WASE: Learning When to Attend for Speaker Extraction in Cocktail Party EnvironmentsYunzhe Hao, Jiaming Xu, Peng Zhang et al.
In the speaker extraction problem, it is found that additional information from the target speaker contributes to the tracking and extraction of the target speaker, which includes voiceprint, lip movement, facial expression, and spatial information. However, no one cares for the cue of sound onset, which has been emphasized in the auditory scene analysis and psychology. Inspired by it, we explicitly modeled the onset cue and verified the effectiveness in the speaker extraction task. We further extended to the onset/offset cues and got performance improvement. From the perspective of tasks, our onset/offset-based model completes the composite task, a complementary combination of speaker extraction and speaker-dependent voice activity detection. We also combined voiceprint with onset/offset cues. Voiceprint models voice characteristics of the target while onset/offset models the start/end information of the speech. From the perspective of auditory scene analysis, the combination of two perception cues can promote the integrity of the auditory object. The experiment results are also close to state-of-the-art performance, using nearly half of the parameters. We hope that this work will inspire communities of speech processing and psychology, and contribute to communication between them. Our code will be available in https://github.com/aispeech-lab/wase/.

AvatarBack: Back-Head Generation for Complete 3D Avatars from Front-View ImagesShiqi Xin, Xiaolin Zhang, Yanbin Liu et al.
Recent advances in Gaussian Splatting have significantly boosted the reconstruction of head avatars, enabling high-quality facial modeling by representing an 3D avatar as a collection of 3D Gaussians. However, existing methods predominantly rely on frontal-view images, leaving the back-head poorly constructed. This leads to geometric inconsistencies, structural blurring, and reduced realism in the rear regions, ultimately limiting the fidelity of reconstructed avatars. To address this challenge, we propose AvatarBack, a novel plug-and-play framework specifically designed to reconstruct complete and consistent 3D Gaussian avatars by explicitly modeling the missing back-head regions. AvatarBack integrates two core technical innovations,i.e., the Subject-specific Generator (SSG) and the Adaptive Spatial Alignment Strategy (ASA). The former leverages a generative prior to synthesize identity-consistent, plausible back-view pseudo-images from sparse frontal inputs, providing robust multi-view supervision. To achieve precise geometric alignment between these synthetic views and the 3D Gaussian representation, the later employs learnable transformation matrices optimized during training, effectively resolving inherent pose and coordinate discrepancies. Extensive experiments on NeRSemble and K-hairstyle datasets, evaluated using geometric, photometric, and GPT-4o-based perceptual metrics, demonstrate that AvatarBack significantly enhances back-head reconstruction quality while preserving frontal fidelity. Moreover, the reconstructed avatars maintain consistent visual realism under diverse motions and remain fully animatable.

Every Image Listens, Every Image Dances: Music-Driven Image AnimationZhikang Dong, Weituo Hao, Ju-Chiang Wang et al.
Image animation has become a promising area in multimodal research, with a focus on generating videos from reference images. While prior work has largely emphasized generic video generation guided by text, music-driven dance video generation remains underexplored. In this paper, we introduce MuseDance, an innovative end-to-end model that animates reference images using both music and text inputs. This dual input enables MuseDance to generate personalized videos that follow text descriptions and synchronize character movements with the music. Unlike existing approaches, MuseDance eliminates the need for complex motion guidance inputs, such as pose or depth sequences, making flexible and creative video generation accessible to users of all expertise levels. To advance research in this field, we present a new multimodal dataset comprising 2,904 dance videos with corresponding background music and text descriptions. Our approach leverages diffusion-based methods to achieve robust generalization, precise control, and temporal consistency, setting a new baseline for the music-driven image animation task.

Personalized Image Aesthetics Assessment with Rich AttributesYuzhe Yang, Liwu Xu, Leida Li et al.
Personalized image aesthetics assessment (PIAA) is challenging due to its highly subjective nature. People's aesthetic tastes depend on diversified factors, including image characteristics and subject characters. The existing PIAA databases are limited in terms of annotation diversity, especially the subject aspect, which can no longer meet the increasing demands of PIAA research. To solve the dilemma, we conduct so far, the most comprehensive subjective study of personalized image aesthetics and introduce a new Personalized image Aesthetics database with Rich Attributes (PARA), which consists of 31,220 images with annotations by 438 subjects. PARA features wealthy annotations, including 9 image-oriented objective attributes and 4 human-oriented subjective attributes. In addition, desensitized subject information, such as personality traits, is also provided to support study of PIAA and user portraits. A comprehensive analysis of the annotation data is provided and statistic study indicates that the aesthetic preferences can be mirrored by proposed subjective attributes. We also propose a conditional PIAA model by utilizing subject information as conditional prior. Experimental results indicate that the conditional PIAA model can outperform the control group, which is also the first attempt to demonstrate how image aesthetics and subject characters interact to produce the intricate personalized tastes on image aesthetics. We believe the database and the associated analysis would be useful for conducting next-generation PIAA study. Supporting Navigation of Outdoor Shopping Complexes for Visually-impaired Users through Multi-modal Data FusionArchana Paladugu, Parag S. Chandakkar, Peng Zhang et al.
Outdoor shopping complexes (OSC) are extremely difficult for people with visual impairment to navigate. Existing GPS devices are mostly designed for roadside navigation and seldom transition well into an OSC-like setting. We report our study on the challenges faced by a blind person in navigating OSC through developing a new mobile application named iExplore. We first report an exploratory study aiming at deriving specific design principles for building this system by learning the unique challenges of the problem. Then we present a methodology that can be used to derive the necessary information for the development of iExplore, followed by experimental validation of the technology by a group of visually impaired users in a local outdoor shopping center. User feedback and other experiments suggest that iExplore, while at its very initial phase, has the potential of filling a practical gap in existing assistive technologies for the visually impaired.
