Enabling Intelligent Interactions between an Agent and an LLM: A Reinforcement Learning Approach

Large language models (LLMs) encode a vast amount of world knowledge acquired from massive text datasets. Recent studies have demonstrated that LLMs can assist an embodied agent in solving complex sequential decision making tasks by providing high-level instructions. However, interactions with LLMs can be time-consuming. In many practical scenarios, it requires a significant amount of storage space that can only be deployed on remote cloud servers. Additionally, using commercial LLMs can be costly since they may charge based on usage frequency. In this paper, we explore how to enable intelligent cost-effective interactions between a down stream task oriented agent and an LLM. We find that this problem can be naturally formulated by a Markov decision process (MDP), and propose When2Ask, a reinforcement learning based approach that learns when it is necessary to query LLMs for high-level instructions to accomplish a target task. On one side, When2Ask discourages unnecessary redundant interactions, while on the other side, it enables the agent to identify and follow useful instructions from the LLM. This enables the agent to halt an ongoing plan and transition to a more suitable one based on new environmental observations. Experiments on MiniGrid and Habitat environments that entail planning sub-goals demonstrate that When2Ask learns to solve target tasks with only a few necessary interactions with the LLM, significantly reducing interaction costs in testing environments compared with baseline methods. A Unified Algebraic Perspective on Lipschitz Neural Networks

Important research efforts have focused on the design and training of neural networks with a controlled Lipschitz constant. The goal is to increase and sometimes guarantee the robustness against adversarial attacks. Recent promising techniques draw inspirations from different backgrounds to design 1-Lipschitz neural networks, just to name a few: convex potential layers derive from the discretization of continuous dynamical systems, Almost-Orthogonal-Layer proposes a tailored method for matrix rescaling. However, it is today important to consider the recent and promising contributions in the field under a common theoretical lens to better design new and improved layers. This paper introduces a novel algebraic perspective unifying various types of 1-Lipschitz neural networks, including the ones previously mentioned, along with methods based on orthogonality and spectral methods. Interestingly, we show that many existing techniques can be derived and generalized via finding analytical solutions of a common semidefinite programming (SDP) condition. We also prove that AOL biases the scaled weight to the ones which are close to the set of orthogonal matrices in a certain mathematical manner. Moreover, our algebraic condition, combined with the Gershgorin circle theorem, readily leads to new and diverse parameterizations for 1-Lipschitz network layers. Our approach, called SDP-based Lipschitz Layers (SLL), allows us to design non-trivial yet efficient generalization of convex potential layers. Finally, the comprehensive set of experiments on image classification shows that SLLs outperform previous approaches on certified robust accuracy. Expression Syntax Information Bottleneck for Math Word Problems

Math Word Problems (MWP) aims to automatically solve mathematical questions given in texts. Previous studies tend to design complex models to capture additional information in the original text so as to enable the model to gain more comprehensive features. In this paper, we turn our attention in the opposite direction, and work on how to discard redundant features containing spurious correlations for MWP. To this end, we design an Expression Syntax Information Bottleneck method for MWP (called ESIB) based on variational information bottleneck, which extracts essential features of expression syntax tree while filtering latent-specific redundancy containing syntax-irrelevant features. The key idea of ESIB is to encourage multiple models to predict the same expression syntax tree for different problem representations of the same problem by mutual learning so as to capture consistent information of expression syntax tree and discard latent-specific redundancy. To improve the generalization ability of the model and generate more diverse expressions, we design a self-distillation loss to encourage the model to rely more on the expression syntax information in the latent space. Experimental results on two large-scale benchmarks show that our model not only achieves state-of-the-art results but also generates more diverse solutions. Audio Self-supervised Learning: A Survey

Inspired by the humans' cognitive ability to generalise knowledge and skills, Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) targets at discovering general representations from large-scale data without requiring human annotations, which is an expensive and time consuming task. Its success in the fields of computer vision and natural language processing have prompted its recent adoption into the field of audio and speech processing. Comprehensive reviews summarising the knowledge in audio SSL are currently missing. To fill this gap, in the present work, we provide an overview of the SSL methods used for audio and speech processing applications. Herein, we also summarise the empirical works that exploit the audio modality in multi-modal SSL frameworks, and the existing suitable benchmarks to evaluate the power of SSL in the computer audition domain. Finally, we discuss some open problems and point out the future directions on the development of audio SSL.

EEG based Emotion Recognition: A Tutorial and Review

Emotion recognition technology through analyzing the EEG signal is currently an essential concept in Artificial Intelligence and holds great potential in emotional health care, human-computer interaction, multimedia content recommendation, etc. Though there have been several works devoted to reviewing EEG-based emotion recognition, the content of these reviews needs to be updated. In addition, those works are either fragmented in content or only focus on specific techniques adopted in this area but neglect the holistic perspective of the entire technical routes. Hence, in this paper, we review from the perspective of researchers who try to take the first step on this topic. We review the recent representative works in the EEG-based emotion recognition research and provide a tutorial to guide the researchers to start from the beginning. The scientific basis of EEG-based emotion recognition in the psychological and physiological levels is introduced. Further, we categorize these reviewed works into different technical routes and illustrate the theoretical basis and the research motivation, which will help the readers better understand why those techniques are studied and employed. At last, existing challenges and future investigations are also discussed in this paper, which guides the researchers to decide potential future research directions.

When Clients Stop Following: A Cognitive Conceptualization Diagram-driven Framework for Strategic Counseling

Large Language Models (LLMs) show promise in psychological counseling, yet existing benchmarks rely heavily on highly cooperative simulated clients. We observe a critical counselor-following phenomenon: these clients often rapidly shift from resistance to compliance after only a few turns, creating an illusion of therapeutic progress and inflating scores under current evaluation protocols through superficial empathy. To address this evaluation mismatch, we propose a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-grounded resistance-aware framework. We introduce CARS, a client simulator that explicitly models dynamic resistance via Cognitive Conceptualization Diagrams (CCDs). We present STREAMS, a dual-module framework that decouples strategic reasoning (Thinker) from response generation (Presenter) and optimizes it via reinforcement learning. We further propose EWTS-MI, an entropy-weighted metric for evaluating responsiveness under high-friction interactions. Experiments across resistant and non-resistant counseling settings validate our findings on evaluation mismatch and demonstrate the effectiveness of resistance-aware training for improving strategic robustness under challenging counseling interactions.

