Latent Optimal Paths by Gumbel Propagation for Variational Bayesian Dynamic ProgrammingXinlei Niu, Christian Walder, Jing Zhang et al.
We propose the stochastic optimal path which solves the classical optimal path problem by a probability-softening solution. This unified approach transforms a wide range of DP problems into directed acyclic graphs in which all paths follow a Gibbs distribution. We show the equivalence of the Gibbs distribution to a message-passing algorithm by the properties of the Gumbel distribution and give all the ingredients required for variational Bayesian inference of a latent path, namely Bayesian dynamic programming (BDP). We demonstrate the usage of BDP in the latent space of variational autoencoders (VAEs) and propose the BDP-VAE which captures structured sparse optimal paths as latent variables. This enables end-to-end training for generative tasks in which models rely on unobserved structural information. At last, we validate the behavior of our approach and showcase its applicability in two real-world applications: text-to-speech and singing voice synthesis. Our implementation code is available at \url{https://github.com/XinleiNIU/LatentOptimalPathsBayesianDP}.

How Far Are Surgeons from Surgical World Models? A Pilot Study on Zero-shot Surgical Video Generation with Expert AssessmentZhen Chen, Qing Xu, Jinlin Wu et al.
Foundation models in video generation are demonstrating remarkable capabilities as potential world models for simulating the physical world. However, their application in high-stakes domains like surgery, which demand deep, specialized causal knowledge rather than general physical rules, remains a critical unexplored gap. To systematically address this challenge, we present SurgVeo, the first expert-curated benchmark for video generation model evaluation in surgery, and the Surgical Plausibility Pyramid (SPP), a novel, four-tiered framework tailored to assess model outputs from basic appearance to complex surgical strategy. On the basis of the SurgVeo benchmark, we task the advanced Veo-3 model with a zero-shot prediction task on surgical clips from laparoscopic and neurosurgical procedures. A panel of four board-certified surgeons evaluates the generated videos according to the SPP. Our results reveal a distinct "plausibility gap": while Veo-3 achieves exceptional Visual Perceptual Plausibility, it fails critically at higher levels of the SPP, including Instrument Operation Plausibility, Environment Feedback Plausibility, and Surgical Intent Plausibility. This work provides the first quantitative evidence of the chasm between visually convincing mimicry and causal understanding in surgical AI. Our findings from SurgVeo and the SPP establish a crucial foundation and roadmap for developing future models capable of navigating the complexities of specialized, real-world healthcare domains.

LSVOS Challenge 3rd Place Report: SAM2 and Cutie based VOSXinyu Liu, Jing Zhang, Kexin Zhang et al.
Video Object Segmentation (VOS) presents several challenges, including object occlusion and fragmentation, the dis-appearance and re-appearance of objects, and tracking specific objects within crowded scenes. In this work, we combine the strengths of the state-of-the-art (SOTA) models SAM2 and Cutie to address these challenges. Additionally, we explore the impact of various hyperparameters on video instance segmentation performance. Our approach achieves a J\&F score of 0.7952 in the testing phase of LSVOS challenge VOS track, ranking third overall.
