MARBLE: Music Audio Representation Benchmark for Universal EvaluationRuibin Yuan, Yinghao Ma, Yizhi Li et al. · deepmind, mila
In the era of extensive intersection between art and Artificial Intelligence (AI), such as image generation and fiction co-creation, AI for music remains relatively nascent, particularly in music understanding. This is evident in the limited work on deep music representations, the scarcity of large-scale datasets, and the absence of a universal and community-driven benchmark. To address this issue, we introduce the Music Audio Representation Benchmark for universaL Evaluation, termed MARBLE. It aims to provide a benchmark for various Music Information Retrieval (MIR) tasks by defining a comprehensive taxonomy with four hierarchy levels, including acoustic, performance, score, and high-level description. We then establish a unified protocol based on 14 tasks on 8 public-available datasets, providing a fair and standard assessment of representations of all open-sourced pre-trained models developed on music recordings as baselines. Besides, MARBLE offers an easy-to-use, extendable, and reproducible suite for the community, with a clear statement on copyright issues on datasets. Results suggest recently proposed large-scale pre-trained musical language models perform the best in most tasks, with room for further improvement. The leaderboard and toolkit repository are published at https://marble-bm.shef.ac.uk to promote future music AI research.
Efficient Climate Simulation via Machine Learning MethodXin Wang, Wei Xue, Yilun Han et al.
Hybrid modeling combining data-driven techniques and numerical methods is an emerging and promising research direction for efficient climate simulation. However, previous works lack practical platforms, making developing hybrid modeling a challenging programming problem. Furthermore, the lack of standard data sets and evaluation metrics may hamper researchers from comprehensively comparing various algorithms under a uniform condition. To address these problems, we propose a framework called NeuroClim for hybrid modeling under the real-world scenario, a basic setting to simulate the real climate that we live in. NeuroClim consists of three parts: (1) Platform. We develop a user-friendly platform NeuroGCM for efficiently developing hybrid modeling in climate simulation. (2) Dataset. We provide an open-source dataset for data-driven methods in hybrid modeling. We investigate the characteristics of the data, i.e., heterogeneity and stiffness, which reveals the difficulty of regressing climate simulation data; (3) Metrics. We propose a methodology for quantitatively evaluating hybrid modeling, including the approximation ability of machine learning models and the stability during simulation. We believe that NeuroClim allows researchers to work without high level of climate-related expertise and focus only on machine learning algorithm design, which will accelerate hybrid modeling research in the AI-Climate intersection. The codes and data are released at https://github.com/x-w19/NeuroClim.
ViDA: Homeostatic Visual Domain Adapter for Continual Test Time AdaptationJiaming Liu, Senqiao Yang, Peidong Jia et al.
Since real-world machine systems are running in non-stationary environments, Continual Test-Time Adaptation (CTTA) task is proposed to adapt the pre-trained model to continually changing target domains. Recently, existing methods mainly focus on model-based adaptation, which aims to leverage a self-training manner to extract the target domain knowledge. However, pseudo labels can be noisy and the updated model parameters are unreliable under dynamic data distributions, leading to error accumulation and catastrophic forgetting in the continual adaptation process. To tackle these challenges and maintain the model plasticity, we design a Visual Domain Adapter (ViDA) for CTTA, explicitly handling both domain-specific and domain-shared knowledge. Specifically, we first comprehensively explore the different domain representations of the adapters with trainable high-rank or low-rank embedding spaces. Then we inject ViDAs into the pre-trained model, which leverages high-rank and low-rank features to adapt the current domain distribution and maintain the continual domain-shared knowledge, respectively. To exploit the low-rank and high-rank ViDAs more effectively, we further propose a Homeostatic Knowledge Allotment (HKA) strategy, which adaptively combines different knowledge from each ViDA. Extensive experiments conducted on four widely used benchmarks demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance in both classification and segmentation CTTA tasks. Note that, our method can be regarded as a novel transfer paradigm for large-scale models, delivering promising results in adaptation to continually changing distributions. Masked Spatial-Spectral Autoencoders Are Excellent Hyperspectral DefendersJiahao Qi, Zhiqiang Gong, Xingyue Liu et al.
Deep learning methodology contributes a lot to the development of hyperspectral image (HSI) analysis community. However, it also makes HSI analysis systems vulnerable to adversarial attacks. To this end, we propose a masked spatial-spectral autoencoder (MSSA) in this paper under self-supervised learning theory, for enhancing the robustness of HSI analysis systems. First, a masked sequence attention learning module is conducted to promote the inherent robustness of HSI analysis systems along spectral channel. Then, we develop a graph convolutional network with learnable graph structure to establish global pixel-wise combinations. In this way, the attack effect would be dispersed by all the related pixels among each combination, and a better defense performance is achievable in spatial aspect. Finally, to improve the defense transferability and address the problem of limited labelled samples, MSSA employs spectra reconstruction as a pretext task and fits the datasets in a self-supervised manner.Comprehensive experiments over three benchmarks verify the effectiveness of MSSA in comparison with the state-of-the-art hyperspectral classification methods and representative adversarial defense strategies.
