Geometric Pooling: maintaining more useful information

Hao Xu, Jia Liu, Yang Shen et al.

Graph Pooling technology plays an important role in graph node classification tasks. Sorting pooling technologies maintain large-value units for pooling graphs of varying sizes. However, by analyzing the statistical characteristic of activated units after pooling, we found that a large number of units dropped by sorting pooling are negative-value units that contain useful information and can contribute considerably to the final decision. To maintain more useful information, a novel pooling technology, called Geometric Pooling (GP), was proposed to contain the unique node features with negative values by measuring the similarity of all node features. We reveal the effectiveness of GP from the entropy reduction view. The experiments were conducted on TUdatasets to show the effectiveness of GP. The results showed that the proposed GP outperforms the SOTA graph pooling technologies by 1%\sim5% with fewer parameters.

Leveraging Two Reference Functions in Block Bregman Proximal Gradient Descent for Non-convex and Non-Lipschitz Problems

Tianxiang Gao, Songtao Lu, Jia Liu et al.

In the applications of signal processing and data analytics, there is a wide class of non-convex problems whose objective function is freed from the common global Lipschitz continuous gradient assumption (e.g., the nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) problem). Recently, this type of problem with some certain special structures has been solved by Bregman proximal gradient (BPG). This inspires us to propose a new Block-wise two-references Bregman proximal gradient (B2B) method, which adopts two reference functions so that a closed-form solution in the Bregman projection is obtained. Based on the relative smoothness, we prove the global convergence of the proposed algorithms for various block selection rules. In particular, we establish the global convergence rate of $O(\frac{\sqrt{s}}{\sqrt{k}})$ for the greedy and randomized block updating rule for B2B, which is $O(\sqrt{s})$ times faster than the cyclic variant, i.e., $O(\frac{s}{\sqrt{k}} )$, where $s$ is the number of blocks, and $k$ is the number of iterations. Multiple numerical results are provided to illustrate the superiority of the proposed B2B compared to the state-of-the-art works in solving NMF problems.

Detecting Cyberattacks in Industrial Control Systems Using Online Learning Algorithms

Guangxia Lia, Yulong Shena, Peilin Zhaob et al.

Industrial control systems are critical to the operation of industrial facilities, especially for critical infrastructures, such as refineries, power grids, and transportation systems. Similar to other information systems, a significant threat to industrial control systems is the attack from cyberspace---the offensive maneuvers launched by "anonymous" in the digital world that target computer-based assets with the goal of compromising a system's functions or probing for information. Owing to the importance of industrial control systems, and the possibly devastating consequences of being attacked, significant endeavors have been attempted to secure industrial control systems from cyberattacks. Among them are intrusion detection systems that serve as the first line of defense by monitoring and reporting potentially malicious activities. Classical machine-learning-based intrusion detection methods usually generate prediction models by learning modest-sized training samples all at once. Such approach is not always applicable to industrial control systems, as industrial control systems must process continuous control commands with limited computational resources in a nonstop way. To satisfy such requirements, we propose using online learning to learn prediction models from the controlling data stream. We introduce several state-of-the-art online learning algorithms categorically, and illustrate their efficacies on two typically used testbeds---power system and gas pipeline. Further, we explore a new cost-sensitive online learning algorithm to solve the class-imbalance problem that is pervasive in industrial intrusion detection systems. Our experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm can achieve an overall improvement in the detection rate of cyberattacks in industrial control systems.