DMT-CBT: Longitudinal Therapeutic State Modeling for CBT Counseling

Large language models (LLMs) have shown growing potential for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) counseling. However, most existing approaches still formulate counseling as a local response generation problem, focusing on empathetic replies within short, text-only, or single-session interactions. We argue that this formulation fundamentally mismatches the nature of real psychotherapy. In clinical CBT, therapy is a longitudinal process in which therapists continuously infer, update, and intervene on evolving therapeutic states across sessions. Realistic CBT further involves multimodal inference and delayed cross-session intervention effects, requiring models to capture longitudinal therapeutic state evolution under partial observability. We propose DMT-CBT, a framework for Dynamic Modeling of evolving Therapeutic states in CBT counseling. DMT-CBT maintains structured therapeutic states across sessions while incorporating multimodal behavioral grounding and tool-augmented intervention to support adaptive therapeutic reasoning. Based on this framework, we construct DMTCorpus, a synthetic multi-session multimodal CBT counseling dataset featuring evolving therapeutic states, image-grounded client behaviors, and cross-session intervention continuity. Experimental results show that DMT-CBT improves counseling fidelity and therapeutic alliance, produces more favorable longitudinal affective trajectories, and preserves therapeutic states more faithfully than post-hoc extraction approaches.

A Robust Accelerated Optimization Algorithm for Strongly Convex Functions

This work proposes an accelerated first-order algorithm we call the Robust Momentum Method for optimizing smooth strongly convex functions. The algorithm has a single scalar parameter that can be tuned to trade off robustness to gradient noise versus worst-case convergence rate. At one extreme, the algorithm is faster than Nesterov's Fast Gradient Method by a constant factor but more fragile to noise. At the other extreme, the algorithm reduces to the Gradient Method and is very robust to noise. The algorithm design technique is inspired by methods from classical control theory and the resulting algorithm has a simple analytical form. Algorithm performance is verified on a series of numerical simulations in both noise-free and relative gradient noise cases.

Control Interpretations for First-Order Optimization Methods

First-order iterative optimization methods play a fundamental role in large scale optimization and machine learning. This paper presents control interpretations for such optimization methods. First, we give loop-shaping interpretations for several existing optimization methods and show that they are composed of basic control elements such as PID and lag compensators. Next, we apply the small gain theorem to draw a connection between the convergence rate analysis of optimization methods and the input-output gain computations of certain complementary sensitivity functions. These connections suggest that standard classical control synthesis tools may be brought to bear on the design of optimization algorithms.

PersonViT: Large-scale Self-supervised Vision Transformer for Person Re-Identification

Person Re-Identification (ReID) aims to retrieve relevant individuals in non-overlapping camera images and has a wide range of applications in the field of public safety. In recent years, with the development of Vision Transformer (ViT) and self-supervised learning techniques, the performance of person ReID based on self-supervised pre-training has been greatly improved. Person ReID requires extracting highly discriminative local fine-grained features of the human body, while traditional ViT is good at extracting context-related global features, making it difficult to focus on local human body features. To this end, this article introduces the recently emerged Masked Image Modeling (MIM) self-supervised learning method into person ReID, and effectively extracts high-quality global and local features through large-scale unsupervised pre-training by combining masked image modeling and discriminative contrastive learning, and then conducts supervised fine-tuning training in the person ReID task. This person feature extraction method based on ViT with masked image modeling (PersonViT) has the good characteristics of unsupervised, scalable, and strong generalization capabilities, overcoming the problem of difficult annotation in supervised person ReID, and achieves state-of-the-art results on publicly available benchmark datasets, including MSMT17, Market1501, DukeMTMC-reID, and Occluded-Duke. Towards a Theoretical Foundation of Policy Optimization for Learning Control Policies

Gradient-based methods have been widely used for system design and optimization in diverse application domains. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in studying theoretical properties of these methods in the context of control and reinforcement learning. This article surveys some of the recent developments on policy optimization, a gradient-based iterative approach for feedback control synthesis, popularized by successes of reinforcement learning. We take an interdisciplinary perspective in our exposition that connects control theory, reinforcement learning, and large-scale optimization. We review a number of recently-developed theoretical results on the optimization landscape, global convergence, and sample complexity of gradient-based methods for various continuous control problems such as the linear quadratic regulator (LQR), $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ control, risk-sensitive control, linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control, and output feedback synthesis. In conjunction with these optimization results, we also discuss how direct policy optimization handles stability and robustness concerns in learning-based control, two main desiderata in control engineering. We conclude the survey by pointing out several challenges and opportunities at the intersection of learning and control.

Provable Acceleration of Heavy Ball beyond Quadratics for a Class of Polyak-Łojasiewicz Functions when the Non-Convexity is Averaged-Out

Heavy Ball (HB) nowadays is one of the most popular momentum methods in non-convex optimization. It has been widely observed that incorporating the Heavy Ball dynamic in gradient-based methods accelerates the training process of modern machine learning models. However, the progress on establishing its theoretical foundation of acceleration is apparently far behind its empirical success. Existing provable acceleration results are of the quadratic or close-to-quadratic functions, as the current techniques of showing HB's acceleration are limited to the case when the Hessian is fixed. In this work, we develop some new techniques that help show acceleration beyond quadratics, which is achieved by analyzing how the change of the Hessian at two consecutive time points affects the convergence speed. Based on our technical results, a class of Polyak-Łojasiewicz (PL) optimization problems for which provable acceleration can be achieved via HB is identified. Moreover, our analysis demonstrates a benefit of adaptively setting the momentum parameter. (Update: 08/29/2023) Erratum is added in Appendix J. This is an updated version that fixes an issue in the previous version. An additional condition needs to be satisfied for the acceleration result of HB beyond quadratics in this work, which naturally holds when the dimension is one or, more broadly, when the Hessian is diagonal. Optimal Tracking Performance of Control Systems with Two-Channel Constraints

This paper focuses on the tracking performance limitation for a class of networked control systems(NCSs) with two-channel constraints. In communication channels, we consider bandwidth, energy constraints and additive colored Gaussian noise(ACGN) simultaneously. In plant, non-minimal zeros and unstable poles are considered; multi-repeated zeros and poles are also applicable. To obtain the optimal performance, the two-parameter controller is adopted. The theoretical results show that the optimal tracking performance is influenced by the non-minimum phase zeros, unstable poles, gain at all frequencies of the given plant, and the reference input signal for NCSs. Moreover, the performance limitation is also affected by the limited bandwidth, additive colored Gaussian noise, and the corresponding multiples for the non-minimum phase zeros and unstable poles. Additionally, the channel minimal input power constraints are given under the condition ensuring the stability of the system and acquiring system performance limitation. Finally, simulation examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

Learning the Kalman Filter with Fine-Grained Sample Complexity

We develop the first end-to-end sample complexity of model-free policy gradient (PG) methods in discrete-time infinite-horizon Kalman filtering. Specifically, we introduce the receding-horizon policy gradient (RHPG-KF) framework and demonstrate $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(ε^{-2})$ sample complexity for RHPG-KF in learning a stabilizing filter that is $ε$-close to the optimal Kalman filter. Notably, the proposed RHPG-KF framework does not require the system to be open-loop stable nor assume any prior knowledge of a stabilizing filter. Our results shed light on applying model-free PG methods to control a linear dynamical system where the state measurements could be corrupted by statistical noises and other (possibly adversarial) disturbances.

