Simple and Scalable Nearest Neighbor Machine TranslationYuhan Dai, Zhirui Zhang, Qiuzhi Liu et al. · tencent-ai
$k$NN-MT is a straightforward yet powerful approach for fast domain adaptation, which directly plugs pre-trained neural machine translation (NMT) models with domain-specific token-level $k$-nearest-neighbor ($k$NN) retrieval to achieve domain adaptation without retraining. Despite being conceptually attractive, $k$NN-MT is burdened with massive storage requirements and high computational complexity since it conducts nearest neighbor searches over the entire reference corpus. In this paper, we propose a simple and scalable nearest neighbor machine translation framework to drastically promote the decoding and storage efficiency of $k$NN-based models while maintaining the translation performance. To this end, we dynamically construct an extremely small datastore for each input via sentence-level retrieval to avoid searching the entire datastore in vanilla $k$NN-MT, based on which we further introduce a distance-aware adapter to adaptively incorporate the $k$NN retrieval results into the pre-trained NMT models. Experiments on machine translation in two general settings, static domain adaptation and online learning, demonstrate that our proposed approach not only achieves almost 90% speed as the NMT model without performance degradation, but also significantly reduces the storage requirements of $k$NN-MT.
Pyramidal Predictive Network: A Model for Visual-frame Prediction Based on Predictive Coding TheoryChaofan Ling, Junpei Zhong, Weihua Li
Visual-frame prediction is a pixel-dense prediction task that infers future frames from past frames. Lacking of appearance details, low prediction accuracy and high computational overhead are still major problems with current models or methods. In this paper, we propose a novel neural network model inspired by the well-known predictive coding theory to deal with the problems. Predictive coding provides an interesting and reliable computational framework, which will be combined with other theories such as the cerebral cortex at different level oscillates at different frequencies, to design an efficient and reliable predictive network model for visual-frame prediction. Specifically, the model is composed of a series of recurrent and convolutional units forming the top-down and bottom-up streams, respectively. The update frequency of neural units on each of the layer decreases with the increasing of network levels, which results in neurons of higher-level can capture information in longer time dimensions. According to the experimental results, this model shows better compactness and comparable predictive performance with existing works, implying lower computational cost and higher prediction accuracy. Predictive Coding Based Multiscale Network with Encoder-Decoder LSTM for Video PredictionChaofan Ling, Junpei Zhong, Weihua Li
We present a multi-scale predictive coding model for future video frames prediction. Drawing inspiration on the ``Predictive Coding" theories in cognitive science, it is updated by a combination of bottom-up and top-down information flows, which can enhance the interaction between different network levels. However, traditional predictive coding models only predict what is happening hierarchically rather than predicting the future. To address the problem, our model employs a multi-scale approach (Coarse to Fine), where the higher level neurons generate coarser predictions (lower resolution), while the lower level generate finer predictions (higher resolution). In terms of network architecture, we directly incorporate the encoder-decoder network within the LSTM module and share the final encoded high-level semantic information across different network levels. This enables comprehensive interaction between the current input and the historical states of LSTM compared with the traditional Encoder-LSTM-Decoder architecture, thus learning more believable temporal and spatial dependencies. Furthermore, to tackle the instability in adversarial training and mitigate the accumulation of prediction errors in long-term prediction, we propose several improvements to the training strategy. Our approach achieves good performance on datasets such as KTH, Moving MNIST and Caltech Pedestrian. Code is available at https://github.com/Ling-CF/MSPN.
Ultra Dual-Path Compression For Joint Echo Cancellation And Noise SuppressionHangting Chen, Jianwei Yu, Yi Luo et al.
Echo cancellation and noise reduction are essential for full-duplex communication, yet most existing neural networks have high computational costs and are inflexible in tuning model complexity. In this paper, we introduce time-frequency dual-path compression to achieve a wide range of compression ratios on computational cost. Specifically, for frequency compression, trainable filters are used to replace manually designed filters for dimension reduction. For time compression, only using frame skipped prediction causes large performance degradation, which can be alleviated by a post-processing network with full sequence modeling. We have found that under fixed compression ratios, dual-path compression combining both the time and frequency methods will give further performance improvement, covering compression ratios from 4x to 32x with little model size change. Moreover, the proposed models show competitive performance compared with fast FullSubNet and DeepFilterNet.

