InterPrompt: Interpretable Prompting for Interrelated Interpersonal Risk Factors in Reddit Posts

Mental health professionals and clinicians have observed the upsurge of mental disorders due to Interpersonal Risk Factors (IRFs). To simulate the human-in-the-loop triaging scenario for early detection of mental health disorders, we recognized textual indications to ascertain these IRFs : Thwarted Belongingness (TBe) and Perceived Burdensomeness (PBu) within personal narratives. In light of this, we use N-shot learning with GPT-3 model on the IRF dataset, and underscored the importance of fine-tuning GPT-3 model to incorporate the context-specific sensitivity and the interconnectedness of textual cues that represent both IRFs. In this paper, we introduce an Interpretable Prompting (InterPrompt)} method to boost the attention mechanism by fine-tuning the GPT-3 model. This allows a more sophisticated level of language modification by adjusting the pre-trained weights. Our model learns to detect usual patterns and underlying connections across both the IRFs, which leads to better system-level explainability and trustworthiness. The results of our research demonstrate that all four variants of GPT-3 model, when fine-tuned with InterPrompt, perform considerably better as compared to the baseline methods, both in terms of classification and explanation generation.

RSPC: A Benchmark for Modeling Stress and Psychiatric Conditions in Digitally Mediated Relationships using Psychiatrist Annotations

In NLP, mental health conditions are often modeled as isolated phenomena, without interpersonal context. We use Reddit posts about long-distance relationships to capture both mental health distress and associated relational triggers. We introduce the Relational Stress and Psychiatry Corpus (RSPC) containing 1,799 Reddit posts annotated by psychiatrists for diagnostic categories, including the most prevalent mood disorders (anxiety and depression), relational stressor triggers, and indications of relationship phase. We benchmark seven fine-tuned transformer models and five large language models across multi-label disorder classification, relational trigger detection, and temporal phase prediction tasks. We find clear task-dependent differences between model families, with Claude-3-Haiku achieving the best disorder classification performance (Macro-F1 = 0.538) and GPT-4o obtaining the strongest relational trigger detection performance (Macro-F1 = 0.519), suggesting distinct model capabilities. We further find strong associations between anxiety disorders and chronic relational uncertainty. Overall, RSPC establishes a benchmark for NLP tasks that consider relational context and supports a shift from individual-centric to context-aware mental health modeling that captures the social and temporal dynamics of distress.

BetXplain: An Explanation-Annotated Dataset for Detecting Manipulative Betting Advertisements on Social Media

The promotion of betting applications on social media platforms has increased significantly in recent years. Many of these advertisements use persuasive techniques that may mislead users, encourage risky behavior, and potentially influence users' mental well-being. However, research on the automated detection of manipulative and deceptive betting advertisements remains limited due to the lack of publicly available annotated datasets. In this work, we introduce a new dataset of betting-related advertisements collected from two widely used social media platforms, Instagram and Reddit. The advertisements were manually annotated for manipulative and deceptive advertising practices. In addition to classification labels, the dataset includes human-provided explanations that describe the reasoning behind each annotation, enabling research into explainable approaches to detecting manipulative advertising. Furthermore, we analyze the strategies commonly used in betting advertisements and examine how these persuasive tactics may impact users' mental health. The proposed framework can also enable practical applications such as browser plugins that warn users about manipulative betting advertisements and automated web crawlers that help regulatory authorities monitor and detect such promotions online.

Reliability Analysis of Psychological Concept Extraction and Classification in User-penned Text

The social NLP research community witness a recent surge in the computational advancements of mental health analysis to build responsible AI models for a complex interplay between language use and self-perception. Such responsible AI models aid in quantifying the psychological concepts from user-penned texts on social media. On thinking beyond the low-level (classification) task, we advance the existing binary classification dataset, towards a higher-level task of reliability analysis through the lens of explanations, posing it as one of the safety measures. We annotate the LoST dataset to capture nuanced textual cues that suggest the presence of low self-esteem in the posts of Reddit users. We further state that the NLP models developed for determining the presence of low self-esteem, focus more on three types of textual cues: (i) Trigger: words that triggers mental disturbance, (ii) LoST indicators: text indicators emphasizing low self-esteem, and (iii) Consequences: words describing the consequences of mental disturbance. We implement existing classifiers to examine the attention mechanism in pre-trained language models (PLMs) for a domain-specific psychology-grounded task. Our findings suggest the need of shifting the focus of PLMs from Trigger and Consequences to a more comprehensive explanation, emphasizing LoST indicators while determining low self-esteem in Reddit posts.

M-HELP: Using Social Media Data to Detect Mental Health Help-Seeking Signals

Mental health disorders are a global crisis. While various datasets exist for detecting such disorders, there remains a critical gap in identifying individuals actively seeking help. This paper introduces a novel dataset, M-Help, specifically designed to detect help-seeking behavior on social media. The dataset goes beyond traditional labels by identifying not only help-seeking activity but also specific mental health disorders and their underlying causes, such as relationship challenges or financial stressors. AI models trained on M-Help can address three key tasks: identifying help-seekers, diagnosing mental health conditions, and uncovering the root causes of issues.
