ST-LLM: Large Language Models Are Effective Temporal LearnersRuyang Liu, Chen Li, Haoran Tang et al. · tencent-ai
Large Language Models (LLMs) have showcased impressive capabilities in text comprehension and generation, prompting research efforts towards video LLMs to facilitate human-AI interaction at the video level. However, how to effectively encode and understand videos in video-based dialogue systems remains to be solved. In this paper, we investigate a straightforward yet unexplored question: Can we feed all spatial-temporal tokens into the LLM, thus delegating the task of video sequence modeling to the LLMs? Surprisingly, this simple approach yields significant improvements in video understanding. Based upon this, we propose ST-LLM, an effective video-LLM baseline with Spatial-Temporal sequence modeling inside LLM. Furthermore, to address the overhead and stability issues introduced by uncompressed video tokens within LLMs, we develop a dynamic masking strategy with tailor-made training objectives. For particularly long videos, we have also designed a global-local input module to balance efficiency and effectiveness. Consequently, we harness LLM for proficient spatial-temporal modeling, while upholding efficiency and stability. Extensive experimental results attest to the effectiveness of our method. Through a more concise model and training pipeline, ST-LLM establishes a new state-of-the-art result on VideoChatGPT-Bench and MVBench. An Evidential Real-Time Multi-Mode Fault Diagnosis Approach Based on Broad Learning SystemChen Li, Zeyi Liu, Limin Wang et al.
Fault diagnosis is a crucial area of research in industry. Industrial processes exhibit diverse operating conditions, where data often have non-Gaussian, multi-mode, and center-drift characteristics. Data-driven approaches are currently the main focus in the field, but continuous fault classification and parameter updates of fault classifiers pose challenges for multiple operating modes and real-time settings. Thus, a pressing issue is to achieve real-time multi-mode fault diagnosis in industrial systems. In this paper, a novel approach to achieve real-time multi-mode fault diagnosis is proposed for industrial applications, which addresses this critical research problem. Our approach uses an extended evidence reasoning (ER) algorithm to fuse information and merge outputs from different base classifiers. These base classifiers based on broad learning system (BLS) are trained to ensure maximum fault diagnosis accuracy. Furthermore, pseudo-label learning is used to update model parameters in real-time. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated on the multi-mode Tennessee Eastman process dataset.

Distribution-restrained Softmax Loss for the Model RobustnessHao Wang, Chen Li, Jinzhe Jiang et al.
Recently, the robustness of deep learning models has received widespread attention, and various methods for improving model robustness have been proposed, including adversarial training, model architecture modification, design of loss functions, certified defenses, and so on. However, the principle of the robustness to attacks is still not fully understood, also the related research is still not sufficient. Here, we have identified a significant factor that affects the robustness of models: the distribution characteristics of softmax values for non-real label samples. We found that the results after an attack are highly correlated with the distribution characteristics, and thus we proposed a loss function to suppress the distribution diversity of softmax. A large number of experiments have shown that our method can improve robustness without significant time consumption.
GazeTarget360: Towards Gaze Target Estimation in 360-Degree for Robot PerceptionZhuangzhuang Dai, Vincent Gbouna Zakka, Luis J. Manso et al.
Enabling robots to understand human gaze target is a crucial step to allow capabilities in downstream tasks, for example, attention estimation and movement anticipation in real-world human-robot interactions. Prior works have addressed the in-frame target localization problem with data-driven approaches by carefully removing out-of-frame samples. Vision-based gaze estimation methods, such as OpenFace, do not effectively absorb background information in images and cannot predict gaze target in situations where subjects look away from the camera. In this work, we propose a system to address the problem of 360-degree gaze target estimation from an image in generalized visual scenes. The system, named GazeTarget360, integrates conditional inference engines of an eye-contact detector, a pre-trained vision encoder, and a multi-scale-fusion decoder. Cross validation results show that GazeTarget360 can produce accurate and reliable gaze target predictions in unseen scenarios. This makes a first-of-its-kind system to predict gaze targets from realistic camera footage which is highly efficient and deployable. SOLAR: Scalable Optimization of Large-scale Architecture for ReasoningChen Li, Yinyi Luo, Anudeep Bolimera et al.
Large Language Models excel in reasoning yet often rely on Chain-of-Thought prompts, limiting performance on tasks demanding more nuanced topological structures. We present SOLAR (Scalable Optimization of Large-scale Architecture for Reasoning), a framework that dynamically optimizes Chain-of-Thought (CoT), Tree-of-Thought (ToT), and Graph-of-Thought (GoT) topologies to boost accuracy and efficiency. Our Topological-Annotation-Generation (TAG) system automates dataset creation, annotation, and difficulty segmentation, leading to stronger post training and test-time performance. We also propose Topological-Scaling, a curriculum-learning-based approach that adaptively combines post training and inference scaling to each task. On MATH and GSM8K, SOLAR delivers notable gains: +5% accuracy with Topological Tuning, +9% with Topological Rewarding, and +10.02% with Hybrid Scaling, while reducing response length by over 5%, lowering inference latency. To further enhance efficiency, we introduce a multi-task Topological Reward Model (M-TRM) that selects both the optimal reasoning topology and final answer in a single pass, eliminating multiple single-task TRMs. Remarkably, M-TRM also surpasses all single-task TRMs, improving accuracy by +10% and rank correlation by +9%. Overall, SOLAR establishes a new benchmark for scalable, high-precision LLM reasoning and introduces a fully automated, dynamic topology competition mechanism.