Swinv2-Imagen: Hierarchical Vision Transformer Diffusion Models for Text-to-Image GenerationRuijun Li, Weihua Li, Yi Yang et al.
Recently, diffusion models have been proven to perform remarkably well in text-to-image synthesis tasks in a number of studies, immediately presenting new study opportunities for image generation. Google's Imagen follows this research trend and outperforms DALLE2 as the best model for text-to-image generation. However, Imagen merely uses a T5 language model for text processing, which cannot ensure learning the semantic information of the text. Furthermore, the Efficient UNet leveraged by Imagen is not the best choice in image processing. To address these issues, we propose the Swinv2-Imagen, a novel text-to-image diffusion model based on a Hierarchical Visual Transformer and a Scene Graph incorporating a semantic layout. In the proposed model, the feature vectors of entities and relationships are extracted and involved in the diffusion model, effectively improving the quality of generated images. On top of that, we also introduce a Swin-Transformer-based UNet architecture, called Swinv2-Unet, which can address the problems stemming from the CNN convolution operations. Extensive experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed model by using three real-world datasets, i.e., MSCOCO, CUB and MM-CelebA-HQ. The experimental results show that the proposed Swinv2-Imagen model outperforms several popular state-of-the-art methods.
Anti-aliasing Predictive Coding Network for Future Video Frame PredictionChaofan Ling, Weihua Li, Junpei Zhong
We introduce here a predictive coding based model that aims to generate accurate and sharp future frames. Inspired by the predictive coding hypothesis and related works, the total model is updated through a combination of bottom-up and top-down information flows, which can enhance the interaction between different network levels. Most importantly, We propose and improve several artifacts to ensure that the neural networks generate clear and natural frames. Different inputs are no longer simply concatenated or added, they are calculated in a modulated manner to avoid being roughly fused. The downsampling and upsampling modules have been redesigned to ensure that the network can more easily construct images from Fourier features of low-frequency inputs. Additionally, the training strategies are also explored and improved to generate believable results and alleviate inconsistency between the input predicted frames and ground truth. Our proposals achieve results that better balance pixel accuracy and visualization effect.

Probing then Editing: A Push-Pull Framework for Retain-Free Machine Unlearning in Industrial IoTJiao Chen, Weihua Li, Jianhua Tang
In dynamic Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) environments, models need the ability to selectively forget outdated or erroneous knowledge. However, existing methods typically rely on retain data to constrain model behavior, which increases computational and energy burdens and conflicts with industrial data silos and privacy compliance requirements. To address this, we propose a novel retain-free unlearning framework, referred to as Probing then Editing (PTE). PTE frames unlearning as a probe-edit process: first, it probes the decision boundary neighborhood of the model on the to-be-forgotten class via gradient ascent and generates corresponding editing instructions using the model's own predictions. Subsequently, a push-pull collaborative optimization is performed: the push branch actively dismantles the decision region of the target class using the editing instructions, while the pull branch applies masked knowledge distillation to anchor the model's knowledge on retained classes to their original states. Benefiting from this mechanism, PTE achieves efficient and balanced knowledge editing using only the to-be-forgotten data and the original model. Experimental results demonstrate that PTE achieves an excellent balance between unlearning effectiveness and model utility across multiple general and industrial benchmarks such as CWRU and SCUT-FD.

