We study a challenging task, conditional human motion generation, which produces plausible human motion sequences according to various conditional inputs, such as action classes or textual descriptors. Since human motions are highly diverse and have a property of quite different distribution from conditional modalities, such as textual descriptors in natural languages, it is hard to learn a probabilistic mapping from the desired conditional modality to the human motion sequences. Besides, the raw motion data from the motion capture system might be redundant in sequences and contain noises; directly modeling the joint distribution over the raw motion sequences and conditional modalities would need a heavy computational overhead and might result in artifacts introduced by the captured noises. To learn a better representation of the various human motion sequences, we first design a powerful Variational AutoEncoder (VAE) and arrive at a representative and low-dimensional latent code for a human motion sequence. Then, instead of using a diffusion model to establish the connections between the raw motion sequences and the conditional inputs, we perform a diffusion process on the motion latent space. Our proposed Motion Latent-based Diffusion model (MLD) could produce vivid motion sequences conforming to the given conditional inputs and substantially reduce the computational overhead in both the training and inference stages. Extensive experiments on various human motion generation tasks demonstrate that our MLD achieves significant improvements over the state-of-the-art methods among extensive human motion generation tasks, with two orders of magnitude faster than previous diffusion models on raw motion sequences.

A Large-Scale Outdoor Multi-modal Dataset and Benchmark for Novel View Synthesis and Implicit Scene ReconstructionChongshan Lu, Fukun Yin, Xin Chen et al. · deepmind
Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) has achieved impressive results in single object scene reconstruction and novel view synthesis, which have been demonstrated on many single modality and single object focused indoor scene datasets like DTU, BMVS, and NeRF Synthetic. However, the study of NeRF on large-scale outdoor scene reconstruction is still limited, as there is no unified outdoor scene dataset for large-scale NeRF evaluation due to expensive data acquisition and calibration costs. In this paper, we propose a large-scale outdoor multi-modal dataset, OMMO dataset, containing complex land objects and scenes with calibrated images, point clouds and prompt annotations. Meanwhile, a new benchmark for several outdoor NeRF-based tasks is established, such as novel view synthesis, surface reconstruction, and multi-modal NeRF. To create the dataset, we capture and collect a large number of real fly-view videos and select high-quality and high-resolution clips from them. Then we design a quality review module to refine images, remove low-quality frames and fail-to-calibrate scenes through a learning-based automatic evaluation plus manual review. Finally, a number of volunteers are employed to add the text descriptions for each scene and key-frame to meet the potential multi-modal requirements in the future. Compared with existing NeRF datasets, our dataset contains abundant real-world urban and natural scenes with various scales, camera trajectories, and lighting conditions. Experiments show that our dataset can benchmark most state-of-the-art NeRF methods on different tasks. We will release the dataset and model weights very soon.

Learning Variational Motion Prior for Video-based Motion CaptureXin Chen, Zhuo Su, Lingbo Yang et al. · tencent-ai
Motion capture from a monocular video is fundamental and crucial for us humans to naturally experience and interact with each other in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). However, existing methods still struggle with challenging cases involving self-occlusion and complex poses due to the lack of effective motion prior modeling. In this paper, we present a novel variational motion prior (VMP) learning approach for video-based motion capture to resolve the above issue. Instead of directly building the correspondence between the video and motion domain, We propose to learn a generic latent space for capturing the prior distribution of all natural motions, which serve as the basis for subsequent video-based motion capture tasks. To improve the generalization capacity of prior space, we propose a transformer-based variational autoencoder pretrained over marker-based 3D mocap data, with a novel style-mapping block to boost the generation quality. Afterward, a separate video encoder is attached to the pretrained motion generator for end-to-end fine-tuning over task-specific video datasets. Compared to existing motion prior models, our VMP model serves as a motion rectifier that can effectively reduce temporal jittering and failure modes in frame-wise pose estimation, leading to temporally stable and visually realistic motion capture results. Furthermore, our VMP-based framework models motion at sequence level and can directly generate motion clips in the forward pass, achieving real-time motion capture during inference. Extensive experiments over both public datasets and in-the-wild videos have demonstrated the efficacy and generalization capability of our framework.

The evolution of Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and GPT-4 has sparked discussions on the advent of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). However, replicating such advancements in open-source models has been challenging. This paper introduces InternLM2, an open-source LLM that outperforms its predecessors in comprehensive evaluations across 6 dimensions and 30 benchmarks, long-context modeling, and open-ended subjective evaluations through innovative pre-training and optimization techniques. The pre-training process of InternLM2 is meticulously detailed, highlighting the preparation of diverse data types including text, code, and long-context data. InternLM2 efficiently captures long-term dependencies, initially trained on 4k tokens before advancing to 32k tokens in pre-training and fine-tuning stages, exhibiting remarkable performance on the 200k ``Needle-in-a-Haystack" test. InternLM2 is further aligned using Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) and a novel Conditional Online Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (COOL RLHF) strategy that addresses conflicting human preferences and reward hacking. By releasing InternLM2 models in different training stages and model sizes, we provide the community with insights into the model's evolution.

