Incorporating Hierarchy into Text Encoder: a Contrastive Learning Approach for Hierarchical Text Classification

Zihan Wang, Peiyi Wang, Lianzhe Huang et al. · pku

Hierarchical text classification is a challenging subtask of multi-label classification due to its complex label hierarchy. Existing methods encode text and label hierarchy separately and mix their representations for classification, where the hierarchy remains unchanged for all input text. Instead of modeling them separately, in this work, we propose Hierarchy-guided Contrastive Learning (HGCLR) to directly embed the hierarchy into a text encoder. During training, HGCLR constructs positive samples for input text under the guidance of the label hierarchy. By pulling together the input text and its positive sample, the text encoder can learn to generate the hierarchy-aware text representation independently. Therefore, after training, the HGCLR enhanced text encoder can dispense with the redundant hierarchy. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets verify the effectiveness of HGCLR.

Uncertainty Calibration for Counterfactual Propensity Estimation in Recommendation

Wenbo Hu, Xin Sun, Qiang liu et al.

Post-click conversion rate (CVR) is a reliable indicator of online customers' preferences, making it crucial for developing recommender systems. A major challenge in predicting CVR is severe selection bias, arising from users' inherent self-selection behavior and the system's item selection process. To mitigate this issue, the inverse propensity score (IPS) is employed to weight the prediction error of each observed instance. However, current propensity score estimations are unreliable due to the lack of a quality measure. To address this, we evaluate the quality of propensity scores from the perspective of uncertainty calibration, proposing the use of Expected Calibration Error (ECE) as a measure of propensity-score quality, which quantifies the extent to which predicted probabilities are overconfident by assessing the difference between predicted probabilities and actual observed frequencies. Miscalibrated propensity scores can lead to distorted IPS weights, thereby compromising the debiasing process in CVR prediction. In this paper, we introduce a model-agnostic calibration framework for propensity-based debiasing of CVR predictions. Theoretical analysis on bias and generalization bounds demonstrates the superiority of calibrated propensity estimates over uncalibrated ones. Experiments conducted on the Coat, Yahoo and KuaiRand datasets show improved uncertainty calibration, as evidenced by lower ECE values, leading to enhanced CVR prediction outcomes.

Accurate Airway Tree Segmentation in CT Scans via Anatomy-aware Multi-class Segmentation and Topology-guided Iterative Learning

Puyang Wang, Dazhou Guo, Dandan Zheng et al.

Intrathoracic airway segmentation in computed tomography (CT) is a prerequisite for various respiratory disease analyses such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and lung cancer. Unlike other organs with simpler shapes or topology, the airway's complex tree structure imposes an unbearable burden to generate the "ground truth" label (up to 7 or 3 hours of manual or semi-automatic annotation on each case). Most of the existing airway datasets are incompletely labeled/annotated, thus limiting the completeness of computer-segmented airway. In this paper, we propose a new anatomy-aware multi-class airway segmentation method enhanced by topology-guided iterative self-learning. Based on the natural airway anatomy, we formulate a simple yet highly effective anatomy-aware multi-class segmentation task to intuitively handle the severe intra-class imbalance of the airway. To solve the incomplete labeling issue, we propose a tailored self-iterative learning scheme to segment toward the complete airway tree. For generating pseudo-labels to achieve higher sensitivity , we introduce a novel breakage attention map and design a topology-guided pseudo-label refinement method by iteratively connecting breaking branches commonly existed from initial pseudo-labels. Extensive experiments have been conducted on four datasets including two public challenges. The proposed method ranked 1st in both EXACT'09 challenge using average score and ATM'22 challenge on weighted average score. In a public BAS dataset and a private lung cancer dataset, our method significantly improves previous leading approaches by extracting at least (absolute) 7.5% more detected tree length and 4.0% more tree branches, while maintaining similar precision.

Semi-supervised Semantic Segmentation for Remote Sensing Images via Multi-scale Uncertainty Consistency and Cross-Teacher-Student Attention

Shanwen Wang, Xin Sun, Changrui Chen et al.

