Learning-based 3D Reconstruction in Autonomous Driving: A Comprehensive Survey

Liewen Liao, Weihao Yan, Ming Yang et al.

Learning-based 3D reconstruction has emerged as a transformative technique in autonomous driving, enabling precise modeling of both dynamic and static environments through advanced neural representations. Despite data augmentation, 3D reconstruction inspires pioneering solution for vital tasks in the field of autonomous driving, such as scene understanding and closed-loop simulation. We investigates the details of 3D reconstruction and conducts a multi-perspective, in-depth analysis of recent advancements. Specifically, we first provide a systematic introduction of preliminaries, including data modalities, benchmarks and technical preliminaries of learning-based 3D reconstruction, facilitating instant identification of suitable methods according to sensor suites. Then, we systematically review learning-based 3D reconstruction methods in autonomous driving, categorizing approaches by subtasks and conducting multi-dimensional analysis and summary to establish a comprehensive technical reference. The development trends and existing challenges are summarized in the context of learning-based 3D reconstruction in autonomous driving. We hope that our review will inspire future researches.

LighTN: Light-weight Transformer Network for Performance-overhead Tradeoff in Point Cloud Downsampling

Xu Wang, Yi Jin, Yigang Cen et al.

Compared with traditional task-irrelevant downsampling methods, task-oriented neural networks have shown improved performance in point cloud downsampling range. Recently, Transformer family of networks has shown a more powerful learning capacity in visual tasks. However, Transformer-based architectures potentially consume too many resources which are usually worthless for low overhead task networks in downsampling range. This paper proposes a novel light-weight Transformer network (LighTN) for task-oriented point cloud downsampling, as an end-to-end and plug-and-play solution. In LighTN, a single-head self-correlation module is presented to extract refined global contextual features, where three projection matrices are simultaneously eliminated to save resource overhead, and the output of symmetric matrix satisfies the permutation invariant. Then, we design a novel downsampling loss function to guide LighTN focuses on critical point cloud regions with more uniform distribution and prominent points coverage. Furthermore, We introduce a feed-forward network scaling mechanism to enhance the learnable capacity of LighTN according to the expand-reduce strategy. The result of extensive experiments on classification and registration tasks demonstrates LighTN can achieve state-of-the-art performance with limited resource overhead.

Coordinating Collaborative Chat in Massive Open Online Courses

Gaurav Singh Tomar, Sreecharan Sankaranarayanan, Xu Wang et al.

An earlier study of a collaborative chat intervention in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) identified negative effects on attrition stemming from a requirement for students to be matched with exactly one partner prior to beginning the activity. That study raised questions about how to orchestrate a collaborative chat intervention in a MOOC context in order to provide the benefit of synchronous social engagement without the coordination difficulties. In this paper we present a careful analysis of an intervention designed to overcome coordination difficulties by welcoming students into the chat on a rolling basis as they arrive rather than requiring them to be matched with a partner before beginning. The results suggest the most positive impact when experiencing a chat with exactly one partner rather than more or less. A qualitative analysis of the chat data reveals differential experiences between these configurations that suggests a potential explanation for the effect and raises questions for future research.
