Skinned Motion Retargeting with Residual Perception of Motion Semantics & Geometry

Jiaxu Zhang, Junwu Weng, Di Kang et al.

A good motion retargeting cannot be reached without reasonable consideration of source-target differences on both the skeleton and shape geometry levels. In this work, we propose a novel Residual RETargeting network (R2ET) structure, which relies on two neural modification modules, to adjust the source motions to fit the target skeletons and shapes progressively. In particular, a skeleton-aware module is introduced to preserve the source motion semantics. A shape-aware module is designed to perceive the geometries of target characters to reduce interpenetration and contact-missing. Driven by our explored distance-based losses that explicitly model the motion semantics and geometry, these two modules can learn residual motion modifications on the source motion to generate plausible retargeted motion in a single inference without post-processing. To balance these two modifications, we further present a balancing gate to conduct linear interpolation between them. Extensive experiments on the public dataset Mixamo demonstrate that our R2ET achieves the state-of-the-art performance, and provides a good balance between the preservation of motion semantics as well as the attenuation of interpenetration and contact-missing. Code is available at https://github.com/Kebii/R2ET.

HMC: Hierarchical Mesh Coarsening for Skeleton-free Motion Retargeting

Haoyu Wang, Shaoli Huang, Fang Zhao et al.

We present a simple yet effective method for skeleton-free motion retargeting. Previous methods transfer motion between high-resolution meshes, failing to preserve the inherent local-part motions in the mesh. Addressing this issue, our proposed method learns the correspondence in a coarse-to-fine fashion by integrating the retargeting process with a mesh-coarsening pipeline. First, we propose a mesh-coarsening module that coarsens the mesh representations for better motion transfer. This module improves the ability to handle small-part motion and preserves the local motion interdependence between neighboring mesh vertices. Furthermore, we leverage a hierarchical refinement procedure to complement missing mesh details by gradually improving the low-resolution mesh output with a higher-resolution one. We evaluate our method on several well-known 3D character datasets, and it yields an average improvement of 25% on point-wise mesh euclidean distance (PMD) against the start-of-art method. Moreover, our qualitative results show that our method is significantly helpful in preserving the moving consistency of different body parts on the target character due to disentangling body-part structures and mesh details in a hierarchical way.

Learning Anchor Transformations for 3D Garment Animation

Fang Zhao, Zekun Li, Shaoli Huang et al.

This paper proposes an anchor-based deformation model, namely AnchorDEF, to predict 3D garment animation from a body motion sequence. It deforms a garment mesh template by a mixture of rigid transformations with extra nonlinear displacements. A set of anchors around the mesh surface is introduced to guide the learning of rigid transformation matrices. Once the anchor transformations are found, per-vertex nonlinear displacements of the garment template can be regressed in a canonical space, which reduces the complexity of deformation space learning. By explicitly constraining the transformed anchors to satisfy the consistencies of position, normal and direction, the physical meaning of learned anchor transformations in space is guaranteed for better generalization. Furthermore, an adaptive anchor updating is proposed to optimize the anchor position by being aware of local mesh topology for learning representative anchor transformations. Qualitative and quantitative experiments on different types of garments demonstrate that AnchorDEF achieves the state-of-the-art performance on 3D garment deformation prediction in motion, especially for loose-fitting garments.

CSS: Overcoming Pose and Scene Challenges in Crowd-Sourced 3D Gaussian Splatting

Runze Chen, Mingyu Xiao, Haiyong Luo et al.

We introduce Crowd-Sourced Splatting (CSS), a novel 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) pipeline designed to overcome the challenges of pose-free scene reconstruction using crowd-sourced imagery. The dream of reconstructing historically significant but inaccessible scenes from collections of photographs has long captivated researchers. However, traditional 3D techniques struggle with missing camera poses, limited viewpoints, and inconsistent lighting. CSS addresses these challenges through robust geometric priors and advanced illumination modeling, enabling high-quality novel view synthesis under complex, real-world conditions. Our method demonstrates clear improvements over existing approaches, paving the way for more accurate and flexible applications in AR, VR, and large-scale 3D reconstruction.

Lvio-Fusion: A Self-adaptive Multi-sensor Fusion SLAM Framework Using Actor-critic Method

Yupeng Jia, Haiyong Luo, Fang Zhao et al.

