoU) and F1 score of the tunnel crack segmentation model are 57.01% and 67.44%, respectively, outperforming other state-of-the-art models. Moreover, the provided visual explanations in this study are conducive to understanding the "black box" of deep learning-based models. The developed two-stage deep learning-based method integrating visual explanations provides a basis for fast and accurate quantitative assessment of tunnel health status.

Towards Autonomous UAV Visual Object Search in City Space: Benchmark and Agentic MethodologyYatai Ji, Zhengqiu Zhu, Yong Zhao et al.
Aerial Visual Object Search (AVOS) tasks in urban environments require Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to autonomously search for and identify target objects using visual and textual cues without external guidance. Existing approaches struggle in complex urban environments due to redundant semantic processing, similar object distinction, and the exploration-exploitation dilemma. To bridge this gap and support the AVOS task, we introduce CityAVOS, the first benchmark dataset for autonomous search of common urban objects. This dataset comprises 2,420 tasks across six object categories with varying difficulty levels, enabling comprehensive evaluation of UAV agents' search capabilities. To solve the AVOS tasks, we also propose PRPSearcher (Perception-Reasoning-Planning Searcher), a novel agentic method powered by multi-modal large language models (MLLMs) that mimics human three-tier cognition. Specifically, PRPSearcher constructs three specialized maps: an object-centric dynamic semantic map enhancing spatial perception, a 3D cognitive map based on semantic attraction values for target reasoning, and a 3D uncertainty map for balanced exploration-exploitation search. Also, our approach incorporates a denoising mechanism to mitigate interference from similar objects and utilizes an Inspiration Promote Thought (IPT) prompting mechanism for adaptive action planning. Experimental results on CityAVOS demonstrate that PRPSearcher surpasses existing baselines in both success rate and search efficiency (on average: +37.69% SR, +28.96% SPL, -30.69% MSS, and -46.40% NE). While promising, the performance gap compared to humans highlights the need for better semantic reasoning and spatial exploration capabilities in AVOS tasks. 10K is Enough: An Ultra-Lightweight Binarized Network for Infrared Small-Target DetectionBiqiao Xin, Qianchen Mao, Bingshu Wang et al.
The widespread deployment of Infrared Small-Target Detection (IRSTD) algorithms on edge devices necessitates the exploration of model compression techniques. Binarized neural networks (BNNs) are distinguished by their exceptional efficiency in model compression. However, the small size of infrared targets introduces stringent precision requirements for the IRSTD task, while the inherent precision loss during binarization presents a significant challenge. To address this, we propose the Binarized Infrared Small-Target Detection Network (BiisNet), which preserves the core operations of binarized convolutions while integrating full-precision features into the network's information flow. Specifically, we propose the Dot Binary Convolution, which retains fine-grained semantic information in feature maps while still leveraging the binarized convolution operations. In addition, we introduce a smooth and adaptive Dynamic Softsign function, which provides more comprehensive and progressively finer gradient during backpropagation, enhancing model stability and promoting an optimal weight distribution. Experimental results demonstrate that BiisNet not only significantly outperforms other binary architectures but also has strong competitiveness among state-of-the-art full-precision models.

A Data-driven Crowd Simulation Framework Integrating Physics-informed Machine Learning with Navigation Potential FieldsRunkang Guo, Bin Chen, Qi Zhang et al.
Traditional rule-based physical models are limited by their reliance on singular physical formulas and parameters, making it difficult to effectively tackle the intricate tasks associated with crowd simulation. Recent research has introduced deep learning methods to tackle these issues, but most current approaches focus primarily on generating pedestrian trajectories, often lacking interpretability and failing to provide real-time dynamic simulations.To address the aforementioned issues, we propose a novel data-driven crowd simulation framework that integrates Physics-informed Machine Learning (PIML) with navigation potential fields. Our approach leverages the strengths of both physical models and PIML. Specifically, we design an innovative Physics-informed Spatio-temporal Graph Convolutional Network (PI-STGCN) as a data-driven module to predict pedestrian movement trends based on crowd spatio-temporal data. Additionally, we construct a physical model of navigation potential fields based on flow field theory to guide pedestrian movements, thereby reinforcing physical constraints during the simulation. In our framework, navigation potential fields are dynamically computed and updated based on the movement trends predicted by the PI-STGCN, while the updated crowd dynamics, guided by these fields, subsequently feed back into the PI-STGCN. Comparative experiments on two publicly available large-scale real-world datasets across five scenes demonstrate that our proposed framework outperforms existing rule-based methods in accuracy and fidelity. The similarity between simulated and actual pedestrian trajectories increases by 10.8%, while the average error is reduced by 4%. Moreover, our framework exhibits greater adaptability and better interpretability compared to methods that rely solely on deep learning for trajectory generation.