HiPrompt: Tuning-free Higher-Resolution Generation with Hierarchical MLLM PromptsXinyu Liu, Yingqing He, Lanqing Guo et al.
The potential for higher-resolution image generation using pretrained diffusion models is immense, yet these models often struggle with issues of object repetition and structural artifacts especially when scaling to 4K resolution and higher. We figure out that the problem is caused by that, a single prompt for the generation of multiple scales provides insufficient efficacy. In response, we propose HiPrompt, a new tuning-free solution that tackles the above problems by introducing hierarchical prompts. The hierarchical prompts offer both global and local guidance. Specifically, the global guidance comes from the user input that describes the overall content, while the local guidance utilizes patch-wise descriptions from MLLMs to elaborately guide the regional structure and texture generation. Furthermore, during the inverse denoising process, the generated noise is decomposed into low- and high-frequency spatial components. These components are conditioned on multiple prompt levels, including detailed patch-wise descriptions and broader image-level prompts, facilitating prompt-guided denoising under hierarchical semantic guidance. It further allows the generation to focus more on local spatial regions and ensures the generated images maintain coherent local and global semantics, structures, and textures with high definition. Extensive experiments demonstrate that HiPrompt outperforms state-of-the-art works in higher-resolution image generation, significantly reducing object repetition and enhancing structural quality.

RECIST Weakly Supervised Lesion Segmentation via Label-Space Co-TrainingLianyu Zhou, Dong Wei, Donghuan Lu et al.
As an essential indicator for cancer progression and treatment response, tumor size is often measured following the response evaluation criteria in solid tumors (RECIST) guideline in CT slices. By marking each lesion with its longest axis and the longest perpendicular one, laborious pixel-wise manual annotation can be avoided. However, such a coarse substitute cannot provide a rich and accurate base to allow versatile quantitative analysis of lesions. To this end, we propose a novel weakly supervised framework to exploit the existing rich RECIST annotations for pixel-wise lesion segmentation. Specifically, a pair of under- and over-segmenting masks are constructed for each lesion based on its RECIST annotation and served as the label for co-training a pair of subnets, respectively, along with the proposed label-space perturbation induced consistency loss to bridge the gap between the two subnets and enable effective co-training. Extensive experiments are conducted on a public dataset to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed framework regarding the RECIST-based weakly supervised segmentation task and its universal applicability to various backbone networks.

Transferable Physical Attack against Object Detection with Separable AttentionYu Zhang, Zhiqiang Gong, Yichuang Zhang et al.
Transferable adversarial attack is always in the spotlight since deep learning models have been demonstrated to be vulnerable to adversarial samples. However, existing physical attack methods do not pay enough attention on transferability to unseen models, thus leading to the poor performance of black-box attack. In this paper, we put forward a novel method of generating physically realizable adversarial camouflage to achieve transferable attack against detection models. More specifically, we first introduce multi-scale attention maps based on detection models to capture features of objects with various resolutions. Meanwhile, we adopt a sequence of composite transformations to obtain the averaged attention maps, which could curb model-specific noise in the attention and thus further boost transferability. Unlike the general visualization interpretation methods where model attention should be put on the foreground object as much as possible, we carry out attack on separable attention from the opposite perspective, i.e. suppressing attention of the foreground and enhancing that of the background. Consequently, transferable adversarial camouflage could be yielded efficiently with our novel attention-based loss function. Extensive comparison experiments verify the superiority of our method to state-of-the-art methods.

Pathway to Future Symbiotic CreativityYike Guo, Qifeng Liu, Jie Chen et al.
This report presents a comprehensive view of our vision on the development path of the human-machine symbiotic art creation. We propose a classification of the creative system with a hierarchy of 5 classes, showing the pathway of creativity evolving from a mimic-human artist (Turing Artists) to a Machine artist in its own right. We begin with an overview of the limitations of the Turing Artists then focus on the top two-level systems, Machine Artists, emphasizing machine-human communication in art creation. In art creation, it is necessary for machines to understand humans' mental states, including desires, appreciation, and emotions, humans also need to understand machines' creative capabilities and limitations. The rapid development of immersive environment and further evolution into the new concept of metaverse enable symbiotic art creation through unprecedented flexibility of bi-directional communication between artists and art manifestation environments. By examining the latest sensor and XR technologies, we illustrate the novel way for art data collection to constitute the base of a new form of human-machine bidirectional communication and understanding in art creation. Based on such communication and understanding mechanisms, we propose a novel framework for building future Machine artists, which comes with the philosophy that a human-compatible AI system should be based on the "human-in-the-loop" principle rather than the traditional "end-to-end" dogma. By proposing a new form of inverse reinforcement learning model, we outline the platform design of machine artists, demonstrate its functions and showcase some examples of technologies we have developed. We also provide a systematic exposition of the ecosystem for AI-based symbiotic art form and community with an economic model built on NFT technology. Ethical issues for the development of machine artists are also discussed.