Benchmarking the Capabilities of Large Language Models in Transportation System Engineering: Accuracy, Consistency, and Reasoning Behaviors

In this paper, we explore the capabilities of state-of-the-art large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4, GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Claude 3 Opus, Gemini 1.5 Pro, Llama 3, and Llama 3.1 in solving some selected undergraduate-level transportation engineering problems. We introduce TransportBench, a benchmark dataset that includes a sample of transportation engineering problems on a wide range of subjects in the context of planning, design, management, and control of transportation systems. This dataset is used by human experts to evaluate the capabilities of various commercial and open-sourced LLMs, especially their accuracy, consistency, and reasoning behaviors, in solving transportation engineering problems. Our comprehensive analysis uncovers the unique strengths and limitations of each LLM, e.g. our analysis shows the impressive accuracy and some unexpected inconsistent behaviors of Claude 3.5 Sonnet in solving TransportBench problems. Our study marks a thrilling first step toward harnessing artificial general intelligence for complex transportation challenges.

Global Convergence of Direct Policy Search for State-Feedback $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ Robust Control: A Revisit of Nonsmooth Synthesis with Goldstein Subdifferential

Direct policy search has been widely applied in modern reinforcement learning and continuous control. However, the theoretical properties of direct policy search on nonsmooth robust control synthesis have not been fully understood. The optimal $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ control framework aims at designing a policy to minimize the closed-loop $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ norm, and is arguably the most fundamental robust control paradigm. In this work, we show that direct policy search is guaranteed to find the global solution of the robust $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ state-feedback control design problem. Notice that policy search for optimal $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ control leads to a constrained nonconvex nonsmooth optimization problem, where the nonconvex feasible set consists of all the policies stabilizing the closed-loop dynamics. We show that for this nonsmooth optimization problem, all Clarke stationary points are global minimum. Next, we identify the coerciveness of the closed-loop $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ objective function, and prove that all the sublevel sets of the resultant policy search problem are compact. Based on these properties, we show that Goldstein's subgradient method and its implementable variants can be guaranteed to stay in the nonconvex feasible set and eventually find the global optimal solution of the $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ state-feedback synthesis problem. Our work builds a new connection between nonconvex nonsmooth optimization theory and robust control, leading to an interesting global convergence result for direct policy search on optimal $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ synthesis.

Large Language Model as a Policy Teacher for Training Reinforcement Learning Agents

Recent studies have uncovered the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) in addressing complex sequential decision-making tasks through the provision of high-level instructions. However, LLM-based agents lack specialization in tackling specific target problems, particularly in real-time dynamic environments. Additionally, deploying an LLM-based agent in practical scenarios can be both costly and time-consuming. On the other hand, reinforcement learning (RL) approaches train agents that specialize in the target task but often suffer from low sampling efficiency and high exploration costs. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework that addresses these challenges by training a smaller, specialized student RL agent using instructions from an LLM-based teacher agent. By incorporating the guidance from the teacher agent, the student agent can distill the prior knowledge of the LLM into its own model. Consequently, the student agent can be trained with significantly less data. Moreover, through further training with environment feedback, the student agent surpasses the capabilities of its teacher for completing the target task. We conducted experiments on challenging MiniGrid and Habitat environments, specifically designed for embodied AI research, to evaluate the effectiveness of our framework. Self-triggering in Vehicular Networked Systems with State-dependent Bursty Fading Channels

Vehicular Networked Systems (VNS) are mobile ad hoc networks where vehicles exchange information over wireless communication networks to ensure safe and efficient operation. It is, however, challenging to ensure system safety and efficiency as the wireless channels in VNS are often subject to state-dependent deep fades where the data rate suffers a severe drop and changes as a function of vehicle states. Such couplings between vehicle states and channel states in VNS thereby invalidate the use of separation principle to design event-based control strategies. By adopting a state-dependent fading channel model that was proposed to capture the interaction between vehicle and channel states, this paper presents a novel self-triggered scheme under which the VNS ensures efficient use of communication bandwidth while preserving stochastic stability. The novelty of the proposed scheme lies in its use of the state-dependent fading channel model in the event design that enables an adaptive and effective adjustment on transmission frequency in response to dynamic variations on channel and vehicle states. Under the proposed self-triggered scheme, this paper presents a novel source coding scheme that tracks vehicle's states with performance guarantee in the presence of state-dependent fading channels. The efficacy and advantages of the proposed scheme over other event-based strategies are verified through both simulation and experimental results of a leader-follower example.

Exact Formulas for Finite-Time Estimation Errors of Decentralized Temporal Difference Learning with Linear Function Approximation

In this paper, we consider the policy evaluation problem in multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) and derive exact closed-form formulas for the finite-time mean-squared estimation errors of decentralized temporal difference (TD) learning with linear function approximation. Our analysis hinges upon the fact that the decentralized TD learning method can be viewed as a Markov jump linear system (MJLS). Then standard MJLS theory can be applied to quantify the mean and covariance matrix of the estimation error of the decentralized TD method at every time step. Various implications of our exact formulas on the algorithm performance are also discussed. An interesting finding is that under a necessary and sufficient stability condition, the mean-squared TD estimation error will converge to an exact limit at a specific exponential rate.

Deep Smart Contract Intent Detection

In recent years, research in software security has concentrated on identifying vulnerabilities in smart contracts to prevent significant losses of crypto assets on blockchains. Despite early successes in this area, detecting developers' intents in smart contracts has become a more pressing issue, as malicious intents have caused substantial financial losses. Unfortunately, existing research lacks effective methods for detecting development intents in smart contracts. To address this gap, we propose \textsc{SmartIntentNN} (Smart Contract Intent Neural Network), a deep learning model designed to automatically detect development intents in smart contracts. \textsc{SmartIntentNN} leverages a pre-trained sentence encoder to generate contextual representations of smart contracts, employs a K-means clustering model to identify and highlight prominent intent features, and utilizes a bidirectional LSTM-based deep neural network for multi-label classification. We trained and evaluated \textsc{SmartIntentNN} on a dataset containing over 40,000 real-world smart contracts, employing self-comparison baselines in our experimental setup. The results show that \textsc{SmartIntentNN} achieves an F1-score of 0.8633 in identifying intents across 10 distinct categories, outperforming all baselines and addressing the gap in smart contract detection by incorporating intent analysis.

