ShortCircuit: AlphaZero-Driven Circuit Design

Dimitrios Tsaras, Antoine Grosnit, Lei Chen et al.

Chip design relies heavily on generating Boolean circuits, such as AND-Inverter Graphs (AIGs), from functional descriptions like truth tables. This generation operation is a key process in logic synthesis, a primary chip design stage. While recent advances in deep learning have aimed to accelerate circuit design, these efforts have mostly focused on tasks other than synthesis, and traditional heuristic methods have plateaued. In this paper, we introduce ShortCircuit, a novel transformer-based architecture that leverages the structural properties of AIGs and performs efficient space exploration. Contrary to prior approaches attempting end-to-end generation of logic circuits using deep networks, ShortCircuit employs a two-phase process combining supervised with reinforcement learning to enhance generalization to unseen truth tables. We also propose an AlphaZero variant to handle the double exponentially large state space and the reward sparsity, enabling the discovery of near-optimal designs. To evaluate the generative performance of our model , we extract 500 truth tables from a set of 20 real-world circuits. ShortCircuit successfully generates AIGs for $98\%$ of the 8-input test truth tables, and outperforms the state-of-the-art logic synthesis tool, ABC, by $18.62\%$ in terms of circuits size.

Narrative Action Evaluation with Prompt-Guided Multimodal Interaction

Shiyi Zhang, Sule Bai, Guangyi Chen et al.

In this paper, we investigate a new problem called narrative action evaluation (NAE). NAE aims to generate professional commentary that evaluates the execution of an action. Unlike traditional tasks such as score-based action quality assessment and video captioning involving superficial sentences, NAE focuses on creating detailed narratives in natural language. These narratives provide intricate descriptions of actions along with objective evaluations. NAE is a more challenging task because it requires both narrative flexibility and evaluation rigor. One existing possible solution is to use multi-task learning, where narrative language and evaluative information are predicted separately. However, this approach results in reduced performance for individual tasks because of variations between tasks and differences in modality between language information and evaluation information. To address this, we propose a prompt-guided multimodal interaction framework. This framework utilizes a pair of transformers to facilitate the interaction between different modalities of information. It also uses prompts to transform the score regression task into a video-text matching task, thus enabling task interactivity. To support further research in this field, we re-annotate the MTL-AQA and FineGym datasets with high-quality and comprehensive action narration. Additionally, we establish benchmarks for NAE. Extensive experiment results prove that our method outperforms separate learning methods and naive multi-task learning methods. Data and code are released at https://github.com/shiyi-zh0408/NAE_CVPR2024.

RakutenAI-7B: Extending Large Language Models for Japanese

Rakuten Group, Aaron Levine, Connie Huang et al.

We introduce RakutenAI-7B, a suite of Japanese-oriented large language models that achieve the best performance on the Japanese LM Harness benchmarks among the open 7B models. Along with the foundation model, we release instruction- and chat-tuned models, RakutenAI-7B-instruct and RakutenAI-7B-chat respectively, under the Apache 2.0 license.

An AI-enabled Agent-Based Model and Its Application in Measles Outbreak Simulation for New Zealand

Sijin Zhang, Alvaro Orsi, Lei Chen

Agent Based Models (ABMs) have emerged as a powerful tool for investigating complex social interactions, particularly in the context of public health and infectious disease investigation. In an effort to enhance the conventional ABM, enabling automated model calibration and reducing the computational resources needed for scaling up the model, we have developed a tensorized and differentiable agent-based model by coupling Graph Neural Network (GNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network. The model was employed to investigate the 2019 measles outbreak occurred in New Zealand, demonstrating a promising ability to accurately simulate the outbreak dynamics, particularly during the peak period of repeated cases. This paper shows that by leveraging the latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and the capabilities of traditional ABMs, we gain deeper insights into the dynamics of infectious disease outbreaks. This, in turn, helps us make more informed decision when developing effective strategies that strike a balance between managing outbreaks and minimizing disruptions to everyday life.

Application of Deep Learning on Predicting Prognosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia with Cytogenetics, Age, and Mutations

Mei Lin, Vanya Jaitly, Iris Wang et al.

We explore how Deep Learning (DL) can be utilized to predict prognosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Out of TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) database, 94 AML cases are used in this study. Input data include age, 10 common cytogenetic and 23 most common mutation results; output is the prognosis (diagnosis to death, DTD). In our DL network, autoencoders are stacked to form a hierarchical DL model from which raw data are compressed and organized and high-level features are extracted. The network is written in R language and is designed to predict prognosis of AML for a given case (DTD of more than or less than 730 days). The DL network achieves an excellent accuracy of 83% in predicting prognosis. As a proof-of-concept study, our preliminary results demonstrate a practical application of DL in future practice of prognostic prediction using next-gen sequencing (NGS) data.