VQ-NeRF: Vector Quantization Enhances Implicit Neural RepresentationsYiying Yang, Wen Liu, Fukun Yin et al.
Recent advancements in implicit neural representations have contributed to high-fidelity surface reconstruction and photorealistic novel view synthesis. However, the computational complexity inherent in these methodologies presents a substantial impediment, constraining the attainable frame rates and resolutions in practical applications. In response to this predicament, we propose VQ-NeRF, an effective and efficient pipeline for enhancing implicit neural representations via vector quantization. The essence of our method involves reducing the sampling space of NeRF to a lower resolution and subsequently reinstating it to the original size utilizing a pre-trained VAE decoder, thereby effectively mitigating the sampling time bottleneck encountered during rendering. Although the codebook furnishes representative features, reconstructing fine texture details of the scene remains challenging due to high compression rates. To overcome this constraint, we design an innovative multi-scale NeRF sampling scheme that concurrently optimizes the NeRF model at both compressed and original scales to enhance the network's ability to preserve fine details. Furthermore, we incorporate a semantic loss function to improve the geometric fidelity and semantic coherence of our 3D reconstructions. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our model in achieving the optimal trade-off between rendering quality and efficiency. Evaluation on the DTU, BlendMVS, and H3DS datasets confirms the superior performance of our approach.
DRU-net: An Efficient Deep Convolutional Neural Network for Medical Image SegmentationMina Jafari, Dorothee Auer, Susan Francis et al.
Residual network (ResNet) and densely connected network (DenseNet) have significantly improved the training efficiency and performance of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) mainly for object classification tasks. In this paper, we propose an efficient network architecture by considering advantages of both networks. The proposed method is integrated into an encoder-decoder DCNN model for medical image segmentation. Our method adds additional skip connections compared to ResNet but uses significantly fewer model parameters than DenseNet. We evaluate the proposed method on a public dataset (ISIC 2018 grand-challenge) for skin lesion segmentation and a local brain MRI dataset. In comparison with ResNet-based, DenseNet-based and attention network (AttnNet) based methods within the same encoder-decoder network structure, our method achieves significantly higher segmentation accuracy with fewer number of model parameters than DenseNet and AttnNet. The code is available on GitHub (GitHub link: https://github.com/MinaJf/DRU-net).

MikuDance: Animating Character Art with Mixed Motion DynamicsJiaxu Zhang, Xianfang Zeng, Xin Chen et al.
We propose MikuDance, a diffusion-based pipeline incorporating mixed motion dynamics to animate stylized character art. MikuDance consists of two key techniques: Mixed Motion Modeling and Mixed-Control Diffusion, to address the challenges of high-dynamic motion and reference-guidance misalignment in character art animation. Specifically, a Scene Motion Tracking strategy is presented to explicitly model the dynamic camera in pixel-wise space, enabling unified character-scene motion modeling. Building on this, the Mixed-Control Diffusion implicitly aligns the scale and body shape of diverse characters with motion guidance, allowing flexible control of local character motion. Subsequently, a Motion-Adaptive Normalization module is incorporated to effectively inject global scene motion, paving the way for comprehensive character art animation. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness and generalizability of MikuDance across various character art and motion guidance, consistently producing high-quality animations with remarkable motion dynamics.

Neural Free-Viewpoint Performance Rendering under Complex Human-object InteractionsGuoxing Sun, Xin Chen, Yizhang Chen et al.
4D reconstruction of human-object interaction is critical for immersive VR/AR experience and human activity understanding. Recent advances still fail to recover fine geometry and texture results from sparse RGB inputs, especially under challenging human-object interactions scenarios. In this paper, we propose a neural human performance capture and rendering system to generate both high-quality geometry and photo-realistic texture of both human and objects under challenging interaction scenarios in arbitrary novel views, from only sparse RGB streams. To deal with complex occlusions raised by human-object interactions, we adopt a layer-wise scene decoupling strategy and perform volumetric reconstruction and neural rendering of the human and object. Specifically, for geometry reconstruction, we propose an interaction-aware human-object capture scheme that jointly considers the human reconstruction and object reconstruction with their correlations. Occlusion-aware human reconstruction and robust human-aware object tracking are proposed for consistent 4D human-object dynamic reconstruction. For neural texture rendering, we propose a layer-wise human-object rendering scheme, which combines direction-aware neural blending weight learning and spatial-temporal texture completion to provide high-resolution and photo-realistic texture results in the occluded scenarios. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach to achieve high-quality geometry and texture reconstruction in free viewpoints for challenging human-object interactions.

