NTIRE 2022 Challenge on High Dynamic Range Imaging: Methods and Results

Eduardo Pérez-Pellitero, Sibi Catley-Chandar, Richard Shaw et al.

This paper reviews the challenge on constrained high dynamic range (HDR) imaging that was part of the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement (NTIRE) workshop, held in conjunction with CVPR 2022. This manuscript focuses on the competition set-up, datasets, the proposed methods and their results. The challenge aims at estimating an HDR image from multiple respective low dynamic range (LDR) observations, which might suffer from under- or over-exposed regions and different sources of noise. The challenge is composed of two tracks with an emphasis on fidelity and complexity constraints: In Track 1, participants are asked to optimize objective fidelity scores while imposing a low-complexity constraint (i.e. solutions can not exceed a given number of operations). In Track 2, participants are asked to minimize the complexity of their solutions while imposing a constraint on fidelity scores (i.e. solutions are required to obtain a higher fidelity score than the prescribed baseline). Both tracks use the same data and metrics: Fidelity is measured by means of PSNR with respect to a ground-truth HDR image (computed both directly and with a canonical tonemapping operation), while complexity metrics include the number of Multiply-Accumulate (MAC) operations and runtime (in seconds).

Efficient Progressive High Dynamic Range Image Restoration via Attention and Alignment Network

Gaocheng Yu, Jin Zhang, Zhe Ma et al.

HDR is an important part of computational photography technology. In this paper, we propose a lightweight neural network called Efficient Attention-and-alignment-guided Progressive Network (EAPNet) for the challenge NTIRE 2022 HDR Track 1 and Track 2. We introduce a multi-dimensional lightweight encoding module to extract features. Besides, we propose Progressive Dilated U-shape Block (PDUB) that can be a progressive plug-and-play module for dynamically tuning MAccs and PSNR. Finally, we use fast and low-power feature-align module to deal with misalignment problem in place of the time-consuming Deformable Convolutional Network (DCN). The experiments show that our method achieves about 20 times compression on MAccs with better mu-PSNR and PSNR compared to the state-of-the-art method. We got the second place of both two tracks during the testing phase. Figure1. shows the visualized result of NTIRE 2022 HDR challenge.

qNBO: quasi-Newton Meets Bilevel Optimization

Sheng Fang, Yong-Jin Liu, Wei Yao et al.

Bilevel optimization, addressing challenges in hierarchical learning tasks, has gained significant interest in machine learning. The practical implementation of the gradient descent method to bilevel optimization encounters computational hurdles, notably the computation of the exact lower-level solution and the inverse Hessian of the lower-level objective. Although these two aspects are inherently connected, existing methods typically handle them separately by solving the lower-level problem and a linear system for the inverse Hessian-vector product. In this paper, we introduce a general framework to address these computational challenges in a coordinated manner. Specifically, we leverage quasi-Newton algorithms to accelerate the resolution of the lower-level problem while efficiently approximating the inverse Hessian-vector product. Furthermore, by exploiting the superlinear convergence properties of BFGS, we establish the non-asymptotic convergence analysis of the BFGS adaptation within our framework. Numerical experiments demonstrate the comparable or superior performance of the proposed algorithms in real-world learning tasks, including hyperparameter optimization, data hyper-cleaning, and few-shot meta-learning.

IRGPT: Understanding Real-world Infrared Image with Bi-cross-modal Curriculum on Large-scale Benchmark

Zhe Cao, Jin Zhang, Ruiheng Zhang

Real-world infrared imagery presents unique challenges for vision-language models due to the scarcity of aligned text data and domain-specific characteristics. Although existing methods have advanced the field, their reliance on synthetic infrared images generated through style transfer from visible images, which limits their ability to capture the unique characteristics of the infrared modality. To address this, we propose IRGPT, the first multi-modal large language model for real-world infrared images, built upon a large-scale InfraRed-Text Dataset (IR-TD) comprising over 260K authentic image-text pairs. The proposed IR-TD dataset contains real infrared images paired with meticulously handcrafted texts, where the initial drafts originated from two complementary processes: (1) LLM-generated descriptions of visible images, and (2) rule-based descriptions of annotations. Furthermore, we introduce a bi-cross-modal curriculum transfer learning strategy that systematically transfers knowledge from visible to infrared domains by considering the difficulty scores of both infrared-visible and infrared-text. Evaluated on a benchmark of 9 tasks (e.g., recognition, grounding), IRGPT achieves state-of-the-art performance even compared with larger-scale models.

A Provably Convergent Plug-and-Play Framework for Stochastic Bilevel Optimization

Tianshu Chu, Dachuan Xu, Wei Yao et al.

Bilevel optimization has recently attracted significant attention in machine learning due to its wide range of applications and advanced hierarchical optimization capabilities. In this paper, we propose a plug-and-play framework, named PnPBO, for developing and analyzing stochastic bilevel optimization methods. This framework integrates both modern unbiased and biased stochastic estimators into the single-loop bilevel optimization framework introduced in [9], with several improvements. In the implementation of PnPBO, all stochastic estimators for different variables can be independently incorporated, and an additional moving average technique is applied when using an unbiased estimator for the upper-level variable. In the theoretical analysis, we provide a unified convergence and complexity analysis for PnPBO, demonstrating that the adaptation of various stochastic estimators (including PAGE, ZeroSARAH, and mixed strategies) within the PnPBO framework achieves optimal sample complexity, comparable to that of single-level optimization. This resolves the open question of whether the optimal complexity bounds for solving bilevel optimization are identical to those for single-level optimization. Finally, we empirically validate our framework, demonstrating its effectiveness on several benchmark problems and confirming our theoretical findings.
