Aesthetically Relevant Image Captioning

Zhipeng Zhong, Fei Zhou, Guoping Qiu

Image aesthetic quality assessment (AQA) aims to assign numerical aesthetic ratings to images whilst image aesthetic captioning (IAC) aims to generate textual descriptions of the aesthetic aspects of images. In this paper, we study image AQA and IAC together and present a new IAC method termed Aesthetically Relevant Image Captioning (ARIC). Based on the observation that most textual comments of an image are about objects and their interactions rather than aspects of aesthetics, we first introduce the concept of Aesthetic Relevance Score (ARS) of a sentence and have developed a model to automatically label a sentence with its ARS. We then use the ARS to design the ARIC model which includes an ARS weighted IAC loss function and an ARS based diverse aesthetic caption selector (DACS). We present extensive experimental results to show the soundness of the ARS concept and the effectiveness of the ARIC model by demonstrating that texts with higher ARS's can predict the aesthetic ratings more accurately and that the new ARIC model can generate more accurate, aesthetically more relevant and more diverse image captions. Furthermore, a large new research database containing 510K images with over 5 million comments and 350K aesthetic scores, and code for implementing ARIC are available at https://github.com/PengZai/ARIC.

Restoration of User Videos Shared on Social Media

Hongming Luo, Fei Zhou, Kin-man Lam et al.

User videos shared on social media platforms usually suffer from degradations caused by unknown proprietary processing procedures, which means that their visual quality is poorer than that of the originals. This paper presents a new general video restoration framework for the restoration of user videos shared on social media platforms. In contrast to most deep learning-based video restoration methods that perform end-to-end mapping, where feature extraction is mostly treated as a black box, in the sense that what role a feature plays is often unknown, our new method, termed Video restOration through adapTive dEgradation Sensing (VOTES), introduces the concept of a degradation feature map (DFM) to explicitly guide the video restoration process. Specifically, for each video frame, we first adaptively estimate its DFM to extract features representing the difficulty of restoring its different regions. We then feed the DFM to a convolutional neural network (CNN) to compute hierarchical degradation features to modulate an end-to-end video restoration backbone network, such that more attention is paid explicitly to potentially more difficult to restore areas, which in turn leads to enhanced restoration performance. We will explain the design rationale of the VOTES framework and present extensive experimental results to show that the new VOTES method outperforms various state-of-the-art techniques both quantitatively and qualitatively. In addition, we contribute a large scale real-world database of user videos shared on different social media platforms. Codes and datasets are available at https://github.com/luohongming/VOTES.git

Linear normalised hash function for clustering gene sequences and identifying reference sequences from multiple sequence alignments

Manal Helal, Fanrong Kong, Sharon C-A Chen et al.

The aim of this study was to develop a method that would identify the cluster centroids and the optimal number of clusters for a given sensitivity level and could work equally well for the different sequence datasets. A novel method that combines the linear mapping hash function and multiple sequence alignment (MSA) was developed. This method takes advantage of the already sorted by similarity sequences from the MSA output, and identifies the optimal number of clusters, clusters cut-offs, and clusters centroids that can represent reference gene vouchers for the different species. The linear mapping hash function can map an already ordered by similarity distance matrix to indices to reveal gaps in the values around which the optimal cut-offs of the different clusters can be identified. The method was evaluated using sets of closely related (16S rRNA gene sequences of Nocardia species) and highly variable (VP1 genomic region of Enterovirus 71) sequences and outperformed existing unsupervised machine learning clustering methods and dimensionality reduction methods. This method does not require prior knowledge of the number of clusters or the distance between clusters, handles clusters of different sizes and shapes, and scales linearly with the dataset. The combination of MSA with the linear mapping hash function is a computationally efficient way of gene sequence clustering and can be a valuable tool for the assessment of similarity, clustering of different microbial genomes, identifying reference sequences, and for the study of evolution of bacteria and viruses.

Score dynamics: scaling molecular dynamics with picoseconds timestep via conditional diffusion model

Tim Hsu, Babak Sadigh, Vasily Bulatov et al.

