CasFusionNet: A Cascaded Network for Point Cloud Semantic Scene Completion by Dense Feature Fusion

Jinfeng Xu, Xianzhi Li, Yuan Tang et al.

Semantic scene completion (SSC) aims to complete a partial 3D scene and predict its semantics simultaneously. Most existing works adopt the voxel representations, thus suffering from the growth of memory and computation cost as the voxel resolution increases. Though a few works attempt to solve SSC from the perspective of 3D point clouds, they have not fully exploited the correlation and complementarity between the two tasks of scene completion and semantic segmentation. In our work, we present CasFusionNet, a novel cascaded network for point cloud semantic scene completion by dense feature fusion. Specifically, we design (i) a global completion module (GCM) to produce an upsampled and completed but coarse point set, (ii) a semantic segmentation module (SSM) to predict the per-point semantic labels of the completed points generated by GCM, and (iii) a local refinement module (LRM) to further refine the coarse completed points and the associated labels from a local perspective. We organize the above three modules via dense feature fusion in each level, and cascade a total of four levels, where we also employ feature fusion between each level for sufficient information usage. Both quantitative and qualitative results on our compiled two point-based datasets validate the effectiveness and superiority of our CasFusionNet compared to state-of-the-art methods in terms of both scene completion and semantic segmentation. The codes and datasets are available at: https://github.com/JinfengX/CasFusionNet.

Explore More Guidance: A Task-aware Instruction Network for Sign Language Translation Enhanced with Data Augmentation

Yong Cao, Wei Li, Xianzhi Li et al.

Sign language recognition and translation first uses a recognition module to generate glosses from sign language videos and then employs a translation module to translate glosses into spoken sentences. Most existing works focus on the recognition step, while paying less attention to sign language translation. In this work, we propose a task-aware instruction network, namely TIN-SLT, for sign language translation, by introducing the instruction module and the learning-based feature fuse strategy into a Transformer network. In this way, the pre-trained model's language ability can be well explored and utilized to further boost the translation performance. Moreover, by exploring the representation space of sign language glosses and target spoken language, we propose a multi-level data augmentation scheme to adjust the data distribution of the training set. We conduct extensive experiments on two challenging benchmark datasets, PHOENIX-2014-T and ASLG-PC12, on which our method outperforms former best solutions by 1.65 and 1.42 in terms of BLEU-4. Our code is published at https://github.com/yongcaoplus/TIN-SLT.

Boundary Unlearning

Min Chen, Weizhuo Gao, Gaoyang Liu et al.

The practical needs of the ``right to be forgotten'' and poisoned data removal call for efficient \textit{machine unlearning} techniques, which enable machine learning models to unlearn, or to forget a fraction of training data and its lineage. Recent studies on machine unlearning for deep neural networks (DNNs) attempt to destroy the influence of the forgetting data by scrubbing the model parameters. However, it is prohibitively expensive due to the large dimension of the parameter space. In this paper, we refocus our attention from the parameter space to the decision space of the DNN model, and propose Boundary Unlearning, a rapid yet effective way to unlearn an entire class from a trained DNN model. The key idea is to shift the decision boundary of the original DNN model to imitate the decision behavior of the model retrained from scratch. We develop two novel boundary shift methods, namely Boundary Shrink and Boundary Expanding, both of which can rapidly achieve the utility and privacy guarantees. We extensively evaluate Boundary Unlearning on CIFAR-10 and Vggface2 datasets, and the results show that Boundary Unlearning can effectively forget the forgetting class on image classification and face recognition tasks, with an expected speed-up of $17\times$ and $19\times$, respectively, compared with retraining from the scratch.

Assessing Cross-Cultural Alignment between ChatGPT and Human Societies: An Empirical Study

Yong Cao, Li Zhou, Seolhwa Lee et al.

The recent release of ChatGPT has garnered widespread recognition for its exceptional ability to generate human-like responses in dialogue. Given its usage by users from various nations and its training on a vast multilingual corpus that incorporates diverse cultural and societal norms, it is crucial to evaluate its effectiveness in cultural adaptation. In this paper, we investigate the underlying cultural background of ChatGPT by analyzing its responses to questions designed to quantify human cultural differences. Our findings suggest that, when prompted with American context, ChatGPT exhibits a strong alignment with American culture, but it adapts less effectively to other cultural contexts. Furthermore, by using different prompts to probe the model, we show that English prompts reduce the variance in model responses, flattening out cultural differences and biasing them towards American culture. This study provides valuable insights into the cultural implications of ChatGPT and highlights the necessity of greater diversity and cultural awareness in language technologies.