Heterogeneous Graph Reinforcement Learning for Dependency-aware Multi-task Allocation in Spatial CrowdsourcingYong Zhao, Zhengqiu Zhu, Chen Gao et al.
Spatial Crowdsourcing (SC) is gaining traction in both academia and industry, with tasks on SC platforms becoming increasingly complex and requiring collaboration among workers with diverse skills. Recent research works address complex tasks by dividing them into subtasks with dependencies and assigning them to suitable workers. However, the dependencies among subtasks and their heterogeneous skill requirements, as well as the need for efficient utilization of workers' limited work time in the multi-task allocation mode, pose challenges in achieving an optimal task allocation scheme. Therefore, this paper formally investigates the problem of Dependency-aware Multi-task Allocation (DMA) and presents a well-designed framework to solve it, known as Heterogeneous Graph Reinforcement Learning-based Task Allocation (HGRL-TA). To address the challenges associated with representing and embedding diverse problem instances to ensure robust generalization, we propose a multi-relation graph model and a Compound-path-based Heterogeneous Graph Attention Network (CHANet) for effectively representing and capturing intricate relations among tasks and workers, as well as providing embedding of problem state. The task allocation decision is determined sequentially by a policy network, which undergoes simultaneous training with CHANet using the proximal policy optimization algorithm. Extensive experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness and generality of the proposed HGRL-TA in solving the DMA problem, leading to average profits that is 21.78% higher than those achieved using the metaheuristic methods.

DevPiolt: Operation Recommendation for IoT Devices at Xiaomi HomeYuxiang Wang, Siwen Wang, Haowei Han et al.
Operation recommendation for IoT devices refers to generating personalized device operations for users based on their context, such as historical operations, environment information, and device status. This task is crucial for enhancing user satisfaction and corporate profits. Existing recommendation models struggle with complex operation logic, diverse user preferences, and sensitive to suboptimal suggestions, limiting their applicability to IoT device operations. To address these issues, we propose DevPiolt, a LLM-based recommendation model for IoT device operations. Specifically, we first equip the LLM with fundamental domain knowledge of IoT operations via continual pre-training and multi-task fine-tuning. Then, we employ direct preference optimization to align the fine-tuned LLM with specific user preferences. Finally, we design a confidence-based exposure control mechanism to avoid negative user experiences from low-quality recommendations. Extensive experiments show that DevPiolt significantly outperforms baselines on all datasets, with an average improvement of 69.5% across all metrics. DevPiolt has been practically deployed in Xiaomi Home app for one quarter, providing daily operation recommendations to 255,000 users. Online experiment results indicate a 21.6% increase in unique visitor device coverage and a 29.1% increase in page view acceptance rates.

ARPGNet: Appearance- and Relation-aware Parallel Graph Attention Fusion Network for Facial Expression RecognitionYan Li, Yong Zhao, Xiaohan Xia et al.
The key to facial expression recognition is to learn discriminative spatial-temporal representations that embed facial expression dynamics. Previous studies predominantly rely on pre-trained Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to learn facial appearance representations, overlooking the relationships between facial regions. To address this issue, this paper presents an Appearance- and Relation-aware Parallel Graph attention fusion Network (ARPGNet) to learn mutually enhanced spatial-temporal representations of appearance and relation information. Specifically, we construct a facial region relation graph and leverage the graph attention mechanism to model the relationships between facial regions. The resulting relational representation sequences, along with CNN-based appearance representation sequences, are then fed into a parallel graph attention fusion module for mutual interaction and enhancement. This module simultaneously explores the complementarity between different representation sequences and the temporal dynamics within each sequence. Experimental results on three facial expression recognition datasets demonstrate that the proposed ARPGNet outperforms or is comparable to state-of-the-art methods.

