Text Injection for Capitalization and Turn-Taking Prediction in Speech ModelsShaan Bijwadia, Shuo-yiin Chang, Weiran Wang et al.
Text injection for automatic speech recognition (ASR), wherein unpaired text-only data is used to supplement paired audio-text data, has shown promising improvements for word error rate. This study examines the use of text injection for auxiliary tasks, which are the non-ASR tasks often performed by an E2E model. In this work, we use joint end-to-end and internal language model training (JEIT) as our text injection algorithm to train an ASR model which performs two auxiliary tasks. The first is capitalization, which is a de-normalization task. The second is turn-taking prediction, which attempts to identify whether a user has completed their conversation turn in a digital assistant interaction. We show results demonstrating that our text injection method boosts capitalization performance for long-tail data, and improves turn-taking detection recall.

A Multimodal Data Fusion Generative Adversarial Network for Real Time Underwater Sound Speed Field ConstructionWei Huang, Yuqiang Huang, Yanan Wu et al.
Sound speed profiles (SSPs) are essential parameters underwater that affects the propagation mode of underwater signals and has a critical impact on the energy efficiency of underwater acoustic communication and accuracy of underwater acoustic positioning. Traditionally, SSPs can be obtained by matching field processing (MFP), compressive sensing (CS), and deep learning (DL) methods. However, existing methods mainly rely on on-site underwater sonar observation data, which put forward strict requirements on the deployment of sonar observation systems. To achieve high-precision estimation of sound velocity distribution in a given sea area without on-site underwater data measurement, we propose a multi-modal data-fusion generative adversarial network model with residual attention block (MDF-RAGAN) for SSP construction. To improve the model's ability for capturing global spatial feature correlations, we embedded the attention mechanisms, and use residual modules for deeply capturing small disturbances in the deep ocean sound velocity distribution caused by changes of SST. Experimental results on real open dataset show that the proposed model outperforms other state-of-the-art methods, which achieves an accuracy with an error of less than 0.3m/s. Specifically, MDF-RAGAN not only outperforms convolutional neural network (CNN) and spatial interpolation (SITP) by nearly a factor of two, but also achieves about 65.8\% root mean square error (RMSE) reduction compared to mean profile, which fully reflects the enhancement of overall profile matching by multi-source fusion and cross-modal attention.

Predicting Compact Phrasal Rewrites with Large Language Models for ASR Post EditingHao Zhang, Felix Stahlberg, Shankar Kumar
Large Language Models (LLMs) excel at rewriting tasks such as text style transfer and grammatical error correction. While there is considerable overlap between the inputs and outputs in these tasks, the decoding cost still increases with output length, regardless of the amount of overlap. By leveraging the overlap between the input and the output, Kaneko and Okazaki (2023) proposed model-agnostic edit span representations to compress the rewrites to save computation. They reported an output length reduction rate of nearly 80% with minimal accuracy impact in four rewriting tasks. In this paper, we propose alternative edit phrase representations inspired by phrase-based statistical machine translation. We systematically compare our phrasal representations with their span representations. We apply the LLM rewriting model to the task of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) post editing and show that our target-phrase-only edit representation has the best efficiency-accuracy trade-off. On the LibriSpeech test set, our method closes 50-60% of the WER gap between the edit span model and the full rewrite model while losing only 10-20% of the length reduction rate of the edit span model.

Semantic Segmentation with Bidirectional Language Models Improves Long-form ASRW. Ronny Huang, Hao Zhang, Shankar Kumar et al.
We propose a method of segmenting long-form speech by separating semantically complete sentences within the utterance. This prevents the ASR decoder from needlessly processing faraway context while also preventing it from missing relevant context within the current sentence. Semantically complete sentence boundaries are typically demarcated by punctuation in written text; but unfortunately, spoken real-world utterances rarely contain punctuation. We address this limitation by distilling punctuation knowledge from a bidirectional teacher language model (LM) trained on written, punctuated text. We compare our segmenter, which is distilled from the LM teacher, against a segmenter distilled from a acoustic-pause-based teacher used in other works, on a streaming ASR pipeline. The pipeline with our segmenter achieves a 3.2% relative WER gain along with a 60 ms median end-of-segment latency reduction on a YouTube captioning task.