TimeMachine: Fine-Grained Facial Age Editing with Identity PreservationYilin Mi, Qixin Yan, Zheng-Peng Duan et al.
With the advancement of generative models, facial image editing has made significant progress. However, achieving fine-grained age editing while preserving personal identity remains a challenging task. In this paper, we propose TimeMachine, a novel diffusion-based framework that achieves accurate age editing while keeping identity features unchanged. To enable fine-grained age editing, we inject high-precision age information into the multi-cross attention module, which explicitly separates age-related and identity-related features. This design facilitates more accurate disentanglement of age attributes, thereby allowing precise and controllable manipulation of facial aging. Furthermore, we propose an Age Classifier Guidance (ACG) module that predicts age directly in the latent space, instead of performing denoising image reconstruction during training. By employing a lightweight module to incorporate age constraints, this design enhances age editing accuracy by modest increasing training cost. Additionally, to address the lack of large-scale, high-quality facial age datasets, we construct a HFFA dataset (High-quality Fine-grained Facial-Age dataset) which contains one million high-resolution images labeled with identity and facial attributes. Experimental results demonstrate that TimeMachine achieves state-of-the-art performance in fine-grained age editing while preserving identity consistency.
Understanding the Generalization Ability of Deep Learning Algorithms: A Kernelized Renyi's Entropy PerspectiveYuxin Dong, Tieliang Gong, Hong Chen et al.
Recently, information theoretic analysis has become a popular framework for understanding the generalization behavior of deep neural networks. It allows a direct analysis for stochastic gradient/Langevin descent (SGD/SGLD) learning algorithms without strong assumptions such as Lipschitz or convexity conditions. However, the current generalization error bounds within this framework are still far from optimal, while substantial improvements on these bounds are quite challenging due to the intractability of high-dimensional information quantities. To address this issue, we first propose a novel information theoretical measure: kernelized Renyi's entropy, by utilizing operator representation in Hilbert space. It inherits the properties of Shannon's entropy and can be effectively calculated via simple random sampling, while remaining independent of the input dimension. We then establish the generalization error bounds for SGD/SGLD under kernelized Renyi's entropy, where the mutual information quantities can be directly calculated, enabling evaluation of the tightness of each intermediate step. We show that our information-theoretical bounds depend on the statistics of the stochastic gradients evaluated along with the iterates, and are rigorously tighter than the current state-of-the-art (SOTA) results. The theoretical findings are also supported by large-scale empirical studies1.

Generalization Study of Quantum Neural NetworkJinZhe Jiang, Xin Zhang, Chen Li et al.
Generalization is an important feature of neural network, and there have been many studies on it. Recently, with the development of quantum compu-ting, it brings new opportunities. In this paper, we studied a class of quantum neural network constructed by quantum gate. In this model, we mapped the feature data to a quantum state in Hilbert space firstly, and then implement unitary evolution on it, in the end, we can get the classification result by im-plement measurement on the quantum state. Since all the operations in quan-tum neural networks are unitary, the parameters constitute a hypersphere of Hilbert space. Compared with traditional neural network, the parameter space is flatter. Therefore, it is not easy to fall into local optimum, which means the quantum neural networks have better generalization. In order to validate our proposal, we evaluated our model on three public datasets, the results demonstrated that our model has better generalization than the classical neu-ral network with the same structure.

BIGPATENT: A Large-Scale Dataset for Abstractive and Coherent SummarizationEva Sharma, Chen Li, Lu Wang
Most existing text summarization datasets are compiled from the news domain, where summaries have a flattened discourse structure. In such datasets, summary-worthy content often appears in the beginning of input articles. Moreover, large segments from input articles are present verbatim in their respective summaries. These issues impede the learning and evaluation of systems that can understand an article's global content structure as well as produce abstractive summaries with high compression ratio. In this work, we present a novel dataset, BIGPATENT, consisting of 1.3 million records of U.S. patent documents along with human written abstractive summaries. Compared to existing summarization datasets, BIGPATENT has the following properties: i) summaries contain a richer discourse structure with more recurring entities, ii) salient content is evenly distributed in the input, and iii) lesser and shorter extractive fragments are present in the summaries. Finally, we train and evaluate baselines and popular learning models on BIGPATENT to shed light on new challenges and motivate future directions for summarization research.
