CIR-Net: Cross-modality Interaction and Refinement for RGB-D Salient Object Detection

Runmin Cong, Qinwei Lin, Chen Zhang et al.

Focusing on the issue of how to effectively capture and utilize cross-modality information in RGB-D salient object detection (SOD) task, we present a convolutional neural network (CNN) model, named CIR-Net, based on the novel cross-modality interaction and refinement. For the cross-modality interaction, 1) a progressive attention guided integration unit is proposed to sufficiently integrate RGB-D feature representations in the encoder stage, and 2) a convergence aggregation structure is proposed, which flows the RGB and depth decoding features into the corresponding RGB-D decoding streams via an importance gated fusion unit in the decoder stage. For the cross-modality refinement, we insert a refinement middleware structure between the encoder and the decoder, in which the RGB, depth, and RGB-D encoder features are further refined by successively using a self-modality attention refinement unit and a cross-modality weighting refinement unit. At last, with the gradually refined features, we predict the saliency map in the decoder stage. Extensive experiments on six popular RGB-D SOD benchmarks demonstrate that our network outperforms the state-of-the-art saliency detectors both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Does Thermal Really Always Matter for RGB-T Salient Object Detection?

Runmin Cong, Kepu Zhang, Chen Zhang et al.

In recent years, RGB-T salient object detection (SOD) has attracted continuous attention, which makes it possible to identify salient objects in environments such as low light by introducing thermal image. However, most of the existing RGB-T SOD models focus on how to perform cross-modality feature fusion, ignoring whether thermal image is really always matter in SOD task. Starting from the definition and nature of this task, this paper rethinks the connotation of thermal modality, and proposes a network named TNet to solve the RGB-T SOD task. In this paper, we introduce a global illumination estimation module to predict the global illuminance score of the image, so as to regulate the role played by the two modalities. In addition, considering the role of thermal modality, we set up different cross-modality interaction mechanisms in the encoding phase and the decoding phase. On the one hand, we introduce a semantic constraint provider to enrich the semantics of thermal images in the encoding phase, which makes thermal modality more suitable for the SOD task. On the other hand, we introduce a two-stage localization and complementation module in the decoding phase to transfer object localization cue and internal integrity cue in thermal features to the RGB modality. Extensive experiments on three datasets show that the proposed TNet achieves competitive performance compared with 20 state-of-the-art methods.

Point-aware Interaction and CNN-induced Refinement Network for RGB-D Salient Object Detection

Runmin Cong, Hongyu Liu, Chen Zhang et al.

By integrating complementary information from RGB image and depth map, the ability of salient object detection (SOD) for complex and challenging scenes can be improved. In recent years, the important role of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in feature extraction and cross-modality interaction has been fully explored, but it is still insufficient in modeling global long-range dependencies of self-modality and cross-modality. To this end, we introduce CNNs-assisted Transformer architecture and propose a novel RGB-D SOD network with Point-aware Interaction and CNN-induced Refinement (PICR-Net). On the one hand, considering the prior correlation between RGB modality and depth modality, an attention-triggered cross-modality point-aware interaction (CmPI) module is designed to explore the feature interaction of different modalities with positional constraints. On the other hand, in order to alleviate the block effect and detail destruction problems brought by the Transformer naturally, we design a CNN-induced refinement (CNNR) unit for content refinement and supplementation. Extensive experiments on five RGB-D SOD datasets show that the proposed network achieves competitive results in both quantitative and qualitative comparisons.

Ada-TTA: Towards Adaptive High-Quality Text-to-Talking Avatar Synthesis

Zhenhui Ye, Ziyue Jiang, Yi Ren et al.

We are interested in a novel task, namely low-resource text-to-talking avatar. Given only a few-minute-long talking person video with the audio track as the training data and arbitrary texts as the driving input, we aim to synthesize high-quality talking portrait videos corresponding to the input text. This task has broad application prospects in the digital human industry but has not been technically achieved yet due to two challenges: (1) It is challenging to mimic the timbre from out-of-domain audio for a traditional multi-speaker Text-to-Speech system. (2) It is hard to render high-fidelity and lip-synchronized talking avatars with limited training data. In this paper, we introduce Adaptive Text-to-Talking Avatar (Ada-TTA), which (1) designs a generic zero-shot multi-speaker TTS model that well disentangles the text content, timbre, and prosody; and (2) embraces recent advances in neural rendering to achieve realistic audio-driven talking face video generation. With these designs, our method overcomes the aforementioned two challenges and achieves to generate identity-preserving speech and realistic talking person video. Experiments demonstrate that our method could synthesize realistic, identity-preserving, and audio-visual synchronized talking avatar videos.