MiniGPT-3D: Efficiently Aligning 3D Point Clouds with Large Language Models using 2D Priors

Yuan Tang, Xu Han, Xianzhi Li et al.

Large 2D vision-language models (2D-LLMs) have gained significant attention by bridging Large Language Models (LLMs) with images using a simple projector. Inspired by their success, large 3D point cloud-language models (3D-LLMs) also integrate point clouds into LLMs. However, directly aligning point clouds with LLM requires expensive training costs, typically in hundreds of GPU-hours on A100, which hinders the development of 3D-LLMs. In this paper, we introduce MiniGPT-3D, an efficient and powerful 3D-LLM that achieves multiple SOTA results while training for only 27 hours on one RTX 3090. Specifically, we propose to align 3D point clouds with LLMs using 2D priors from 2D-LLMs, which can leverage the similarity between 2D and 3D visual information. We introduce a novel four-stage training strategy for modality alignment in a cascaded way, and a mixture of query experts module to adaptively aggregate features with high efficiency. Moreover, we utilize parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods LoRA and Norm fine-tuning, resulting in only 47.8M learnable parameters, which is up to 260x fewer than existing methods. Extensive experiments show that MiniGPT-3D achieves SOTA on 3D object classification and captioning tasks, with significantly cheaper training costs. Notably, MiniGPT-3D gains an 8.12 increase on GPT-4 evaluation score for the challenging object captioning task compared to ShapeLLM-13B, while the latter costs 160 total GPU-hours on 8 A800. We are the first to explore the efficient 3D-LLM, offering new insights to the community. Code and weights are available at https://github.com/TangYuan96/MiniGPT-3D.

Background Invariance Testing According to Semantic Proximity

Zukang Liao, Min Chen · oxford

In many applications, machine-learned (ML) models are required to hold some invariance qualities, such as rotation, size, and intensity invariance. Among these, testing for background invariance presents a significant challenge due to the vast and complex data space it encompasses. To evaluate invariance qualities, we first use a visualization-based testing framework which allows human analysts to assess and make informed decisions about the invariance properties of ML models. We show that such informative testing framework is preferred as ML models with the same global statistics (e.g., accuracy scores) can behave differently and have different visualized testing patterns. However, such human analysts might not lead to consistent decisions without a systematic sampling approach to select representative testing suites. In this work, we present a technical solution for selecting background scenes according to their semantic proximity to a target image that contains a foreground object being tested. We construct an ontology for storing knowledge about relationships among different objects using association analysis. This ontology enables an efficient and meaningful search for background scenes of different semantic distances to a target image, enabling the selection of a test suite that is both diverse and reasonable. Compared with other testing techniques, e.g., random sampling, nearest neighbors, or other sampled test suites by visual-language models (VLMs), our method achieved a superior balance between diversity and consistency of human annotations, thereby enhancing the reliability and comprehensiveness of background invariance testing.

Fancy123: One Image to High-Quality 3D Mesh Generation via Plug-and-Play Deformation

Qiao Yu, Xianzhi Li, Yuan Tang et al.

Generating 3D meshes from a single image is an important but ill-posed task. Existing methods mainly adopt 2D multiview diffusion models to generate intermediate multiview images, and use the Large Reconstruction Model (LRM) to create the final meshes. However, the multiview images exhibit local inconsistencies, and the meshes often lack fidelity to the input image or look blurry. We propose Fancy123, featuring two enhancement modules and an unprojection operation to address the above three issues, respectively. The appearance enhancement module deforms the 2D multiview images to realign misaligned pixels for better multiview consistency. The fidelity enhancement module deforms the 3D mesh to match the input image. The unprojection of the input image and deformed multiview images onto LRM's generated mesh ensures high clarity, discarding LRM's predicted blurry-looking mesh colors. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments verify Fancy123's SoTA performance with significant improvement. Also, the two enhancement modules are plug-and-play and work at inference time, allowing seamless integration into various existing single-image-to-3D methods. Fully Bayesian Differential Gaussian Processes through Stochastic Differential Equations

Jian Xu, Zhiqi Lin, Min Chen et al.