Two-Server Verifiable Homomorphic Secret Sharing for High-Degree PolynomialsXin Chen, Liang Feng Zhang
Homomorphic secret sharing (HSS) allows multiple input clients to secret-share their data among multiple servers such that each server is able to locally compute a function on its shares to obtain a partial result and all partial results enable the reconstruction of the function's value on the outsourced data by an output client. The existing HSS schemes for {\em high-degree} polynomials either {\em require a large number of servers} or {\em lack verifiability}, which is essential for ensuring the correctness of the outsourced computations. In this paper, we propose a two-server verifiable HSS (VHSS) model and construct a scheme that supports the computation of high-degree polynomials. The degree of the outsourced polynomials can be as high as a polynomial in the system's security parameter. Despite of using only 2 servers, our VHSS ensures that each single server learns no information about the outsourced data and no single server is able to persuade the client to output a wrong function value. Our VHSS is significantly more efficient. When computing degree-7 polynomials, our scheme could be 3-10 times faster than the previously best construction.
SportsCap: Monocular 3D Human Motion Capture and Fine-grained Understanding in Challenging Sports VideosXin Chen, Anqi Pang, Wei Yang et al.
Markerless motion capture and understanding of professional non-daily human movements is an important yet unsolved task, which suffers from complex motion patterns and severe self-occlusion, especially for the monocular setting. In this paper, we propose SportsCap -- the first approach for simultaneously capturing 3D human motions and understanding fine-grained actions from monocular challenging sports video input. Our approach utilizes the semantic and temporally structured sub-motion prior in the embedding space for motion capture and understanding in a data-driven multi-task manner. To enable robust capture under complex motion patterns, we propose an effective motion embedding module to recover both the implicit motion embedding and explicit 3D motion details via a corresponding mapping function as well as a sub-motion classifier. Based on such hybrid motion information, we introduce a multi-stream spatial-temporal Graph Convolutional Network(ST-GCN) to predict the fine-grained semantic action attributes, and adopt a semantic attribute mapping block to assemble various correlated action attributes into a high-level action label for the overall detailed understanding of the whole sequence, so as to enable various applications like action assessment or motion scoring. Comprehensive experiments on both public and our proposed datasets show that with a challenging monocular sports video input, our novel approach not only significantly improves the accuracy of 3D human motion capture, but also recovers accurate fine-grained semantic action attributes.
AutoSweep: Recovering 3D Editable Objectsfrom a Single PhotographXin Chen, Yuwei Li, Xi Luo et al.
This paper presents a fully automatic framework for extracting editable 3D objects directly from a single photograph. Unlike previous methods which recover either depth maps, point clouds, or mesh surfaces, we aim to recover 3D objects with semantic parts and can be directly edited. We base our work on the assumption that most human-made objects are constituted by parts and these parts can be well represented by generalized primitives. Our work makes an attempt towards recovering two types of primitive-shaped objects, namely, generalized cuboids and generalized cylinders. To this end, we build a novel instance-aware segmentation network for accurate part separation. Our GeoNet outputs a set of smooth part-level masks labeled as profiles and bodies. Then in a key stage, we simultaneously identify profile-body relations and recover 3D parts by sweeping the recognized profile along their body contour and jointly optimize the geometry to align with the recovered masks. Qualitative and quantitative experiments show that our algorithm can recover high quality 3D models and outperforms existing methods in both instance segmentation and 3D reconstruction. Sparse Photometric 3D Face Reconstruction Guided by Morphable ModelsXuan Cao, Zhang Chen, Anpei Chen et al.
We present a novel 3D face reconstruction technique that leverages sparse photometric stereo (PS) and latest advances on face registration/modeling from a single image. We observe that 3D morphable faces approach provides a reasonable geometry proxy for light position calibration. Specifically, we develop a robust optimization technique that can calibrate per-pixel lighting direction and illumination at a very high precision without assuming uniform surface albedos. Next, we apply semantic segmentation on input images and the geometry proxy to refine hairy vs. bare skin regions using tailored filters. Experiments on synthetic and real data show that by using a very small set of images, our technique is able to reconstruct fine geometric details such as wrinkles, eyebrows, whelks, pores, etc, comparable to and sometimes surpassing movie quality productions.
