How Does It Feel? Self-Supervised Costmap Learning for Off-Road Vehicle TraversabilityMateo Guaman Castro, Samuel Triest, Wenshan Wang et al.
Estimating terrain traversability in off-road environments requires reasoning about complex interaction dynamics between the robot and these terrains. However, it is challenging to create informative labels to learn a model in a supervised manner for these interactions. We propose a method that learns to predict traversability costmaps by combining exteroceptive environmental information with proprioceptive terrain interaction feedback in a self-supervised manner. Additionally, we propose a novel way of incorporating robot velocity in the costmap prediction pipeline. We validate our method in multiple short and large-scale navigation tasks on challenging off-road terrains using two different large, all-terrain robots. Our short-scale navigation results show that using our learned costmaps leads to overall smoother navigation, and provides the robot with a more fine-grained understanding of the robot-terrain interactions. Our large-scale navigation trials show that we can reduce the number of interventions by up to 57% compared to an occupancy-based navigation baseline in challenging off-road courses ranging from 400 m to 3150 m. Plans often change due to changes in the situation or our understanding of the situation. Sometimes, a feasible plan may not even exist, and identifying such infeasibilities is useful to determine when requirements need adjustment. Common planning approaches focus on efficient one-shot planning in feasible cases rather than updating domains or detecting infeasibility. We propose a Petri net reachability relaxation to enable robust invariant synthesis, efficient goal-unreachability detection, and helpful infeasibility explanations. We further leverage incremental constraint solvers to support goal and constraint updates. Empirically, compared to baselines, our system produces a comparable number of invariants, detects up to 2 times more infeasibilities, performs competitively in one-shot planning, and outperforms in sequential plan updates in the tested domains.

Stratified Topological Autonomy for Long-Range Coordination (STALC)Cora A. Duggan, Adam Goertz, Adam Polevoy et al.
In this paper, we present Stratified Topological Autonomy for Long-Range Coordination (STALC), a hierarchical planning approach for multi-robot coordination in real-world environments with significant inter-robot spatial and temporal dependencies. At its core, STALC consists of a multi-robot graph-based planner which combines a topological graph with a novel, computationally efficient mixed-integer programming formulation to generate highly-coupled multi-robot plans in seconds. To enable autonomous planning across different spatial and temporal scales, we construct our graphs so that they capture connectivity between free-space regions and other problem-specific features, such as traversability or risk. We then use receding-horizon planners to achieve local collision avoidance and formation control. To evaluate our approach, we consider a multi-robot reconnaissance scenario where robots must autonomously coordinate to navigate through an environment while minimizing the risk of detection by observers. Through simulation-based experiments, we show that our approach is able to scale to address complex multi-robot planning scenarios. Through hardware experiments, we demonstrate our ability to generate graphs from real-world data and successfully plan across the entire hierarchy to achieve shared objectives.

Deep Bayesian Future Fusion for Self-Supervised, High-Resolution, Off-Road MappingShubhra Aich, Wenshan Wang, Parv Maheshwari et al.
High-speed off-road navigation requires long-range, high-resolution maps to enable robots to safely navigate over different surfaces while avoiding dangerous obstacles. However, due to limited computational power and sensing noise, most approaches to off-road mapping focus on producing coarse (20-40cm) maps of the environment. In this paper, we propose Future Fusion, a framework capable of generating dense, high-resolution maps from sparse sensing data (30m forward at 2cm). This is accomplished by - (1) the efficient realization of the well-known Bayes filtering within the standard deep learning models that explicitly accounts for the sparsity pattern in stereo and LiDAR depth data, and (2) leveraging perceptual losses common in generative image completion. The proposed methodology outperforms the conventional baselines. Moreover, the learned features and the completed dense maps lead to improvements in the downstream navigation task.

Map Prediction and Generative Entropy for Multi-Agent ExplorationAlexander Spinos, Bradley Woosley, Justin Rokisky et al.
Traditionally, autonomous reconnaissance applications have acted on explicit sets of historical observations. Aided by recent breakthroughs in generative technologies, this work enables robot teams to act beyond what is currently known about the environment by inferring a distribution of reasonable interpretations of the scene. We developed a map predictor that inpaints the unknown space in a multi-agent 2D occupancy map during an exploration mission. From a comparison of several inpainting methods, we found that a fine-tuned latent diffusion inpainting model could provide rich and coherent interpretations of simulated urban environments with relatively little computation time. By iteratively inferring interpretations of the scene throughout an exploration run, we are able to identify areas that exhibit high uncertainty in the prediction, which we formalize with the concept of generative entropy. We prioritize tasks in regions of high generative entropy, hypothesizing that this will expedite convergence on an accurate predicted map of the scene. In our study we juxtapose this new paradigm of task ranking with the state of the art, which ranks regions to explore by those which maximize expected information recovery. We compare both of these methods in a simulated urban environment with three vehicles. Our results demonstrate that by using our new task ranking method, we can predict a correct scene significantly faster than with a traditional information-guided method.

