Modality-Balanced Embedding for Video RetrievalXun Wang, Bingqing Ke, Xuanping Li et al. · deepmind
Video search has become the main routine for users to discover videos relevant to a text query on large short-video sharing platforms. During training a query-video bi-encoder model using online search logs, we identify a modality bias phenomenon that the video encoder almost entirely relies on text matching, neglecting other modalities of the videos such as vision, audio. This modality imbalanceresults from a) modality gap: the relevance between a query and a video text is much easier to learn as the query is also a piece of text, with the same modality as the video text; b) data bias: most training samples can be solved solely by text matching. Here we share our practices to improve the first retrieval stage including our solution for the modality imbalance issue. We propose MBVR (short for Modality Balanced Video Retrieval) with two key components: manually generated modality-shuffled (MS) samples and a dynamic margin (DM) based on visual relevance. They can encourage the video encoder to pay balanced attentions to each modality. Through extensive experiments on a real world dataset, we show empirically that our method is both effective and efficient in solving modality bias problem. We have also deployed our MBVR in a large video platform and observed statistically significant boost over a highly optimized baseline in an A/B test and manual GSB evaluations.
VM-UNET-V2 Rethinking Vision Mamba UNet for Medical Image SegmentationMingya Zhang, Yue Yu, Limei Gu et al.
In the field of medical image segmentation, models based on both CNN and Transformer have been thoroughly investigated. However, CNNs have limited modeling capabilities for long-range dependencies, making it challenging to exploit the semantic information within images fully. On the other hand, the quadratic computational complexity poses a challenge for Transformers. Recently, State Space Models (SSMs), such as Mamba, have been recognized as a promising method. They not only demonstrate superior performance in modeling long-range interactions, but also preserve a linear computational complexity. Inspired by the Mamba architecture, We proposed Vison Mamba-UNetV2, the Visual State Space (VSS) Block is introduced to capture extensive contextual information, the Semantics and Detail Infusion (SDI) is introduced to augment the infusion of low-level and high-level features. We conduct comprehensive experiments on the ISIC17, ISIC18, CVC-300, CVC-ClinicDB, Kvasir, CVC-ColonDB and ETIS-LaribPolypDB public datasets. The results indicate that VM-UNetV2 exhibits competitive performance in medical image segmentation tasks. Our code is available at https://github.com/nobodyplayer1/VM-UNetV2.

Aggregating Conformal Prediction Sets via α-AllocationCongbin Xu, Yue Yu, Haojie Ren et al.
Conformal prediction offers a distribution-free framework for constructing prediction sets with finite-sample coverage. Yet, efficiently leveraging multiple conformity scores to reduce prediction set size remains a major open challenge. Instead of selecting a single best score, this work introduces a principled aggregation strategy, COnfidence-Level Allocation (COLA), that optimally allocates confidence levels across multiple conformal prediction sets to minimize empirical set size while maintaining provable coverage. Two variants are further developed, COLA-s and COLA-f, which guarantee finite-sample marginal coverage via sample splitting and full conformalization, respectively. In addition, we develop COLA-l, an individualized allocation strategy that promotes local size efficiency while achieving asymptotic conditional coverage. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that COLA achieves considerably smaller prediction sets than state-of-the-art baselines while maintaining valid coverage.
