LSR: A Light-Weight Super-Resolution Method

Wei Wang, Xuejing Lei, Yueru Chen et al.

A light-weight super-resolution (LSR) method from a single image targeting mobile applications is proposed in this work. LSR predicts the residual image between the interpolated low-resolution (ILR) and high-resolution (HR) images using a self-supervised framework. To lower the computational complexity, LSR does not adopt the end-to-end optimization deep networks. It consists of three modules: 1) generation of a pool of rich and diversified representations in the neighborhood of a target pixel via unsupervised learning, 2) selecting a subset from the representation pool that is most relevant to the underlying super-resolution task automatically via supervised learning, 3) predicting the residual of the target pixel via regression. LSR has low computational complexity and reasonable model size so that it can be implemented on mobile/edge platforms conveniently. Besides, it offers better visual quality than classical exemplar-based methods in terms of PSNR/SSIM measures.

Robust Ellipse Fitting Based on Maximum Correntropy Criterion With Variable Center

Wei Wang, Gang Wang, Chenlong Hu et al.

The presence of outliers can significantly degrade the performance of ellipse fitting methods. We develop an ellipse fitting method that is robust to outliers based on the maximum correntropy criterion with variable center (MCC-VC), where a Laplacian kernel is used. For single ellipse fitting, we formulate a non-convex optimization problem to estimate the kernel bandwidth and center and divide it into two subproblems, each estimating one parameter. We design sufficiently accurate convex approximation to each subproblem such that computationally efficient closed-form solutions are obtained. The two subproblems are solved in an alternate manner until convergence is reached. We also investigate coupled ellipses fitting. While there exist multiple ellipses fitting methods that can be used for coupled ellipses fitting, we develop a couple ellipses fitting method by exploiting the special structure. Having unknown association between data points and ellipses, we introduce an association vector for each data point and formulate a non-convex mixed-integer optimization problem to estimate the data associations, which is approximately solved by relaxing it into a second-order cone program. Using the estimated data associations, we extend the proposed method to achieve the final coupled ellipses fitting. The proposed method is shown to have significantly better performance over the existing methods in both simulated data and real images.

Optimal Transport for Unsupervised Denoising Learning

Wei Wang, Fei Wen, Zeyu Yan et al.

Recently, much progress has been made in unsupervised denoising learning. However, existing methods more or less rely on some assumptions on the signal and/or degradation model, which limits their practical performance. How to construct an optimal criterion for unsupervised denoising learning without any prior knowledge on the degradation model is still an open question. Toward answering this question, this work proposes a criterion for unsupervised denoising learning based on the optimal transport theory. This criterion has favorable properties, e.g., approximately maximal preservation of the information of the signal, whilst achieving perceptual reconstruction. Furthermore, though a relaxed unconstrained formulation is used in practical implementation, we prove that the relaxed formulation in theory has the same solution as the original constrained formulation. Experiments on synthetic and real-world data, including realistic photographic, microscopy, depth, and raw depth images, demonstrate that the proposed method even compares favorably with supervised methods, e.g., approaching the PSNR of supervised methods while having better perceptual quality. Particularly, for spatially correlated noise and realistic microscopy images, the proposed method not only achieves better perceptual quality but also has higher PSNR than supervised methods. Besides, it shows remarkable superiority in harsh practical conditions with complex noise, e.g., raw depth images. Code is available at https://github.com/wangweiSJTU/OTUR.

Substitutional Neural Image Compression

Xiao Wang, Wei Jiang, Wei Wang et al.

We describe Substitutional Neural Image Compression (SNIC), a general approach for enhancing any neural image compression model, that requires no data or additional tuning of the trained model. It boosts compression performance toward a flexible distortion metric and enables bit-rate control using a single model instance. The key idea is to replace the image to be compressed with a substitutional one that outperforms the original one in a desired way. Finding such a substitute is inherently difficult for conventional codecs, yet surprisingly favorable for neural compression models thanks to their fully differentiable structures. With gradients of a particular loss backpropogated to the input, a desired substitute can be efficiently crafted iteratively. We demonstrate the effectiveness of SNIC, when combined with various neural compression models and target metrics, in improving compression quality and performing bit-rate control measured by rate-distortion curves. Empirical results of control precision and generation speed are also discussed.

Depth and Reflection Total Variation for Single Image Dehazing

Wei Wang, Chuanjiang He

Haze removal has been a very challenging problem due to its ill-posedness, which is more ill-posed if the input data is only a single hazy image. In this paper, we present a new approach for removing haze from a single input image. The proposed method combines the model widely used to describe the formation of a haze image with the assumption in Retinex that an image is the product of the illumination and the reflection. We assume that the depth and reflection functions are spatially piecewise smooth in the model, where the total variation is used for the regularization. The proposed model is defined as a constrained optimization problem, which is solved by an alternating minimization scheme and the fast gradient projection algorithm. Some theoretic analyses are given for the proposed model and algorithm. Finally, numerical examples are presented to demonstrate that our method can restore vivid and contrastive hazy images effectively.
