A study on joint modeling and data augmentation of multi-modalities for audio-visual scene classificationQing Wang, Jun Du, Siyuan Zheng et al. · gatech, nvidia
In this paper, we propose two techniques, namely joint modeling and data augmentation, to improve system performances for audio-visual scene classification (AVSC). We employ pre-trained networks trained only on image data sets to extract video embedding; whereas for audio embedding models, we decide to train them from scratch. We explore different neural network architectures for joint modeling to effectively combine the video and audio modalities. Moreover, data augmentation strategies are investigated to increase audio-visual training set size. For the video modality the effectiveness of several operations in RandAugment is verified. An audio-video joint mixup scheme is proposed to further improve AVSC performances. Evaluated on the development set of TAU Urban Audio Visual Scenes 2021, our final system can achieve the best accuracy of 94.2% among all single AVSC systems submitted to DCASE 2021 Task 1b.

TSUP Speaker Diarization System for Conversational Short-phrase Speaker Diarization ChallengeBowen Pang, Huan Zhao, Gaosheng Zhang et al.
This paper describes the TSUP team's submission to the ISCSLP 2022 conversational short-phrase speaker diarization (CSSD) challenge which particularly focuses on short-phrase conversations with a new evaluation metric called conversational diarization error rate (CDER). In this challenge, we explore three kinds of typical speaker diarization systems, which are spectral clustering(SC) based diarization, target-speaker voice activity detection(TS-VAD) and end-to-end neural diarization(EEND) respectively. Our major findings are summarized as follows. First, the SC approach is more favored over the other two approaches under the new CDER metric. Second, tuning on hyperparameters is essential to CDER for all three types of speaker diarization systems. Specifically, CDER becomes smaller when the length of sub-segments setting longer. Finally, multi-system fusion through DOVER-LAP will worsen the CDER metric on the challenge data. Our submitted SC system eventually ranks the third place in the challenge.

Hierarchical Audio-Visual Information Fusion with Multi-label Joint Decoding for MER 2023Haotian Wang, Yuxuan Xi, Hang Chen et al.
In this paper, we propose a novel framework for recognizing both discrete and dimensional emotions. In our framework, deep features extracted from foundation models are used as robust acoustic and visual representations of raw video. Three different structures based on attention-guided feature gathering (AFG) are designed for deep feature fusion. Then, we introduce a joint decoding structure for emotion classification and valence regression in the decoding stage. A multi-task loss based on uncertainty is also designed to optimize the whole process. Finally, by combining three different structures on the posterior probability level, we obtain the final predictions of discrete and dimensional emotions. When tested on the dataset of multimodal emotion recognition challenge (MER 2023), the proposed framework yields consistent improvements in both emotion classification and valence regression. Our final system achieves state-of-the-art performance and ranks third on the leaderboard on MER-MULTI sub-challenge.

An Experimental Study on Joint Modeling for Sound Event Localization and Detection with Source Distance EstimationYuxuan Dong, Qing Wang, Hengyi Hong et al.
In traditional sound event localization and detection (SELD) tasks, the focus is typically on sound event detection (SED) and direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, but they fall short of providing full spatial information about the sound source. The 3D SELD task addresses this limitation by integrating source distance estimation (SDE), allowing for complete spatial localization. We propose three approaches to tackle this challenge: a novel method with independent training and joint prediction, which firstly treats DOA and distance estimation as separate tasks and then combines them to solve 3D SELD; a dual-branch representation with source Cartesian coordinate used for simultaneous DOA and distance estimation; and a three-branch structure that jointly models SED, DOA, and SDE within a unified framework. Our proposed method ranked first in the DCASE 2024 Challenge Task 3, demonstrating the effectiveness of joint modeling for addressing the 3D SELD task. The relevant code for this paper will be open-sourced in the future.

