Learning to Fast Unrank in Collaborative Filtering Recommendation

Junpeng Zhao, Lin Li, Ming Li et al.

Modern data-driven recommendation systems risk memorizing sensitive user behavioral patterns, raising privacy concerns. Existing recommendation unlearning methods, while capable of removing target data influence, suffer from inefficient unlearning speed and degraded performance, failing to meet real-time unlearning demands. Considering the ranking-oriented nature of recommendation systems, we present unranking, the process of reducing the ranking positions of target items while ensuring the formal guarantees of recommendation unlearning. To achieve efficient unranking, we propose Learning to Fast Unrank in Collaborative Filtering Recommendation (L2UnRank), which operates through three key stages: (a) identifying the influenced scope via interaction-based p-hop propagation, (b) computing structural and semantic influences for entities within this scope, and (c) performing efficient, ranking-aware parameter updates guided by influence information. Extensive experiments across multiple datasets and backbone models demonstrate L2UnRank's model-agnostic nature, achieving state-of-the-art unranking effectiveness and maintaining recommendation quality comparable to retraining, while also delivering a 50x speedup over existing methods. Codes are available at https://github.com/Juniper42/L2UnRank.

Unsupervised Structural Scene Decomposition via Foreground-Aware Slot Attention with Pseudo-Mask Guidance

Huankun Sheng, Ming Li, Yixiang Wei et al.

Recent advances in object-centric representation learning have shown that slot attention-based methods can effectively decompose visual scenes into object slot representations without supervision. However, existing approaches typically process foreground and background regions indiscriminately, often resulting in background interference and suboptimal instance discovery performance on real-world data. To address this limitation, we propose Foreground-Aware Slot Attention (FASA), a two-stage framework that explicitly separates foreground from background to enable precise object discovery. In the first stage, FASA performs a coarse scene decomposition to distinguish foreground from background regions through a dual-slot competition mechanism. These slots are initialized via a clustering-based strategy, yielding well-structured representations of salient regions. In the second stage, we introduce a masked slot attention mechanism where the first slot captures the background while the remaining slots compete to represent individual foreground objects. To further address over-segmentation of foreground objects, we incorporate pseudo-mask guidance derived from a patch affinity graph constructed with self-supervised image features to guide the learning of foreground slots. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that FASA consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods, validating the effectiveness of explicit foreground modeling and pseudo-mask guidance for robust scene decomposition and object-coherent representation. Code will be made publicly available.

Voice EHR: Introducing Multimodal Audio Data for Health

James Anibal, Hannah Huth, Ming Li et al.

Artificial intelligence (AI) models trained on audio data may have the potential to rapidly perform clinical tasks, enhancing medical decision-making and potentially improving outcomes through early detection. Existing technologies depend on limited datasets collected with expensive recording equipment in high-income countries, which challenges deployment in resource-constrained, high-volume settings where audio data may have a profound impact on health equity. This report introduces a novel data type and a corresponding collection system that captures health data through guided questions using only a mobile/web application. The app facilitates the collection of an audio electronic health record (Voice EHR) which may contain complex biomarkers of health from conventional voice/respiratory features, speech patterns, and spoken language with semantic meaning and longitudinal context, potentially compensating for the typical limitations of unimodal clinical datasets. This report presents the application used for data collection, initial experiments on data quality, and case studies which demonstrate the potential of voice EHR to advance the scalability/diversity of audio AI.

Monotonic Learning in the PAC Framework: A New Perspective

Ming Li, Chenyi Zhang, Qin Li

Monotone learning describes learning processes in which expected performance consistently improves as the amount of training data increases. However, recent studies challenge this conventional wisdom, revealing significant gaps in the understanding of generalization in machine learning. Addressing these gaps is crucial for advancing the theoretical foundations of the field. In this work, we utilize Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) learning theory to construct a theoretical risk distribution that approximates a learning algorithm's actual performance. We rigorously prove that this theoretical distribution exhibits monotonicity as sample sizes increase. We identify two scenarios under which deterministic algorithms based on Empirical Risk Minimization (ERM) are monotone: (1) the hypothesis space is finite, or (2) the hypothesis space has finite VC-dimension. Experiments on two classical learning problems validate our findings by demonstrating that the monotonicity of the algorithms' generalization error is guaranteed, as its theoretical risk upper bound monotonically converges to 0.

Low-Latency Online Speaker Diarization with Graph-Based Label Generation

Yucong Zhang, Qinjian Lin, Weiqing Wang et al.

This paper introduces an online speaker diarization system that can handle long-time audio with low latency. We enable Agglomerative Hierarchy Clustering (AHC) to work in an online fashion by introducing a label matching algorithm. This algorithm solves the inconsistency between output labels and hidden labels that are generated each turn. To ensure the low latency in the online setting, we introduce a variant of AHC, namely chkpt-AHC, to cluster the speakers. In addition, we propose a speaker embedding graph to exploit a graph-based re-clustering method, further improving the performance. In the experiment, we evaluate our systems on both DIHARD3 and VoxConverse datasets. The experimental results show that our proposed online systems have better performance than our baseline online system and have comparable performance to our offline systems. We find out that the framework combining the chkpt-AHC method and the label matching algorithm works well in the online setting. Moreover, the chkpt-AHC method greatly reduces the time cost, while the graph-based re-clustering method helps improve the performance.

Securing a UAV Using Individual Characteristics From an EEG Signal

Ashutosh Singandhupe, Hung Manh La, David Feil-Seifer et al.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained much attention in recent years for both commercial and military applications. The progress in this field has gained much popularity and the research has encompassed various fields of scientific domain. Cyber securing a UAV communication has been one of the active research field since the attack on Predator UAV video stream hijacking in 2009. Since UAVs rely heavily on on-board autopilot to function, it is important to develop an autopilot system that is robust to possible cyber attacks. In this work, we present a biometric system to encrypt the UAV communication by generating a key which is derived from Beta component of the EEG signal of a user. We have developed a safety mechanism that would be activated in case the communication of the UAV from the ground control station gets attacked. This system has been validated on a commercial UAV under malicious attack conditions during which we implement a procedure where the UAV return safely to a "home" position.
