Large-Scale and Multi-Perspective Opinion Summarization with Diverse Review Subsets

Han Jiang, Rui Wang, Zhihua Wei et al.

Opinion summarization is expected to digest larger review sets and provide summaries from different perspectives. However, most existing solutions are deficient in epitomizing extensive reviews and offering opinion summaries from various angles due to the lack of designs for information selection. To this end, we propose SUBSUMM, a supervised summarization framework for large-scale multi-perspective opinion summarization. SUBSUMM consists of a review sampling strategy set and a two-stage training scheme. The sampling strategies take sentiment orientation and contrastive information value into consideration, with which the review subsets from different perspectives and quality levels can be selected. Subsequently, the summarizer is encouraged to learn from the sub-optimal and optimal subsets successively in order to capitalize on the massive input. Experimental results on AmaSum and Rotten Tomatoes datasets demonstrate that SUBSUMM is adept at generating pros, cons, and verdict summaries from hundreds of input reviews. Furthermore, our in-depth analysis verifies that the advanced selection of review subsets and the two-stage training scheme are vital to boosting the summarization performance.

Toward distortion-aware change detection in realistic scenarios

Yitao Zhao, Heng-Chao Li, Nanqing Liu et al.

In the conventional change detection (CD) pipeline, two manually registered and labeled remote sensing datasets serve as the input of the model for training and prediction. However, in realistic scenarios, data from different periods or sensors could fail to be aligned as a result of various coordinate systems. Geometric distortion caused by coordinate shifting remains a thorny issue for CD algorithms. In this paper, we propose a reusable self-supervised framework for bitemporal geometric distortion in CD tasks. The whole framework is composed of Pretext Representation Pre-training, Bitemporal Image Alignment, and Down-stream Decoder Fine-Tuning. With only single-stage pre-training, the key components of the framework can be reused for assistance in the bitemporal image alignment, while simultaneously enhancing the performance of the CD decoder. Experimental results in 2 large-scale realistic scenarios demonstrate that our proposed method can alleviate the bitemporal geometric distortion in CD tasks.

Time Series Forecastability Measures

Rui Wang, Steven Klee, Alexis Roos

This paper proposes using two metrics to quantify the forecastability of time series prior to model development: the spectral predictability score and the largest Lyapunov exponent. Unlike traditional model evaluation metrics, these measures assess the inherent forecastability characteristics of the data before any forecast attempts. The spectral predictability score evaluates the strength and regularity of frequency components in the time series, whereas the Lyapunov exponents quantify the chaos and stability of the system generating the data. We evaluated the effectiveness of these metrics on both synthetic and real-world time series from the M5 forecast competition dataset. Our results demonstrate that these two metrics can correctly reflect the inherent forecastability of a time series and have a strong correlation with the actual forecast performance of various models. By understanding the inherent forecastability of time series before model training, practitioners can focus their planning efforts on products and supply chain levels that are more forecastable, while setting appropriate expectations or seeking alternative strategies for products with limited forecastability.