We propose score dynamics (SD), a general framework for learning accelerated evolution operators with large timesteps from molecular-dynamics simulations. SD is centered around scores, or derivatives of the transition log-probability with respect to the dynamical degrees of freedom. The latter play the same role as force fields in MD but are used in denoising diffusion probability models to generate discrete transitions of the dynamical variables in an SD timestep, which can be orders of magnitude larger than a typical MD timestep. In this work, we construct graph neural network based score dynamics models of realistic molecular systems that are evolved with 10~ps timesteps. We demonstrate the efficacy of score dynamics with case studies of alanine dipeptide and short alkanes in aqueous solution. Both equilibrium predictions derived from the stationary distributions of the conditional probability and kinetic predictions for the transition rates and transition paths are in good agreement with MD. Our current SD implementation is about two orders of magnitude faster than the MD counterpart for the systems studied in this work. Open challenges and possible future remedies to improve score dynamics are also discussed.

Transformer-Based Dual-Optical Attention Fusion Crowd Head Point Counting and Localization Network

Fei Zhou, Yi Li, Mingqing Zhu

In this paper, the dual-optical attention fusion crowd head point counting model (TAPNet) is proposed to address the problem of the difficulty of accurate counting in complex scenes such as crowd dense occlusion and low light in crowd counting tasks under UAV view. The model designs a dual-optical attention fusion module (DAFP) by introducing complementary information from infrared images to improve the accuracy and robustness of all-day crowd counting. In order to fully utilize different modal information and solve the problem of inaccurate localization caused by systematic misalignment between image pairs, this paper also proposes an adaptive two-optical feature decomposition fusion module (AFDF). In addition, we optimize the training strategy to improve the model robustness through spatial random offset data augmentation. Experiments on two challenging public datasets, DroneRGBT and GAIIC2, show that the proposed method outperforms existing techniques in terms of performance, especially in challenging dense low-light scenes. Collaborative Auto-encoding for Blind Image Quality Assessment

Zehong Zhou, Fei Zhou, Guoping Qiu

Blind image quality assessment (BIQA) is a challenging problem with important real-world applications. Recent efforts attempting to exploit powerful representations by deep neural networks (DNN) are hindered by the lack of subjectively annotated data. This paper presents a novel BIQA method which overcomes this fundamental obstacle. Specifically, we design a pair of collaborative autoencoders (COAE) consisting of a content autoencoder (CAE) and a distortion autoencoder (DAE) that work together to extract content and distortion representations, which are shown to be highly descriptive of image quality. While the CAE follows a standard codec procedure, we introduce the CAE-encoded feature as an extra input to the DAE's decoder for reconstructing distorted images, thus effectively forcing DAE's encoder to extract distortion representations. The self-supervised learning framework allows the COAE including two feature extractors to be trained by almost unlimited amount of data, thus leaving limited samples with annotations to finetune a BIQA model. We will show that the proposed BIQA method achieves state-of-the-art performance and has superior generalization capability over other learning based models. SurroundNet: Towards Effective Low-Light Image Enhancement

Fei Zhou, Xin Sun, Junyu Dong et al.

Although Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs) has made substantial progress in the low-light image enhancement task, one critical problem of CNNs is the paradox of model complexity and performance. This paper presents a novel SurroundNet which only involves less than 150$K$ parameters (about 80-98 percent size reduction compared to SOTAs) and achieves very competitive performance. The proposed network comprises several Adaptive Retinex Blocks (ARBlock), which can be viewed as a novel extension of Single Scale Retinex in feature space. The core of our ARBlock is an efficient illumination estimation function called Adaptive Surround Function (ASF). It can be regarded as a general form of surround functions and be implemented by convolution layers. In addition, we also introduce a Low-Exposure Denoiser (LED) to smooth the low-light image before the enhancement. We evaluate the proposed method on the real-world low-light dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that the superiority of our submitted SurroundNet in both performance and network parameters against State-of-the-Art low-light image enhancement methods. Super-resolving Compressed Images via Parallel and Series Integration of Artifact Reduction and Resolution Enhancement

Hongming Luo, Fei Zhou, Guangsen Liao et al.

