An Adaptive Plug-and-Play Network for Few-Shot Learning

Hao Li, Li Li, Yunmeng Huang et al.

Few-shot learning (FSL) requires a model to classify new samples after learning from only a few samples. While remarkable results are achieved in existing methods, the performance of embedding and metrics determines the upper limit of classification accuracy in FSL. The bottleneck is that deep networks and complex metrics tend to induce overfitting in FSL, making it difficult to further improve the performance. Towards this, we propose plug-and-play model-adaptive resizer (MAR) and adaptive similarity metric (ASM) without any other losses. MAR retains high-resolution details to alleviate the overfitting problem caused by data scarcity, and ASM decouples the relationship between different metrics and then fuses them into an advanced one. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method could boost existing methods on two standard dataset and a fine-grained datasets, and achieve state-of-the-art results on mini-ImageNet and tiered-ImageNet.

Corner Detection Based on Multi-directional Gabor Filters with Multi-scales

Huaqing Wang, Junfeng Jing, Ning Li et al.

Gabor wavelet is an essential tool for image analysis and computer vision tasks. Local structure tensors with multiple scales are widely used in local feature extraction. Our research indicates that the current corner detection method based on Gabor wavelets can not effectively apply to complex scenes. In this work, the capability of the Gabor function to discriminate the intensity changes of step edges, L-shaped corners, Y-shaped or T-shaped corners, X-shaped corners, and star-shaped corners are investigated. The properties of Gabor wavelets to suppress affine image transformation are investigated and obtained. Many properties for edges and corners were discovered, which prompted us to propose a new corner extraction method. To fully use the structural information from the tuned Gabor filters, a novel multi-directional structure tensor is constructed for corner detection, and a multi-scale corner measurement function is proposed to remove false candidate corners. Furthermore, we compare the proposed method with twelve current state-of-the-art methods, which exhibit optimal performance and practical application to 3D reconstruction with good application potential.

Multi-Modal Dialogue State Tracking for Playing GuessWhich Game

Wei Pang, Ruixue Duan, Jinfu Yang et al.

GuessWhich is an engaging visual dialogue game that involves interaction between a Questioner Bot (QBot) and an Answer Bot (ABot) in the context of image-guessing. In this game, QBot's objective is to locate a concealed image solely through a series of visually related questions posed to ABot. However, effectively modeling visually related reasoning in QBot's decision-making process poses a significant challenge. Current approaches either lack visual information or rely on a single real image sampled at each round as decoding context, both of which are inadequate for visual reasoning. To address this limitation, we propose a novel approach that focuses on visually related reasoning through the use of a mental model of the undisclosed image. Within this framework, QBot learns to represent mental imagery, enabling robust visual reasoning by tracking the dialogue state. The dialogue state comprises a collection of representations of mental imagery, as well as representations of the entities involved in the conversation. At each round, QBot engages in visually related reasoning using the dialogue state to construct an internal representation, generate relevant questions, and update both the dialogue state and internal representation upon receiving an answer. Our experimental results on the VisDial datasets (v0.5, 0.9, and 1.0) demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed model, as it achieves new state-of-the-art performance across all metrics and datasets, surpassing previous state-of-the-art models. Codes and datasets from our experiments are freely available at \href{https://github.com/xubuvd/GuessWhich}.

SWIPENET: Object detection in noisy underwater images

Long Chen, Feixiang Zhou, Shengke Wang et al.

In recent years, deep learning based object detection methods have achieved promising performance in controlled environments. However, these methods lack sufficient capabilities to handle underwater object detection due to these challenges: (1) images in the underwater datasets and real applications are blurry whilst accompanying severe noise that confuses the detectors and (2) objects in real applications are usually small. In this paper, we propose a novel Sample-WeIghted hyPEr Network (SWIPENET), and a robust training paradigm named Curriculum Multi-Class Adaboost (CMA), to address these two problems at the same time. Firstly, the backbone of SWIPENET produces multiple high resolution and semantic-rich Hyper Feature Maps, which significantly improve small object detection. Secondly, a novel sample-weighted detection loss function is designed for SWIPENET, which focuses on learning high weight samples and ignore learning low weight samples. Moreover, inspired by the human education process that drives the learning from easy to hard concepts, we here propose the CMA training paradigm that first trains a clean detector which is free from the influence of noisy data. Then, based on the clean detector, multiple detectors focusing on learning diverse noisy data are trained and incorporated into a unified deep ensemble of strong noise immunity. Experiments on two underwater robot picking contest datasets (URPC2017 and URPC2018) show that the proposed SWIPENET+CMA framework achieves better accuracy in object detection against several state-of-the-art approaches.