HumanDiT: Pose-Guided Diffusion Transformer for Long-form Human Motion Video Generation

Qijun Gan, Yi Ren, Chen Zhang et al.

Human motion video generation has advanced significantly, while existing methods still struggle with accurately rendering detailed body parts like hands and faces, especially in long sequences and intricate motions. Current approaches also rely on fixed resolution and struggle to maintain visual consistency. To address these limitations, we propose HumanDiT, a pose-guided Diffusion Transformer (DiT)-based framework trained on a large and wild dataset containing 14,000 hours of high-quality video to produce high-fidelity videos with fine-grained body rendering. Specifically, (i) HumanDiT, built on DiT, supports numerous video resolutions and variable sequence lengths, facilitating learning for long-sequence video generation; (ii) we introduce a prefix-latent reference strategy to maintain personalized characteristics across extended sequences. Furthermore, during inference, HumanDiT leverages Keypoint-DiT to generate subsequent pose sequences, facilitating video continuation from static images or existing videos. It also utilizes a Pose Adapter to enable pose transfer with given sequences. Extensive experiments demonstrate its superior performance in generating long-form, pose-accurate videos across diverse scenarios.

Improving Object Permanence using Agent Actions and Reasoning

Ying Siu Liang, Chen Zhang, Dongkyu Choi et al.

Object permanence in psychology means knowing that objects still exist even if they are no longer visible. It is a crucial concept for robots to operate autonomously in uncontrolled environments. Existing approaches learn object permanence from low-level perception, but perform poorly on more complex scenarios, like when objects are contained and carried by others. Knowledge about manipulation actions performed on an object prior to its disappearance allows us to reason about its location, e.g., that the object has been placed in a carrier. In this paper we argue that object permanence can be improved when the robot uses knowledge about executed actions and describe an approach to infer hidden object states from agent actions. We show that considering agent actions not only improves rule-based reasoning models but also purely neural approaches, showing its general applicability. Then, we conduct quantitative experiments on a snitch localization task using a dataset of 1,371 synthesized videos, where we compare the performance of different object permanence models with and without action annotations. We demonstrate that models with action annotations can significantly increase performance of both neural and rule-based approaches. Finally, we evaluate the usability of our approach in real-world applications by conducting qualitative experiments with two Universal Robots (UR5 and UR16e) in both lab and industrial settings. The robots complete benchmark tasks for a gearbox assembly and demonstrate the object permanence capabilities with real sensor data in an industrial environment.

Cross-modality Discrepant Interaction Network for RGB-D Salient Object Detection

Chen Zhang, Runmin Cong, Qinwei Lin et al.

The popularity and promotion of depth maps have brought new vigor and vitality into salient object detection (SOD), and a mass of RGB-D SOD algorithms have been proposed, mainly concentrating on how to better integrate cross-modality features from RGB image and depth map. For the cross-modality interaction in feature encoder, existing methods either indiscriminately treat RGB and depth modalities, or only habitually utilize depth cues as auxiliary information of the RGB branch. Different from them, we reconsider the status of two modalities and propose a novel Cross-modality Discrepant Interaction Network (CDINet) for RGB-D SOD, which differentially models the dependence of two modalities according to the feature representations of different layers. To this end, two components are designed to implement the effective cross-modality interaction: 1) the RGB-induced Detail Enhancement (RDE) module leverages RGB modality to enhance the details of the depth features in low-level encoder stage. 2) the Depth-induced Semantic Enhancement (DSE) module transfers the object positioning and internal consistency of depth features to the RGB branch in high-level encoder stage. Furthermore, we also design a Dense Decoding Reconstruction (DDR) structure, which constructs a semantic block by combining multi-level encoder features to upgrade the skip connection in the feature decoding. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets demonstrate that our network outperforms $15$ state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and qualitatively. CompConv: A Compact Convolution Module for Efficient Feature Learning

