MANIQA: Multi-dimension Attention Network for No-Reference Image Quality Assessment

Sidi Yang, Tianhe Wu, Shuwei Shi et al.

No-Reference Image Quality Assessment (NR-IQA) aims to assess the perceptual quality of images in accordance with human subjective perception. Unfortunately, existing NR-IQA methods are far from meeting the needs of predicting accurate quality scores on GAN-based distortion images. To this end, we propose Multi-dimension Attention Network for no-reference Image Quality Assessment (MANIQA) to improve the performance on GAN-based distortion. We firstly extract features via ViT, then to strengthen global and local interactions, we propose the Transposed Attention Block (TAB) and the Scale Swin Transformer Block (SSTB). These two modules apply attention mechanisms across the channel and spatial dimension, respectively. In this multi-dimensional manner, the modules cooperatively increase the interaction among different regions of images globally and locally. Finally, a dual branch structure for patch-weighted quality prediction is applied to predict the final score depending on the weight of each patch's score. Experimental results demonstrate that MANIQA outperforms state-of-the-art methods on four standard datasets (LIVE, TID2013, CSIQ, and KADID-10K) by a large margin. Besides, our method ranked first place in the final testing phase of the NTIRE 2022 Perceptual Image Quality Assessment Challenge Track 2: No-Reference. Codes and models are available at https://github.com/IIGROUP/MANIQA.

Global Spectral Filter Memory Network for Video Object Segmentation

Yong Liu, Ran Yu, Jiahao Wang et al.

This paper studies semi-supervised video object segmentation through boosting intra-frame interaction. Recent memory network-based methods focus on exploiting inter-frame temporal reference while paying little attention to intra-frame spatial dependency. Specifically, these segmentation model tends to be susceptible to interference from unrelated nontarget objects in a certain frame. To this end, we propose Global Spectral Filter Memory network (GSFM), which improves intra-frame interaction through learning long-term spatial dependencies in the spectral domain. The key components of GSFM is 2D (inverse) discrete Fourier transform for spatial information mixing. Besides, we empirically find low frequency feature should be enhanced in encoder (backbone) while high frequency for decoder (segmentation head). We attribute this to semantic information extracting role for encoder and fine-grained details highlighting role for decoder. Thus, Low (High) Frequency Module is proposed to fit this circumstance. Extensive experiments on the popular DAVIS and YouTube-VOS benchmarks demonstrate that GSFM noticeably outperforms the baseline method and achieves state-of-the-art performance. Besides, extensive analysis shows that the proposed modules are reasonable and of great generalization ability. Our source code is available at https://github.com/workforai/GSFM.

Animal3D: A Comprehensive Dataset of 3D Animal Pose and Shape

Jiacong Xu, Yi Zhang, Jiawei Peng et al.

Accurately estimating the 3D pose and shape is an essential step towards understanding animal behavior, and can potentially benefit many downstream applications, such as wildlife conservation. However, research in this area is held back by the lack of a comprehensive and diverse dataset with high-quality 3D pose and shape annotations. In this paper, we propose Animal3D, the first comprehensive dataset for mammal animal 3D pose and shape estimation. Animal3D consists of 3379 images collected from 40 mammal species, high-quality annotations of 26 keypoints, and importantly the pose and shape parameters of the SMAL model. All annotations were labeled and checked manually in a multi-stage process to ensure highest quality results. Based on the Animal3D dataset, we benchmark representative shape and pose estimation models at: (1) supervised learning from only the Animal3D data, (2) synthetic to real transfer from synthetically generated images, and (3) fine-tuning human pose and shape estimation models. Our experimental results demonstrate that predicting the 3D shape and pose of animals across species remains a very challenging task, despite significant advances in human pose estimation. Our results further demonstrate that synthetic pre-training is a viable strategy to boost the model performance. Overall, Animal3D opens new directions for facilitating future research in animal 3D pose and shape estimation, and is publicly available.

Uncertainty Guided Policy for Active Robotic 3D Reconstruction using Neural Radiance Fields

Soomin Lee, Le Chen, Jiahao Wang et al.