State estimation with sensors is essential for mobile robots. Due to different performance of sensors in different environments, how to fuse measurements of various sensors is a problem. In this paper, we propose a tightly coupled multi-sensor fusion framework, Lvio-Fusion, which fuses stereo camera, Lidar, IMU, and GPS based on the graph optimization. Especially for urban traffic scenes, we introduce a segmented global pose graph optimization with GPS and loop-closure, which can eliminate accumulated drifts. Additionally, we creatively use a actor-critic method in reinforcement learning to adaptively adjust sensors' weight. After training, actor-critic agent can provide the system better and dynamic sensors' weight. We evaluate the performance of our system on public datasets and compare it with other state-of-the-art methods, which shows that the proposed method achieves high estimation accuracy and robustness to various environments. And our implementations are open source and highly scalable.

Fine-Grained Trajectory-based Travel Time Estimation for Multi-city Scenarios Based on Deep Meta-Learning

Chenxing Wang, Fang Zhao, Haichao Zhang et al.

Travel Time Estimation (TTE) is indispensable in intelligent transportation system (ITS). It is significant to achieve the fine-grained Trajectory-based Travel Time Estimation (TTTE) for multi-city scenarios, namely to accurately estimate travel time of the given trajectory for multiple city scenarios. However, it faces great challenges due to complex factors including dynamic temporal dependencies and fine-grained spatial dependencies. To tackle these challenges, we propose a meta learning based framework, MetaTTE, to continuously provide accurate travel time estimation over time by leveraging well-designed deep neural network model called DED, which consists of Data preprocessing module and Encoder-Decoder network module. By introducing meta learning techniques, the generalization ability of MetaTTE is enhanced using small amount of examples, which opens up new opportunities to increase the potential of achieving consistent performance on TTTE when traffic conditions and road networks change over time in the future. The DED model adopts an encoder-decoder network to capture fine-grained spatial and temporal representations. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets are conducted to confirm that our MetaTTE outperforms six state-of-art baselines, and improve 29.35% and 25.93% accuracy than the best baseline on Chengdu and Porto datasets, respectively.

Spatio-Temporal meets Wavelet: Disentangled Traffic Flow Forecasting via Efficient Spectral Graph Attention Network

Yuchen Fang, Yanjun Qin, Haiyong Luo et al.

Traffic forecasting is crucial for public safety and resource optimization, yet is very challenging due to three aspects: i) current existing works mostly exploit intricate temporal patterns (e.g., the short-term thunderstorm and long-term daily trends) within a single method, which fail to accurately capture spatio-temporal dependencies under different schemas; ii) the under-exploration of the graph positional encoding limit the extraction of spatial information in the commonly used full graph attention network; iii) the quadratic complexity of the full graph attention introduces heavy computational needs. To achieve the effective traffic flow forecasting, we propose an efficient spectral graph attention network with disentangled traffic sequences. Specifically, the discrete wavelet transform is leveraged to obtain the low- and high-frequency components of traffic sequences, and a dual-channel encoder is elaborately designed to accurately capture the spatio-temporal dependencies under long- and short-term schemas of the low- and high-frequency components. Moreover, a novel wavelet-based graph positional encoding and a query sampling strategy are introduced in our spectral graph attention to effectively guide message passing and efficiently calculate the attention. Extensive experiments on four real-world datasets show the superiority of our model, i.e., the higher traffic forecasting precision with lower computational cost.

Learning Anchored Unsigned Distance Functions with Gradient Direction Alignment for Single-view Garment Reconstruction

Fang Zhao, Wenhao Wang, Shengcai Liao et al.

While single-view 3D reconstruction has made significant progress benefiting from deep shape representations in recent years, garment reconstruction is still not solved well due to open surfaces, diverse topologies and complex geometric details. In this paper, we propose a novel learnable Anchored Unsigned Distance Function (AnchorUDF) representation for 3D garment reconstruction from a single image. AnchorUDF represents 3D shapes by predicting unsigned distance fields (UDFs) to enable open garment surface modeling at arbitrary resolution. To capture diverse garment topologies, AnchorUDF not only computes pixel-aligned local image features of query points, but also leverages a set of anchor points located around the surface to enrich 3D position features for query points, which provides stronger 3D space context for the distance function. Furthermore, in order to obtain more accurate point projection direction at inference, we explicitly align the spatial gradient direction of AnchorUDF with the ground-truth direction to the surface during training. Extensive experiments on two public 3D garment datasets, i.e., MGN and Deep Fashion3D, demonstrate that AnchorUDF achieves the state-of-the-art performance on single-view garment reconstruction.