Chen Zhang, Yinghao Xu, Yujun Shen

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved remarkable success in various computer vision tasks but rely on tremendous computational cost. To solve this problem, existing approaches either compress well-trained large-scale models or learn lightweight models with carefully designed network structures. In this work, we make a close study of the convolution operator, which is the basic unit used in CNNs, to reduce its computing load. In particular, we propose a compact convolution module, called CompConv, to facilitate efficient feature learning. With the divide-and-conquer strategy, CompConv is able to save a great many computations as well as parameters to produce a certain dimensional feature map. Furthermore, CompConv discreetly integrates the input features into the outputs to efficiently inherit the input information. More importantly, the novel CompConv is a plug-and-play module that can be directly applied to modern CNN structures to replace the vanilla convolution layers without further effort. Extensive experimental results suggest that CompConv can adequately compress the benchmark CNN structures yet barely sacrifice the performance, surpassing other competitors.

Multi-view Clustering via Deep Matrix Factorization and Partition Alignment

Chen Zhang, Siwei Wang, Jiyuan Liu et al.

Multi-view clustering (MVC) has been extensively studied to collect multiple source information in recent years. One typical type of MVC methods is based on matrix factorization to effectively perform dimension reduction and clustering. However, the existing approaches can be further improved with following considerations: i) The current one-layer matrix factorization framework cannot fully exploit the useful data representations. ii) Most algorithms only focus on the shared information while ignore the view-specific structure leading to suboptimal solutions. iii) The partition level information has not been utilized in existing work. To solve the above issues, we propose a novel multi-view clustering algorithm via deep matrix decomposition and partition alignment. To be specific, the partition representations of each view are obtained through deep matrix decomposition, and then are jointly utilized with the optimal partition representation for fusing multi-view information. Finally, an alternating optimization algorithm is developed to solve the optimization problem with proven convergence. The comprehensive experimental results conducted on six benchmark multi-view datasets clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm against the SOTA methods.

Multi-view Clustering with Deep Matrix Factorization and Global Graph Refinement

Chen Zhang, Siwei Wang, Wenxuan Tu et al.

Multi-view clustering is an important yet challenging task in machine learning and data mining community. One popular strategy for multi-view clustering is matrix factorization which could explore useful feature representations at lower-dimensional space and therefore alleviate dimension curse. However, there are two major drawbacks in the existing work: i) most matrix factorization methods are limited to shadow depth, which leads to the inability to fully discover the rich hidden information of original data. Few deep matrix factorization methods provide a basis for the selection of the new representation's dimensions of different layers. ii) the majority of current approaches only concentrate on the view-shared information and ignore the specific local features in different views. To tackle the above issues, we propose a novel Multi-View Clustering method with Deep semi-NMF and Global Graph Refinement (MVC-DMF-GGR) in this paper. Firstly, we capture new representation matrices for each view by hierarchical decomposition, then learn a common graph by approximating a combination of graphs which are reconstructed from these new representations to refine the new representations in return. An alternate algorithm with proved convergence is then developed to solve the optimization problem and the results on six multi-view benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed algorithm.

iVPF: Numerical Invertible Volume Preserving Flow for Efficient Lossless Compression

Shifeng Zhang, Chen Zhang, Ning Kang et al.

It is nontrivial to store rapidly growing big data nowadays, which demands high-performance lossless compression techniques. Likelihood-based generative models have witnessed their success on lossless compression, where flow based models are desirable in allowing exact data likelihood optimisation with bijective mappings. However, common continuous flows are in contradiction with the discreteness of coding schemes, which requires either 1) imposing strict constraints on flow models that degrades the performance or 2) coding numerous bijective mapping errors which reduces the efficiency. In this paper, we investigate volume preserving flows for lossless compression and show that a bijective mapping without error is possible. We propose Numerical Invertible Volume Preserving Flow (iVPF) which is derived from the general volume preserving flows. By introducing novel computation algorithms on flow models, an exact bijective mapping is achieved without any numerical error. We also propose a lossless compression algorithm based on iVPF. Experiments on various datasets show that the algorithm based on iVPF achieves state-of-the-art compression ratio over lightweight compression algorithms.