Power Line Aerial Image Restoration under dverse Weather: Datasets and Baselines

Power Line Autonomous Inspection (PLAI) plays a crucial role in the construction of smart grids due to its great advantages of low cost, high efficiency, and safe operation. PLAI is completed by accurately detecting the electrical components and defects in the aerial images captured by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). However, the visible quality of aerial images is inevitably degraded by adverse weather like haze, rain, or snow, which are found to drastically decrease the detection accuracy in our research. To circumvent this problem, we propose a new task of Power Line Aerial Image Restoration under Adverse Weather (PLAIR-AW), which aims to recover clean and high-quality images from degraded images with bad weather thus improving detection performance for PLAI. In this context, we are the first to release numerous corresponding datasets, namely, HazeCPLID, HazeTTPLA, HazeInsPLAD for power line aerial image dehazing, RainCPLID, RainTTPLA, RainInsPLAD for power line aerial image deraining, SnowCPLID, SnowInsPLAD for power line aerial image desnowing, which are synthesized upon the public power line aerial image datasets of CPLID, TTPLA, InsPLAD following the mathematical models. Meanwhile, we select numerous state-of-the-art methods from image restoration community as the baseline methods for PLAIR-AW. At last, we conduct large-scale empirical experiments to evaluate the performance of baseline methods on the proposed datasets. TrackSSM: A General Motion Predictor by State-Space Model

Temporal motion modeling has always been a key component in multiple object tracking (MOT) which can ensure smooth trajectory movement and provide accurate positional information to enhance association precision. However, current motion models struggle to be both efficient and effective across different application scenarios. To this end, we propose TrackSSM inspired by the recently popular state space models (SSM), a unified encoder-decoder motion framework that uses data-dependent state space model to perform temporal motion of trajectories. Specifically, we propose Flow-SSM, a module that utilizes the position and motion information from historical trajectories to guide the temporal state transition of object bounding boxes. Based on Flow-SSM, we design a flow decoder. It is composed of a cascaded motion decoding module employing Flow-SSM, which can use the encoded flow information to complete the temporal position prediction of trajectories. Additionally, we propose a Step-by-Step Linear (S$^2$L) training strategy. By performing linear interpolation between the positions of the object in the previous frame and the current frame, we construct the pseudo labels of step-by-step linear training, ensuring that the trajectory flow information can better guide the object bounding box in completing temporal transitions. TrackSSM utilizes a simple Mamba-Block to build a motion encoder for historical trajectories, forming a temporal motion model with an encoder-decoder structure in conjunction with the flow decoder. TrackSSM is applicable to various tracking scenarios and achieves excellent tracking performance across multiple benchmarks, further extending the potential of SSM-like temporal motion models in multi-object tracking tasks. Bridging Control with Neural Network Verifier alpha-beta-CROWN: A Tutorial

Learning-based methods for synthesizing controllers have gained popularity due to their high expressiveness and strong empirical performance. However, in safety-critical scenarios such as autonomous driving, robotics, and power systems, empirical performance alone is insufficient, and formal verification of controller properties such as stability and safety is highly desirable. Unfortunately, many prior verification approaches are either tied to specific structural assumptions on the system or the certificate, making them difficult to transfer across settings, or suffer from poor scalability on higher-dimensional neural network systems. In this tutorial, we present a unified framework that aims to mitigate this gap via bridging control with the state-of-the-art neural network verifier $α,\!β$-CROWN (alpha-beta-CROWN). At its core, $α,\!β$-CROWN is a general-purpose bounding engine for nonlinear functions represented as computation graphs: given an input domain, it can produce certified bounds and explicit linear relaxation of the nonlinear function. These certified bounds are useful on their own for tasks such as reachability analysis, and they also provide the foundation for more complex routines that perform satisfiability checking and optimization. More specifically, many control problems reduce to verifying real-valued inequalities over a state domain (e.g., Lyapunov theory). Consequently, $α,\!β$-CROWN enables scalable verification of such conditions by computing tight bounds and recursively partitioning and pruning subdomains based on the bounds. Thanks to GPU parallelization, this pipeline demonstrates superior scalability on verification and optimization problems that are challenging for traditional approaches. In this tutorial, we discuss the basics of $α,\!β$-CROWN and introduce its application to various control-related tasks.

A Complete Set of Quadratic Constraints for Repeated ReLU and Generalizations

This paper derives a complete set of quadratic constraints (QCs) for the repeated ReLU. The complete set of QCs is described by a collection of matrix copositivity conditions. We also show that only two functions satisfy all QCs in our complete set: the repeated ReLU and flipped ReLU. Thus our complete set of QCs bounds the repeated ReLU as tight as possible up to the sign invariance inherent in quadratic forms. We derive a similar complete set of incremental QCs for repeated ReLU, which can potentially lead to less conservative Lipschitz bounds for ReLU networks than the standard LipSDP approach. The basic constructions are also used to derive the complete sets of QCs for other piecewise linear activation functions such as leaky ReLU, MaxMin, and HouseHolder. Finally, we illustrate the use of the complete set of QCs to assess stability and performance for recurrent neural networks with ReLU activation functions. We rely on a standard copositivity relaxation to formulate the stability/performance condition as a semidefinite program. Simple examples are provided to illustrate that the complete sets of QCs and incremental QCs can yield less conservative bounds than existing sets.

Weight-based Channel-model Matrix Framework provides a reasonable solution for EEG-based cross-dataset emotion recognition

Cross-dataset emotion recognition as an extremely challenging task in the field of EEG-based affective computing is influenced by many factors, which makes the universal models yield unsatisfactory results. Facing the situation that lacks EEG information decoding research, we first analyzed the impact of different EEG information(individual, session, emotion and trial) for emotion recognition by sample space visualization, sample aggregation phenomena quantification, and energy pattern analysis on five public datasets. Based on these phenomena and patterns, we provided the processing methods and interpretable work of various EEG differences. Through the analysis of emotional feature distribution patterns, the Individual Emotional Feature Distribution Difference(IEFDD) was found, which was also considered as the main factor of the stability for emotion recognition. After analyzing the limitations of traditional modeling approach suffering from IEFDD, the Weight-based Channel-model Matrix Framework(WCMF) was proposed. To reasonably characterize emotional feature distribution patterns, four weight extraction methods were designed, and the optimal was the correction T-test(CT) weight extraction method. Finally, the performance of WCMF was validated on cross-dataset tasks in two kinds of experiments that simulated different practical scenarios, and the results showed that WCMF had more stable and better emotion recognition ability.

TSRBench: A Comprehensive Multi-task Multi-modal Time Series Reasoning Benchmark for Generalist Models

Time series data is ubiquitous in real-world scenarios and crucial for critical applications ranging from energy management to traffic control. Consequently, the ability to reason over time series is a fundamental skill for generalist models to solve practical problems. However, this dimension is notably absent from existing benchmarks of generalist models. To bridge this gap, we introduce TSRBench, a comprehensive multi-modal benchmark designed to stress-test the full spectrum of time series reasoning capabilities. TSRBench features: i) a diverse set of 4125 problems from 14 domains, and is categorized into 4 major dimensions: Perception, Reasoning, Prediction, and Decision-Making. ii) 15 tasks from the 4 dimensions evaluating essential reasoning capabilities (e.g., numerical reasoning). Through extensive experiments, we evaluated over 30 leading proprietary and open-source LLMs, VLMs, and TSLLMs within TSRBench. Our findings reveal that: i) scaling laws hold for perception and reasoning but break down for prediction; ii) strong reasoning does not guarantee accurate context-aware forecasting, indicating a decoupling between semantic understanding and numerical prediction; and iii) despite the complementary nature of textual and visual represenations of time series as inputs, current multimodal models fail to effectively fuse them for reciprocal performance gains. TSRBench provides a standardized evaluation platform that not only highlights existing challenges but also offers valuable insights to advance generalist models. Identity-Consistent Video Generation under Large Facial-Angle Variations

