A Simple and Effective Framework for Pairwise Deep Metric Learning

Qi Qi, Yan Yan, Xiaoyu Wang et al.

Deep metric learning (DML) has received much attention in deep learning due to its wide applications in computer vision. Previous studies have focused on designing complicated losses and hard example mining methods, which are mostly heuristic and lack of theoretical understanding. In this paper, we cast DML as a simple pairwise binary classification problem that classifies a pair of examples as similar or dissimilar. It identifies the most critical issue in this problem--imbalanced data pairs. To tackle this issue, we propose a simple and effective framework to sample pairs in a batch of data for updating the model. The key to this framework is to define a robust loss for all pairs over a mini-batch of data, which is formulated by distributionally robust optimization. The flexibility in constructing the uncertainty decision set of the dual variable allows us to recover state-of-the-art complicated losses and also to induce novel variants. Empirical studies on several benchmark data sets demonstrate that our simple and effective method outperforms the state-of-the-art results. SGUIE-Net: Semantic Attention Guided Underwater Image Enhancement with Multi-Scale Perception

Qi Qi, Kunqian Li, Haiyong Zheng et al.

Due to the wavelength-dependent light attenuation, refraction and scattering, underwater images usually suffer from color distortion and blurred details. However, due to the limited number of paired underwater images with undistorted images as reference, training deep enhancement models for diverse degradation types is quite difficult. To boost the performance of data-driven approaches, it is essential to establish more effective learning mechanisms that mine richer supervised information from limited training sample resources. In this paper, we propose a novel underwater image enhancement network, called SGUIE-Net, in which we introduce semantic information as high-level guidance across different images that share common semantic regions. Accordingly, we propose semantic region-wise enhancement module to perceive the degradation of different semantic regions from multiple scales and feed it back to the global attention features extracted from its original scale. This strategy helps to achieve robust and visually pleasant enhancements to different semantic objects, which should thanks to the guidance of semantic information for differentiated enhancement. More importantly, for those degradation types that are not common in the training sample distribution, the guidance connects them with the already well-learned types according to their semantic relevance. Extensive experiments on the publicly available datasets and our proposed dataset demonstrated the impressive performance of SGUIE-Net. A Deep Tree-Structured Fusion Model for Single Image Deraining

Xueyang Fu, Qi Qi, Yue Huang et al.

We propose a simple yet effective deep tree-structured fusion model based on feature aggregation for the deraining problem. We argue that by effectively aggregating features, a relatively simple network can still handle tough image deraining problems well. First, to capture the spatial structure of rain we use dilated convolutions as our basic network block. We then design a tree-structured fusion architecture which is deployed within each block (spatial information) and across all blocks (content information). Our method is based on the assumption that adjacent features contain redundant information. This redundancy obstructs generation of new representations and can be reduced by hierarchically fusing adjacent features. Thus, the proposed model is more compact and can effectively use spatial and content information. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets show that our network achieves better deraining results with fewer parameters.
