Towards Better Chinese-centric Neural Machine Translation for Low-resource Languages

The last decade has witnessed enormous improvements in science and technology, stimulating the growing demand for economic and cultural exchanges in various countries. Building a neural machine translation (NMT) system has become an urgent trend, especially in the low-resource setting. However, recent work tends to study NMT systems for low-resource languages centered on English, while few works focus on low-resource NMT systems centered on other languages such as Chinese. To achieve this, the low-resource multilingual translation challenge of the 2021 iFLYTEK AI Developer Competition provides the Chinese-centric multilingual low-resource NMT tasks, where participants are required to build NMT systems based on the provided low-resource samples. In this paper, we present the winner competition system that leverages monolingual word embeddings data enhancement, bilingual curriculum learning, and contrastive re-ranking. In addition, a new Incomplete-Trust (In-trust) loss function is proposed to replace the traditional cross-entropy loss when training. The experimental results demonstrate that the implementation of these ideas leads better performance than other state-of-the-art methods. One-shot Generative Domain Adaptation in 3D GANs

3D-aware image generation necessitates extensive training data to ensure stable training and mitigate the risk of overfitting. This paper first considers a novel task known as One-shot 3D Generative Domain Adaptation (GDA), aimed at transferring a pre-trained 3D generator from one domain to a new one, relying solely on a single reference image. One-shot 3D GDA is characterized by the pursuit of specific attributes, namely, high fidelity, large diversity, cross-domain consistency, and multi-view consistency. Within this paper, we introduce 3D-Adapter, the first one-shot 3D GDA method, for diverse and faithful generation. Our approach begins by judiciously selecting a restricted weight set for fine-tuning, and subsequently leverages four advanced loss functions to facilitate adaptation. An efficient progressive fine-tuning strategy is also implemented to enhance the adaptation process. The synergy of these three technological components empowers 3D-Adapter to achieve remarkable performance, substantiated both quantitatively and qualitatively, across all desired properties of 3D GDA. Furthermore, 3D-Adapter seamlessly extends its capabilities to zero-shot scenarios, and preserves the potential for crucial tasks such as interpolation, reconstruction, and editing within the latent space of the pre-trained generator. Benchmarking Vision-Language Models on Chinese Ancient Documents: From OCR to Knowledge Reasoning

Chinese ancient documents, invaluable carriers of millennia of Chinese history and culture, hold rich knowledge across diverse fields but face challenges in digitization and understanding, i.e., traditional methods only scan images, while current Vision-Language Models (VLMs) struggle with their visual and linguistic complexity. Existing document benchmarks focus on English printed texts or simplified Chinese, leaving a gap for evaluating VLMs on ancient Chinese documents. To address this, we present AncientDoc, the first benchmark for Chinese ancient documents, designed to assess VLMs from OCR to knowledge reasoning. AncientDoc includes five tasks (page-level OCR, vernacular translation, reasoning-based QA, knowledge-based QA, linguistic variant QA) and covers 14 document types, over 100 books, and about 3,000 pages. Based on AncientDoc, we evaluate mainstream VLMs using multiple metrics, supplemented by a human-aligned large language model for scoring.

PSG: Prompt-based Sequence Generation for Acronym Extraction

Acronym extraction aims to find acronyms (i.e., short-forms) and their meanings (i.e., long-forms) from the documents, which is important for scientific document understanding (SDU@AAAI-22) tasks. Previous works are devoted to modeling this task as a paragraph-level sequence labeling problem. However, it lacks the effective use of the external knowledge, especially when the datasets are in a low-resource setting. Recently, the prompt-based method with the vast pre-trained language model can significantly enhance the performance of the low-resourced downstream tasks. In this paper, we propose a Prompt-based Sequence Generation (PSG) method for the acronym extraction task. Specifically, we design a template for prompting the extracted acronym texts with auto-regression. A position extraction algorithm is designed for extracting the position of the generated answers. The results on the acronym extraction of Vietnamese and Persian in a low-resource setting show that the proposed method outperforms all other competitive state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods.