Single-view reference-to-video methods often struggle to preserve identity consistency under large facial-angle variations. This limitation naturally motivates the incorporation of multi-view facial references. However, simply introducing additional reference images exacerbates the \textit{copy-paste} problem, particularly the \textbf{\textit{view-dependent copy-paste}} artifact, which reduces facial motion naturalness. Although cross-paired data can alleviate this issue, collecting such data is costly. To balance the consistency and naturalness, we propose $\mathrm{Mv}^2\mathrm{ID}$, a multi-view conditioned framework under in-paired supervision. We introduce a region-masking training strategy to prevent shortcut learning and extract essential identity features by encouraging the model to aggregate complementary identity cues across views. In addition, we design a reference decoupled-RoPE mechanism that assigns distinct positional encoding to video and conditioning tokens for better modeling of their heterogeneous properties. Furthermore, we construct a large-scale dataset with diverse facial-angle variations and propose dedicated evaluation metrics for identity consistency and motion naturalness. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method significantly improves identity consistency while maintaining motion naturalness, outperforming existing approaches trained with cross-paired data.

COLD-Attack: Jailbreaking LLMs with Stealthiness and Controllability

Jailbreaks on large language models (LLMs) have recently received increasing attention. For a comprehensive assessment of LLM safety, it is essential to consider jailbreaks with diverse attributes, such as contextual coherence and sentiment/stylistic variations, and hence it is beneficial to study controllable jailbreaking, i.e. how to enforce control on LLM attacks. In this paper, we formally formulate the controllable attack generation problem, and build a novel connection between this problem and controllable text generation, a well-explored topic of natural language processing. Based on this connection, we adapt the Energy-based Constrained Decoding with Langevin Dynamics (COLD), a state-of-the-art, highly efficient algorithm in controllable text generation, and introduce the COLD-Attack framework which unifies and automates the search of adversarial LLM attacks under a variety of control requirements such as fluency, stealthiness, sentiment, and left-right-coherence. The controllability enabled by COLD-Attack leads to diverse new jailbreak scenarios which not only cover the standard setting of generating fluent (suffix) attack with continuation constraint, but also allow us to address new controllable attack settings such as revising a user query adversarially with paraphrasing constraint, and inserting stealthy attacks in context with position constraint. Our extensive experiments on various LLMs (Llama-2, Mistral, Vicuna, Guanaco, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4) show COLD-Attack's broad applicability, strong controllability, high success rate, and attack transferability. Integral Quadratic Constraints for Repeated ReLU

This paper presents a new dynamic integral quadratic constraint (IQC) for the repeated Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU). These dynamic IQCs can be used to analyze stability and induced $\ell_2$-gain performance of discrete-time, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with ReLU activation functions. These analysis conditions can be incorporated into learning-based controller synthesis methods, which currently rely on static IQCs. We show that our proposed dynamic IQCs for repeated ReLU form a superset of the dynamic IQCs for repeated, slope-restricted nonlinearities. We also prove that the $\ell_2$-gain bounds are nonincreasing with respect to the horizon used in the dynamic IQC filter. A numerical example using a simple (academic) RNN shows that our proposed IQCs lead to less conservative bounds than existing IQCs.

Are Large Language Models Possible to Conduct Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

In contemporary society, the issue of psychological health has become increasingly prominent, characterized by the diversification, complexity, and universality of mental disorders. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), currently the most influential and clinically effective psychological treatment method with no side effects, has limited coverage and poor quality in most countries. In recent years, researches on the recognition and intervention of emotional disorders using large language models (LLMs) have been validated, providing new possibilities for psychological assistance therapy. However, are LLMs truly possible to conduct cognitive behavioral therapy? Many concerns have been raised by mental health experts regarding the use of LLMs for therapy. Seeking to answer this question, we collected real CBT corpus from online video websites, designed and conducted a targeted automatic evaluation framework involving the evaluation of emotion tendency of generated text, structured dialogue pattern and proactive inquiry ability. For emotion tendency, we calculate the emotion tendency score of the CBT dialogue text generated by each model. For structured dialogue pattern, we use a diverse range of automatic evaluation metrics to compare speaking style, the ability to maintain consistency of topic and the use of technology in CBT between different models . As for inquiring to guide the patient, we utilize PQA (Proactive Questioning Ability) metric. We also evaluated the CBT ability of the LLM after integrating a CBT knowledge base to explore the help of introducing additional knowledge to enhance the model's CBT counseling ability. Four LLM variants with excellent performance on natural language processing are evaluated, and the experimental result shows the great potential of LLMs in psychological counseling realm, especially after combining with other technological means.

Benchmarking Micro-action Recognition: Dataset, Methods, and Applications

Micro-action is an imperceptible non-verbal behaviour characterised by low-intensity movement. It offers insights into the feelings and intentions of individuals and is important for human-oriented applications such as emotion recognition and psychological assessment. However, the identification, differentiation, and understanding of micro-actions pose challenges due to the imperceptible and inaccessible nature of these subtle human behaviors in everyday life. In this study, we innovatively collect a new micro-action dataset designated as Micro-action-52 (MA-52), and propose a benchmark named micro-action network (MANet) for micro-action recognition (MAR) task. Uniquely, MA-52 provides the whole-body perspective including gestures, upper- and lower-limb movements, attempting to reveal comprehensive micro-action cues. In detail, MA-52 contains 52 micro-action categories along with seven body part labels, and encompasses a full array of realistic and natural micro-actions, accounting for 205 participants and 22,422 video instances collated from the psychological interviews. Based on the proposed dataset, we assess MANet and other nine prevalent action recognition methods. MANet incorporates squeeze-and excitation (SE) and temporal shift module (TSM) into the ResNet architecture for modeling the spatiotemporal characteristics of micro-actions. Then a joint-embedding loss is designed for semantic matching between video and action labels; the loss is used to better distinguish between visually similar yet distinct micro-action categories. The extended application in emotion recognition has demonstrated one of the important values of our proposed dataset and method. In the future, further exploration of human behaviour, emotion, and psychological assessment will be conducted in depth. Hunyuan-Large: An Open-Source MoE Model with 52 Billion Activated Parameters by Tencent

In this paper, we introduce Hunyuan-Large, which is currently the largest open-source Transformer-based mixture of experts model, with a total of 389 billion parameters and 52 billion activation parameters, capable of handling up to 256K tokens. We conduct a thorough evaluation of Hunyuan-Large's superior performance across various benchmarks including language understanding and generation, logical reasoning, mathematical problem-solving, coding, long-context, and aggregated tasks, where it outperforms LLama3.1-70B and exhibits comparable performance when compared to the significantly larger LLama3.1-405B model. Key practice of Hunyuan-Large include large-scale synthetic data that is orders larger than in previous literature, a mixed expert routing strategy, a key-value cache compression technique, and an expert-specific learning rate strategy. Additionally, we also investigate the scaling laws and learning rate schedule of mixture of experts models, providing valuable insights and guidances for future model development and optimization. Energy Minimization for Federated Asynchronous Learning on Battery-Powered Mobile Devices via Application Co-running