Semi-supervised learning offers an appealing solution for remote sensing (RS) image segmentation to relieve the burden of labor-intensive pixel-level labeling. However, RS images pose unique challenges, including rich multi-scale features and high inter-class similarity. To address these problems, this paper proposes a novel semi-supervised Multi-Scale Uncertainty and Cross-Teacher-Student Attention (MUCA) model for RS image semantic segmentation tasks. Specifically, MUCA constrains the consistency among feature maps at different layers of the network by introducing a multi-scale uncertainty consistency regularization. It improves the multi-scale learning capability of semi-supervised algorithms on unlabeled data. Additionally, MUCA utilizes a Cross-Teacher-Student attention mechanism to guide the student network, guiding the student network to construct more discriminative feature representations through complementary features from the teacher network. This design effectively integrates weak and strong augmentations (WA and SA) to further boost segmentation performance. To verify the effectiveness of our model, we conduct extensive experiments on ISPRS-Potsdam and LoveDA datasets. The experimental results show the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art semi-supervised methods. Notably, our model excels in distinguishing highly similar objects, showcasing its potential for advancing semi-supervised RS image segmentation tasks.

Comprehensive Relighting: Generalizable and Consistent Monocular Human Relighting and Harmonization

Junying Wang, Jingyuan Liu, Xin Sun et al.

This paper introduces Comprehensive Relighting, the first all-in-one approach that can both control and harmonize the lighting from an image or video of humans with arbitrary body parts from any scene. Building such a generalizable model is extremely challenging due to the lack of dataset, restricting existing image-based relighting models to a specific scenario (e.g., face or static human). To address this challenge, we repurpose a pre-trained diffusion model as a general image prior and jointly model the human relighting and background harmonization in the coarse-to-fine framework. To further enhance the temporal coherence of the relighting, we introduce an unsupervised temporal lighting model that learns the lighting cycle consistency from many real-world videos without any ground truth. In inference time, our temporal lighting module is combined with the diffusion models through the spatio-temporal feature blending algorithms without extra training; and we apply a new guided refinement as a post-processing to preserve the high-frequency details from the input image. In the experiments, Comprehensive Relighting shows a strong generalizability and lighting temporal coherence, outperforming existing image-based human relighting and harmonization methods.

Jie Xu, Lu Lu, Sen Yang et al.

METHODS: First, a set of evaluation criteria is designed based on a comprehensive literature review. Second, existing candidate criteria are optimized for using a Delphi method by five experts in medicine and engineering. Third, three clinical experts design a set of medical datasets to interact with LLMs. Finally, benchmarking experiments are conducted on the datasets. The responses generated by chatbots based on LLMs are recorded for blind evaluations by five licensed medical experts. RESULTS: The obtained evaluation criteria cover medical professional capabilities, social comprehensive capabilities, contextual capabilities, and computational robustness, with sixteen detailed indicators. The medical datasets include twenty-seven medical dialogues and seven case reports in Chinese. Three chatbots are evaluated, ChatGPT by OpenAI, ERNIE Bot by Baidu Inc., and Doctor PuJiang (Dr. PJ) by Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Experimental results show that Dr. PJ outperforms ChatGPT and ERNIE Bot in both multiple-turn medical dialogue and case report scenarios.

Distributed Quantum Vote Based on Quantum Logical Operators, a New Battlefield of the Second Quantum Revolution

Xin Sun, Feifei He, Daowen Qiu et al.

We designed two rules of binary quantum computed vote: Quantum Logical Veto (QLV) and Quantum Logical Nomination (QLN). The conjunction and disjunction from quantum computational logic are used to define QLV and QLN, respectively. Compared to classical vote, quantum computed vote is fairer, more democratic and has stronger expressive power. Since the advantage of quantum computed vote is neither the speed of computing nor the security of communication, we believe it opens a new battlefield in the second quantum revolution. Compared to other rules of quantum computed vote, QLV and QLN have better scalability. Both QLV and QLN can be implemented by the current technology and the difficulty of implementation does not grow with the increase of the number of voters.

Learning Relation Ties with a Force-Directed Graph in Distant Supervised Relation Extraction

Yuming Shang, Heyan Huang, Xin Sun et al.

Relation ties, defined as the correlation and mutual exclusion between different relations, are critical for distant supervised relation extraction. Existing approaches model this property by greedily learning local dependencies. However, they are essentially limited by failing to capture the global topology structure of relation ties. As a result, they may easily fall into a locally optimal solution. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel force-directed graph based relation extraction model to comprehensively learn relation ties. Specifically, we first build a graph according to the global co-occurrence of relations. Then, we borrow the idea of Coulomb's Law from physics and introduce the concept of attractive force and repulsive force to this graph to learn correlation and mutual exclusion between relations. Finally, the obtained relation representations are applied as an inter-dependent relation classifier. Experimental results on a large scale benchmark dataset demonstrate that our model is capable of modeling global relation ties and significantly outperforms other baselines. Furthermore, the proposed force-directed graph can be used as a module to augment existing relation extraction systems and improve their performance.