Information Fusion in Attention Networks Using Adaptive and Multi-level Factorized Bilinear Pooling for Audio-visual Emotion RecognitionHengshun Zhou, Jun Du, Yuanyuan Zhang et al.
Multimodal emotion recognition is a challenging task in emotion computing as it is quite difficult to extract discriminative features to identify the subtle differences in human emotions with abstract concept and multiple expressions. Moreover, how to fully utilize both audio and visual information is still an open problem. In this paper, we propose a novel multimodal fusion attention network for audio-visual emotion recognition based on adaptive and multi-level factorized bilinear pooling (FBP). First, for the audio stream, a fully convolutional network (FCN) equipped with 1-D attention mechanism and local response normalization is designed for speech emotion recognition. Next, a global FBP (G-FBP) approach is presented to perform audio-visual information fusion by integrating selfattention based video stream with the proposed audio stream. To improve G-FBP, an adaptive strategy (AG-FBP) to dynamically calculate the fusion weight of two modalities is devised based on the emotion-related representation vectors from the attention mechanism of respective modalities. Finally, to fully utilize the local emotion information, adaptive and multi-level FBP (AMFBP) is introduced by combining both global-trunk and intratrunk data in one recording on top of AG-FBP. Tested on the IEMOCAP corpus for speech emotion recognition with only audio stream, the new FCN method outperforms the state-ofthe-art results with an accuracy of 71.40%. Moreover, validated on the AFEW database of EmotiW2019 sub-challenge and the IEMOCAP corpus for audio-visual emotion recognition, the proposed AM-FBP approach achieves the best accuracy of 63.09% and 75.49% respectively on the test set.

A Lottery Ticket Hypothesis Framework for Low-Complexity Device-Robust Neural Acoustic Scene ClassificationHao Yen, Chao-Han Huck Yang, Hu Hu et al.
We propose a novel neural model compression strategy combining data augmentation, knowledge transfer, pruning, and quantization for device-robust acoustic scene classification (ASC). Specifically, we tackle the ASC task in a low-resource environment leveraging a recently proposed advanced neural network pruning mechanism, namely Lottery Ticket Hypothesis (LTH), to find a sub-network neural model associated with a small amount non-zero model parameters. The effectiveness of LTH for low-complexity acoustic modeling is assessed by investigating various data augmentation and compression schemes, and we report an efficient joint framework for low-complexity multi-device ASC, called \emph{Acoustic Lottery}. Acoustic Lottery could compress an ASC model up to $1/10^{4}$ and attain a superior performance (validation accuracy of 79.4% and Log loss of 0.64) compared to its not compressed seed model. All results reported in this work are based on a joint effort of four groups, namely GT-USTC-UKE-Tencent, aiming to address the "Low-Complexity Acoustic Scene Classification (ASC) with Multiple Devices" in the DCASE 2021 Challenge Task 1a.

A Four-Stage Data Augmentation Approach to ResNet-Conformer Based Acoustic Modeling for Sound Event Localization and DetectionQing Wang, Jun Du, Hua-Xin Wu et al.
In this paper, we propose a novel four-stage data augmentation approach to ResNet-Conformer based acoustic modeling for sound event localization and detection (SELD). First, we explore two spatial augmentation techniques, namely audio channel swapping (ACS) and multi-channel simulation (MCS), to deal with data sparsity in SELD. ACS and MDS focus on augmenting the limited training data with expanding direction of arrival (DOA) representations such that the acoustic models trained with the augmented data are robust to localization variations of acoustic sources. Next, time-domain mixing (TDM) and time-frequency masking (TFM) are also investigated to deal with overlapping sound events and data diversity. Finally, ACS, MCS, TDM and TFM are combined in a step-by-step manner to form an effective four-stage data augmentation scheme. Tested on the Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE) 2020 data set, our proposed augmentation approach greatly improves the system performance, ranking our submitted system in the first place in the SELD task of the DCASE 2020 Challenge. Furthermore, we employ a ResNet-Conformer architecture to model both global and local context dependencies of an audio sequence and win the first place in the DCASE 2022 SELD evaluations.

Frequency Gating: Improved Convolutional Neural Networks for Speech Enhancement in the Time-Frequency DomainKoen Oostermeijer, Qing Wang, Jun Du
One of the strengths of traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is their inherent translational invariance. However, for the task of speech enhancement in the time-frequency domain, this property cannot be fully exploited due to a lack of invariance in the frequency direction. In this paper we propose to remedy this inefficiency by introducing a method, which we call Frequency Gating, to compute multiplicative weights for the kernels of the CNN in order to make them frequency dependent. Several mechanisms are explored: temporal gating, in which weights are dependent on prior time frames, local gating, whose weights are generated based on a single time frame and the ones adjacent to it, and frequency-wise gating, where each kernel is assigned a weight independent of the input data. Experiments with an autoencoder neural network with skip connections show that both local and frequency-wise gating outperform the baseline and are therefore viable ways to improve CNN-based speech enhancement neural networks. In addition, a loss function based on the extended short-time objective intelligibility score (ESTOI) is introduced, which we show to outperform the standard mean squared error (MSE) loss function.