Energy is an essential, but often forgotten aspect in large-scale federated systems. As most of the research focuses on tackling computational and statistical heterogeneity from the machine learning algorithms, the impact on the mobile system still remains unclear. In this paper, we design and implement an online optimization framework by connecting asynchronous execution of federated training with application co-running to minimize energy consumption on battery-powered mobile devices. From a series of experiments, we find that co-running the training process in the background with foreground applications gives the system a deep energy discount with negligible performance slowdown. Based on these results, we first study an offline problem assuming all the future occurrences of applications are available, and propose a dynamic programming-based algorithm. Then we propose an online algorithm using the Lyapunov framework to explore the solution space via the energy-staleness trade-off. The extensive experiments demonstrate that the online optimization framework can save over 60% energy with 3 times faster convergence speed compared to the previous schemes.

Uniform tensor clustering by jointly exploring sample affinities of various orders

Conventional clustering methods based on pairwise affinity usually suffer from the concentration effect while processing huge dimensional features yet low sample sizes data, resulting in inaccuracy to encode the sample proximity and suboptimal performance in clustering. To address this issue, we propose a unified tensor clustering method (UTC) that characterizes sample proximity using multiple samples' affinity, thereby supplementing rich spatial sample distributions to boost clustering. Specifically, we find that the triadic tensor affinity can be constructed via the Khari-Rao product of two affinity matrices. Furthermore, our early work shows that the fourth-order tensor affinity is defined by the Kronecker product. Therefore, we utilize arithmetical products, Khatri-Rao and Kronecker products, to mathematically integrate different orders of affinity into a unified tensor clustering framework. Thus, the UTC jointly learns a joint low-dimensional embedding to combine various orders. Finally, a numerical scheme is designed to solve the problem. Experiments on synthetic datasets and real-world datasets demonstrate that 1) the usage of high-order tensor affinity could provide a supplementary characterization of sample proximity to the popular affinity matrix; 2) the proposed method of UTC is affirmed to enhance clustering by exploiting different order affinities when processing high-dimensional data.

Adjoint Sampling: Highly Scalable Diffusion Samplers via Adjoint Matching

We introduce Adjoint Sampling, a highly scalable and efficient algorithm for learning diffusion processes that sample from unnormalized densities, or energy functions. It is the first on-policy approach that allows significantly more gradient updates than the number of energy evaluations and model samples, allowing us to scale to much larger problem settings than previously explored by similar methods. Our framework is theoretically grounded in stochastic optimal control and shares the same theoretical guarantees as Adjoint Matching, being able to train without the need for corrective measures that push samples towards the target distribution. We show how to incorporate key symmetries, as well as periodic boundary conditions, for modeling molecules in both cartesian and torsional coordinates. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through extensive experiments on classical energy functions, and further scale up to neural network-based energy models where we perform amortized conformer generation across many molecular systems. To encourage further research in developing highly scalable sampling methods, we plan to open source these challenging benchmarks, where successful methods can directly impact progress in computational chemistry.

PEGAsus: 3D Personalization of Geometry and Appearance

We present PEGAsus, a new framework capable of generating Personalized 3D shapes by learning shape concepts at both Geometry and Appearance levels. First, we formulate 3D shape personalization as extracting reusable, category-agnostic geometric and appearance attributes from reference shapes, and composing these attributes with text to generate novel shapes. Second, we design a progressive optimization strategy to learn shape concepts at both the geometry and appearance levels, decoupling the shape concept learning process. Third, we extend our approach to region-wise concept learning, enabling flexible concept extraction, with context-aware and context-free losses. Extensive experimental results show that PEGAsus is able to effectively extract attributes from a wide range of reference shapes and then flexibly compose these concepts with text to synthesize new shapes. This enables fine-grained control over shape generation and supports the creation of diverse, personalized results, even in challenging cross-category scenarios. Both quantitative and qualitative experiments demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing state-of-the-art solutions.

RankUp: Towards High-rank Representations for Large Scale Advertising Recommender Systems

The scaling laws for recommender systems have been increasingly validated, where MetaFormer-based architectures consistently benefit from increased model depth, hidden dimensionality, and user behavior sequence length. However, whether representation capacity scales proportionally with parameter growth remains largely unexplored. Prior studies on RankMixer reveal that the effective rank of token representations exhibits a damped oscillatory trajectory across layers, failing to increase consistently with depth and even degrading in deeper layers. Motivated by this observation, we propose \textbf{RankUp}, an architecture designed to mitigate representation collapse and enhance expressive capacity through randomized permutation splitting over sparse features, a multi-embedding paradigm, global token integration, crossed pretrained embedding tokens and task-specific token decoupling. RankUp has been fully deployed in large-scale production across Weixin Video Accounts, Official Accounts and Moments, yielding GMV improvements of 3.41\%, 4.81\% and 2.21\%, respectively.

EvoSpark: Endogenous Interactive Agent Societies for Unified Long-Horizon Narrative Evolution

Realizing endogenous narrative evolution in LLM-based multi-agent systems is hindered by the inherent stochasticity of generative emergence. In particular, long-horizon simulations suffer from social memory stacking, where conflicting relational states accumulate without resolution, and narrative-spatial dissonance, where spatial logic detaches from the evolving plot. To bridge this gap, we propose EvoSpark, a framework specifically designed to sustain logically coherent long-horizon narratives within Endogenous Interactive Agent Societies. To ensure consistency, the Stratified Narrative Memory employs a Role Socio-Evolutionary Base as living cognition, dynamically metabolizing experiences to resolve historical conflicts. Complementarily, Generative Mise-en-Scène mechanism enforces Role-Location-Plot alignment, synchronizing character presence with the narrative flow. Underpinning these is the Unified Narrative Operation Engine, which integrates an Emergent Character Grounding Protocol to transform stochastic sparking into persistent characters. This engine establishes a substrate that expands a minimal premise into an open-ended, evolving story world. Experiments demonstrate that EvoSpark significantly outperforms baselines across diverse paradigms, enabling the sustained generation of expressive and coherent narrative experiences.

The Art of Socratic Inquiry: A Framework for Proactive Template-Guided Therapeutic Conversation Generation

Proactive questioning, where therapists deliberately initiate structured, cognition-guiding inquiries, is a cornerstone of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Yet, current psychological large language models (LLMs) remain overwhelmingly reactive, defaulting to empathetic but superficial responses that fail to surface latent beliefs or guide behavioral change. To bridge this gap, we propose the \textbf{Socratic Inquiry Framework (SIF)}, a lightweight, plug-and-play therapeutic intent planner that transforms LLMs from passive listeners into active cognitive guides. SIF decouples \textbf{when to ask} (via Strategy Anchoring) from \textbf{what to ask} (via Template Retrieval), enabling context-aware, theory-grounded questioning without end-to-end retraining. Complementing SIF, we introduce \textbf{Socratic-QA}, a high-quality dataset of strategy-aligned Socratic sequences that provides explicit supervision for proactive reasoning. Experiments show that SIF significantly enhances proactive questioning frequency, conversational depth, and therapeutic alignment, marking a clear shift from reactive comfort to proactive exploration. Our work establishes a new paradigm for psychologically informed LLMs: not just to respond, but to guide.

