IRON: Inverse Rendering by Optimizing Neural SDFs and Materials from Photometric Images

Kai Zhang, Fujun Luan, Zhengqi Li et al. · deepmind

We propose a neural inverse rendering pipeline called IRON that operates on photometric images and outputs high-quality 3D content in the format of triangle meshes and material textures readily deployable in existing graphics pipelines. Our method adopts neural representations for geometry as signed distance fields (SDFs) and materials during optimization to enjoy their flexibility and compactness, and features a hybrid optimization scheme for neural SDFs: first, optimize using a volumetric radiance field approach to recover correct topology, then optimize further using edgeaware physics-based surface rendering for geometry refinement and disentanglement of materials and lighting. In the second stage, we also draw inspiration from mesh-based differentiable rendering, and design a novel edge sampling algorithm for neural SDFs to further improve performance. We show that our IRON achieves significantly better inverse rendering quality compared to prior works. Our project page is here: https://kai-46.github.io/IRON-website/

DBT-DMAE: An Effective Multivariate Time Series Pre-Train Model under Missing Data

Kai Zhang, Qinmin Yang, Chao Li

Multivariate time series(MTS) is a universal data type related to many practical applications. However, MTS suffers from missing data problems, which leads to degradation or even collapse of the downstream tasks, such as prediction and classification. The concurrent missing data handling procedures could inevitably arouse the biased estimation and redundancy-training problem when encountering multiple downstream tasks. This paper presents a universally applicable MTS pre-train model, DBT-DMAE, to conquer the abovementioned obstacle. First, a missing representation module is designed by introducing dynamic positional embedding and random masking processing to characterize the missing symptom. Second, we proposed an auto-encoder structure to obtain the generalized MTS encoded representation utilizing an ameliorated TCN structure called dynamic-bidirectional-TCN as the basic unit, which integrates the dynamic kernel and time-fliping trick to draw temporal features effectively. Finally, the overall feed-in and loss strategy is established to ensure the adequate training of the whole model. Comparative experiment results manifest that the DBT-DMAE outperforms the other state-of-the-art methods in six real-world datasets and two different downstream tasks. Moreover, ablation and interpretability experiments are delivered to verify the validity of DBT-DMAE's substructures.

From Noise to Latent: Generating Gaussian Latents for INR-Based Image Compression

Chaoyi Lin, Yaojun Wu, Yue Li et al.

Recent implicit neural representation (INR)-based image compression methods have shown competitive performance by overfitting image-specific latent codes. However, they remain inferior to end-to-end (E2E) compression approaches due to the absence of expressive latent representations. On the other hand, E2E methods rely on transmitting latent codes and requiring complex entropy models, leading to increased decoding complexity. Inspired by the normalization strategy in E2E codecs where latents are transformed into Gaussian noise to demonstrate the removal of spatial redundancy, we explore the inverse direction: generating latents directly from Gaussian noise. In this paper, we propose a novel image compression paradigm that reconstructs image-specific latents from a multi-scale Gaussian noise tensor, deterministically generated using a shared random seed. A Gaussian Parameter Prediction (GPP) module estimates the distribution parameters, enabling one-shot latent generation via reparameterization trick. The predicted latent is then passed through a synthesis network to reconstruct the image. Our method eliminates the need to transmit latent codes while preserving latent-based benefits, achieving competitive rate-distortion performance on Kodak and CLIC dataset. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to explore Gaussian latent generation for learned image compression.

An Overview of the JPEG AI Learning-Based Image Coding Standard

Semih Esenlik, Yaojun Wu, Zhaobin Zhang et al.

JPEG AI is an emerging learning-based image coding standard developed by Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG). The scope of the JPEG AI is the creation of a practical learning-based image coding standard offering a single-stream, compact compressed domain representation, targeting both human visualization and machine consumption. Scheduled for completion in early 2025, the first version of JPEG AI focuses on human vision tasks, demonstrating significant BD-rate reductions compared to existing standards, in terms of MS-SSIM, FSIM, VIF, VMAF, PSNR-HVS, IW-SSIM and NLPD quality metrics. Designed to ensure broad interoperability, JPEG AI incorporates various design features to support deployment across diverse devices and applications. This paper provides an overview of the technical features and characteristics of the JPEG AI standard.

Sub-sampled Cross-component Prediction for Emerging Video Coding Standards

Junru Li, Meng Wang, Li Zhang et al.

Cross-component linear model (CCLM) prediction has been repeatedly proven to be effective in reducing the inter-channel redundancies in video compression. Essentially speaking, the linear model is identically trained by employing accessible luma and chroma reference samples at both encoder and decoder, elevating the level of operational complexity due to the least square regression or max-min based model parameter derivation. In this paper, we investigate the capability of the linear model in the context of sub-sampled based cross-component correlation mining, as a means of significantly releasing the operation burden and facilitating the hardware and software design for both encoder and decoder. In particular, the sub-sampling ratios and positions are elaborately designed by exploiting the spatial correlation and the inter-channel correlation. Extensive experiments verify that the proposed method is characterized by its simplicity in operation and robustness in terms of rate-distortion performance, leading to the adoption by Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard and the third generation of Audio Video Coding Standard (AVS3).
