NDLPNet: A Location-Aware Nighttime Deraining Network and a Real-World Benchmark Dataset

Huichun Liu, Xiaosong Li, Yang Liu et al.

Visual degradation caused by rain streak artifacts in low-light conditions significantly hampers the performance of nighttime surveillance and autonomous navigation. Existing image deraining techniques are primarily designed for daytime conditions and perform poorly under nighttime illumination due to the spatial heterogeneity of rain distribution and the impact of light-dependent stripe visibility. In this paper, we propose a novel Nighttime Deraining Location-enhanced Perceptual Network(NDLPNet) that effectively captures the spatial positional information and density distribution of rain streaks in low-light environments. Specifically, we introduce a Position Perception Module (PPM) to capture and leverage spatial contextual information from input data, enhancing the model's capability to identify and recalibrate the importance of different feature channels. The proposed nighttime deraining network can effectively remove the rain streaks as well as preserve the crucial background information. Furthermore, We construct a night scene rainy (NSR) dataset comprising 900 image pairs, all based on real-world nighttime scenes, providing a new benchmark for nighttime deraining task research. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experimental evaluations on both existing datasets and the NSR dataset consistently demonstrate our method outperform the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods in nighttime deraining tasks. AdaFSNet: Time Series Classification Based on Convolutional Network with a Adaptive and Effective Kernel Size Configuration

Haoxiao Wang, Bo Peng, Jianhua Zhang et al.

Time series classification is one of the most critical and challenging problems in data mining, existing widely in various fields and holding significant research importance. Despite extensive research and notable achievements with successful real-world applications, addressing the challenge of capturing the appropriate receptive field (RF) size from one-dimensional or multi-dimensional time series of varying lengths remains a persistent issue, which greatly impacts performance and varies considerably across different datasets. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive and Effective Full-Scope Convolutional Neural Network (AdaFSNet) to enhance the accuracy of time series classification. This network includes two Dense Blocks. Particularly, it can dynamically choose a range of kernel sizes that effectively encompass the optimal RF size for various datasets by incorporating multiple prime numbers corresponding to the time series length. We also design a TargetDrop block, which can reduce redundancy while extracting a more effective RF. To assess the effectiveness of the AdaFSNet network, comprehensive experiments were conducted using the UCR and UEA datasets, which include one-dimensional and multi-dimensional time series data, respectively. Our model surpassed baseline models in terms of classification accuracy, underscoring the AdaFSNet network's efficiency and effectiveness in handling time series classification tasks.

Scalable Complexity Control Facilitates Reasoning Ability of LLMs

Liangkai Hang, Junjie Yao, Zhiwei Bai et al.

The reasoning ability of large language models (LLMs) has been rapidly advancing in recent years, attracting interest in more fundamental approaches that can reliably enhance their generalizability. This work demonstrates that model complexity control, conveniently implementable by adjusting the initialization rate and weight decay coefficient, improves the scaling law of LLMs consistently over varying model sizes and data sizes. This gain is further illustrated by comparing the benchmark performance of 2.4B models pretrained on 1T tokens with different complexity hyperparameters. Instead of fixing the initialization std, we found that a constant initialization rate (the exponent of std) enables the scaling law to descend faster in both model and data sizes. These results indicate that complexity control is a promising direction for the continual advancement of LLMs.

Technique Report of CVPR 2024 PBDL Challenges

Ying Fu, Yu Li, Shaodi You et al.

The intersection of physics-based vision and deep learning presents an exciting frontier for advancing computer vision technologies. By leveraging the principles of physics to inform and enhance deep learning models, we can develop more robust and accurate vision systems. Physics-based vision aims to invert the processes to recover scene properties such as shape, reflectance, light distribution, and medium properties from images. In recent years, deep learning has shown promising improvements for various vision tasks, and when combined with physics-based vision, these approaches can enhance the robustness and accuracy of vision systems. This technical report summarizes the outcomes of the Physics-Based Vision Meets Deep Learning (PBDL) 2024 challenge, held in CVPR 2024 workshop. The challenge consisted of eight tracks, focusing on Low-Light Enhancement and Detection as well as High Dynamic Range (HDR) Imaging. This report details the objectives, methodologies, and results of each track, highlighting the top-performing solutions and their innovative approaches.

S3Library: Automatically Eliminating C/C++ Buffer Overflow using Compatible Safer Libraries

Kang Sun, Daliang Xu, Dongwei Chen et al.

Annex K of C11, bounds-checking interfaces, recently introduced a set of alternative functions to mitigate buffer overflows, primarily those caused by string/memory functions. However, poor compatibility limits their adoption. Failure oblivious computing can eliminate the possibility that an attacker can exploit memory errors to corrupt the address space and significantly increase the availability of systems. In this paper, we present S3Library (Saturation-Memory-Access Safer String Library), which is compatible with the standard C library in terms of function signature. Our technique automatically replaces unsafe deprecated memory/string functions with safer versions that perform bounds checking and eliminate buffer overflows via boundless memory. S3Library employs MinFat, a very compact pointer representation following the Less is More principle, to encode metadata into unused upper bits within pointers. In addition, S3Library utilizes Saturation Memory Access to eliminate illegal memory accesses into boundless padding area. Even if an out-of-bounds access is made, the fault program will not be interrupted. We implement our scheme within the LLVM framework on X86-64 and evaluate our approach on correctness, security, runtime performance and availability.

DangKiller: Eliminating Dangling Pointers Efficiently via Implicit Identifier

Daliang Xu, Dongwei Chen, Chun Yang et al.

Use-After-Free vulnerabilities, allowing the attacker to access unintended memory via dangling pointers, are more threatening. However, most detection schemes can only detect dangling pointers and invalid them, but not provide a tolerance mechanism to repair the errors at runtime. Also, these techniques obtain and manage the metadata inefficiently with complex structures and too much scan (sweep). The goal of this paper is to use compiler instrumentation to eliminate dangling pointers automatically and efficiently. In this paper, we observe that most techniques lack accurate efficient pointer graph metadata maintaining methods, so they need to scan the log to reduce the redundancy and sweep the whole address space to find dangling pointers. Also, they lack a direct, efficiently obtaining metadata approach. The key insight of this paper is that a unique identifier can be used as a key to a hash or direct-map algorithm. Thus, this paper maintains the same implicit identifier with each memory object and its corresponding referent. Associating the unique ID with metadata for memory objects, obtaining and managing the pointer graph metadata can be efficiently. Therefore, with the delayed free technique adopted into C/C++, we present the DangKiller as a novel and lightweight dangling pointer elimination solution. We first demonstrate the MinFat Pointer, which can calculate unique implicit ID for each object and pointer quickly, and use hash algorithm to obtain metadata. Secondly, we propose the Log Cache and Log Compression mechanism based on the ID to decrease the redundancy of dangling pointer candidates. Coupled with the Address Tagging architecture on an ARM64 system, our experiments show that the DangKiller can eliminate use-after-free vulnerabilities at only 11% and 3% runtime overheads for the SPEC CPU2006 and 2017 benchmarks respectively, except for unique cases.