Deep Gaussian process models typically employ discrete hierarchies, but recent advancements in differential Gaussian processes (DiffGPs) have extended these models to infinite depths. However, existing DiffGP approaches often overlook the uncertainty in kernel hyperparameters by treating them as fixed and time-invariant, which degrades the model's predictive performance and neglects the posterior distribution. In this work, we introduce a fully Bayesian framework that models kernel hyperparameters as random variables and utilizes coupled stochastic differential equations (SDEs) to jointly learn their posterior distributions alongside those of inducing points. By incorporating the estimation uncertainty of hyperparameters, our method significantly enhances model flexibility and adaptability to complex dynamic systems. Furthermore, we employ a black-box adaptive SDE solver with a neural network to achieve realistic, time varying posterior approximations, thereby improving the expressiveness of the variational posterior. Comprehensive experimental evaluations demonstrate that our approach outperforms traditional methods in terms of flexibility, accuracy, and other key performance metrics. This work not only provides a robust Bayesian extension to DiffGP models but also validates its effectiveness in handling intricate dynamic behaviors, thereby advancing the applicability of Gaussian process models in diverse real-world scenarios.

Flexible Bayesian Last Layer Models Using Implicit Priors and Diffusion Posterior Sampling

Jian Xu, Zhiqi Lin, Shigui Li et al.

Bayesian Last Layer (BLL) models focus solely on uncertainty in the output layer of neural networks, demonstrating comparable performance to more complex Bayesian models. However, the use of Gaussian priors for last layer weights in Bayesian Last Layer (BLL) models limits their expressive capacity when faced with non-Gaussian, outlier-rich, or high-dimensional datasets. To address this shortfall, we introduce a novel approach that combines diffusion techniques and implicit priors for variational learning of Bayesian last layer weights. This method leverages implicit distributions for modeling weight priors in BLL, coupled with diffusion samplers for approximating true posterior predictions, thereby establishing a comprehensive Bayesian prior and posterior estimation strategy. By delivering an explicit and computationally efficient variational lower bound, our method aims to augment the expressive abilities of BLL models, enhancing model accuracy, calibration, and out-of-distribution detection proficiency. Through detailed exploration and experimental validation, We showcase the method's potential for improving predictive accuracy and uncertainty quantification while ensuring computational efficiency.

PDF: A Probability-Driven Framework for Open World 3D Point Cloud Semantic Segmentation

Jinfeng Xu, Siyuan Yang, Xianzhi Li et al.

Existing point cloud semantic segmentation networks cannot identify unknown classes and update their knowledge, due to a closed-set and static perspective of the real world, which would induce the intelligent agent to make bad decisions. To address this problem, we propose a Probability-Driven Framework (PDF) for open world semantic segmentation that includes (i) a lightweight U-decoder branch to identify unknown classes by estimating the uncertainties, (ii) a flexible pseudo-labeling scheme to supply geometry features along with probability distribution features of unknown classes by generating pseudo labels, and (iii) an incremental knowledge distillation strategy to incorporate novel classes into the existing knowledge base gradually. Our framework enables the model to behave like human beings, which could recognize unknown objects and incrementally learn them with the corresponding knowledge. Experimental results on the S3DIS and ScanNetv2 datasets demonstrate that the proposed PDF outperforms other methods by a large margin in both important tasks of open world semantic segmentation.

GraphEdge: Dynamic Graph Partition and Task Scheduling for GNNs Computing in Edge Network

Wenjing Xiao, Chenglong Shi, Miaojiang Chen et al.

With the exponential growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, edge computing (EC) is gradually playing an important role in providing cost-effective services. However, existing approaches struggle to perform well in graph-structured scenarios where user data is correlated, such as traffic flow prediction and social relationship recommender systems. In particular, graph neural network (GNN)-based approaches lead to expensive server communication cost. To address this problem, we propose GraphEdge, an efficient GNN-based EC architecture. It considers the EC system of GNN tasks, where there are associations between users and it needs to take into account the task data of its neighbors when processing the tasks of a user. Specifically, the architecture first perceives the user topology and represents their data associations as a graph layout at each time step. Then the graph layout is optimized by calling our proposed hierarchical traversal graph cut algorithm (HiCut), which cuts the graph layout into multiple weakly associated subgraphs based on the aggregation characteristics of GNN, and the communication cost between different subgraphs during GNN inference is minimized. Finally, based on the optimized graph layout, our proposed deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based graph offloading algorithm (DRLGO) is executed to obtain the optimal offloading strategy for the tasks of users, the offloading strategy is subgraph-based, it tries to offload user tasks in a subgraph to the same edge server as possible while minimizing the task processing time and energy consumption of the EC system. Experimental results show the good effectiveness and dynamic adaptation of our proposed architecture and it also performs well even in dynamic scenarios.