CreAgentive: An Agent Workflow Driven Multi-Category Creative Generation EngineYuyang Cheng, Linyue Cai, Changwei Peng et al.
We present CreAgentive, an agent workflow driven multi-category creative generation engine that addresses four key limitations of contemporary large language models in writing stories, drama and other categories of creatives: restricted genre diversity, insufficient output length, weak narrative coherence, and inability to enforce complex structural constructs. At its core, CreAgentive employs a Story Prototype, which is a genre-agnostic, knowledge graph-based narrative representation that decouples story logic from stylistic realization by encoding characters, events, and environments as semantic triples. CreAgentive engages a three-stage agent workflow that comprises: an Initialization Stage that constructs a user-specified narrative skeleton; a Generation Stage in which long- and short-term objectives guide multi-agent dialogues to instantiate the Story Prototype; a Writing Stage that leverages this prototype to produce multi-genre text with advanced structures such as retrospection and foreshadowing. This architecture reduces storage redundancy and overcomes the typical bottlenecks of long-form generation. In extensive experiments, CreAgentive generates thousands of chapters with stable quality and low cost (less than $1 per 100 chapters) using a general-purpose backbone model. To evaluate performance, we define a two-dimensional framework with 10 narrative indicators measuring both quality and length. Results show that CreAgentive consistently outperforms strong baselines and achieves robust performance across diverse genres, approaching the quality of human-authored novels.

WEE-Therapy: A Mixture of Weak Encoders Framework for Psychological Counseling Dialogue AnalysisYongqi Kang, Yong Zhao

Existing audio language models (AudioLLMs) often rely on single speech encoders pre-trained on general data, struggling to capture domain-specific features like complex emotions and professional techniques. To address this, we propose WEE-Therapy, a multi-task AudioLLM incorporating a Weak Encoder Ensemble (WEE) mechanism. This supplements a powerful base encoder with a pool of lightweight, specialized encoders. A novel dual-routing strategy combines stable, data-independent domain knowledge with dynamic, data-dependent expert selection. Evaluated on emotion recognition, technique classification, risk detection, and summarization, WEE-Therapy achieves significant performance gains across all tasks with minimal parameter overhead, demonstrating strong potential for AI-assisted clinical analysis.

From "What to Eat?" to Perfect Recipe: ChefMind's Chain-of-Exploration for Ambiguous User Intent in Recipe RecommendationYu Fu, Linyue Cai, Ruoyu Wu et al.
Personalized recipe recommendation faces challenges in handling fuzzy user intent, ensuring semantic accuracy, and providing sufficient detail coverage. We propose ChefMind, a hybrid architecture combining Chain of Exploration (CoE), Knowledge Graph (KG), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and a Large Language Model (LLM). CoE refines ambiguous queries into structured conditions, KG offers semantic reasoning and interpretability, RAG supplements contextual culinary details, and LLM integrates outputs into coherent recommendations. We evaluate ChefMind on the Xiachufang dataset and manually annotated queries, comparing it with LLM-only, KG-only, and RAG-only baselines. Results show that ChefMind achieves superior performance in accuracy, relevance, completeness, and clarity, with an average score of 8.7 versus 6.4-6.7 for ablation models. Moreover, it reduces unprocessed queries to 1.6%, demonstrating robustness in handling fuzzy demands.

Learn to Relax with Large Language Models: Solving Nonlinear Combinatorial Optimization Problems via Bidirectional CoevolutionBeidan Liu, Zhengqiu Zhu, Chen Gao et al.
Nonlinear Combinatorial Optimization Problems (NCOPs) present a formidable computational hurdle in practice, as their nonconvex nature gives rise to multi-modal solution spaces that defy efficient optimization. Traditional constraint relaxation approaches rely heavily on expert-driven, iterative design processes that lack systematic automation and scalable adaptability. While recent Large Language Model (LLM)-based optimization methods show promise for autonomous problem-solving, they predominantly function as passive constraint validators rather than proactive strategy architects, failing to handle the sophisticated constraint interactions inherent to NCOPs.To address these limitations, we introduce the first end-to-end \textbf{Auto}mated \textbf{C}onstraint \textbf{O}ptimization (AutoCO) method, which revolutionizes NCOPs resolution through learning to relax with LLMs.Specifically, we leverage structured LLM reasoning to generate constraint relaxation strategies, which are dynamically evolving with algorithmic principles and executable code through a unified triple-representation scheme. We further establish a novel bidirectional (global-local) coevolution mechanism that synergistically integrates Evolutionary Algorithms for intensive local refinement with Monte Carlo Tree Search for systematic global strategy space exploration, ensuring optimal balance between intensification and diversification in fragmented solution spaces. Finally, comprehensive experiments on three challenging NCOP benchmarks validate AutoCO's consistent effectiveness and superior performance over the baselines.

