Implicit Sample Extension for Unsupervised Person Re-Identification

Xinyu Zhang, Dongdong Li, Zhigang Wang et al.

Most existing unsupervised person re-identification (Re-ID) methods use clustering to generate pseudo labels for model training. Unfortunately, clustering sometimes mixes different true identities together or splits the same identity into two or more sub clusters. Training on these noisy clusters substantially hampers the Re-ID accuracy. Due to the limited samples in each identity, we suppose there may lack some underlying information to well reveal the accurate clusters. To discover these information, we propose an Implicit Sample Extension (\OurWholeMethod) method to generate what we call support samples around the cluster boundaries. Specifically, we generate support samples from actual samples and their neighbouring clusters in the embedding space through a progressive linear interpolation (PLI) strategy. PLI controls the generation with two critical factors, i.e., 1) the direction from the actual sample towards its K-nearest clusters and 2) the degree for mixing up the context information from the K-nearest clusters. Meanwhile, given the support samples, ISE further uses a label-preserving loss to pull them towards their corresponding actual samples, so as to compact each cluster. Consequently, ISE reduces the "sub and mixed" clustering errors, thus improving the Re-ID performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is effective and achieves state-of-the-art performance for unsupervised person Re-ID. DisCO: Portrait Distortion Correction with Perspective-Aware 3D GANs

Zhixiang Wang, Yu-Lun Liu, Jia-Bin Huang et al.

Close-up facial images captured at short distances often suffer from perspective distortion, resulting in exaggerated facial features and unnatural/unattractive appearances. We propose a simple yet effective method for correcting perspective distortions in a single close-up face. We first perform GAN inversion using a perspective-distorted input facial image by jointly optimizing the camera intrinsic/extrinsic parameters and face latent code. To address the ambiguity of joint optimization, we develop starting from a short distance, optimization scheduling, reparametrizations, and geometric regularization. Re-rendering the portrait at a proper focal length and camera distance effectively corrects perspective distortions and produces more natural-looking results. Our experiments show that our method compares favorably against previous approaches qualitatively and quantitatively. We showcase numerous examples validating the applicability of our method on in-the-wild portrait photos. We will release our code and the evaluation protocol to facilitate future work.

Robust Calibrate Proxy Loss for Deep Metric Learning

Xinyue Li, Jian Wang, Wei Song et al.

The mainstream researche in deep metric learning can be divided into two genres: proxy-based and pair-based methods. Proxy-based methods have attracted extensive attention due to the lower training complexity and fast network convergence. However, these methods have limitations as the poxy optimization is done by network, which makes it challenging for the proxy to accurately represent the feature distrubtion of the real class of data. In this paper, we propose a Calibrate Proxy (CP) structure, which uses the real sample information to improve the similarity calculation in proxy-based loss and introduces a calibration loss to constraint the proxy optimization towards the center of the class features. At the same time, we set a small number of proxies for each class to alleviate the impact of intra-class differences on retrieval performance. The effectiveness of our method is evaluated by extensive experiments on three public datasets and multiple synthetic label-noise datasets. The results show that our approach can effectively improve the performance of commonly used proxy-based losses on both regular and noisy datasets.

DSL-FIQA: Assessing Facial Image Quality via Dual-Set Degradation Learning and Landmark-Guided Transformer

Wei-Ting Chen, Gurunandan Krishnan, Qiang Gao et al.

Generic Face Image Quality Assessment (GFIQA) evaluates the perceptual quality of facial images, which is crucial in improving image restoration algorithms and selecting high-quality face images for downstream tasks. We present a novel transformer-based method for GFIQA, which is aided by two unique mechanisms. First, a Dual-Set Degradation Representation Learning (DSL) mechanism uses facial images with both synthetic and real degradations to decouple degradation from content, ensuring generalizability to real-world scenarios. This self-supervised method learns degradation features on a global scale, providing a robust alternative to conventional methods that use local patch information in degradation learning. Second, our transformer leverages facial landmarks to emphasize visually salient parts of a face image in evaluating its perceptual quality. We also introduce a balanced and diverse Comprehensive Generic Face IQA (CGFIQA-40k) dataset of 40K images carefully designed to overcome the biases, in particular the imbalances in skin tone and gender representation, in existing datasets. Extensive analysis and evaluation demonstrate the robustness of our method, marking a significant improvement over prior methods.