Efficient Multi-Task Reinforcement Learning via Task-Specific Action Correction

Jinyuan Feng, Min Chen, Zhiqiang Pu et al.

Multi-task reinforcement learning (MTRL) demonstrate potential for enhancing the generalization of a robot, enabling it to perform multiple tasks concurrently. However, the performance of MTRL may still be susceptible to conflicts between tasks and negative interference. To facilitate efficient MTRL, we propose Task-Specific Action Correction (TSAC), a general and complementary approach designed for simultaneous learning of multiple tasks. TSAC decomposes policy learning into two separate policies: a shared policy (SP) and an action correction policy (ACP). To alleviate conflicts resulting from excessive focus on specific tasks' details in SP, ACP incorporates goal-oriented sparse rewards, enabling an agent to adopt a long-term perspective and achieve generalization across tasks. Additional rewards transform the original problem into a multi-objective MTRL problem. Furthermore, to convert the multi-objective MTRL into a single-objective formulation, TSAC assigns a virtual expected budget to the sparse rewards and employs Lagrangian method to transform a constrained single-objective optimization into an unconstrained one. Experimental evaluations conducted on Meta-World's MT10 and MT50 benchmarks demonstrate that TSAC outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods, achieving significant improvements in both sample efficiency and effective action execution.

SASep: Saliency-Aware Structured Separation of Geometry and Feature for Open Set Learning on Point Clouds

Jinfeng Xu, Xianzhi Li, Yuan Tang et al.

Recent advancements in deep learning have greatly enhanced 3D object recognition, but most models are limited to closed-set scenarios, unable to handle unknown samples in real-world applications. Open-set recognition (OSR) addresses this limitation by enabling models to both classify known classes and identify novel classes. However, current OSR methods rely on global features to differentiate known and unknown classes, treating the entire object uniformly and overlooking the varying semantic importance of its different parts. To address this gap, we propose Salience-Aware Structured Separation (SASep), which includes (i) a tunable semantic decomposition (TSD) module to semantically decompose objects into important and unimportant parts, (ii) a geometric synthesis strategy (GSS) to generate pseudo-unknown objects by combining these unimportant parts, and (iii) a synth-aided margin separation (SMS) module to enhance feature-level separation by expanding the feature distributions between classes. Together, these components improve both geometric and feature representations, enhancing the model's ability to effectively distinguish known and unknown classes. Experimental results show that SASep achieves superior performance in 3D OSR, outperforming existing state-of-the-art methods.

DPMLBench: Holistic Evaluation of Differentially Private Machine Learning

Chengkun Wei, Minghu Zhao, Zhikun Zhang et al.

Differential privacy (DP), as a rigorous mathematical definition quantifying privacy leakage, has become a well-accepted standard for privacy protection. Combined with powerful machine learning techniques, differentially private machine learning (DPML) is increasingly important. As the most classic DPML algorithm, DP-SGD incurs a significant loss of utility, which hinders DPML's deployment in practice. Many studies have recently proposed improved algorithms based on DP-SGD to mitigate utility loss. However, these studies are isolated and cannot comprehensively measure the performance of improvements proposed in algorithms. More importantly, there is a lack of comprehensive research to compare improvements in these DPML algorithms across utility, defensive capabilities, and generalizability. We fill this gap by performing a holistic measurement of improved DPML algorithms on utility and defense capability against membership inference attacks (MIAs) on image classification tasks. We first present a taxonomy of where improvements are located in the machine learning life cycle. Based on our taxonomy, we jointly perform an extensive measurement study of the improved DPML algorithms. We also cover state-of-the-art label differential privacy (Label DP) algorithms in the evaluation. According to our empirical results, DP can effectively defend against MIAs, and sensitivity-bounding techniques such as per-sample gradient clipping play an important role in defense. We also explore some improvements that can maintain model utility and defend against MIAs more effectively. Experiments show that Label DP algorithms achieve less utility loss but are fragile to MIAs. To support our evaluation, we implement a modular re-usable software, DPMLBench, which enables sensitive data owners to deploy DPML algorithms and serves as a benchmark tool for researchers and practitioners.