Bootstrapping Imitation Learning for Long-horizon Manipulation via Hierarchical Data Collection SpaceJinrong Yang, Kexun Chen, Zhuoling Li et al.
Imitation learning (IL) with human demonstrations is a promising method for robotic manipulation tasks. While minimal demonstrations enable robotic action execution, achieving high success rates and generalization requires high cost, e.g., continuously adding data or incrementally conducting human-in-loop processes with complex hardware/software systems. In this paper, we rethink the state/action space of the data collection pipeline as well as the underlying factors responsible for the prediction of non-robust actions. To this end, we introduce a Hierarchical Data Collection Space (HD-Space) for robotic imitation learning, a simple data collection scheme, endowing the model to train with proactive and high-quality data. Specifically, We segment the fine manipulation task into multiple key atomic tasks from a high-level perspective and design atomic state/action spaces for human demonstrations, aiming to generate robust IL data. We conduct empirical evaluations across two simulated and five real-world long-horizon manipulation tasks and demonstrate that IL policy training with HD-Space-based data can achieve significantly enhanced policy performance. HD-Space allows the use of a small amount of demonstration data to train a more powerful policy, particularly for long-horizon manipulation tasks. A Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Approach for Cooperative Air-Ground-Human Crowdsensing in Emergency RescueWenhao Lu, Zhengqiu Zhu, Yong Zhao et al.
Mobile crowdsensing is evolving beyond traditional human-centric models by integrating heterogeneous entities like unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). Optimizing task allocation among these diverse agents is critical, particularly in challenging emergency rescue scenarios characterized by complex environments, limited communication, and partial observability. This paper tackles the Heterogeneous-Entity Collaborative-Sensing Task Allocation (HECTA) problem specifically for emergency rescue, considering humans, UAVs, and UGVs. We introduce a novel ``Hard-Cooperative'' policy where UGVs prioritize recharging low-battery UAVs, alongside performing their sensing tasks. The primary objective is maximizing the task completion rate (TCR) under strict time constraints. We rigorously formulate this NP-hard problem as a decentralized partially observable Markov decision process (Dec-POMDP) to effectively handle sequential decision-making under uncertainty. To solve this, we propose HECTA4ER, a novel multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithm built upon a Centralized Training with Decentralized Execution architecture. HECTA4ER incorporates tailored designs, including specialized modules for complex feature extraction, utilization of action-observation history via hidden states, and a mixing network integrating global and local information, specifically addressing the challenges of partial observability. Furthermore, theoretical analysis confirms the algorithm's convergence properties. Extensive simulations demonstrate that HECTA4ER significantly outperforms baseline algorithms, achieving an average 18.42% increase in TCR. Crucially, a real-world case study validates the algorithm's effectiveness and robustness in dynamic sensing scenarios, highlighting its strong potential for practical application in emergency response.

AutoS$^2$earch: Unlocking the Reasoning Potential of Large Models for Web-based Source SearchZhengqiu Zhu, Yatai Ji, Jiaheng Huang et al.
Web-based management systems have been widely used in risk control and industrial safety. However, effectively integrating source search capabilities into these systems, to enable decision-makers to locate and address the hazard (e.g., gas leak detection) remains a challenge. While prior efforts have explored using web crowdsourcing and AI algorithms for source search decision support, these approaches suffer from overheads in recruiting human participants and slow response times in time-sensitive situations. To address this, we introduce AutoS$^2$earch, a novel framework leveraging large models for zero-shot source search in web applications. AutoS$^2$earch operates on a simplified visual environment projected through a web-based display, utilizing a chain-of-thought prompt designed to emulate human reasoning. The multi-modal large language model (MLLMs) dynamically converts visual observations into language descriptions, enabling the LLM to perform linguistic reasoning on four directional choices. Extensive experiments demonstrate that AutoS$^2$earch achieves performance nearly equivalent to human-AI collaborative source search while eliminating dependency on crowdsourced labor. Our work offers valuable insights in using web engineering to design such autonomous systems in other industrial applications.