In real-world applications, such as sharing photos on social media platforms, images are always not only sub-sampled but also heavily compressed thus often containing various artefacts. Simple methods for enhancing the resolution of such images will exacerbate the artefacts, rendering them visually objectionable. In spite of its high practical values, super-resolving compressed images is not well studied in the literature. In this paper, we propose a novel compressed image super resolution (CISR) framework based on parallel and series integration of artefacts removal and resolution enhancement. Based on a mathematical inference model for estimating a clean low-resolution (LR) image and a clean high-resolution (HR) image from a down-sampled and compressed observation, we have designed a CISR architecture consisting of two deep neural network modules: the artefacts removal module (ARM) and the resolution enhancement module (REM). The ARM and the REM work in parallel with both taking the compressed LR image as their inputs, at the same time they also work in series with the REM taking the output of the ARM as one of its inputs and the ARM taking the output of the REM as its other input. A technique called unfolding is introduced to recursively suppress the compression artefacts and restore the image resolution. A unique feature of our CISR system is that it exploits the parallel and series connections between the ARM and the REM, and recursive optimization to reduce the model's dependency on specific types of degradation thus making it possible to train a single model to super-resolve images compressed by different methods to different qualities. Spectral Regularization for Combating Mode Collapse in GANs

Kanglin Liu, Wenming Tang, Fei Zhou et al.

Despite excellent progress in recent years, mode collapse remains a major unsolved problem in generative adversarial networks (GANs).In this paper, we present spectral regularization for GANs (SR-GANs), a new and robust method for combating the mode collapse problem in GANs. Theoretical analysis shows that the optimal solution to the discriminator has a strong relationship to the spectral distributions of the weight matrix. Therefore, we monitor the spectral distribution in the discriminator of spectral normalized GANs (SN-GANs), and discover a phenomenon which we refer to as spectral collapse, where a large number of singular values of the weight matrices drop dramatically when mode collapse occurs. We show that there are strong evidence linking mode collapse to spectral collapse; and based on this link, we set out to tackle spectral collapse as a surrogate of mode collapse. We have developed a spectral regularization method where we compensate the spectral distributions of the weight matrices to prevent them from collapsing, which in turn successfully prevents mode collapse in GANs. We provide theoretical explanations for why SR-GANs are more stable and can provide better performances than SN-GANs. We also present extensive experimental results and analysis to show that SR-GANs not only always outperform SN-GANs but also always succeed in combating mode collapse where SN-GANs fail. Rethinking the Upsampling Layer in Hyperspectral Image Super Resolution

Haohan Shi, Fei Zhou, Xin Sun et al.

Deep learning has achieved significant success in single hyperspectral image super-resolution (SHSR); however, the high spectral dimensionality leads to a heavy computational burden, thus making it difficult to deploy in real-time scenarios. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel lightweight SHSR network, i.e., LKCA-Net, that incorporates channel attention to calibrate multi-scale channel features of hyperspectral images. Furthermore, we demonstrate, for the first time, that the low-rank property of the learnable upsampling layer is a key bottleneck in lightweight SHSR methods. To address this, we employ the low-rank approximation strategy to optimize the parameter redundancy of the learnable upsampling layer. Additionally, we introduce a knowledge distillation-based feature alignment technique to ensure the low-rank approximated network retains the same feature representation capacity as the original. We conducted extensive experiments on the Chikusei, Houston 2018, and Pavia Center datasets compared to some SOTAs. The results demonstrate that our method is competitive in performance while achieving speedups of several dozen to even hundreds of times compared to other well-performing SHSR methods.

Towards Smart Point-and-Shoot Photography

Jiawan Li, Fei Zhou, Zhipeng Zhong et al.

Hundreds of millions of people routinely take photos using their smartphones as point and shoot (PAS) cameras, yet very few would have the photography skills to compose a good shot of a scene. While traditional PAS cameras have built-in functions to ensure a photo is well focused and has the right brightness, they cannot tell the users how to compose the best shot of a scene. In this paper, we present a first of its kind smart point and shoot (SPAS) system to help users to take good photos. Our SPAS proposes to help users to compose a good shot of a scene by automatically guiding the users to adjust the camera pose live on the scene. We first constructed a large dataset containing 320K images with camera pose information from 4000 scenes. We then developed an innovative CLIP-based Composition Quality Assessment (CCQA) model to assign pseudo labels to these images. The CCQA introduces a unique learnable text embedding technique to learn continuous word embeddings capable of discerning subtle visual quality differences in the range covered by five levels of quality description words {bad, poor, fair, good, perfect}. And finally we have developed a camera pose adjustment model (CPAM) which first determines if the current view can be further improved and if so it outputs the adjust suggestion in the form of two camera pose adjustment angles. The two tasks of CPAM make decisions in a sequential manner and each involves different sets of training samples, we have developed a mixture-of-experts model with a gated loss function to train the CPAM in an end-to-end manner. We will present extensive results to demonstrate the performances of our SPAS system using publicly available image composition datasets.

