BEVHeight: A Robust Framework for Vision-based Roadside 3D Object Detection

Lei Yang, Kaicheng Yu, Tao Tang et al.

While most recent autonomous driving system focuses on developing perception methods on ego-vehicle sensors, people tend to overlook an alternative approach to leverage intelligent roadside cameras to extend the perception ability beyond the visual range. We discover that the state-of-the-art vision-centric bird's eye view detection methods have inferior performances on roadside cameras. This is because these methods mainly focus on recovering the depth regarding the camera center, where the depth difference between the car and the ground quickly shrinks while the distance increases. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective approach, dubbed BEVHeight, to address this issue. In essence, instead of predicting the pixel-wise depth, we regress the height to the ground to achieve a distance-agnostic formulation to ease the optimization process of camera-only perception methods. On popular 3D detection benchmarks of roadside cameras, our method surpasses all previous vision-centric methods by a significant margin. The code is available at {\url{https://github.com/ADLab-AutoDrive/BEVHeight}}.

Deep Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo via Inter-Intra Image Feature Fusion

Fangzhou Gao, Meng Wang, Lianghao Zhang et al.

Uncalibrated photometric stereo is proposed to estimate the detailed surface normal from images under varying and unknown lightings. Recently, deep learning brings powerful data priors to this underdetermined problem. This paper presents a new method for deep uncalibrated photometric stereo, which efficiently utilizes the inter-image representation to guide the normal estimation. Previous methods use optimization-based neural inverse rendering or a single size-independent pooling layer to deal with multiple inputs, which are inefficient for utilizing information among input images. Given multi-images under different lighting, we consider the intra-image and inter-image variations highly correlated. Motivated by the correlated variations, we designed an inter-intra image feature fusion module to introduce the inter-image representation into the per-image feature extraction. The extra representation is used to guide the per-image feature extraction and eliminate the ambiguity in normal estimation. We demonstrate the effect of our design on a wide range of samples, especially on dark materials. Our method produces significantly better results than the state-of-the-art methods on both synthetic and real data.

Computer Stereo Vision for Autonomous Driving

Rui Fan, Li Wang, Mohammud Junaid Bocus et al.

As an important component of autonomous systems, autonomous car perception has had a big leap with recent advances in parallel computing architectures. With the use of tiny but full-feature embedded supercomputers, computer stereo vision has been prevalently applied in autonomous cars for depth perception. The two key aspects of computer stereo vision are speed and accuracy. They are both desirable but conflicting properties, as the algorithms with better disparity accuracy usually have higher computational complexity. Therefore, the main aim of developing a computer stereo vision algorithm for resource-limited hardware is to improve the trade-off between speed and accuracy. In this chapter, we introduce both the hardware and software aspects of computer stereo vision for autonomous car systems. Then, we discuss four autonomous car perception tasks, including 1) visual feature detection, description and matching, 2) 3D information acquisition, 3) object detection/recognition and 4) semantic image segmentation. The principles of computer stereo vision and parallel computing on multi-threading CPU and GPU architectures are then detailed.

Drosophila-Inspired 3D Moving Object Detection Based on Point Clouds

Li Wang, Dawei Zhao, Tao Wu et al.

3D moving object detection is one of the most critical tasks in dynamic scene analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel Drosophila-inspired 3D moving object detection method using Lidar sensors. According to the theory of elementary motion detector, we have developed a motion detector based on the shallow visual neural pathway of Drosophila. This detector is sensitive to the movement of objects and can well suppress background noise. Designing neural circuits with different connection modes, the approach searches for motion areas in a coarse-to-fine fashion and extracts point clouds of each motion area to form moving object proposals. An improved 3D object detection network is then used to estimate the point clouds of each proposal and efficiently generates the 3D bounding boxes and the object categories. We evaluate the proposed approach on the widely-used KITTI benchmark, and state-of-the-art performance was obtained by using the proposed approach on the task of motion detection.

A practical convolutional neural network as loop filter for intra frame

Xiaodan Song, Jiabao Yao, Lulu Zhou et al.

Loop filters are used in video coding to remove artifacts or improve performance. Recent advances in deploying convolutional neural network (CNN) to replace traditional loop filters show large gains but with problems for practical application. First, different model is used for frames encoded with different quantization parameter (QP), respectively. It is expensive for hardware. Second, float points operation in CNN leads to inconsistency between encoding and decoding across different platforms. Third, redundancy within CNN model consumes precious computational resources. This paper proposes a CNN as the loop filter for intra frames and proposes a scheme to solve the above problems. It aims to design a single CNN model with low redundancy to adapt to decoded frames with different qualities and ensure consistency. To adapt to reconstructions with different qualities, both reconstruction and QP are taken as inputs. After training, the obtained model is compressed to reduce redundancy. To ensure consistency, dynamic fixed points (DFP) are adopted in testing CNN. Parameters in the compressed model are first quantized to DFP and then used for inference of CNN. Outputs of each layer in CNN are computed by DFP operations. Experimental results on JEM 7.0 report 3.14%, 5.21%, 6.28% BD-rate savings for luma and two chroma components with all intra configuration when replacing all traditional filters.