Streaming Speaker Change Detection and Gender Classification for Transducer-Based Multi-Talker Speech TranslationPeidong Wang, Naoyuki Kanda, Jian Xue et al.
Streaming multi-talker speech translation is a task that involves not only generating accurate and fluent translations with low latency but also recognizing when a speaker change occurs and what the speaker's gender is. Speaker change information can be used to create audio prompts for a zero-shot text-to-speech system, and gender can help to select speaker profiles in a conventional text-to-speech model. We propose to tackle streaming speaker change detection and gender classification by incorporating speaker embeddings into a transducer-based streaming end-to-end speech translation model. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed methods can achieve high accuracy for both speaker change detection and gender classification.

RE-POSE: Synergizing Reinforcement Learning-Based Partitioning and Offloading for Edge Object DetectionJianrui Shi, Yong Zhao, Zeyang Cui et al.
Object detection plays a crucial role in smart video analysis, with applications ranging from autonomous driving and security to smart cities. However, achieving real-time object detection on edge devices presents significant challenges due to their limited computational resources and the high demands of deep neural network (DNN)-based detection models, particularly when processing high-resolution video. Conventional strategies, such as input down-sampling and network up-scaling, often compromise detection accuracy for faster performance or lead to higher inference latency. To address these issues, this paper introduces RE-POSE, a Reinforcement Learning (RL)-Driven Partitioning and Edge Offloading framework designed to optimize the accuracy-latency trade-off in resource-constrained edge environments. Our approach features an RL-Based Dynamic Clustering Algorithm (RL-DCA) that partitions video frames into non-uniform blocks based on object distribution and the computational characteristics of DNNs. Furthermore, a parallel edge offloading scheme is implemented to distribute these blocks across multiple edge servers for concurrent processing. Experimental evaluations show that RE-POSE significantly enhances detection accuracy and reduces inference latency, surpassing existing methods.

Conversational Crowdsensing: A Parallel Intelligence Powered Novel Sensing ApproachZhengqiu Zhu, Yong Zhao, Bin Chen et al.
The transition from CPS-based Industry 4.0 to CPSS-based Industry 5.0 brings new requirements and opportunities to current sensing approaches, especially in light of recent progress in Chatbots and Large Language Models (LLMs). Therefore, the advancement of parallel intelligence-powered Crowdsensing Intelligence (CSI) is witnessed, which is currently advancing towards linguistic intelligence. In this paper, we propose a novel sensing paradigm, namely conversational crowdsensing, for Industry 5.0. It can alleviate workload and professional requirements of individuals and promote the organization and operation of diverse workforce, thereby facilitating faster response and wider popularization of crowdsensing systems. Specifically, we design the architecture of conversational crowdsensing to effectively organize three types of participants (biological, robotic, and digital) from diverse communities. Through three levels of effective conversation (i.e., inter-human, human-AI, and inter-AI), complex interactions and service functionalities of different workers can be achieved to accomplish various tasks across three sensing phases (i.e., requesting, scheduling, and executing). Moreover, we explore the foundational technologies for realizing conversational crowdsensing, encompassing LLM-based multi-agent systems, scenarios engineering and conversational human-AI cooperation. Finally, we present potential industrial applications of conversational crowdsensing and discuss its implications. We envision that conversations in natural language will become the primary communication channel during crowdsensing process, enabling richer information exchange and cooperative problem-solving among humans, robots, and AI.

