OTFPF: Optimal Transport-Based Feature Pyramid Fusion Network for Brain Age Estimation with 3D Overlapped ConvNeXtYu Fu, Yanyan Huang, Yalin Wang et al.
Chronological age of healthy brain is able to be predicted using deep neural networks from T1-weighted magnetic resonance images (T1 MRIs), and the predicted brain age could serve as an effective biomarker for detecting aging-related diseases or disorders. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end neural network architecture, referred to as optimal transport based feature pyramid fusion (OTFPF) network, for the brain age estimation with T1 MRIs. The OTFPF consists of three types of modules: Optimal Transport based Feature Pyramid Fusion (OTFPF) module, 3D overlapped ConvNeXt (3D OL-ConvNeXt) module and fusion module. These modules strengthen the OTFPF network's understanding of each brain's semi-multimodal and multi-level feature pyramid information, and significantly improve its estimation performances. Comparing with recent state-of-the-art models, the proposed OTFPF converges faster and performs better. The experiments with 11,728 MRIs aged 3-97 years show that OTFPF network could provide accurate brain age estimation, yielding mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.097, Pearson's correlation coefficient (PCC) of 0.993 and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (SRCC) of 0.989, between the estimated and chronological ages. Widespread quantitative experiments and ablation experiments demonstrate the superiority and rationality of OTFPF network. The codes and implement details will be released on GitHub: https://github.com/ZJU-Brain/OTFPF after final decision.
AsyncFedED: Asynchronous Federated Learning with Euclidean Distance based Adaptive Weight AggregationQiyuan Wang, Qianqian Yang, Shibo He et al.
In an asynchronous federated learning framework, the server updates the global model once it receives an update from a client instead of waiting for all the updates to arrive as in the synchronous setting. This allows heterogeneous devices with varied computing power to train the local models without pausing, thereby speeding up the training process. However, it introduces the stale model problem, where the newly arrived update was calculated based on a set of stale weights that are older than the current global model, which may hurt the convergence of the model. In this paper, we present an asynchronous federated learning framework with a proposed adaptive weight aggregation algorithm, referred to as AsyncFedED. To the best of our knowledge this aggregation method is the first to take the staleness of the arrived gradients, measured by the Euclidean distance between the stale model and the current global model, and the number of local epochs that have been performed, into account. Assuming general non-convex loss functions, we prove the convergence of the proposed method theoretically. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed AsyncFedED in terms of the convergence rate and model accuracy compared to the existing methods for three considered tasks.

AccEPT: An Acceleration Scheme for Speeding Up Edge Pipeline-parallel TrainingYuhao Chen, Yuxuan Yan, Qianqian Yang et al.
It is usually infeasible to fit and train an entire large deep neural network (DNN) model using a single edge device due to the limited resources. To facilitate intelligent applications across edge devices, researchers have proposed partitioning a large model into several sub-models, and deploying each of them to a different edge device to collaboratively train a DNN model. However, the communication overhead caused by the large amount of data transmitted from one device to another during training, as well as the sub-optimal partition point due to the inaccurate latency prediction of computation at each edge device can significantly slow down training. In this paper, we propose AccEPT, an acceleration scheme for accelerating the edge collaborative pipeline-parallel training. In particular, we propose a light-weight adaptive latency predictor to accurately estimate the computation latency of each layer at different devices, which also adapts to unseen devices through continuous learning. Therefore, the proposed latency predictor leads to better model partitioning which balances the computation loads across participating devices. Moreover, we propose a bit-level computation-efficient data compression scheme to compress the data to be transmitted between devices during training. Our numerical results demonstrate that our proposed acceleration approach is able to significantly speed up edge pipeline parallel training up to 3 times faster in the considered experimental settings.

Semantic-aware Digital Twin for Metaverse: A Comprehensive ReviewSenthil Kumar Jagatheesaperumal, Zhaohui Yang, Qianqian Yang et al.
To facilitate the deployment of digital twins in Metaverse, the paradigm with semantic awareness has been proposed as a means for enabling accurate and task-oriented information extraction with inherent intelligence. However, this framework requires all devices in the Metaverse environment to be directly linked with the semantic model to enable faithful interpretation of messages. In contrast, this article introduces the digital twin framework, considering a smart industrial application, which enables semantic communication in conjugation with the Metaverse enabling technologies. The fundamentals of this framework are demonstrated on an industrial shopfloor management use case with a digital twin so as to improve its performance through semantic communication. An overview of semantic communication, Metaverse, and digital twins is presented. Integration of these technologies with the basic architecture as well as the impact on future industrial applications is presented. In a nutshell, this article showcases how semantic awareness can be an effective candidate in the implementation of digital twins for Metaverse applications.

