Training-free Composite Scene Generation for Layout-to-Image SynthesisJiaqi Liu, Tao Huang, Chang Xu
Recent breakthroughs in text-to-image diffusion models have significantly advanced the generation of high-fidelity, photo-realistic images from textual descriptions. Yet, these models often struggle with interpreting spatial arrangements from text, hindering their ability to produce images with precise spatial configurations. To bridge this gap, layout-to-image generation has emerged as a promising direction. However, training-based approaches are limited by the need for extensively annotated datasets, leading to high data acquisition costs and a constrained conceptual scope. Conversely, training-free methods face challenges in accurately locating and generating semantically similar objects within complex compositions. This paper introduces a novel training-free approach designed to overcome adversarial semantic intersections during the diffusion conditioning phase. By refining intra-token loss with selective sampling and enhancing the diffusion process with attention redistribution, we propose two innovative constraints: 1) an inter-token constraint that resolves token conflicts to ensure accurate concept synthesis; and 2) a self-attention constraint that improves pixel-to-pixel relationships. Our evaluations confirm the effectiveness of leveraging layout information for guiding the diffusion process, generating content-rich images with enhanced fidelity and complexity. Towards Safe and Robust Autonomous Vehicle Platooning: A Self-Organizing Cooperative Control FrameworkChengkai Xu, Zihao Deng, Jiaqi Liu et al.
In hybrid traffic environments where human-driven vehicles (HDVs) and autonomous vehicles (AVs) coexist, achieving safe and robust decision-making for AV platooning remains a complex challenge. Existing platooning systems often struggle with dynamic formation management and adaptability, especially under complex and dynamic mixed-traffic conditions. To enhance autonomous vehicle platooning within these hybrid environments, this paper presents TriCoD, a twin-world safety-enhanced Data-Model-Knowledge Triple-Driven Cooperative Decision-making Framework. This framework integrates deep reinforcement learning (DRL) with model-driven approaches, enabling dynamic formation dissolution and reconfiguration through a safety-prioritized twin-world deduction mechanism. The DRL component augments traditional model-driven methods, enhancing both safety and operational efficiency, especially under emergency conditions. Additionally, an adaptive switching mechanism allows the system to seamlessly switch between data-driven and model-driven strategies based on real-time traffic demands, thus optimizing decision-making ability and adaptability. Simulation experiments and hardware-in-the-loop tests demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly improves safety, robustness, and flexibility.
Active Generation for Image ClassificationTao Huang, Jiaqi Liu, Shan You et al.
Recently, the growing capabilities of deep generative models have underscored their potential in enhancing image classification accuracy. However, existing methods often demand the generation of a disproportionately large number of images compared to the original dataset, while having only marginal improvements in accuracy. This computationally expensive and time-consuming process hampers the practicality of such approaches. In this paper, we propose to address the efficiency of image generation by focusing on the specific needs and characteristics of the model. With a central tenet of active learning, our method, named ActGen, takes a training-aware approach to image generation. It aims to create images akin to the challenging or misclassified samples encountered by the current model and incorporates these generated images into the training set to augment model performance. ActGen introduces an attentive image guidance technique, using real images as guides during the denoising process of a diffusion model. The model's attention on class prompt is leveraged to ensure the preservation of similar foreground object while diversifying the background. Furthermore, we introduce a gradient-based generation guidance method, which employs two losses to generate more challenging samples and prevent the generated images from being too similar to previously generated ones. Experimental results on the CIFAR and ImageNet datasets demonstrate that our method achieves better performance with a significantly reduced number of generated images. Does Bigger Mean Better? Comparitive Analysis of CNNs and Biomedical Vision Language Modles in Medical DiagnosisRan Tong, Jiaqi Liu, Tong Wang et al.
The accurate interpretation of chest radiographs using automated methods is a critical task in medical imaging. This paper presents a comparative analysis between a supervised lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and a state-of-the-art, zero-shot medical Vision-Language Model (VLM), BiomedCLIP, across two distinct diagnostic tasks: pneumonia detection on the PneumoniaMNIST benchmark and tuberculosis detection on the Shenzhen TB dataset. Our experiments show that supervised CNNs serve as highly competitive baselines in both cases. While the default zero-shot performance of the VLM is lower, we demonstrate that its potential can be unlocked via a simple yet crucial remedy: decision threshold calibration. By optimizing the classification threshold on a validation set, the performance of BiomedCLIP is significantly boosted across both datasets. For pneumonia detection, calibration enables the zero-shot VLM to achieve a superior F1-score of 0.8841, surpassing the supervised CNN's 0.8803. For tuberculosis detection, calibration dramatically improves the F1-score from 0.4812 to 0.7684, bringing it close to the supervised baseline's 0.7834. This work highlights a key insight: proper calibration is essential for leveraging the full diagnostic power of zero-shot VLMs, enabling them to match or even outperform efficient, task-specific supervised models.

Efficient Conditional Generation on Scale-based Visual Autoregressive ModelsJiaqi Liu, Tao Huang, Chang Xu
Recent advances in autoregressive (AR) models have demonstrated their potential to rival diffusion models in image synthesis. However, for complex spatially-conditioned generation, current AR approaches rely on fine-tuning the pre-trained model, leading to significant training costs. In this paper, we propose the Efficient Control Model (ECM), a plug-and-play framework featuring a lightweight control module that introduces control signals via a distributed architecture. This architecture consists of context-aware attention layers that refine conditional features using real-time generated tokens, and a shared gated feed-forward network (FFN) designed to maximize the utilization of its limited capacity and ensure coherent control feature learning. Furthermore, recognizing the critical role of early-stage generation in determining semantic structure, we introduce an early-centric sampling strategy that prioritizes learning early control sequences. This approach reduces computational cost by lowering the number of training tokens per iteration, while a complementary temperature scheduling during inference compensates for the resulting insufficient training of late-stage tokens. Extensive experiments on scale-based AR models validate that our method achieves high-fidelity and diverse control over image generation, surpassing existing baselines while significantly improving both training and inference efficiency.

TL-SDD: A Transfer Learning-Based Method for Surface Defect Detection with Few SamplesJiahui Cheng, Bin Guo, Jiaqi Liu et al.
Surface defect detection plays an increasingly important role in manufacturing industry to guarantee the product quality. Many deep learning methods have been widely used in surface defect detection tasks, and have been proven to perform well in defects classification and location. However, deep learning-based detection methods often require plenty of data for training, which fail to apply to the real industrial scenarios since the distribution of defect categories is often imbalanced. In other words, common defect classes have many samples but rare defect classes have extremely few samples, and it is difficult for these methods to well detect rare defect classes. To solve the imbalanced distribution problem, in this paper we propose TL-SDD: a novel Transfer Learning-based method for Surface Defect Detection. First, we adopt a two-phase training scheme to transfer the knowledge from common defect classes to rare defect classes. Second, we propose a novel Metric-based Surface Defect Detection (M-SDD) model. We design three modules for this model: (1) feature extraction module: containing feature fusion which combines high-level semantic information with low-level structural information. (2) feature reweighting module: transforming examples to a reweighting vector that indicates the importance of features. (3) distance metric module: learning a metric space in which defects are classified by computing distances to representations of each category. Finally, we validate the performance of our proposed method on a real dataset including surface defects of aluminum profiles. Compared to the baseline methods, the performance of our proposed method has improved by up to 11.98% for rare defect classes.
