BAdam: A Memory Efficient Full Parameter Optimization Method for Large Language ModelsQijun Luo, Hengxu Yu, Xiao Li
This work presents BAdam, an optimization method that leverages the block coordinate descent (BCD) framework with Adam's update rule. BAdam offers a memory efficient approach to the full parameter finetuning of large language models. We conduct a theoretical convergence analysis for BAdam in the deterministic case. Experimentally, we apply BAdam to finetune the Llama 3-8B and Llama 3-70B models using a single RTX3090-24GB GPU and 4 A100-80GB GPUs, respectively. The results confirm BAdam's efficiency in terms of memory usage, running time, and optimization capability. Furthermore, the downstream performance evaluation based on MT-bench and math benchmarks shows that BAdam outperforms existing memory efficient baselines such as LoRA. It also demonstrates that BAdam can achieve comparable or even superior performance compared to Adam. Finally, the ablation study using SGD's update rule illustrates the suitability of BCD for finetuning LLMs. Our code can be easily integrated into any PyTorch-based codebase and is available at https://github.com/Ledzy/BAdam.

A Model Aware AIGC Task Offloading Algorithm in IIoT Edge ComputingXin Wang, Xiao Huan Li, Xun Wang
The integration of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) with Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC) offers new opportunities for smart manufacturing, but it also introduces challenges related to computation-intensive tasks and low-latency demands. Traditional generative models based on cloud computing are difficult to meet the real-time requirements of AIGC tasks in IIoT environments, and edge computing can effectively reduce latency through task offloading. However, the dynamic nature of AIGC tasks, model switching delays, and resource constraints impose higher demands on edge computing environments. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an AIGC task offloading framework tailored for IIoT edge computing environments, considering the latency and energy consumption caused by AIGC model switching for the first time. IIoT devices acted as multi-agent collaboratively offload their dynamic AIGC tasks to the most appropriate edge servers deployed with different generative models. A model aware AIGC task offloading algorithm based on Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG-MATO) is devised to minimize the latency and energy. Experimental results show that MADDPG-MATO outperforms baseline algorithms, achieving an average reduction of 6.98% in latency, 7.12% in energy consumption, and a 3.72% increase in task completion rate across four sets of experiments with model numbers ranging from 3 to 6, it is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm is robust and efficient in dynamic, high-load IIoT environments.

UVRM: A Scalable 3D Reconstruction Model from Unposed VideosShiu-hong Kao, Xiao Li, Jinglu Wang et al.
Large Reconstruction Models (LRMs) have recently become a popular method for creating 3D foundational models. Training 3D reconstruction models with 2D visual data traditionally requires prior knowledge of camera poses for the training samples, a process that is both time-consuming and prone to errors. Consequently, 3D reconstruction training has been confined to either synthetic 3D datasets or small-scale datasets with annotated poses. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of 3D reconstruction using unposed video data of various objects. We introduce UVRM, a novel 3D reconstruction model capable of being trained and evaluated on monocular videos without requiring any information about the pose. UVRM uses a transformer network to implicitly aggregate video frames into a pose-invariant latent feature space, which is then decoded into a tri-plane 3D representation. To obviate the need for ground-truth pose annotations during training, UVRM employs a combination of the score distillation sampling (SDS) method and an analysis-by-synthesis approach, progressively synthesizing pseudo novel-views using a pre-trained diffusion model. We qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate UVRM's performance on the G-Objaverse and CO3D datasets without relying on pose information. Extensive experiments show that UVRM is capable of effectively and efficiently reconstructing a wide range of 3D objects from unposed videos.

SPRIGHT: A Fast and Robust Framework for Sparse Walsh-Hadamard TransformXiao Li, Joseph K. Bradley, Sameer Pawar et al.
We consider the problem of computing the Walsh-Hadamard Transform (WHT) of some $N$-length input vector in the presence of noise, where the $N$-point Walsh spectrum is $K$-sparse with $K = {O}(N^δ)$ scaling sub-linearly in the input dimension $N$ for some $0<δ<1$. Over the past decade, there has been a resurgence in research related to the computation of Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) for some length-$N$ input signal that has a $K$-sparse Fourier spectrum. In particular, through a sparse-graph code design, our earlier work on the Fast Fourier Aliasing-based Sparse Transform (FFAST) algorithm computes the $K$-sparse DFT in time ${O}(K\log K)$ by taking ${O}(K)$ noiseless samples. Inspired by the coding-theoretic design framework, Scheibler et al. proposed the Sparse Fast Hadamard Transform (SparseFHT) algorithm that elegantly computes the $K$-sparse WHT in the absence of noise using ${O}(K\log N)$ samples in time ${O}(K\log^2 N)$. However, the SparseFHT algorithm explicitly exploits the noiseless nature of the problem, and is not equipped to deal with scenarios where the observations are corrupted by noise. Therefore, a question of critical interest is whether this coding-theoretic framework can be made robust to noise. Further, if the answer is yes, what is the extra price that needs to be paid for being robust to noise? In this paper, we show, quite interestingly, that there is {\it no extra price} that needs to be paid for being robust to noise other than a constant factor. In other words, we can maintain the same sample complexity ${O}(K\log N)$ and the computational complexity ${O}(K\log^2 N)$ as those of the noiseless case, using our SParse Robust Iterative Graph-based Hadamard Transform (SPRIGHT) algorithm.