Semi-supervised teacher-student deep neural network for materials discoveryDaniel Gleaves, Edirisuriya M. Dilanga Siriwardane, Yong Zhao et al.
Data driven generative machine learning models have recently emerged as one of the most promising approaches for new materials discovery. While the generator models can generate millions of candidates, it is critical to train fast and accurate machine learning models to filter out stable, synthesizable materials with desired properties. However, such efforts to build supervised regression or classification screening models have been severely hindered by the lack of unstable or unsynthesizable samples, which usually are not collected and deposited in materials databases such as ICSD and Materials Project (MP). At the same time, there are a significant amount of unlabelled data available in these databases. Here we propose a semi-supervised deep neural network (TSDNN) model for high-performance formation energy and synthesizability prediction, which is achieved via its unique teacher-student dual network architecture and its effective exploitation of the large amount of unlabeled data. For formation energy based stability screening, our semi-supervised classifier achieves an absolute 10.3\% accuracy improvement compared to the baseline CGCNN regression model. For synthesizability prediction, our model significantly increases the baseline PU learning's true positive rate from 87.9\% to 97.9\% using 1/49 model parameters. To further prove the effectiveness of our models, we combined our TSDNN-energy and TSDNN-synthesizability models with our CubicGAN generator to discover novel stable cubic structures. Out of 1000 recommended candidate samples by our models, 512 of them have negative formation energies as validated by our DFT formation energy calculations. Our experimental results show that our semi-supervised deep neural networks can significantly improve the screening accuracy in large-scale generative materials design.

Deep learning based generative models such as deepfake have been able to generate amazing images and videos. However, these models may need significant transformation when applied to generate crystal materials structures in which the building blocks, the physical atoms are very different from the pixels. Naively transferred generative models tend to generate a large portion of physically infeasible crystal structures that are not stable or synthesizable. Herein we show that by exploiting and adding physically oriented data augmentation, loss function terms, and post processing, our deep adversarial network (GAN) based generative models can now generate crystal structures with higher physical feasibility and expand our previous models which can only create cubic structures.

MaterialsAtlas.org: A Materials Informatics Web App Platform for Materials Discovery and Survey of State-of-the-ArtJianjun Hu, Stanislav Stefanov, Yuqi Song et al.
The availability and easy access of large scale experimental and computational materials data have enabled the emergence of accelerated development of algorithms and models for materials property prediction, structure prediction, and generative design of materials. However, lack of user-friendly materials informatics web servers has severely constrained the wide adoption of such tools in the daily practice of materials screening, tinkering, and design space exploration by materials scientists. Herein we first survey current materials informatics web apps and then propose and develop MaterialsAtlas.org, a web based materials informatics toolbox for materials discovery, which includes a variety of routinely needed tools for exploratory materials discovery, including materials composition and structure check (e.g. for neutrality, electronegativity balance, dynamic stability, Pauling rules), materials property prediction (e.g. band gap, elastic moduli, hardness, thermal conductivity), and search for hypothetical materials. These user-friendly tools can be freely accessed at \url{www.materialsatlas.org}. We argue that such materials informatics apps should be widely developed by the community to speed up the materials discovery processes.

Distributed adaptive algorithm based on the asymmetric cost of error functionsSihai Guan, Qing Cheng, Yong Zhao
In this paper, a family of novel diffusion adaptive estimation algorithm is proposed from the asymmetric cost function perspective by combining diffusion strategy and the linear-linear cost (LLC), quadratic-quadratic cost (QQC), and linear-exponential cost (LEC), at all distributed network nodes, and named diffusion LLCLMS (DLLCLMS), diffusion QQCLMS (DQQCLMS), and diffusion LECLMS (DLECLMS), respectively. Then the stability of mean estimation error and computational complexity of those three diffusion algorithms are analyzed theoretically. Finally, several experiment simulation results are designed to verify the superiority of those three proposed diffusion algorithms. Experimental simulation results show that DLLCLMS, DQQCLMS, and DLECLMS algorithms are more robust to the input signal and impulsive noise than the DSELMS, DRVSSLMS, and DLLAD algorithms. In brief, theoretical analysis and experiment results show that those proposed DLLCLMS, DQQCLMS, and DLECLMS algorithms have superior performance when estimating the unknown linear system under the changeable impulsive noise environments and different types of input signals.

Active learning has been increasingly applied to screening functional materials from existing materials databases with desired properties. However, the number of known materials deposited in the popular materials databases such as ICSD and Materials Project is extremely limited and consists of just a tiny portion of the vast chemical design space. Herein we present an active generative inverse design method that combines active learning with a deep variational autoencoder neural network and a generative adversarial deep neural network model to discover new materials with a target property in the whole chemical design space. The application of this method has allowed us to discover new thermodynamically stable materials with high band gap (SrYF$_5$) and semiconductors with specified band gap ranges (SrClF$_3$, CaClF$_5$, YCl$_3$, SrC$_2$F$_3$, AlSCl, As$_2$O$_3$), all of which are verified by the first principle DFT calculations. Our experiments show that while active learning itself may sample chemically infeasible candidates, these samples help to train effective screening models for filtering out materials with desired properties from the hypothetical materials created by the generative model. The experiments show the effectiveness of our active generative inverse design approach.