In this paper, we tackle the problem of active robotic 3D reconstruction of an object. In particular, we study how a mobile robot with an arm-held camera can select a favorable number of views to recover an object's 3D shape efficiently. Contrary to the existing solution to this problem, we leverage the popular neural radiance fields-based object representation, which has recently shown impressive results for various computer vision tasks. However, it is not straightforward to directly reason about an object's explicit 3D geometric details using such a representation, making the next-best-view selection problem for dense 3D reconstruction challenging. This paper introduces a ray-based volumetric uncertainty estimator, which computes the entropy of the weight distribution of the color samples along each ray of the object's implicit neural representation. We show that it is possible to infer the uncertainty of the underlying 3D geometry given a novel view with the proposed estimator. We then present a next-best-view selection policy guided by the ray-based volumetric uncertainty in neural radiance fields-based representations. Encouraging experimental results on synthetic and real-world data suggest that the approach presented in this paper can enable a new research direction of using an implicit 3D object representation for the next-best-view problem in robot vision applications, distinguishing our approach from the existing approaches that rely on explicit 3D geometric modeling.

Attentions Help CNNs See Better: Attention-based Hybrid Image Quality Assessment Network

Shanshan Lao, Yuan Gong, Shuwei Shi et al.

Image quality assessment (IQA) algorithm aims to quantify the human perception of image quality. Unfortunately, there is a performance drop when assessing the distortion images generated by generative adversarial network (GAN) with seemingly realistic texture. In this work, we conjecture that this maladaptation lies in the backbone of IQA models, where patch-level prediction methods use independent image patches as input to calculate their scores separately, but lack spatial relationship modeling among image patches. Therefore, we propose an Attention-based Hybrid Image Quality Assessment Network (AHIQ) to deal with the challenge and get better performance on the GAN-based IQA task. Firstly, we adopt a two-branch architecture, including a vision transformer (ViT) branch and a convolutional neural network (CNN) branch for feature extraction. The hybrid architecture combines interaction information among image patches captured by ViT and local texture details from CNN. To make the features from shallow CNN more focused on the visually salient region, a deformable convolution is applied with the help of semantic information from the ViT branch. Finally, we use a patch-wise score prediction module to obtain the final score. The experiments show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on four standard IQA datasets and AHIQ ranked first on the Full Reference (FR) track of the NTIRE 2022 Perceptual Image Quality Assessment Challenge.

Learning Adaptive Warping for Real-World Rolling Shutter Correction

Mingdeng Cao, Zhihang Zhong, Jiahao Wang et al.

This paper proposes the first real-world rolling shutter (RS) correction dataset, BS-RSC, and a corresponding model to correct the RS frames in a distorted video. Mobile devices in the consumer market with CMOS-based sensors for video capture often result in rolling shutter effects when relative movements occur during the video acquisition process, calling for RS effect removal techniques. However, current state-of-the-art RS correction methods often fail to remove RS effects in real scenarios since the motions are various and hard to model. To address this issue, we propose a real-world RS correction dataset BS-RSC. Real distorted videos with corresponding ground truth are recorded simultaneously via a well-designed beam-splitter-based acquisition system. BS-RSC contains various motions of both camera and objects in dynamic scenes. Further, an RS correction model with adaptive warping is proposed. Our model can warp the learned RS features into global shutter counterparts adaptively with predicted multiple displacement fields. These warped features are aggregated and then reconstructed into high-quality global shutter frames in a coarse-to-fine strategy. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and our dataset can improve the model's ability to remove the RS effects in the real world.

Power-LLaVA: Large Language and Vision Assistant for Power Transmission Line Inspection

Jiahao Wang, Mingxuan Li, Haichen Luo et al.

The inspection of power transmission line has achieved notable achievements in the past few years, primarily due to the integration of deep learning technology. However, current inspection approaches continue to encounter difficulties in generalization and intelligence, which restricts their further applicability. In this paper, we introduce Power-LLaVA, the first large language and vision assistant designed to offer professional and reliable inspection services for power transmission line by engaging in dialogues with humans. Moreover, we also construct a large-scale and high-quality dataset specialized for the inspection task. By employing a two-stage training strategy on the constructed dataset, Power-LLaVA demonstrates exceptional performance at a comparatively low training cost. Extensive experiments further prove the great capabilities of Power-LLaVA within the realm of power transmission line inspection. Code shall be released.

Towards Real-World Video Deblurring by Exploring Blur Formation Process

Mingdeng Cao, Zhihang Zhong, Yanbo Fan et al.