Entire Chain Uplift Modeling with Context-Enhanced Learning for Intelligent MarketingYinqiu Huang, Shuli Wang, Min Gao et al.
Uplift modeling, vital in online marketing, seeks to accurately measure the impact of various strategies, such as coupons or discounts, on different users by predicting the Individual Treatment Effect (ITE). In an e-commerce setting, user behavior follows a defined sequential chain, including impression, click, and conversion. Marketing strategies exert varied uplift effects at each stage within this chain, impacting metrics like click-through and conversion rate. Despite its utility, existing research has neglected to consider the inter-task across all stages impacts within a specific treatment and has insufficiently utilized the treatment information, potentially introducing substantial bias into subsequent marketing decisions. We identify these two issues as the chain-bias problem and the treatment-unadaptive problem. This paper introduces the Entire Chain UPlift method with context-enhanced learning (ECUP), devised to tackle these issues. ECUP consists of two primary components: 1) the Entire Chain-Enhanced Network, which utilizes user behavior patterns to estimate ITE throughout the entire chain space, models the various impacts of treatments on each task, and integrates task prior information to enhance context awareness across all stages, capturing the impact of treatment on different tasks, and 2) the Treatment-Enhanced Network, which facilitates fine-grained treatment modeling through bit-level feature interactions, thereby enabling adaptive feature adjustment. Extensive experiments on public and industrial datasets validate ECUPs effectiveness. Moreover, ECUP has been deployed on the Meituan food delivery platform, serving millions of daily active users, with the related dataset released for future research.
Insert or Attach: Taxonomy Completion via Box EmbeddingWei Xue, Yongliang Shen, Wenqi Ren et al.
Taxonomy completion, enriching existing taxonomies by inserting new concepts as parents or attaching them as children, has gained significant interest. Previous approaches embed concepts as vectors in Euclidean space, which makes it difficult to model asymmetric relations in taxonomy. In addition, they introduce pseudo-leaves to convert attachment cases into insertion cases, leading to an incorrect bias in network learning dominated by numerous pseudo-leaves. Addressing these, our framework, TaxBox, leverages box containment and center closeness to design two specialized geometric scorers within the box embedding space. These scorers are tailored for insertion and attachment operations and can effectively capture intrinsic relationships between concepts by optimizing on a granular box constraint loss. We employ a dynamic ranking loss mechanism to balance the scores from these scorers, allowing adaptive adjustments of insertion and attachment scores. Experiments on four real-world datasets show that TaxBox significantly outperforms previous methods, yielding substantial improvements over prior methods in real-world datasets, with average performance boosts of 6.7%, 34.9%, and 51.4% in MRR, Hit@1, and Prec@1, respectively.
CoMoSpeech: One-Step Speech and Singing Voice Synthesis via Consistency ModelZhen Ye, Wei Xue, Xu Tan et al.
Denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPMs) have shown promising performance for speech synthesis. However, a large number of iterative steps are required to achieve high sample quality, which restricts the inference speed. Maintaining sample quality while increasing sampling speed has become a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a "Co"nsistency "Mo"del-based "Speech" synthesis method, CoMoSpeech, which achieve speech synthesis through a single diffusion sampling step while achieving high audio quality. The consistency constraint is applied to distill a consistency model from a well-designed diffusion-based teacher model, which ultimately yields superior performances in the distilled CoMoSpeech. Our experiments show that by generating audio recordings by a single sampling step, the CoMoSpeech achieves an inference speed more than 150 times faster than real-time on a single NVIDIA A100 GPU, which is comparable to FastSpeech2, making diffusion-sampling based speech synthesis truly practical. Meanwhile, objective and subjective evaluations on text-to-speech and singing voice synthesis show that the proposed teacher models yield the best audio quality, and the one-step sampling based CoMoSpeech achieves the best inference speed with better or comparable audio quality to other conventional multi-step diffusion model baselines. Stereo Matching with Cost Volume based Sparse Disparity PropagationWei Xue, Xiaojiang Peng
Stereo matching is crucial for binocular stereo vision. Existing methods mainly focus on simple disparity map fusion to improve stereo matching, which require multiple dense or sparse disparity maps. In this paper, we propose a simple yet novel scheme, termed feature disparity propagation, to improve general stereo matching based on matching cost volume and sparse matching feature points. Specifically, our scheme first calculates a reliable sparse disparity map by local feature matching, and then refines the disparity map by propagating reliable disparities to neighboring pixels in the matching cost domain. In addition, considering the gradient and multi-scale information of local disparity regions, we present a $ρ$-Census cost measure based on the well-known AD-Census, which guarantees the robustness of cost volume even without the cost aggregation step. Extensive experiments on Middlebury stereo benchmark V3 demonstrate that our scheme achieves promising performance comparable to state-of-the-art methods.