Computational discovery of new 2D materials using deep learning generative modelsYuqi Song, Edirisuriya M. Dilanga Siriwardane, Yong Zhao et al.
Two dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as promising functional materials with many applications such as semiconductors and photovoltaics because of their unique optoelectronic properties. While several thousand 2D materials have been screened in existing materials databases, discovering new 2D materials remains to be challenging. Herein we propose a deep learning generative model for composition generation combined with random forest based 2D materials classifier to discover new hypothetical 2D materials. Furthermore, a template based element substitution structure prediction approach is developed to predict the crystal structures of a subset of the newly predicted hypothetical formulas, which allows us to confirm their structure stability using DFT calculations. So far, we have discovered 267,489 new potential 2D materials compositions and confirmed twelve 2D/layered materials by DFT formation energy calculation. Our results show that generative machine learning models provide an effective way to explore the vast chemical design space for new 2D materials discovery.

Microsoft Speaker Diarization System for the VoxCeleb Speaker Recognition Challenge 2020Xiong Xiao, Naoyuki Kanda, Zhuo Chen et al.
This paper describes the Microsoft speaker diarization system for monaural multi-talker recordings in the wild, evaluated at the diarization track of the VoxCeleb Speaker Recognition Challenge(VoxSRC) 2020. We will first explain our system design to address issues in handling real multi-talker recordings. We then present the details of the components, which include Res2Net-based speaker embedding extractor, conformer-based continuous speech separation with leakage filtering, and a modified DOVER (short for Diarization Output Voting Error Reduction) method for system fusion. We evaluate the systems with the data set provided by VoxSRCchallenge 2020, which contains real-life multi-talker audio collected from YouTube. Our best system achieves 3.71% and 6.23% of the diarization error rate (DER) on development set and evaluation set, respectively, being ranked the 1st at the diarization track of the challenge.

Reverse-engineering Bar Charts Using Neural NetworksFangfang Zhou, Yong Zhao, Wenjiang Chen et al.
Reverse-engineering bar charts extracts textual and numeric information from the visual representations of bar charts to support application scenarios that require the underlying information. In this paper, we propose a neural network-based method for reverse-engineering bar charts. We adopt a neural network-based object detection model to simultaneously localize and classify textual information. This approach improves the efficiency of textual information extraction. We design an encoder-decoder framework that integrates convolutional and recurrent neural networks to extract numeric information. We further introduce an attention mechanism into the framework to achieve high accuracy and robustness. Synthetic and real-world datasets are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the method. To the best of our knowledge, this work takes the lead in constructing a complete neural network-based method of reverse-engineering bar charts.

ResNeXt and Res2Net Structures for Speaker VerificationTianyan Zhou, Yong Zhao, Jian Wu
The ResNet-based architecture has been widely adopted to extract speaker embeddings for text-independent speaker verification systems. By introducing the residual connections to the CNN and standardizing the residual blocks, the ResNet structure is capable of training deep networks to achieve highly competitive recognition performance. However, when the input feature space becomes more complicated, simply increasing the depth and width of the ResNet network may not fully realize its performance potential. In this paper, we present two extensions of the ResNet architecture, ResNeXt and Res2Net, for speaker verification. Originally proposed for image recognition, the ResNeXt and Res2Net introduce two more dimensions, cardinality and scale, in addition to depth and width, to improve the model's representation capacity. By increasing the scale dimension, the Res2Net model can represent multi-scale features with various granularities, which particularly facilitates speaker verification for short utterances. We evaluate our proposed systems on three speaker verification tasks. Experiments on the VoxCeleb test set demonstrated that the ResNeXt and Res2Net can significantly outperform the conventional ResNet model. The Res2Net model achieved superior performance by reducing the EER by 18.5% relative. Experiments on the other two internal test sets of mismatched conditions further confirmed the generalization of the ResNeXt and Res2Net architectures against noisy environment and segment length variations.

