Learning Semantic-Aware Knowledge Guidance for Low-Light Image Enhancement

Yuhui Wu, Chen Pan, Guoqing Wang et al.

Low-light image enhancement (LLIE) investigates how to improve illumination and produce normal-light images. The majority of existing methods improve low-light images via a global and uniform manner, without taking into account the semantic information of different regions. Without semantic priors, a network may easily deviate from a region's original color. To address this issue, we propose a novel semantic-aware knowledge-guided framework (SKF) that can assist a low-light enhancement model in learning rich and diverse priors encapsulated in a semantic segmentation model. We concentrate on incorporating semantic knowledge from three key aspects: a semantic-aware embedding module that wisely integrates semantic priors in feature representation space, a semantic-guided color histogram loss that preserves color consistency of various instances, and a semantic-guided adversarial loss that produces more natural textures by semantic priors. Our SKF is appealing in acting as a general framework in LLIE task. Extensive experiments show that models equipped with the SKF significantly outperform the baselines on multiple datasets and our SKF generalizes to different models and scenes well. The code is available at Semantic-Aware-Low-Light-Image-Enhancement.

Medium Transmission Map Matters for Learning to Restore Real-World Underwater Images

Yan Kai, Liang Lanyue, Zheng Ziqiang et al.

Underwater visual perception is essentially important for underwater exploration, archeology, ecosystem and so on. The low illumination, light reflections, scattering, absorption and suspended particles inevitably lead to the critically degraded underwater image quality, which causes great challenges on recognizing the objects from the underwater images. The existing underwater enhancement methods that aim to promote the underwater visibility, heavily suffer from the poor image restoration performance and generalization ability. To reduce the difficulty of underwater image enhancement, we introduce the media transmission map as guidance to assist in image enhancement. We formulate the interaction between the underwater visual images and the transmission map to obtain better enhancement results. Even with simple and lightweight network configuration, the proposed method can achieve advanced results of 22.6 dB on the challenging Test-R90 with an impressive 30 times faster than the existing models. Comprehensive experimental results have demonstrated the superiority and potential on underwater perception. Paper's code is offered on: https://github.com/GroupG-yk/MTUR-Net.

Learning a Deep Color Difference Metric for Photographic Images

Haoyu Chen, Zhihua Wang, Yang Yang et al.

Most well-established and widely used color difference (CD) metrics are handcrafted and subject-calibrated against uniformly colored patches, which do not generalize well to photographic images characterized by natural scene complexities. Constructing CD formulae for photographic images is still an active research topic in imaging/illumination, vision science, and color science communities. In this paper, we aim to learn a deep CD metric for photographic images with four desirable properties. First, it well aligns with the observations in vision science that color and form are linked inextricably in visual cortical processing. Second, it is a proper metric in the mathematical sense. Third, it computes accurate CDs between photographic images, differing mainly in color appearances. Fourth, it is robust to mild geometric distortions (e.g., translation or due to parallax), which are often present in photographic images of the same scene captured by different digital cameras. We show that all these properties can be satisfied at once by learning a multi-scale autoregressive normalizing flow for feature transform, followed by the Euclidean distance which is linearly proportional to the human perceptual CD. Quantitative and qualitative experiments on the large-scale SPCD dataset demonstrate the promise of the learned CD metric.

Invertible Mask Network for Face Privacy-Preserving

Yang Yang, Yiyang Huang, Ming Shi et al.

Face privacy-preserving is one of the hotspots that arises dramatic interests of research. However, the existing face privacy-preserving methods aim at causing the missing of semantic information of face and cannot preserve the reusability of original facial information. To achieve the naturalness of the processed face and the recoverability of the original protected face, this paper proposes face privacy-preserving method based on Invertible "Mask" Network (IMN). In IMN, we introduce a Mask-net to generate "Mask" face firstly. Then, put the "Mask" face onto the protected face and generate the masked face, in which the masked face is indistinguishable from "Mask" face. Finally, "Mask" face can be put off from the masked face and obtain the recovered face to the authorized users, in which the recovered face is visually indistinguishable from the protected face. The experimental results show that the proposed method can not only effectively protect the privacy of the protected face, but also almost perfectly recover the protected face from the masked face.

JoReS-Diff: Joint Retinex and Semantic Priors in Diffusion Model for Low-light Image Enhancement

Yuhui Wu, Guoqing Wang, Zhiwen Wang et al.

Low-light image enhancement (LLIE) has achieved promising performance by employing conditional diffusion models. Despite the success of some conditional methods, previous methods may neglect the importance of a sufficient formulation of task-specific condition strategy, resulting in suboptimal visual outcomes. In this study, we propose JoReS-Diff, a novel approach that incorporates Retinex- and semantic-based priors as the additional pre-processing condition to regulate the generating capabilities of the diffusion model. We first leverage pre-trained decomposition network to generate the Retinex prior, which is updated with better quality by an adjustment network and integrated into a refinement network to implement Retinex-based conditional generation at both feature- and image-levels. Moreover, the semantic prior is extracted from the input image with an off-the-shelf semantic segmentation model and incorporated through semantic attention layers. By treating Retinex- and semantic-based priors as the condition, JoReS-Diff presents a unique perspective for establishing an diffusion model for LLIE and similar image enhancement tasks. Extensive experiments validate the rationality and superiority of our approach.

LaFIn: Generative Landmark Guided Face Inpainting

Yang Yang, Xiaojie Guo, Jiayi Ma et al.

It is challenging to inpaint face images in the wild, due to the large variation of appearance, such as different poses, expressions and occlusions. A good inpainting algorithm should guarantee the realism of output, including the topological structure among eyes, nose and mouth, as well as the attribute consistency on pose, gender, ethnicity, expression, etc. This paper studies an effective deep learning based strategy to deal with these issues, which comprises of a facial landmark predicting subnet and an image inpainting subnet. Concretely, given partial observation, the landmark predictor aims to provide the structural information (e.g. topological relationship and expression) of incomplete faces, while the inpaintor is to generate plausible appearance (e.g. gender and ethnicity) conditioned on the predicted landmarks. Experiments on the CelebA-HQ and CelebA datasets are conducted to reveal the efficacy of our design and, to demonstrate its superiority over state-of-the-art alternatives both qualitatively and quantitatively. In addition, we assume that high-quality completed faces together with their landmarks can be utilized as augmented data to further improve the performance of (any) landmark predictor, which is corroborated by experimental results on the 300W and WFLW datasets.
