Improving Vision Anomaly Detection with the Guidance of Language Modality

Dong Chen, Kaihang Pan, Guoming Wang et al.

Recent years have seen a surge of interest in anomaly detection for tackling industrial defect detection, event detection, etc. However, existing unsupervised anomaly detectors, particularly those for the vision modality, face significant challenges due to redundant information and sparse latent space. Conversely, the language modality performs well due to its relatively single data. This paper tackles the aforementioned challenges for vision modality from a multimodal point of view. Specifically, we propose Cross-modal Guidance (CMG), which consists of Cross-modal Entropy Reduction (CMER) and Cross-modal Linear Embedding (CMLE), to tackle the redundant information issue and sparse space issue, respectively. CMER masks parts of the raw image and computes the matching score with the text. Then, CMER discards irrelevant pixels to make the detector focus on critical contents. To learn a more compact latent space for the vision anomaly detector, CMLE learns a correlation structure matrix from the language modality, and then the latent space of vision modality will be learned with the guidance of the matrix. Thereafter, the vision latent space will get semantically similar images closer. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Particularly, CMG outperforms the baseline that only uses images by 16.81%. Ablation experiments further confirm the synergy among the proposed methods, as each component depends on the other to achieve optimal performance.

GMFVAD: Using Grained Multi-modal Feature to Improve Video Anomaly Detection

Guangyu Dai, Dong Chen, Siliang Tang et al.

Video anomaly detection (VAD) is a challenging task that detects anomalous frames in continuous surveillance videos. Most previous work utilizes the spatio-temporal correlation of visual features to distinguish whether there are abnormalities in video snippets. Recently, some works attempt to introduce multi-modal information, like text feature, to enhance the results of video anomaly detection. However, these works merely incorporate text features into video snippets in a coarse manner, overlooking the significant amount of redundant information that may exist within the video snippets. Therefore, we propose to leverage the diversity among multi-modal information to further refine the extracted features, reducing the redundancy in visual features, and we propose Grained Multi-modal Feature for Video Anomaly Detection (GMFVAD). Specifically, we generate more grained multi-modal feature based on the video snippet, which summarizes the main content, and text features based on the captions of original video will be introduced to further enhance the visual features of highlighted portions. Experiments show that the proposed GMFVAD achieves state-of-the-art performance on four mainly datasets. Ablation experiments also validate that the improvement of GMFVAD is due to the reduction of redundant information.

A Versatile Keyframe-Based Structureless Filter for Visual Inertial Odometry

Jianzhu Huai, Yukai Lin, Charles Toth et al.

Motion estimation by fusing data from at least a camera and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) enables many applications in robotics. However, among the multitude of Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) methods, few efficiently estimate device motion with consistent covariance, and calibrate sensor parameters online for handling data from consumer sensors. This paper addresses the gap with a Keyframe-based Structureless Filter (KSF). For efficiency, landmarks are not included in the filter's state vector. For robustness, KSF associates feature observations and manages state variables using the concept of keyframes. For flexibility, KSF supports anytime calibration of IMU systematic errors, as well as extrinsic, intrinsic, and temporal parameters of each camera. Estimator consistency and observability of sensor parameters were analyzed by simulation. Sensitivity to design options, e.g., feature matching method and camera count was studied with the EuRoC benchmark. Sensor parameter estimation was evaluated on raw TUM VI sequences and smartphone data. Moreover, pose estimation accuracy was evaluated on EuRoC and TUM VI sequences versus recent VIO methods. These tests confirm that KSF reliably calibrates sensor parameters when the data contain adequate motion, and consistently estimate motion with accuracy rivaling recent VIO methods. Our implementation runs at 42 Hz with stereo camera images on a consumer laptop.