Pay More Attention to Relation Exploration for Knowledge Base Question Answering

Yong Cao, Xianzhi Li, Huiwen Liu et al.

Knowledge base question answering (KBQA) is a challenging task that aims to retrieve correct answers from large-scale knowledge bases. Existing attempts primarily focus on entity representation and final answer reasoning, which results in limited supervision for this task. Moreover, the relations, which empirically determine the reasoning path selection, are not fully considered in recent advancements. In this study, we propose a novel framework, RE-KBQA, that utilizes relations in the knowledge base to enhance entity representation and introduce additional supervision. We explore guidance from relations in three aspects, including (1) distinguishing similar entities by employing a variational graph auto-encoder to learn relation importance; (2) exploring extra supervision by predicting relation distributions as soft labels with a multi-task scheme; (3) designing a relation-guided re-ranking algorithm for post-processing. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our framework, improving the F1 score by 5.7% from 40.5 to 46.3 on CWQ and 5.8% from 62.8 to 68.5 on WebQSP, better or on par with state-of-the-art methods.

ML4ML: Automated Invariance Testing for Machine Learning Models

Zukang Liao, Pengfei Zhang, Min Chen

In machine learning (ML) workflows, determining the invariance qualities of an ML model is a common testing procedure. Traditionally, invariance qualities are evaluated using simple formula-based scores, e.g., accuracy. In this paper, we show that testing the invariance qualities of ML models may result in complex visual patterns that cannot be classified using simple formulas. In order to test ML models by analyzing such visual patterns automatically using other ML models, we propose a systematic framework that is applicable to a variety of invariance qualities. We demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the framework by developing ML4ML models (assessors) for determining rotation-, brightness-, and size-variances of a collection of neural networks. Our testing results show that the trained ML4ML assessors can perform such analytical tasks with sufficient accuracy.

Optimizing Video Caching at the Edge: A Hybrid Multi-Point Process Approach

Xianzhi Zhang, Yipeng Zhou, Di Wu et al.

It is always a challenging problem to deliver a huge volume of videos over the Internet. To meet the high bandwidth and stringent playback demand, one feasible solution is to cache video contents on edge servers based on predicted video popularity. Traditional caching algorithms (e.g., LRU, LFU) are too simple to capture the dynamics of video popularity, especially long-tailed videos. Recent learning-driven caching algorithms (e.g., DeepCache) show promising performance, however, such black-box approaches are lack of explainability and interpretability. Moreover, the parameter tuning requires a large number of historical records, which are difficult to obtain for videos with low popularity. In this paper, we optimize video caching at the edge using a white-box approach, which is highly efficient and also completely explainable. To accurately capture the evolution of video popularity, we develop a mathematical model called \emph{HRS} model, which is the combination of multiple point processes, including Hawkes' self-exciting, reactive and self-correcting processes. The key advantage of the HRS model is its explainability, and much less number of model parameters. In addition, all its model parameters can be learned automatically through maximizing the Log-likelihood function constructed by past video request events. Next, we further design an online HRS-based video caching algorithm. To verify its effectiveness, we conduct a series of experiments using real video traces collected from Tencent Video, one of the largest online video providers in China. Experiment results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms, with 12.3\% improvement on average in terms of cache hit rate under realistic settings.

DeepNetQoE: Self-adaptive QoE Optimization Framework of Deep Networks

Rui Wang, Min Chen, Nadra Guizani et al.

Future advances in deep learning and its impact on the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in all fields depends heavily on data size and computational power. Sacrificing massive computing resources in exchange for better precision rates of the network model is recognized by many researchers. This leads to huge computing consumption and satisfactory results are not always expected when computing resources are limited. Therefore, it is necessary to find a balance between resources and model performance to achieve satisfactory results. This article proposes a self-adaptive quality of experience (QoE) framework, DeepNetQoE, to guide the training of deep networks. A self-adaptive QoE model is set up that relates the model's accuracy with the computing resources required for training which will allow the experience value of the model to improve. To maximize the experience value when computer resources are limited, a resource allocation model and solutions need to be established. In addition, we carry out experiments based on four network models to analyze the experience values with respect to the crowd counting example. Experimental results show that the proposed DeepNetQoE is capable of adaptively obtaining a high experience value according to user needs and therefore guiding users to determine the computational resources allocated to the network models.