KATSum: Knowledge-aware Abstractive Text SummarizationGuan Wang, Weihua Li, Edmund Lai et al.
Text Summarization is recognised as one of the NLP downstream tasks and it has been extensively investigated in recent years. It can assist people with perceiving the information rapidly from the Internet, including news articles, social posts, videos, etc. Most existing research works attempt to develop summarization models to produce a better output. However, advent limitations of most existing models emerge, including unfaithfulness and factual errors. In this paper, we propose a novel model, named as Knowledge-aware Abstractive Text Summarization, which leverages the advantages offered by Knowledge Graph to enhance the standard Seq2Seq model. On top of that, the Knowledge Graph triplets are extracted from the source text and utilised to provide keywords with relational information, producing coherent and factually errorless summaries. We conduct extensive experiments by using real-world data sets. The results reveal that the proposed framework can effectively utilise the information from Knowledge Graph and significantly reduce the factual errors in the summary.

Fully automated inverse co-optimization of templates and block copolymer blending recipes for DSA lithographyYuhao Zhou, Huangyan Shen, Qingliang Song et al.
The directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers (BCPs) offers a highly promising approach for the fabrication of contact holes or vertical interconnect access at sub-7nm technology nodes. To fabricate circular holes with precisely controlled size and positions, the self-assembly of block copolymers requires guidance from a properly designed template. Effectively parameterizing the template shape to enable efficient optimization remains a critical yet challenging problem. Moreover, the optimized template must possess excellent manufacturability for practical applications. In this work, we propose a Gaussian descriptor for characterizing the template shape with only two parameters. We further propose to use AB/AB binary blends instead of pure diblock copolymer to improve the adaptability of the block copolymer system to the template shape. The Bayesian optimization (BO) is applied to co-optimize the binary blend and the template shape. Our results demonstrate that BO based on the Gaussian descriptor can efficiently yield the optimal templates for diverse multi-hole patterns, all leading to highly matched self-assembled morphologies. Moreover, by imposing constraints on the variation of curvature of the template during optimization, superior manufacturability is ensured for each optimized template. It is noteworthy that each key parameter of the blend exhibits a relatively wide tunable window under the requirement of rather high precision. Our work provides valuable insights for advancing DSA technology, and thus potentially propels its practical applications forward.

AaKOS: Aspect-adaptive Knowledge-based Opinion SummarizationGuan Wang, Weihua Li, Edmund M-K. Lai et al.
The rapid growth of information on the Internet has led to an overwhelming amount of opinions and comments on various activities, products, and services. This makes it difficult and time-consuming for users to process all the available information when making decisions. Text summarization, a Natural Language Processing (NLP) task, has been widely explored to help users quickly retrieve relevant information by generating short and salient content from long or multiple documents. Recent advances in pre-trained language models, such as ChatGPT, have demonstrated the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) in text generation. However, LLMs require massive amounts of data and resources and are challenging to implement as offline applications. Furthermore, existing text summarization approaches often lack the ``adaptive" nature required to capture diverse aspects in opinion summarization, which is particularly detrimental to users with specific requirements or preferences. In this paper, we propose an Aspect-adaptive Knowledge-based Opinion Summarization model for product reviews, which effectively captures the adaptive nature required for opinion summarization. The model generates aspect-oriented summaries given a set of reviews for a particular product, efficiently providing users with useful information on specific aspects they are interested in, ensuring the generated summaries are more personalized and informative. Extensive experiments have been conducted using real-world datasets to evaluate the proposed model. The results demonstrate that our model outperforms state-of-the-art approaches and is adaptive and efficient in generating summaries that focus on particular aspects, enabling users to make well-informed decisions and catering to their diverse interests and preferences.

Kill Two Birds With One Stone: Boosting Both Object Detection Accuracy and Speed With adaptive Patch-of-Interest CompositionShihao Zhang, Weiyao Lin, Ping Lu et al.
Object detection is an important yet challenging task in video understanding & analysis, where one major challenge lies in the proper balance between two contradictive factors: detection accuracy and detection speed. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive patch-of-interest composition approach for boosting both the accuracy and speed for object detection. The proposed approach first extracts patches in a video frame which have the potential to include objects-of-interest. Then, an adaptive composition process is introduced to compose the extracted patches into an optimal number of sub-frames for object detection. With this process, we are able to maintain the resolution of the original frame during object detection (for guaranteeing the accuracy), while minimizing the number of inputs in detection (for boosting the speed). Experimental results on various datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