Self-Reflective Terrain-Aware Robot Adaptation for Consistent Off-Road Ground NavigationSriram Siva, Maggie Wigness, John G. Rogers et al.
Ground robots require the crucial capability of traversing unstructured and unprepared terrains and avoiding obstacles to complete tasks in real-world robotics applications such as disaster response. When a robot operates in off-road field environments such as forests, the robot's actual behaviors often do not match its expected or planned behaviors, due to changes in the characteristics of terrains and the robot itself. Therefore, the capability of robot adaptation for consistent behavior generation is essential for maneuverability on unstructured off-road terrains. In order to address the challenge, we propose a novel method of self-reflective terrain-aware adaptation for ground robots to generate consistent controls to navigate over unstructured off-road terrains, which enables robots to more accurately execute the expected behaviors through robot self-reflection while adapting to varying unstructured terrains. To evaluate our method's performance, we conduct extensive experiments using real ground robots with various functionality changes over diverse unstructured off-road terrains. The comprehensive experimental results have shown that our self-reflective terrain-aware adaptation method enables ground robots to generate consistent navigational behaviors and outperforms the compared previous and baseline techniques.

Risk Averse Bayesian Reward Learning for Autonomous Navigation from Human DemonstrationChristian Ellis, Maggie Wigness, John G. Rogers et al.
Traditional imitation learning provides a set of methods and algorithms to learn a reward function or policy from expert demonstrations. Learning from demonstration has been shown to be advantageous for navigation tasks as it allows for machine learning non-experts to quickly provide information needed to learn complex traversal behaviors. However, a minimal set of demonstrations is unlikely to capture all relevant information needed to achieve the desired behavior in every possible future operational environment. Due to distributional shift among environments, a robot may encounter features that were rarely or never observed during training for which the appropriate reward value is uncertain, leading to undesired outcomes. This paper proposes a Bayesian technique which quantifies uncertainty over the weights of a linear reward function given a dataset of minimal human demonstrations to operate safely in dynamic environments. This uncertainty is quantified and incorporated into a risk averse set of weights used to generate cost maps for planning. Experiments in a 3-D environment with a simulated robot show that our proposed algorithm enables a robot to avoid dangerous terrain completely in two out of three test scenarios and accumulates a lower amount of risk than related approaches in all scenarios without requiring any additional demonstrations.

Robot Adaptation for Generating Consistent Navigational Behaviors over Unstructured Off-Road TerrainSriram Siva, Maggie Wigness, John G. Rogers et al.
Terrain adaptation is an essential capability for a ground robot to effectively traverse unstructured off-road terrain in real-world field environments such as forests. However, the expected robot behaviors generated by terrain adaptation methods cannot always be executed accurately due to setbacks such as wheel slip and reduced tire pressure. To address this problem, we propose a novel approach for consistent behavior generation that enables the ground robot's actual behaviors to more accurately match expected behaviors while adapting to a variety of unstructured off-road terrain. Our approach learns offset behaviors that are used to compensate for the inconsistency between the actual and expected behaviors without requiring the explicit modeling of various setbacks. Our approach is also able to estimate the importance of the multi-modal features to improve terrain representations for better adaptation. In addition, we develop an algorithmic solver for our formulated regularized optimization problem, which is guaranteed to converge to the global optimal solution. To evaluate the method, we perform extensive experiments using various unstructured off-road terrain in real-world field environments. Experimental results have validated that our approach enables robots to traverse complex unstructured off-road terrain with more navigational behavior consistency, and it outperforms previous methods, particularly so on challenging terrain.

ScoutBot: A Dialogue System for Collaborative NavigationStephanie M. Lukin, Felix Gervits, Cory J. Hayes et al.
ScoutBot is a dialogue interface to physical and simulated robots that supports collaborative exploration of environments. The demonstration will allow users to issue unconstrained spoken language commands to ScoutBot. ScoutBot will prompt for clarification if the user's instruction needs additional input. It is trained on human-robot dialogue collected from Wizard-of-Oz experiments, where robot responses were initiated by a human wizard in previous interactions. The demonstration will show a simulated ground robot (Clearpath Jackal) in a simulated environment supported by ROS (Robot Operating System).