Feature-level and Model-level Audiovisual Fusion for Emotion Recognition in the Wild

Jie Cai, Zibo Meng, Ahmed Shehab Khan et al.

Emotion recognition plays an important role in human-computer interaction (HCI) and has been extensively studied for decades. Although tremendous improvements have been achieved for posed expressions, recognizing human emotions in "close-to-real-world" environments remains a challenge. In this paper, we proposed two strategies to fuse information extracted from different modalities, i.e., audio and visual. Specifically, we utilized LBP-TOP, an ensemble of CNNs, and a bi-directional LSTM (BLSTM) to extract features from the visual channel, and the OpenSmile toolkit to extract features from the audio channel. Two kinds of fusion methods, i,e., feature-level fusion and model-level fusion, were developed to utilize the information extracted from the two channels. Experimental results on the EmotiW2018 AFEW dataset have shown that the proposed fusion methods outperform the baseline methods significantly and achieve better or at least comparable performance compared with the state-of-the-art methods, where the model-level fusion performs better when one of the channels totally fails.

AI-Skin : Skin Disease Recognition based on Self-learning and Wide Data Collection through a Closed Loop Framework

Min Chen, Ping Zhou, Di Wu et al.

There are a lot of hidden dangers in the change of human skin conditions, such as the sunburn caused by long-time exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which not only has aesthetic impact causing psychological depression and lack of self-confidence, but also may even be life-threatening due to skin canceration. Current skin disease researches adopt the auto-classification system for improving the accuracy rate of skin disease classification. However, the excessive dependence on the image sample database is unable to provide individualized diagnosis service for different population groups. To overcome this problem, a medical AI framework based on data width evolution and self-learning is put forward in this paper to provide skin disease medical service meeting the requirement of real time, extendibility and individualization. First, the wide collection of data in the close-loop information flow of user and remote medical data center is discussed. Next, a data set filter algorithm based on information entropy is given, to lighten the load of edge node and meanwhile improve the learning ability of remote cloud analysis model. In addition, the framework provides an external algorithm load module, which can be compatible with the application requirements according to the model selected. Three kinds of deep learning model, i.e. LeNet-5, AlexNet and VGG16, are loaded and compared, which have verified the universality of the algorithm load module. The experiment platform for the proposed real-time, individualized and extensible skin disease recognition system is built. And the system's computation and communication delay under the interaction scenario between tester and remote data center are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the system we put forward is reliable and effective.

Min Chen, Yingying Jiang, Yong Cao et al.

Current artificial intelligence (AI) technology is mainly used in rational work such as computation and logical analysis. How to make the machine as aesthetic and creative as humans has gradually gained attention. This paper presents a creative game system (i.e., CreativeBioMan) for the first time. It combines brain wave data and multimodal emotion data, and then uses an AI algorithm for intelligent decision fusion, which can be used in artistic creation, aiming at separating the artist from repeated labor creation. To imitate the process of humans' artistic creation, the creation process of the algorithm is related to artists' previous artworks and their emotion. EEG data is used to analyze the style of artists and then match them with a style from a data set of historical works. Then, universal AI algorithms are combined with the unique creativity of each artist that evolve into a personalized creation algorithm. According to the results of cloud emotion recognition, the color of the artworks is corrected so that the artist's emotions are fully reflected in the works, and thus novel works of art are created. This allows the machine to integrate the understanding of past art and emotions with the ability to create new art forms, in the same manner as humans. This paper introduces the system architecture of CreativeBioMan from two aspects: data collection of the brain and body wearable devices, as well as the intelligent decision-making fusion of models. A Testbed platform is built for an experiment and the creativity of the works produced by the system is analyzed.

Label-less Learning for Traffic Control in an Edge Network

Min Chen, Yixue Hao, Kai Lin et al.

With the development of intelligent applications (e.g., self-driving, real-time emotion recognition, etc), there are higher requirements for the cloud intelligence. However, cloud intelligence depends on the multi-modal data collected by user equipments (UEs). Due to the limited capacity of network bandwidth, offloading all data generated from the UEs to the remote cloud is impractical. Thus, in this article, we consider the challenging issue of achieving a certain level of cloud intelligence while reducing network traffic. In order to solve this problem, we design a traffic control algorithm based on label-less learning on the edge cloud, which is dubbed as LLTC. By the use of the limited computing and storage resources at edge cloud, LLTC evaluates the value of data, which will be offloaded. Specifically, we first give a statement of the problem and the system architecture. Then, we design the LLTC algorithm in detail. Finally, we set up the system testbed. Experimental results show that the proposed LLTC can guarantee the required cloud intelligence while minimizing the amount of data transmission.