This paper aims at exploring how to synthesize close-to-real blurs that existing video deblurring models trained on them can generalize well to real-world blurry videos. In recent years, deep learning-based approaches have achieved promising success on video deblurring task. However, the models trained on existing synthetic datasets still suffer from generalization problems over real-world blurry scenarios with undesired artifacts. The factors accounting for the failure remain unknown. Therefore, we revisit the classical blur synthesis pipeline and figure out the possible reasons, including shooting parameters, blur formation space, and image signal processor~(ISP). To analyze the effects of these potential factors, we first collect an ultra-high frame-rate (940 FPS) RAW video dataset as the data basis to synthesize various kinds of blurs. Then we propose a novel realistic blur synthesis pipeline termed as RAW-Blur by leveraging blur formation cues. Through numerous experiments, we demonstrate that synthesizing blurs in the RAW space and adopting the same ISP as the real-world testing data can effectively eliminate the negative effects of synthetic data. Furthermore, the shooting parameters of the synthesized blurry video, e.g., exposure time and frame-rate play significant roles in improving the performance of deblurring models. Impressively, the models trained on the blurry data synthesized by the proposed RAW-Blur pipeline can obtain more than 5dB PSNR gain against those trained on the existing synthetic blur datasets. We believe the novel realistic synthesis pipeline and the corresponding RAW video dataset can help the community to easily construct customized blur datasets to improve real-world video deblurring performance largely, instead of laboriously collecting real data pairs.

Mamba-R: Vision Mamba ALSO Needs Registers

Feng Wang, Jiahao Wang, Sucheng Ren et al.

Similar to Vision Transformers, this paper identifies artifacts also present within the feature maps of Vision Mamba. These artifacts, corresponding to high-norm tokens emerging in low-information background areas of images, appear much more severe in Vision Mamba -- they exist prevalently even with the tiny-sized model and activate extensively across background regions. To mitigate this issue, we follow the prior solution of introducing register tokens into Vision Mamba. To better cope with Mamba blocks' uni-directional inference paradigm, two key modifications are introduced: 1) evenly inserting registers throughout the input token sequence, and 2) recycling registers for final decision predictions. We term this new architecture Mamba-R. Qualitative observations suggest, compared to vanilla Vision Mamba, Mamba-R's feature maps appear cleaner and more focused on semantically meaningful regions. Quantitatively, Mamba-R attains stronger performance and scales better. For example, on the ImageNet benchmark, our base-size Mamba-R attains 83.0% accuracy, significantly outperforming Vim-B's 81.8%; furthermore, we provide the first successful scaling to the large model size (i.e., with 341M parameters), attaining a competitive accuracy of 83.6% (84.5% if finetuned with 384x384 inputs). Additional validation on the downstream semantic segmentation task also supports Mamba-R's efficacy. Code is available at https://github.com/wangf3014/Mamba-Reg.

SpotActor: Training-Free Layout-Controlled Consistent Image Generation

Jiahao Wang, Caixia Yan, Weizhan Zhang et al.

Text-to-image diffusion models significantly enhance the efficiency of artistic creation with high-fidelity image generation. However, in typical application scenarios like comic book production, they can neither place each subject into its expected spot nor maintain the consistent appearance of each subject across images. For these issues, we pioneer a novel task, Layout-to-Consistent-Image (L2CI) generation, which produces consistent and compositional images in accordance with the given layout conditions and text prompts. To accomplish this challenging task, we present a new formalization of dual energy guidance with optimization in a dual semantic-latent space and thus propose a training-free pipeline, SpotActor, which features a layout-conditioned backward update stage and a consistent forward sampling stage. In the backward stage, we innovate a nuanced layout energy function to mimic the attention activations with a sigmoid-like objective. While in the forward stage, we design Regional Interconnection Self-Attention (RISA) and Semantic Fusion Cross-Attention (SFCA) mechanisms that allow mutual interactions across images. To evaluate the performance, we present ActorBench, a specified benchmark with hundreds of reasonable prompt-box pairs stemming from object detection datasets. Comprehensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. The results prove that SpotActor fulfills the expectations of this task and showcases the potential for practical applications with superior layout alignment, subject consistency, prompt conformity and background diversity.

Region-Adaptive Deformable Network for Image Quality Assessment

Shuwei Shi, Qingyan Bai, Mingdeng Cao et al.

Image quality assessment (IQA) aims to assess the perceptual quality of images. The outputs of the IQA algorithms are expected to be consistent with human subjective perception. In image restoration and enhancement tasks, images generated by generative adversarial networks (GAN) can achieve better visual performance than traditional CNN-generated images, although they have spatial shift and texture noise. Unfortunately, the existing IQA methods have unsatisfactory performance on the GAN-based distortion partially because of their low tolerance to spatial misalignment. To this end, we propose the reference-oriented deformable convolution, which can improve the performance of an IQA network on GAN-based distortion by adaptively considering this misalignment. We further propose a patch-level attention module to enhance the interaction among different patch regions, which are processed independently in previous patch-based methods. The modified residual block is also proposed by applying modifications to the classic residual block to construct a patch-region-based baseline called WResNet. Equipping this baseline with the two proposed modules, we further propose Region-Adaptive Deformable Network (RADN). The experiment results on the NTIRE 2021 Perceptual Image Quality Assessment Challenge dataset show the superior performance of RADN, and the ensemble approach won fourth place in the final testing phase of the challenge. Code is available at https://github.com/IIGROUP/RADN.