Vision Language Modeling of Content, Distortion and Appearance for Image Quality Assessment

Fei Zhou, Tianhao Gu, Zhicong Huang et al.

The visual quality of an image is confounded by a number of intertwined factors including its semantic content, distortion characteristics and appearance properties such as brightness, contrast, sharpness, and colourfulness. Distilling high level knowledge about all these quality bearing attributes is crucial for developing objective Image Quality Assessment (IQA).While existing solutions have modeled some of these aspects, a comprehensive solution that involves all these important quality related attributes has not yet been developed. In this paper, we present a new blind IQA (BIQA) model termed Self-supervision and Vision-Language supervision Image QUality Evaluator (SLIQUE) that features a joint vision-language and visual contrastive representation learning framework for acquiring high level knowledge about the images semantic contents, distortion characteristics and appearance properties for IQA. For training SLIQUE, we have developed a systematic approach to constructing a first of its kind large image database annotated with all three categories of quality relevant texts. The Text Annotated Distortion, Appearance and Content (TADAC) database has over 1.6 million images annotated with textual descriptions of their semantic contents, distortion characteristics and appearance properties. The method for constructing TADAC and the database itself will be particularly useful for exploiting vision-language modeling for advanced IQA applications. Extensive experimental results show that SLIQUE has superior performances over state of the art, demonstrating the soundness of its design principle and the effectiveness of its implementation.

VHS to HDTV Video Translation using Multi-task Adversarial Learning

Hongming Luo, Guangsen Liao, Xianxu Hou et al.

There are large amount of valuable video archives in Video Home System (VHS) format. However, due to the analog nature, their quality is often poor. Compared to High-definition television (HDTV), VHS video not only has a dull color appearance but also has a lower resolution and often appears blurry. In this paper, we focus on the problem of translating VHS video to HDTV video and have developed a solution based on a novel unsupervised multi-task adversarial learning model. Inspired by the success of generative adversarial network (GAN) and CycleGAN, we employ cycle consistency loss, adversarial loss and perceptual loss together to learn a translation model. An important innovation of our work is the incorporation of super-resolution model and color transfer model that can solve unsupervised multi-task problem. To our knowledge, this is the first work that dedicated to the study of the relation between VHS and HDTV and the first computational solution to translate VHS to HDTV. We present experimental results to demonstrate the effectiveness of our solution qualitatively and quantitatively.

Towards Disentangling Latent Space for Unsupervised Semantic Face Editing

Kanglin Liu, Gaofeng Cao, Fei Zhou et al.

Facial attributes in StyleGAN generated images are entangled in the latent space which makes it very difficult to independently control a specific attribute without affecting the others. Supervised attribute editing requires annotated training data which is difficult to obtain and limits the editable attributes to those with labels. Therefore, unsupervised attribute editing in an disentangled latent space is key to performing neat and versatile semantic face editing. In this paper, we present a new technique termed Structure-Texture Independent Architecture with Weight Decomposition and Orthogonal Regularization (STIA-WO) to disentangle the latent space for unsupervised semantic face editing. By applying STIA-WO to GAN, we have developed a StyleGAN termed STGAN-WO which performs weight decomposition through utilizing the style vector to construct a fully controllable weight matrix to regulate image synthesis, and employs orthogonal regularization to ensure each entry of the style vector only controls one independent feature matrix. To further disentangle the facial attributes, STGAN-WO introduces a structure-texture independent architecture which utilizes two independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.) latent vectors to control the synthesis of the texture and structure components in a disentangled way. Unsupervised semantic editing is achieved by moving the latent code in the coarse layers along its orthogonal directions to change texture related attributes or changing the latent code in the fine layers to manipulate structure related ones. We present experimental results which show that our new STGAN-WO can achieve better attribute editing than state of the art methods.