A resource-efficient deep learning framework for low-dose brain PET image reconstruction and analysisYu Fu, Shunjie Dong, Yi Liao et al.
18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging usually needs a full-dose radioactive tracer to obtain satisfactory diagnostic results, which raises concerns about the potential health risks of radiation exposure, especially for pediatric patients. Reconstructing the low-dose PET (L-PET) images to the high-quality full-dose PET (F-PET) ones is an effective way that both reduces the radiation exposure and remains diagnostic accuracy. In this paper, we propose a resource-efficient deep learning framework for L-PET reconstruction and analysis, referred to as transGAN-SDAM, to generate F-PET from corresponding L-PET, and quantify the standard uptake value ratios (SUVRs) of these generated F-PET at whole brain. The transGAN-SDAM consists of two modules: a transformer-encoded Generative Adversarial Network (transGAN) and a Spatial Deformable Aggregation Module (SDAM). The transGAN generates higher quality F-PET images, and then the SDAM integrates the spatial information of a sequence of generated F-PET slices to synthesize whole-brain F-PET images. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority and rationality of our approach.

Wireless Transmission of Images With The Assistance of Multi-level Semantic InformationZhenguo Zhang, Qianqian Yang, Shibo He et al.
Semantic-oriented communication has been considered as a promising to boost the bandwidth efficiency by only transmitting the semantics of the data. In this paper, we propose a multi-level semantic aware communication system for wireless image transmission, named MLSC-image, which is based on the deep learning techniques and trained in an end to end manner. In particular, the proposed model includes a multilevel semantic feature extractor, that extracts both the highlevel semantic information, such as the text semantics and the segmentation semantics, and the low-level semantic information, such as local spatial details of the images. We employ a pretrained image caption to capture the text semantics and a pretrained image segmentation model to obtain the segmentation semantics. These high-level and low-level semantic features are then combined and encoded by a joint semantic and channel encoder into symbols to transmit over the physical channel. The numerical results validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed semantic communication system, especially under the limited bandwidth condition, which indicates the advantages of the high-level semantics in the compression of images.

Semantic-aware Speech to Text Transmission with Redundancy RemovalTianxiao Han, Qianqian Yang, Zhiguo Shi et al.
Deep learning (DL) based semantic communication methods have been explored for the efficient transmission of images, text, and speech in recent years. In contrast to traditional wireless communication methods that focus on the transmission of abstract symbols, semantic communication approaches attempt to achieve better transmission efficiency by only sending the semantic-related information of the source data. In this paper, we consider semantic-oriented speech to text transmission. We propose a novel end-to-end DL-based transceiver, which includes an attention-based soft alignment module and a redundancy removal module to compress the transmitted data. In particular, the former extracts only the text-related semantic features, and the latter further drops the semantically redundant content, greatly reducing the amount of semantic redundancy compared to existing methods. We also propose a two-stage training scheme, which speeds up the training of the proposed DL model. The simulation results indicate that our proposed method outperforms current methods in terms of the accuracy of the received text and transmission efficiency. Moreover, the proposed method also has a smaller model size and shorter end-to-end runtime.

JMSNAS: Joint Model Split and Neural Architecture Search for Learning over Mobile Edge NetworksYuqing Tian, Zhaoyang Zhang, Zhaohui Yang et al.
The main challenge to deploy deep neural network (DNN) over a mobile edge network is how to split the DNN model so as to match the network architecture as well as all the nodes' computation and communication capacity. This essentially involves two highly coupled procedures: model generating and model splitting. In this paper, a joint model split and neural architecture search (JMSNAS) framework is proposed to automatically generate and deploy a DNN model over a mobile edge network. Considering both the computing and communication resource constraints, a computational graph search problem is formulated to find the multi-split points of the DNN model, and then the model is trained to meet some accuracy requirements. Moreover, the trade-off between model accuracy and completion latency is achieved through the proper design of the objective function. The experiment results confirm the superiority of the proposed framework over the state-of-the-art split machine learning design methods.

Computational modelling of cardiac ischaemia using a variable-order fractional LaplacianMegan E. Farquhar, Timothy J. Moroney, Qianqian Yang et al.
Heart failure is one of the most common causes of death in the western world. Many heart problems are linked to disturbances in cardiac electrical activity, such as wave re-entry caused by ischaemia. In terms of mathematical modelling, the monodomain equation is widely used to model electrical activity in the heart. Recently, Bueno-Orovio et al. [J. R. Soc. Interface 11: 20140352, 2014] pioneered the use of a fractional Laplacian operator in the monodomain equation to account for the complex heterogeneous structures in heart tissue. In this work we consider how to extend this approach to apply to hearts with regions of damaged tissue. This requires the use of a fractional Laplacian operator whose fractional order varies spatially. We develop efficient numerical methods capable of solving this challenging problem on domains ranging from simple one-dimensional intervals with uniform meshes, through to full three-dimensional geometries on unstructured meshes. Results are presented for several test problems in one dimension, demonstrating the effects of different fractional orders in regions of healthy and damaged tissue. Then we showcase some new results for a three-dimensional fractional monodomain equation with a Beeler-Reuter ionic current model on a rabbit heart mesh. These simulation results are found to exhibit wave re-entry behaviour, brought about only by varying the value of the fractional order in a region representing damaged tissue.
