PosterLayout: A New Benchmark and Approach for Content-aware Visual-Textual Presentation Layout

HsiaoYuan Hsu, Xiangteng He, Yuxin Peng et al.

Content-aware visual-textual presentation layout aims at arranging spatial space on the given canvas for pre-defined elements, including text, logo, and underlay, which is a key to automatic template-free creative graphic design. In practical applications, e.g., poster designs, the canvas is originally non-empty, and both inter-element relationships as well as inter-layer relationships should be concerned when generating a proper layout. A few recent works deal with them simultaneously, but they still suffer from poor graphic performance, such as a lack of layout variety or spatial non-alignment. Since content-aware visual-textual presentation layout is a novel task, we first construct a new dataset named PosterLayout, which consists of 9,974 poster-layout pairs and 905 images, i.e., non-empty canvases. It is more challenging and useful for greater layout variety, domain diversity, and content diversity. Then, we propose design sequence formation (DSF) that reorganizes elements in layouts to imitate the design processes of human designers, and a novel CNN-LSTM-based conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) is presented to generate proper layouts. Specifically, the discriminator is design-sequence-aware and will supervise the "design" process of the generator. Experimental results verify the usefulness of the new benchmark and the effectiveness of the proposed approach, which achieves the best performance by generating suitable layouts for diverse canvases.

Progressively Generating Better Initial Guesses Towards Next Stages for High-Quality Human Motion Prediction

Tiezheng Ma, Yongwei Nie, Chengjiang Long et al.

This paper presents a high-quality human motion prediction method that accurately predicts future human poses given observed ones. Our method is based on the observation that a good initial guess of the future poses is very helpful in improving the forecasting accuracy. This motivates us to propose a novel two-stage prediction framework, including an init-prediction network that just computes the good guess and then a formal-prediction network that predicts the target future poses based on the guess. More importantly, we extend this idea further and design a multi-stage prediction framework where each stage predicts initial guess for the next stage, which brings more performance gain. To fulfill the prediction task at each stage, we propose a network comprising Spatial Dense Graph Convolutional Networks (S-DGCN) and Temporal Dense Graph Convolutional Networks (T-DGCN). Alternatively executing the two networks helps extract spatiotemporal features over the global receptive field of the whole pose sequence. All the above design choices cooperating together make our method outperform previous approaches by large margins: 6%-7% on Human3.6M, 5%-10% on CMU-MoCap, and 13%-16% on 3DPW.

Graph-Adaptive Pruning for Efficient Inference of Convolutional Neural Networks

Mengdi Wang, Qing Zhang, Jun Yang et al.

In this work, we propose a graph-adaptive pruning (GAP) method for efficient inference of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In this method, the network is viewed as a computational graph, in which the vertices denote the computation nodes and edges represent the information flow. Through topology analysis, GAP is capable of adapting to different network structures, especially the widely used cross connections and multi-path data flow in recent novel convolutional models. The models can be adaptively pruned at vertex-level as well as edge-level without any post-processing, thus GAP can directly get practical model compression and inference speed-up. Moreover, it does not need any customized computation library or hardware support. Finetuning is conducted after pruning to restore the model performance. In the finetuning step, we adopt a self-taught knowledge distillation (KD) strategy by utilizing information from the original model, through which, the performance of the optimized model can be sufficiently improved, without introduction of any other teacher model. Experimental results show the proposed GAP can achieve promising result to make inference more efficient, e.g., for ResNeXt-29 on CIFAR10, it can get 13X model compression and 4.3X practical speed-up with marginal loss of accuracy.