Brain Intelligence: Go Beyond Artificial Intelligence

Huimin Lu, Yujie Li, Min Chen et al.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an important technology that supports daily social life and economic activities. It contributes greatly to the sustainable growth of Japan's economy and solves various social problems. In recent years, AI has attracted attention as a key for growth in developed countries such as Europe and the United States and developing countries such as China and India. The attention has been focused mainly on developing new artificial intelligence information communication technology (ICT) and robot technology (RT). Although recently developed AI technology certainly excels in extracting certain patterns, there are many limitations. Most ICT models are overly dependent on big data, lack a self-idea function, and are complicated. In this paper, rather than merely developing next-generation artificial intelligence technology, we aim to develop a new concept of general-purpose intelligence cognition technology called Beyond AI. Specifically, we plan to develop an intelligent learning model called Brain Intelligence (BI) that generates new ideas about events without having experienced them by using artificial life with an imagine function. We will also conduct demonstrations of the developed BI intelligence learning model on automatic driving, precision medical care, and industrial robots.

Underwater Optical Image Processing: A Comprehensive Review

Huimin Lu, Yujie Li, Yudong Zhang et al.

Underwater cameras are widely used to observe the sea floor. They are usually included in autonomous underwater vehicles, unmanned underwater vehicles, and in situ ocean sensor networks. Despite being an important sensor for monitoring underwater scenes, there exist many issues with recent underwater camera sensors. Because of lights transportation characteristics in water and the biological activity at the sea floor, the acquired underwater images often suffer from scatters and large amounts of noise. Over the last five years, many methods have been proposed to overcome traditional underwater imaging problems. This paper aims to review the state-of-the-art techniques in underwater image processing by highlighting the contributions and challenges presented in over 40 papers. We present an overview of various underwater image processing approaches, such as underwater image descattering, underwater image color restoration, and underwater image quality assessments. Finally, we summarize the future trends and challenges in designing and processing underwater imaging sensors.

POMDP-lite for Robust Robot Planning under Uncertainty

Min Chen, Emilio Frazzoli, David Hsu et al.

The partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) provides a principled general model for planning under uncertainty. However, solving a general POMDP is computationally intractable in the worst case. This paper introduces POMDP-lite, a subclass of POMDPs in which the hidden state variables are constant or only change deterministically. We show that a POMDP-lite is equivalent to a set of fully observable Markov decision processes indexed by a hidden parameter and is useful for modeling a variety of interesting robotic tasks. We develop a simple model-based Bayesian reinforcement learning algorithm to solve POMDP-lite models. The algorithm performs well on large-scale POMDP-lite models with up to $10^{20}$ states and outperforms the state-of-the-art general-purpose POMDP algorithms. We further show that the algorithm is near-Bayesian-optimal under suitable conditions.

Energy Efficiency Optimization for MIMO-OFDM Mobile Multimedia Communication Systems with QoS Constraints

Xiaohu Ge, Xi Huang, Yuming Wang et al.

It is widely recognized that besides the quality of service (QoS), the energy efficiency is also a key parameter in designing and evaluating mobile multimedia communication systems, which has catalyzed great interest in recent literature. In this paper, an energy efficiency model is first proposed for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) mobile multimedia communication systems with statistical QoS constraints. Employing the channel matrix singular-value-decomposition (SVD) method, all subchannels are classified by their channel characteristics. Furthermore, the multi-channel joint optimization problem in conventional MIMO-OFDM communication systems is transformed into a multi-target single channel optimization problem by grouping all subchannels. Therefore, a closed-form solution of the energy efficiency optimization is derived for MIMO-OFDM mobile mlutimedia communication systems. As a consequence, an energy-efficiency optimized power allocation (EEOPA) algorithm is proposed to improve the energy efficiency of MIMO-OFDM mobile multimedia communication systems. Simulation comparisons validate that the proposed EEOPA algorithm can guarantee the required QoS with high energy efficiency in MIMO-OFDM mobile multimedia communication systems.