Any2Caption:Interpreting Any Condition to Caption for Controllable Video Generation

Shengqiong Wu, Weicai Ye, Jiahao Wang et al.

To address the bottleneck of accurate user intent interpretation within the current video generation community, we present Any2Caption, a novel framework for controllable video generation under any condition. The key idea is to decouple various condition interpretation steps from the video synthesis step. By leveraging modern multimodal large language models (MLLMs), Any2Caption interprets diverse inputs--text, images, videos, and specialized cues such as region, motion, and camera poses--into dense, structured captions that offer backbone video generators with better guidance. We also introduce Any2CapIns, a large-scale dataset with 337K instances and 407K conditions for any-condition-to-caption instruction tuning. Comprehensive evaluations demonstrate significant improvements of our system in controllability and video quality across various aspects of existing video generation models. SAGA: Stochastic Whole-Body Grasping with Contact

Yan Wu, Jiahao Wang, Yan Zhang et al.

The synthesis of human grasping has numerous applications including AR/VR, video games and robotics. While methods have been proposed to generate realistic hand-object interaction for object grasping and manipulation, these typically only consider interacting hand alone. Our goal is to synthesize whole-body grasping motions. Starting from an arbitrary initial pose, we aim to generate diverse and natural whole-body human motions to approach and grasp a target object in 3D space. This task is challenging as it requires modeling both whole-body dynamics and dexterous finger movements. To this end, we propose SAGA (StochAstic whole-body Grasping with contAct), a framework which consists of two key components: (a) Static whole-body grasping pose generation. Specifically, we propose a multi-task generative model, to jointly learn static whole-body grasping poses and human-object contacts. (b) Grasping motion infilling. Given an initial pose and the generated whole-body grasping pose as the start and end of the motion respectively, we design a novel contact-aware generative motion infilling module to generate a diverse set of grasp-oriented motions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, which is a novel generative framework to synthesize realistic and expressive whole-body motions that approach and grasp randomly placed unseen objects. Code and models are available at https://jiahaoplus.github.io/SAGA/saga.html.

NTIRE 2021 Challenge on Perceptual Image Quality Assessment

Jinjin Gu, Haoming Cai, Chao Dong et al.

This paper reports on the NTIRE 2021 challenge on perceptual image quality assessment (IQA), held in conjunction with the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement workshop (NTIRE) workshop at CVPR 2021. As a new type of image processing technology, perceptual image processing algorithms based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) have produced images with more realistic textures. These output images have completely different characteristics from traditional distortions, thus pose a new challenge for IQA methods to evaluate their visual quality. In comparison with previous IQA challenges, the training and testing datasets in this challenge include the outputs of perceptual image processing algorithms and the corresponding subjective scores. Thus they can be used to develop and evaluate IQA methods on GAN-based distortions. The challenge has 270 registered participants in total. In the final testing stage, 13 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets. Almost all of them have achieved much better results than existing IQA methods, while the winning method can demonstrate state-of-the-art performance.

Coarse-to-Fine Searching for Efficient Generative Adversarial Networks

Jiahao Wang, Han Shu, Weihao Xia et al.

This paper studies the neural architecture search (NAS) problem for developing efficient generator networks. Compared with deep models for visual recognition tasks, generative adversarial network (GAN) are usually designed to conduct various complex image generation. We first discover an intact search space of generator networks including three dimensionalities, i.e., path, operator, channel for fully excavating the network performance. To reduce the huge search cost, we explore a coarse-to-fine search strategy which divides the overall search process into three sub-optimization problems accordingly. In addition, a fair supernet training approach is utilized to ensure that all sub-networks can be updated fairly and stably. Experiments results on benchmarks show that we can provide generator networks with better image quality and lower computational costs over the state-of-the-art methods. For example, with our method, it takes only about 8 GPU hours on the entire edges-to-shoes dataset to get a 2.56 MB model with a 24.13 FID score and 10 GPU hours on the entire Urban100 dataset to get a 1.49 MB model with a 24.94 PSNR score.