Distributed 3D Leader-Follower Formation Control with Field-of-View Safety via Control Barrier Functions

This letter proposes a distributed 3D leader-follower formation (3D-LFF) control framework for multi-UAV systems that achieves formation tracking while enforcing perception safety constraints. Maintaining safe, vision-based 3D-LFF is challenging because onboard cameras impose strict Field-of-View (FOV) limitations, and demanding formation commands can drive the leader outside the follower's camera frustum, resulting in loss of visibility. To address this issue, we develop a perception-aware safe control architecture that guarantees visibility by construction. First, we derive a relative kinematic model in a line-of-sight coordinate representation and design a distributed 3D-LFF tracking controller using only locally available relative states. Next, we embed the nominal formation controller within a Control Barrier Function-based Quadratic Program (CBF-QP) safety filter that minimally modifies the commanded velocities to maintain the leader inside the follower's camera frustum while preserving formation tracking whenever feasible. Gazebo simulations and Crazyflie hardware experiments validate the proposed approach, demonstrating accurate formation tracking and effective FOV enforcement, including scenarios in which the nominal desired formation conflicts with visibility constraints.

Bridging Data Trials and Task Barriers: A Unified Framework for Sketch Biometric Identification

Different from existing cross-modality identification tasks (e.g., heterogeneous face recognition, sketch re-identification, etc.), we introduce a novel yet practical setting for these related identification tasks, named \textbf{sketch biometric identification}, which aims to continually train a unified model across different data domains, even diverse identification tasks. Sketch biometric identification faces challenges, including scarce real sketch data, high annotation costs, privacy risks, and insufficient generalization ability of cross-task models. Existing methods usually rely on limited real data or single-task optimization, making it difficult to effectively address the joint challenges of cross-modality and cross-task. This paper proposes a unified framework that integrates efficient synthetic sketch generation and task-sequential continual learning. First, we design an efficient pipeline to generate a large-scale and high-quality synthetic person and face sketch data, which significantly reduces costs and avoids privacy risks. Meanwhile, we enhance the model's robustness by fusing real data. Second, we construct a universal unified framework for sketch biometric identification, which adopts a task-sequential training strategy: the model first completes sketch person re-identification learning on the person dataset; subsequently, it maintains the acquired person recognition capability through a trusted sample replay technique and seamlessly performs incremental training on the face dataset. This enables a single model to simultaneously handle the cross-task capabilities of multiple sketch biometric identification tasks. To support the study of the mentioned sketch biometric identification, we built a new large-scale benchmark, SketchUnified-BioID, with several practical evaluation protocols.

Detecting Malicious Intents in Smart Contracts with Pre-trained Programming Language Models

Malicious developer intents in smart contracts constitute significant security threats to decentralized applications, leading to substantial economic losses. Prior work introduced SmartIntentNN, a deep learning model for detecting unsafe developer intents. By combining the Universal Sentence Encoder, a K-means clustering-based intent highlighting mechanism, and a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) network, the model achieved an F1 score of 0.8633 on an evaluation set of 10,000 real-world smart contracts across ten distinct intent categories. This paper presents SmartIntentV2 (Smart Contract Intent Neural Network Version 2). The primary enhancement is the integration of a BERT-based pre-trained programming language model, which we domain-adaptively pre-train on a dataset of 16,000 real-world smart contracts using a Masked Language Modeling objective. SmartIntentV2 retains the BiLSTM-based multi-label classification network for intent detection. On the same evaluation set of 10,000 smart contracts, it achieves superior performance with an accuracy of 0.9789, precision of 0.9090, recall of 0.9476, and an F1 score of 0.9279, substantially outperforming its predecessor and other baseline models. Notably, SmartIntentV2 also delivers a 65.5% relative improvement in F1 score over GPT-4.1 on this specialized task. These results establish SmartIntentV2 as a new state-of-the-art model for smart contract intent detection.

Surface Vision Mamba: Leveraging Bidirectional State Space Model for Efficient Spherical Manifold Representation

Attention-based methods have demonstrated exceptional performance in modelling long-range dependencies on spherical cortical surfaces, surpassing traditional Geometric Deep Learning (GDL) models. However, their extensive inference time and high memory demands pose challenges for application to large datasets with limited computing resources. Inspired by the state space model in computer vision, we introduce the attention-free Vision Mamba (Vim) to spherical surfaces, presenting a domain-agnostic architecture for analyzing data on spherical manifolds. Our method achieves surface patching by representing spherical data as a sequence of triangular patches derived from a subdivided icosphere. The proposed Surface Vision Mamba (SiM) is evaluated on multiple neurodevelopmental phenotype regression tasks using cortical surface metrics from neonatal brains. Experimental results demonstrate that SiM outperforms both attention- and GDL-based methods, delivering 4.8 times faster inference and achieving 91.7% lower memory consumption compared to the Surface Vision Transformer (SiT) under the Ico-4 grid partitioning. Every Step Evolves: Scaling Reinforcement Learning for Trillion-Scale Thinking Model

We present Ring-1T, the first open-source, state-of-the-art thinking model with a trillion-scale parameter. It features 1 trillion total parameters and activates approximately 50 billion per token. Training such models at a trillion-parameter scale introduces unprecedented challenges, including train-inference misalignment, inefficiencies in rollout processing, and bottlenecks in the RL system. To address these, we pioneer three interconnected innovations: (1) IcePop stabilizes RL training via token-level discrepancy masking and clipping, resolving instability from training-inference mismatches; (2) C3PO++ improves resource utilization for long rollouts under a token budget by dynamically partitioning them, thereby obtaining high time efficiency; and (3) ASystem, a high-performance RL framework designed to overcome the systemic bottlenecks that impede trillion-parameter model training. Ring-1T delivers breakthrough results across critical benchmarks: 93.4 on AIME-2025, 86.72 on HMMT-2025, 2088 on CodeForces, and 55.94 on ARC-AGI-1. Notably, it attains a silver medal-level result on the IMO-2025, underscoring its exceptional reasoning capabilities. By releasing the complete 1T parameter MoE model to the community, we provide the research community with direct access to cutting-edge reasoning capabilities. This contribution marks a significant milestone in democratizing large-scale reasoning intelligence and establishes a new baseline for open-source model performance.