A Light-weight Deep Human Activity Recognition Algorithm Using Multi-knowledge Distillation

Runze Chen, Haiyong Luo, Fang Zhao et al.

Inertial sensor-based human activity recognition (HAR) is the base of many human-centered mobile applications. Deep learning-based fine-grained HAR models enable accurate classification in various complex application scenarios. Nevertheless, the large storage and computational overhead of the existing fine-grained deep HAR models hinder their widespread deployment on resource-limited platforms. Inspired by the knowledge distillation's reasonable model compression and potential performance improvement capability, we design a multi-level HAR modeling pipeline called Stage-Logits-Memory Distillation (SMLDist) based on the widely-used MobileNet. By paying more attention to the frequency-related features during the distillation process, the SMLDist improves the HAR classification robustness of the students. We also propose an auto-search mechanism in the heterogeneous classifiers to improve classification performance. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that SMLDist outperforms various state-of-the-art HAR frameworks in accuracy and F1 macro score. The practical evaluation of the Jetson Xavier AGX platform shows that the SMLDist model is both energy-efficient and computation-efficient. These experiments validate the reasonable balance between the robustness and efficiency of the proposed model. The comparative experiments of knowledge distillation on six public datasets also demonstrate that the SMLDist outperforms other advanced knowledge distillation methods of students' performance, which verifies the good generalization of the SMLDist on other classification tasks, including but not limited to HAR.

Beyond Monocular Deraining: Parallel Stereo Deraining Network Via Semantic Prior

Kaihao Zhang, Wenhan Luo, Yanjiang Yu et al.

Rain is a common natural phenomenon. Taking images in the rain however often results in degraded quality of images, thus compromises the performance of many computer vision systems. Most existing de-rain algorithms use only one single input image and aim to recover a clean image. Few work has exploited stereo images. Moreover, even for single image based monocular deraining, many current methods fail to complete the task satisfactorily because they mostly rely on per pixel loss functions and ignore semantic information. In this paper, we present a Paired Rain Removal Network (PRRNet), which exploits both stereo images and semantic information. Specifically, we develop a Semantic-Aware Deraining Module (SADM) which solves both tasks of semantic segmentation and deraining of scenes, and a Semantic-Fusion Network (SFNet) and a View-Fusion Network (VFNet) which fuse semantic information and multi-view information respectively. In addition, we also introduce an Enhanced Paired Rain Removal Network (EPRRNet) which exploits semantic prior to remove rain streaks from stereo images. We first use a coarse deraining network to reduce the rain streaks on the input images, and then adopt a pre-trained semantic segmentation network to extract semantic features from the coarse derained image. Finally, a parallel stereo deraining network fuses semantic and multi-view information to restore finer results. We also propose new stereo based rainy datasets for benchmarking. Experiments on both monocular and the newly proposed stereo rainy datasets demonstrate that the proposed method achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

A GPS Pseudorange Based Cooperative Vehicular Distance Measurement Technique

Daiqin Yang, Fang Zhao, Kai Liu et al.

Accurate vehicular localization is important for various cooperative vehicle safety (CVS) applications such as collision avoidance, turning assistant, etc. In this paper, we propose a cooperative vehicular distance measurement technique based on the sharing of GPS pseudorange measurements and a weighted least squares method. The classic double difference pseudorange solution, which was originally designed for high-end survey level GPS systems, is adapted to low-end navigation level GPS receivers for its wide availability in ground vehicles. The Carrier to Noise Ratio (CNR) of raw pseudorange measurements are taken into account for noise mitigation. We present a Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) based mechanism to implement the exchange of pseudorange information among neighboring vehicles. As demonstrated in field tests, our proposed technique increases the accuracy of the distance measurement significantly compared with the distance obtained from the GPS fixes.