Predicting Elastic Properties of Materials from Electronic Charge Density Using 3D Deep Convolutional Neural NetworksYong Zhao, Kunpeng Yuan, Yinqiao Liu et al.
Materials representation plays a key role in machine learning based prediction of materials properties and new materials discovery. Currently both graph and 3D voxel representation methods are based on the heterogeneous elements of the crystal structures. Here, we propose to use electronic charge density (ECD) as a generic unified 3D descriptor for materials property prediction with the advantage of possessing close relation with the physical and chemical properties of materials. We developed an ECD based 3D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for predicting elastic properties of materials, in which CNNs can learn effective hierarchical features with multiple convolving and pooling operations. Extensive benchmark experiments over 2,170 Fm-3m face-centered-cubic (FCC) materials show that our ECD based CNNs can achieve good performance for elasticity prediction. Especially, our CNN models based on the fusion of elemental Magpie features and ECD descriptors achieved the best 5-fold cross-validation performance. More importantly, we showed that our ECD based CNN models can achieve significantly better extrapolation performance when evaluated over non-redundant datasets where there are few neighbor training samples around test samples. As additional validation, we evaluated the predictive performance of our models on 329 materials of space group Fm-3m by comparing to DFT calculated values, which shows better prediction power of our model for bulk modulus than shear modulus. Due to the unified representation power of ECD, it is expected that our ECD based CNN approach can also be applied to predict other physical and chemical properties of crystalline materials.

Global Attention based Graph Convolutional Neural Networks for Improved Materials Property PredictionSteph-Yves Louis, Yong Zhao, Alireza Nasiri et al.
Machine learning (ML) methods have gained increasing popularity in exploring and developing new materials. More specifically, graph neural network (GNN) has been applied in predicting material properties. In this work, we develop a novel model, GATGNN, for predicting inorganic material properties based on graph neural networks composed of multiple graph-attention layers (GAT) and a global attention layer. Through the application of the GAT layers, our model can efficiently learn the complex bonds shared among the atoms within each atom's local neighborhood. Subsequently, the global attention layer provides the weight coefficients of each atom in the inorganic crystal material which are used to considerably improve our model's performance. Notably, with the development of our GATGNN model, we show that our method is able to both outperform the previous models' predictions and provide insight into the crystallization of the material.

Machine Learning based prediction of noncentrosymmetric crystal materialsYuqi Song, Joseph Lindsay, Yong Zhao et al.
Noncentrosymmetric materials play a critical role in many important applications such as laser technology, communication systems,quantum computing, cybersecurity, and etc. However, the experimental discovery of new noncentrosymmetric materials is extremely difficult. Here we present a machine learning model that could predict whether the composition of a potential crystalline structure would be centrosymmetric or not. By evaluating a diverse set of composition features calculated using matminer featurizer package coupled with different machine learning algorithms, we find that Random Forest Classifiers give the best performance for noncentrosymmetric material prediction, reaching an accuracy of 84.8% when evaluated with 10 fold cross-validation on the dataset with 82,506 samples extracted from Materials Project. A random forest model trained with materials with only 3 elements gives even higher accuracy of 86.9%. We apply our ML model to screen potential noncentrosymmetric materials from 2,000,000 hypothetical materials generated by our inverse design engine and report the top 20 candidate noncentrosymmetric materials with 2 to 4 elements and top 20 borate candidates

Advances in Online Audio-Visual Meeting TranscriptionTakuya Yoshioka, Igor Abramovski, Cem Aksoylar et al.
This paper describes a system that generates speaker-annotated transcripts of meetings by using a microphone array and a 360-degree camera. The hallmark of the system is its ability to handle overlapped speech, which has been an unsolved problem in realistic settings for over a decade. We show that this problem can be addressed by using a continuous speech separation approach. In addition, we describe an online audio-visual speaker diarization method that leverages face tracking and identification, sound source localization, speaker identification, and, if available, prior speaker information for robustness to various real world challenges. All components are integrated in a meeting transcription framework called SRD, which stands for "separate, recognize, and diarize". Experimental results using recordings of natural meetings involving up to 11 attendees are reported. The continuous speech separation improves a word error rate (WER) by 16.1% compared with a highly tuned beamformer. When a complete list of meeting attendees is available, the discrepancy between WER and speaker-attributed WER is only 1.0%, indicating accurate word-to-speaker association. This increases marginally to 1.6% when 50% of the attendees are unknown to the system.
