HULC: 3D Human Motion Capture with Pose Manifold Sampling and Dense Contact GuidanceSoshi Shimada, Vladislav Golyanik, Zhi Li et al.
Marker-less monocular 3D human motion capture (MoCap) with scene interactions is a challenging research topic relevant for extended reality, robotics and virtual avatar generation. Due to the inherent depth ambiguity of monocular settings, 3D motions captured with existing methods often contain severe artefacts such as incorrect body-scene inter-penetrations, jitter and body floating. To tackle these issues, we propose HULC, a new approach for 3D human MoCap which is aware of the scene geometry. HULC estimates 3D poses and dense body-environment surface contacts for improved 3D localisations, as well as the absolute scale of the subject. Furthermore, we introduce a 3D pose trajectory optimisation based on a novel pose manifold sampling that resolves erroneous body-environment inter-penetrations. Although the proposed method requires less structured inputs compared to existing scene-aware monocular MoCap algorithms, it produces more physically-plausible poses: HULC significantly and consistently outperforms the existing approaches in various experiments and on different metrics. MoCapDeform: Monocular 3D Human Motion Capture in Deformable ScenesZhi Li, Soshi Shimada, Bernt Schiele et al.
3D human motion capture from monocular RGB images respecting interactions of a subject with complex and possibly deformable environments is a very challenging, ill-posed and under-explored problem. Existing methods address it only weakly and do not model possible surface deformations often occurring when humans interact with scene surfaces. In contrast, this paper proposes MoCapDeform, i.e., a new framework for monocular 3D human motion capture that is the first to explicitly model non-rigid deformations of a 3D scene for improved 3D human pose estimation and deformable environment reconstruction. MoCapDeform accepts a monocular RGB video and a 3D scene mesh aligned in the camera space. It first localises a subject in the input monocular video along with dense contact labels using a new raycasting based strategy. Next, our human-environment interaction constraints are leveraged to jointly optimise global 3D human poses and non-rigid surface deformations. MoCapDeform achieves superior accuracy than competing methods on several datasets, including our newly recorded one with deforming background scenes.
Weakly-Supervised Temporal Action Detection for Fine-Grained Videos with Hierarchical Atomic ActionsZhi Li, Lu He, Huijuan Xu
Action understanding has evolved into the era of fine granularity, as most human behaviors in real life have only minor differences. To detect these fine-grained actions accurately in a label-efficient way, we tackle the problem of weakly-supervised fine-grained temporal action detection in videos for the first time. Without the careful design to capture subtle differences between fine-grained actions, previous weakly-supervised models for general action detection cannot perform well in the fine-grained setting. We propose to model actions as the combinations of reusable atomic actions which are automatically discovered from data through self-supervised clustering, in order to capture the commonality and individuality of fine-grained actions. The learnt atomic actions, represented by visual concepts, are further mapped to fine and coarse action labels leveraging the semantic label hierarchy. Our approach constructs a visual representation hierarchy of four levels: clip level, atomic action level, fine action class level and coarse action class level, with supervision at each level. Extensive experiments on two large-scale fine-grained video datasets, FineAction and FineGym, show the benefit of our proposed weakly-supervised model for fine-grained action detection, and it achieves state-of-the-art results.
SpatioTemporal Feature Integration and Model Fusion for Full Reference Video Quality AssessmentChristos G. Bampis, Zhi Li, Alan C. Bovik
Perceptual video quality assessment models are either frame-based or video-based, i.e., they apply spatiotemporal filtering or motion estimation to capture temporal video distortions. Despite their good performance on video quality databases, video-based approaches are time-consuming and harder to efficiently deploy. To balance between high performance and computational efficiency, Netflix developed the Video Multi-method Assessment Fusion (VMAF) framework, which integrates multiple quality-aware features to predict video quality. Nevertheless, this fusion framework does not fully exploit temporal video quality measurements which are relevant to temporal video distortions. To this end, we propose two improvements to the VMAF framework: SpatioTemporal VMAF and Ensemble VMAF. Both algorithms exploit efficient temporal video features which are fed into a single or multiple regression models. To train our models, we designed a large subjective database and evaluated the proposed models against state-of-the-art approaches. The compared algorithms will be made available as part of the open source package in https://github.com/Netflix/vmaf.
LLMs can Perform Multi-Dimensional Analytic Writing Assessments: A Case Study of L2 Graduate-Level Academic English WritingZhengxiang Wang, Veronika Makarova, Zhi Li et al.
The paper explores the performance of LLMs in the context of multi-dimensional analytic writing assessments, i.e. their ability to provide both scores and comments based on multiple assessment criteria. Using a corpus of literature reviews written by L2 graduate students and assessed by human experts against 9 analytic criteria, we prompt several popular LLMs to perform the same task under various conditions. To evaluate the quality of feedback comments, we apply a novel feedback comment quality evaluation framework. This framework is interpretable, cost-efficient, scalable, and reproducible, compared to existing methods that rely on manual judgments. We find that LLMs can generate reasonably good and generally reliable multi-dimensional analytic assessments. We release our corpus and code for reproducibility.
