Line Art Correlation Matching Feature Transfer Network for Automatic Animation ColorizationZhang Qian, Wang Bo, Wen Wei et al.
Automatic animation line art colorization is a challenging computer vision problem, since the information of the line art is highly sparse and abstracted and there exists a strict requirement for the color and style consistency between frames. Recently, a lot of Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) based image-to-image translation methods for single line art colorization have emerged. They can generate perceptually appealing results conditioned on line art images. However, these methods can not be adopted for the purpose of animation colorization because there is a lack of consideration of the in-between frame consistency. Existing methods simply input the previous colored frame as a reference to color the next line art, which will mislead the colorization due to the spatial misalignment of the previous colored frame and the next line art especially at positions where apparent changes happen. To address these challenges, we design a kind of correlation matching feature transfer model (called CMFT) to align the colored reference feature in a learnable way and integrate the model into an U-Net based generator in a coarse-to-fine manner. This enables the generator to transfer the layer-wise synchronized features from the deep semantic code to the content progressively. Extension evaluation shows that CMFT model can effectively improve the in-between consistency and the quality of colored frames especially when the motion is intense and diverse.
SAUNet: Shape Attentive U-Net for Interpretable Medical Image SegmentationJesse Sun, Fatemeh Darbehani, Mark Zaidi et al.
Medical image segmentation is a difficult but important task for many clinical operations such as cardiac bi-ventricular volume estimation. More recently, there has been a shift to utilizing deep learning and fully convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to perform image segmentation that has yielded state-of-the-art results in many public benchmark datasets. Despite the progress of deep learning in medical image segmentation, standard CNNs are still not fully adopted in clinical settings as they lack robustness and interpretability. Shapes are generally more meaningful features than solely textures of images, which are features regular CNNs learn, causing a lack of robustness. Likewise, previous works surrounding model interpretability have been focused on post hoc gradient-based saliency methods. However, gradient-based saliency methods typically require additional computations post hoc and have been shown to be unreliable for interpretability. Thus, we present a new architecture called Shape Attentive U-Net (SAUNet) which focuses on model interpretability and robustness. The proposed architecture attempts to address these limitations by the use of a secondary shape stream that captures rich shape-dependent information in parallel with the regular texture stream. Furthermore, we suggest multi-resolution saliency maps can be learned using our dual-attention decoder module which allows for multi-level interpretability and mitigates the need for additional computations post hoc. Our method also achieves state-of-the-art results on the two large public cardiac MRI image segmentation datasets of SUN09 and AC17.

Companion Surface of Danger Cylinder and its Role in Solution Variation of P3P ProblemBo wang, Hao Hu, Caixia Zhang
Traditionally the danger cylinder is intimately related to the solution stability in P3P problem. In this work, we show that the danger cylinder is also closely related to the multiple-solution phenomenon. More specifically, we show when the optical center lies on the danger cylinder, of the 3 possible P3P solutions, i.e., one double solution, and two other solutions, the optical center of the double solution still lies on the danger cylinder, but the optical centers of the other two solutions no longer lie on the danger cylinder. And when the optical center moves on the danger cylinder, accordingly the optical centers of the two other solutions of the corresponding P3P problem form a new surface, characterized by a polynomial equation of degree 12 in the optical center coordinates, called the Companion Surface of Danger Cylinder (CSDC). That means the danger cylinder always has a companion surface. For the significance of CSDC, we show that when the optical center passes through the CSDC, the number of solutions of P3P problem must change by 2. That means CSDC acts as a delimitating surface of the P3P solution space. These new findings shed some new lights on the P3P multi-solution phenomenon, an important issue in PnP study.

Single-Shot Object Detection with Enriched SemanticsZhishuai Zhang, Siyuan Qiao, Cihang Xie et al.
We propose a novel single shot object detection network named Detection with Enriched Semantics (DES). Our motivation is to enrich the semantics of object detection features within a typical deep detector, by a semantic segmentation branch and a global activation module. The segmentation branch is supervised by weak segmentation ground-truth, i.e., no extra annotation is required. In conjunction with that, we employ a global activation module which learns relationship between channels and object classes in a self-supervised manner. Comprehensive experimental results on both PASCAL VOC and MS COCO detection datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. In particular, with a VGG16 based DES, we achieve an mAP of 81.7 on VOC2007 test and an mAP of 32.8 on COCO test-dev with an inference speed of 31.5 milliseconds per image on a Titan Xp GPU. With a lower resolution version, we achieve an mAP of 79.7 on VOC2007 with an inference speed of 13.0 milliseconds per image.
