GeoGauss: Strongly Consistent and Light-Coordinated OLTP for Geo-Replicated SQL Database

Weixing Zhou, Qi Peng, Zijie Zhang et al.

Multinational enterprises conduct global business that has a demand for geo-distributed transactional databases. Existing state-of-the-art databases adopt a sharded master-follower replication architecture. However, the single-master serving mode incurs massive cross-region writes from clients, and the sharded architecture requires multiple round-trip acknowledgments (e.g., 2PC) to ensure atomicity for cross-shard transactions. These limitations drive us to seek yet another design choice. In this paper, we propose a strongly consistent OLTP database GeoGauss with full replica multi-master architecture. To efficiently merge the updates from different master nodes, we propose a multi-master OCC that unifies data replication and concurrent transaction processing. By leveraging an epoch-based delta state merge rule and the optimistic asynchronous execution, GeoGauss ensures strong consistency with light-coordinated protocol and allows more concurrency with weak isolation, which are sufficient to meet our needs. Our geo-distributed experimental results show that GeoGauss achieves 7.06X higher throughput and 17.41X lower latency than the state-of-the-art geo-distributed database CockroachDB on the TPC-C benchmark.

Prompt-Assisted Semantic Interference Cancellation on Moderate Interference Channels

Zian Meng, Qiang Li, Ashish Pandharipande et al.

The performance of conventional interference management strategies degrades when interference power is comparable to signal power. We consider a new perspective on interference management using semantic communication. Specifically, a multi-user semantic communication system is considered on moderate interference channels (ICs), for which a novel framework of deep learning-based prompt-assisted semantic interference cancellation (DeepPASIC) is proposed. Each transmitted signal is partitioned into common and private parts. The common parts of different users are transmitted simultaneously in a shared medium, resulting in superposition. The private part, on the other hand, serves as a prompt to assist in canceling the interference suffered by the common part at the semantic level. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed DeepPASIC outperforms conventional interference management strategies under moderate interference conditions.

MonoPCC: Photometric-invariant Cycle Constraint for Monocular Depth Estimation of Endoscopic Images

Zhiwei Wang, Ying Zhou, Shiquan He et al.

Photometric constraint is indispensable for self-supervised monocular depth estimation. It involves warping a source image onto a target view using estimated depth&pose, and then minimizing the difference between the warped and target images. However, the endoscopic built-in light causes significant brightness fluctuations, and thus makes the photometric constraint unreliable. Previous efforts only mitigate this relying on extra models to calibrate image brightness. In this paper, we propose MonoPCC to address the brightness inconsistency radically by reshaping the photometric constraint into a cycle form. Instead of only warping the source image, MonoPCC constructs a closed loop consisting of two opposite forward-backward warping paths: from target to source and then back to target. Thus, the target image finally receives an image cycle-warped from itself, which naturally makes the constraint invariant to brightness changes. Moreover, MonoPCC transplants the source image's phase-frequency into the intermediate warped image to avoid structure lost, and also stabilizes the training via an exponential moving average (EMA) strategy to avoid frequent changes in the forward warping. The comprehensive and extensive experimental results on four endoscopic datasets demonstrate that our proposed MonoPCC shows a great robustness to the brightness inconsistency, and exceeds other state-of-the-arts by reducing the absolute relative error by at least 7.27%, 9.38%, 9.90% and 3.17%, respectively.

Minimizing Age-of-Information for Fog Computing-supported Vehicular Networks with Deep Q-learning

Maohong Chen, Yong Xiao, Qiang Li et al.

Connected vehicular network is one of the key enablers for next generation cloud/fog-supported autonomous driving vehicles. Most connected vehicular applications require frequent status updates and Age of Information (AoI) is a more relevant metric to evaluate the performance of wireless links between vehicles and cloud/fog servers. This paper introduces a novel proactive and data-driven approach to optimize the driving route with a main objective of guaranteeing the confidence of AoI. In particular, we report a study on three month measurements of a multi-vehicle campus shuttle system connected to cloud/fog servers via a commercial LTE network. We establish empirical models for AoI in connected vehicles and investigate the impact of major factors on the performance of AoI. We also propose a Deep Q-Learning Netwrok (DQN)-based algorithm to decide the optimal driving route for each connected vehicle with maximized confidence level. Numerical results show that the proposed approach can lead to a significant improvement on the AoI confidence for various types of services supported.

Energy Efficiency Optimization for MIMO-OFDM Mobile Multimedia Communication Systems with QoS Constraints

Xiaohu Ge, Xi Huang, Yuming Wang et al.

It is widely recognized that besides the quality of service (QoS), the energy efficiency is also a key parameter in designing and evaluating mobile multimedia communication systems, which has catalyzed great interest in recent literature. In this paper, an energy efficiency model is first proposed for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) mobile multimedia communication systems with statistical QoS constraints. Employing the channel matrix singular-value-decomposition (SVD) method, all subchannels are classified by their channel characteristics. Furthermore, the multi-channel joint optimization problem in conventional MIMO-OFDM communication systems is transformed into a multi-target single channel optimization problem by grouping all subchannels. Therefore, a closed-form solution of the energy efficiency optimization is derived for MIMO-OFDM mobile mlutimedia communication systems. As a consequence, an energy-efficiency optimized power allocation (EEOPA) algorithm is proposed to improve the energy efficiency of MIMO-OFDM mobile multimedia communication systems. Simulation comparisons validate that the proposed EEOPA algorithm can guarantee the required QoS with high energy efficiency in MIMO-OFDM mobile multimedia communication systems.