SynPO: Synergizing Descriptiveness and Preference Optimization for Video Detailed Captioning

Fine-grained video captioning aims to generate detailed, temporally coherent descriptions of video content. However, existing methods struggle to capture subtle video dynamics and rich detailed information. In this paper, we leverage preference learning to enhance the performance of vision-language models in fine-grained video captioning, while mitigating several limitations inherent to direct preference optimization (DPO). First, we propose a pipeline for constructing preference pairs that leverages the intrinsic properties of VLMs along with partial assistance from large language models, achieving an optimal balance between cost and data quality. Second, we propose Synergistic Preference Optimization (SynPO), a novel optimization method offering significant advantages over DPO and its variants. SynPO prevents negative preferences from dominating the optimization, explicitly preserves the model's language capability to avoid deviation of the optimization objective, and improves training efficiency by eliminating the need for the reference model. We extensively evaluate SynPO not only on video captioning benchmarks (e.g., VDC, VDD, VATEX) but also across well-established NLP tasks, including general language understanding and preference evaluation, using diverse pretrained models. Two-Stage Learning of Stabilizing Neural Controllers via Zubov Sampling and Iterative Domain Expansion

Learning-based neural network (NN) control policies have shown impressive empirical performance. However, obtaining stability guarantees and estimates of the region of attraction of these learned neural controllers is challenging due to the lack of stable and scalable training and verification algorithms. Although previous works in this area have achieved great success, much conservatism remains in their frameworks. In this work, we propose a novel two-stage training framework to jointly synthesize a controller and a Lyapunov function for continuous-time systems. By leveraging a Zubov-inspired region of attraction characterization to directly estimate stability boundaries, we propose a novel training-data sampling strategy and a domain-updating mechanism that significantly reduces the conservatism in training. Moreover, unlike existing works on continuous-time systems that rely on an SMT solver to formally verify the Lyapunov condition, we extend state-of-the-art neural network verifier $α,\!β$-CROWN with the capability of performing automatic bound propagation through the Jacobian of dynamical systems and a novel verification scheme that avoids expensive bisection. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we conduct numerical experiments by synthesizing and verifying controllers on several challenging nonlinear systems across multiple dimensions. We show that our training can yield region of attractions with volume $5 - 1.5\cdot 10^{5}$ times larger compared to the baselines, and our verification on continuous systems can be up to $40-10{,}000$ times faster compared to the traditional SMT solver dReal. Diffusion-Based Adversarial Sample Generation for Improved Stealthiness and Controllability

Neural networks are known to be susceptible to adversarial samples: small variations of natural examples crafted to deliberately mislead the models. While they can be easily generated using gradient-based techniques in digital and physical scenarios, they often differ greatly from the actual data distribution of natural images, resulting in a trade-off between strength and stealthiness. In this paper, we propose a novel framework dubbed Diffusion-Based Projected Gradient Descent (Diff-PGD) for generating realistic adversarial samples. By exploiting a gradient guided by a diffusion model, Diff-PGD ensures that adversarial samples remain close to the original data distribution while maintaining their effectiveness. Moreover, our framework can be easily customized for specific tasks such as digital attacks, physical-world attacks, and style-based attacks. Compared with existing methods for generating natural-style adversarial samples, our framework enables the separation of optimizing adversarial loss from other surrogate losses (e.g., content/smoothness/style loss), making it more stable and controllable. Finally, we demonstrate that the samples generated using Diff-PGD have better transferability and anti-purification power than traditional gradient-based methods. Independent Encoder for Deep Hierarchical Unsupervised Image-to-Image Translation

The main challenges of image-to-image (I2I) translation are to make the translated image realistic and retain as much information from the source domain as possible. To address this issue, we propose a novel architecture, termed as IEGAN, which removes the encoder of each network and introduces an encoder that is independent of other networks. Compared with previous models, it embodies three advantages of our model: Firstly, it is more directly and comprehensively to grasp image information since the encoder no longer receives loss from generator and discriminator. Secondly, the independent encoder allows each network to focus more on its own goal which makes the translated image more realistic. Thirdly, the reduction in the number of encoders performs more unified image representation. However, when the independent encoder applies two down-sampling blocks, it's hard to extract semantic information. To tackle this problem, we propose deep and shallow information space containing characteristic and semantic information, which can guide the model to translate high-quality images under the task with significant shape or texture change. We compare IEGAN with other previous models, and conduct researches on semantic information consistency and component ablation at the same time. SM-SGE: A Self-Supervised Multi-Scale Skeleton Graph Encoding Framework for Person Re-Identification

Person re-identification via 3D skeletons is an emerging topic with great potential in security-critical applications. Existing methods typically learn body and motion features from the body-joint trajectory, whereas they lack a systematic way to model body structure and underlying relations of body components beyond the scale of body joints. In this paper, we for the first time propose a Self-supervised Multi-scale Skeleton Graph Encoding (SM-SGE) framework that comprehensively models human body, component relations, and skeleton dynamics from unlabeled skeleton graphs of various scales to learn an effective skeleton representation for person Re-ID. Specifically, we first devise multi-scale skeleton graphs with coarse-to-fine human body partitions, which enables us to model body structure and skeleton dynamics at multiple levels. Second, to mine inherent correlations between body components in skeletal motion, we propose a multi-scale graph relation network to learn structural relations between adjacent body-component nodes and collaborative relations among nodes of different scales, so as to capture more discriminative skeleton graph features. Last, we propose a novel multi-scale skeleton reconstruction mechanism to enable our framework to encode skeleton dynamics and high-level semantics from unlabeled skeleton graphs, which encourages learning a discriminative skeleton representation for person Re-ID. Extensive experiments show that SM-SGE outperforms most state-of-the-art skeleton-based methods. We further demonstrate its effectiveness on 3D skeleton data estimated from large-scale RGB videos. Multi-Level Graph Encoding with Structural-Collaborative Relation Learning for Skeleton-Based Person Re-Identification

Skeleton-based person re-identification (Re-ID) is an emerging open topic providing great value for safety-critical applications. Existing methods typically extract hand-crafted features or model skeleton dynamics from the trajectory of body joints, while they rarely explore valuable relation information contained in body structure or motion. To fully explore body relations, we construct graphs to model human skeletons from different levels, and for the first time propose a Multi-level Graph encoding approach with Structural-Collaborative Relation learning (MG-SCR) to encode discriminative graph features for person Re-ID. Specifically, considering that structurally-connected body components are highly correlated in a skeleton, we first propose a multi-head structural relation layer to learn different relations of neighbor body-component nodes in graphs, which helps aggregate key correlative features for effective node representations. Second, inspired by the fact that body-component collaboration in walking usually carries recognizable patterns, we propose a cross-level collaborative relation layer to infer collaboration between different level components, so as to capture more discriminative skeleton graph features. Finally, to enhance graph dynamics encoding, we propose a novel self-supervised sparse sequential prediction task for model pre-training, which facilitates encoding high-level graph semantics for person Re-ID. MG-SCR outperforms state-of-the-art skeleton-based methods, and it achieves superior performance to many multi-modal methods that utilize extra RGB or depth features.