A Unified Framework for Biphasic Facial Age Translation with Noisy-Semantic Guided Generative Adversarial Networks

Muyi Sun, Jian Wang, Yunfan Liu et al.

Biphasic facial age translation aims at predicting the appearance of the input face at any age. Facial age translation has received considerable research attention in the last decade due to its practical value in cross-age face recognition and various entertainment applications. However, most existing methods model age changes between holistic images, regardless of the human face structure and the age-changing patterns of individual facial components. Consequently, the lack of semantic supervision will cause infidelity of generated faces in detail. To this end, we propose a unified framework for biphasic facial age translation with noisy-semantic guided generative adversarial networks. Structurally, we project the class-aware noisy semantic layouts to soft latent maps for the following injection operation on the individual facial parts. In particular, we introduce two sub-networks, ProjectionNet and ConstraintNet. ProjectionNet introduces the low-level structural semantic information with noise map and produces soft latent maps. ConstraintNet disentangles the high-level spatial features to constrain the soft latent maps, which endows more age-related context into the soft latent maps. Specifically, attention mechanism is employed in ConstraintNet for feature disentanglement. Meanwhile, in order to mine the strongest mapping ability of the network, we embed two types of learning strategies in the training procedure, supervised self-driven generation and unsupervised condition-driven cycle-consistent generation. As a result, extensive experiments conducted on MORPH and CACD datasets demonstrate the prominent ability of our proposed method which achieves state-of-the-art performance.

One Shot Face Swapping on Megapixels

Yuhao Zhu, Qi Li, Jian Wang et al.

Face swapping has both positive applications such as entertainment, human-computer interaction, etc., and negative applications such as DeepFake threats to politics, economics, etc. Nevertheless, it is necessary to understand the scheme of advanced methods for high-quality face swapping and generate enough and representative face swapping images to train DeepFake detection algorithms. This paper proposes the first Megapixel level method for one shot Face Swapping (or MegaFS for short). Firstly, MegaFS organizes face representation hierarchically by the proposed Hierarchical Representation Face Encoder (HieRFE) in an extended latent space to maintain more facial details, rather than compressed representation in previous face swapping methods. Secondly, a carefully designed Face Transfer Module (FTM) is proposed to transfer the identity from a source image to the target by a non-linear trajectory without explicit feature disentanglement. Finally, the swapped faces can be synthesized by StyleGAN2 with the benefits of its training stability and powerful generative capability. Each part of MegaFS can be trained separately so the requirement of our model for GPU memory can be satisfied for megapixel face swapping. In summary, complete face representation, stable training, and limited memory usage are the three novel contributions to the success of our method. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of MegaFS and the first megapixel level face swapping database is released for research on DeepFake detection and face image editing in the public domain. The dataset is at this link.

3D Invisible Cloak

Mingfu Xue, Can He, Zhiyu Wu et al.

In this paper, we propose a novel physical stealth attack against the person detectors in real world. The proposed method generates an adversarial patch, and prints it on real clothes to make a three dimensional (3D) invisible cloak. Anyone wearing the cloak can evade the detection of person detectors and achieve stealth. We consider the impacts of those 3D physical constraints (i.e., radian, wrinkle, occlusion, angle, etc.) on person stealth attacks, and propose 3D transformations to generate 3D invisible cloak. We launch the person stealth attacks in 3D physical space instead of 2D plane by printing the adversarial patches on real clothes under challenging and complex 3D physical scenarios. The conventional and 3D transformations are performed on the patch during its optimization process. Further, we study how to generate the optimal 3D invisible cloak. Specifically, we explore how to choose input images with specific shapes and colors to generate the optimal 3D invisible cloak. Besides, after successfully making the object detector misjudge the person as other objects, we explore how to make a person completely disappeared, i.e., the person will not be detected as any objects. Finally, we present a systematic evaluation framework to methodically evaluate the performance of the proposed attack in digital domain and physical world. Experimental results in various indoor and outdoor physical scenarios show that, the proposed person stealth attack method is robust and effective even under those complex and challenging physical conditions, such as the cloak is wrinkled, obscured, curved, and from different angles. The attack success rate in digital domain (Inria data set) is 86.56%, while the static and dynamic stealth attack performance in physical world is 100% and 77%, respectively, which are significantly better than existing works.
