A Comprehensive Survey on Trustworthy Recommender Systems

Wenqi Fan, Xiangyu Zhao, Xiao Chen et al.

As one of the most successful AI-powered applications, recommender systems aim to help people make appropriate decisions in an effective and efficient way, by providing personalized suggestions in many aspects of our lives, especially for various human-oriented online services such as e-commerce platforms and social media sites. In the past few decades, the rapid developments of recommender systems have significantly benefited human by creating economic value, saving time and effort, and promoting social good. However, recent studies have found that data-driven recommender systems can pose serious threats to users and society, such as spreading fake news to manipulate public opinion in social media sites, amplifying unfairness toward under-represented groups or individuals in job matching services, or inferring privacy information from recommendation results. Therefore, systems' trustworthiness has been attracting increasing attention from various aspects for mitigating negative impacts caused by recommender systems, so as to enhance the public's trust towards recommender systems techniques. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive overview of Trustworthy Recommender systems (TRec) with a specific focus on six of the most important aspects; namely, Safety & Robustness, Nondiscrimination & Fairness, Explainability, Privacy, Environmental Well-being, and Accountability & Auditability. For each aspect, we summarize the recent related technologies and discuss potential research directions to help achieve trustworthy recommender systems in the future.

IPA: Inference Pipeline Adaptation to Achieve High Accuracy and Cost-Efficiency

Saeid Ghafouri, Kamran Razavi, Mehran Salmani et al.

Efficiently optimizing multi-model inference pipelines for fast, accurate, and cost-effective inference is a crucial challenge in machine learning production systems, given their tight end-to-end latency requirements. To simplify the exploration of the vast and intricate trade-off space of latency, accuracy, and cost in inference pipelines, providers frequently opt to consider one of them. However, the challenge lies in reconciling latency, accuracy, and cost trade-offs. To address this challenge and propose a solution to efficiently manage model variants in inference pipelines, we present IPA, an online deep learning Inference Pipeline Adaptation system that efficiently leverages model variants for each deep learning task. Model variants are different versions of pre-trained models for the same deep learning task with variations in resource requirements, latency, and accuracy. IPA dynamically configures batch size, replication, and model variants to optimize accuracy, minimize costs, and meet user-defined latency Service Level Agreements (SLAs) using Integer Programming. It supports multi-objective settings for achieving different trade-offs between accuracy and cost objectives while remaining adaptable to varying workloads and dynamic traffic patterns. Navigating a wider variety of configurations allows \namex{} to achieve better trade-offs between cost and accuracy objectives compared to existing methods. Extensive experiments in a Kubernetes implementation with five real-world inference pipelines demonstrate that IPA improves end-to-end accuracy by up to 21% with a minimal cost increase. The code and data for replications are available at https://github.com/reconfigurable-ml-pipeline/ipa.

Uirapuru: Timely Video Analytics for High-Resolution Steerable Cameras on Edge Devices

Guilherme H. Apostolo, Pablo Bauszat, Vinod Nigade et al.

Real-time video analytics on high-resolution cameras has become a popular technology for various intelligent services like traffic control and crowd monitoring. While extensive work has been done on improving analytics accuracy with timing guarantees, virtually all of them target static viewpoint cameras. In this paper, we present Uirapuru, a novel framework for real-time, edge-based video analytics on high-resolution steerable cameras. The actuation performed by those cameras brings significant dynamism to the scene, presenting a critical challenge to existing popular approaches such as frame tiling. To address this problem, Uirapuru incorporates a comprehensive understanding of camera actuation into the system design paired with fast adaptive tiling at a per-frame level. We evaluate Uirapuru on a high-resolution video dataset, augmented by pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) movements typical for steerable cameras and on real-world videos collected from an actual PTZ camera. Our experimental results show that Uirapuru provides up to 1.45x improvement in accuracy while respecting specified latency budgets or reaches up to 4.53x inference speedup with on-par accuracy compared to state-of-the-art static camera approaches.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Resource Allocation for Cloud Native Wireless Network

Lin Wang, Jiasheng Wu, Yue Gao et al.

Cloud native technology has revolutionized 5G beyond and 6G communication networks, offering unprecedented levels of operational automation, flexibility, and adaptability. However, the vast array of cloud native services and applications presents a new challenge in resource allocation for dynamic cloud computing environments. To tackle this challenge, we investigate a cloud native wireless architecture that employs container-based virtualization to enable flexible service deployment. We then study two representative use cases: network slicing and Multi-Access Edge Computing. To optimize resource allocation in these scenarios, we leverage deep reinforcement learning techniques and introduce two model-free algorithms capable of monitoring the network state and dynamically training allocation policies. We validate the effectiveness of our algorithms in a testbed developed using Free5gc. Our findings demonstrate significant improvements in network efficiency, underscoring the potential of our proposed techniques in unlocking the full potential of cloud native wireless networks.

An Alternative Approach for Computing Discrete Logarithms in Compressed SIDH

Kaizhan Lin, Weize Wang, Lin Wang et al.

Currently, public-key compression of supersingular isogeny Diffie-Hellman (SIDH) and its variant, supersingular isogeny key encapsulation (SIKE) involve pairing computation and discrete logarithm computation. In this paper, we propose novel methods to compute only 3 discrete logarithms instead of 4, in exchange for computing a lookup table efficiently. The algorithms also allow us to make a trade-off between memory and efficiency. Our implementation shows that the efficiency of our algorithms is close to that of the previous work, and our algorithms perform better in some special cases.
