IKEA-Manual: Seeing Shape Assembly Step by Step

Human-designed visual manuals are crucial components in shape assembly activities. They provide step-by-step guidance on how we should move and connect different parts in a convenient and physically-realizable way. While there has been an ongoing effort in building agents that perform assembly tasks, the information in human-design manuals has been largely overlooked. We identify that this is due to 1) a lack of realistic 3D assembly objects that have paired manuals and 2) the difficulty of extracting structured information from purely image-based manuals. Motivated by this observation, we present IKEA-Manual, a dataset consisting of 102 IKEA objects paired with assembly manuals. We provide fine-grained annotations on the IKEA objects and assembly manuals, including decomposed assembly parts, assembly plans, manual segmentation, and 2D-3D correspondence between 3D parts and visual manuals. We illustrate the broad application of our dataset on four tasks related to shape assembly: assembly plan generation, part segmentation, pose estimation, and 3D part assembly.

ChatGPT: A Meta-Analysis after 2.5 Months

ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by OpenAI, has gained widespread popularity and media attention since its release in November 2022. However, little hard evidence is available regarding its perception in various sources. In this paper, we analyze over 300,000 tweets and more than 150 scientific papers to investigate how ChatGPT is perceived and discussed. Our findings show that ChatGPT is generally viewed as of high quality, with positive sentiment and emotions of joy dominating in social media. Its perception has slightly decreased since its debut, however, with joy decreasing and (negative) surprise on the rise, and it is perceived more negatively in languages other than English. In recent scientific papers, ChatGPT is characterized as a great opportunity across various fields including the medical domain, but also as a threat concerning ethics and receives mixed assessments for education. Our comprehensive meta-analysis of ChatGPT's current perception after 2.5 months since its release can contribute to shaping the public debate and informing its future development. We make our data available.

A Generalizable Artificial Intelligence Model for COVID-19 Classification Task Using Chest X-ray Radiographs: Evaluated Over Four Clinical Datasets with 15,097 Patients

Purpose: To answer the long-standing question of whether a model trained from a single clinical site can be generalized to external sites. Materials and Methods: 17,537 chest x-ray radiographs (CXRs) from 3,264 COVID-19-positive patients and 4,802 COVID-19-negative patients were collected from a single site for AI model development. The generalizability of the trained model was retrospectively evaluated using four different real-world clinical datasets with a total of 26,633 CXRs from 15,097 patients (3,277 COVID-19-positive patients). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to assess diagnostic performance. Results: The AI model trained using a single-source clinical dataset achieved an AUC of 0.82 (95% CI: 0.80, 0.84) when applied to the internal temporal test set. When applied to datasets from two external clinical sites, an AUC of 0.81 (95% CI: 0.80, 0.82) and 0.82 (95% CI: 0.80, 0.84) were achieved. An AUC of 0.79 (95% CI: 0.77, 0.81) was achieved when applied to a multi-institutional COVID-19 dataset collected by the Medical Imaging and Data Resource Center (MIDRC). A power-law dependence, N^(k )(k is empirically found to be -0.21 to -0.25), indicates a relatively weak performance dependence on the training data sizes. Conclusion: COVID-19 classification AI model trained using well-curated data from a single clinical site is generalizable to external clinical sites without a significant drop in performance.

NLLG Quarterly arXiv Report 06/23: What are the most influential current AI Papers?

The rapid growth of information in the field of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly in the subfields of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML), presents a significant challenge for researchers and practitioners to keep pace with the latest developments. To address the problem of information overload, this report by the Natural Language Learning Group at Bielefeld University focuses on identifying the most popular papers on arXiv, with a specific emphasis on NLP and ML. The objective is to offer a quick guide to the most relevant and widely discussed research, aiding both newcomers and established researchers in staying abreast of current trends. In particular, we compile a list of the 40 most popular papers based on normalized citation counts from the first half of 2023. We observe the dominance of papers related to Large Language Models (LLMs) and specifically ChatGPT during the first half of 2023, with the latter showing signs of declining popularity more recently, however. Further, NLP related papers are the most influential (around 60\% of top papers) even though there are twice as many ML related papers in our data. Core issues investigated in the most heavily cited papers are: LLM efficiency, evaluation techniques, ethical considerations, embodied agents, and problem-solving with LLMs. Additionally, we examine the characteristics of top papers in comparison to others outside the top-40 list (noticing the top paper's focus on LLM related issues and higher number of co-authors) and analyze the citation distributions in our dataset, among others.

Deep-Learning Tool for Early Identifying Non-Traumatic Intracranial Hemorrhage Etiology based on CT Scan

Background: To develop an artificial intelligence system that can accurately identify acute non-traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) etiology based on non-contrast CT (NCCT) scans and investigate whether clinicians can benefit from it in a diagnostic setting. Materials and Methods: The deep learning model was developed with 1868 eligible NCCT scans with non-traumatic ICH collected between January 2011 and April 2018. We tested the model on two independent datasets (TT200 and SD 98) collected after April 2018. The model's diagnostic performance was compared with clinicians's performance. We further designed a simulated study to compare the clinicians's performance with and without the deep learning system augmentation. Results: The proposed deep learning system achieved area under the receiver operating curve of 0.986 (95% CI 0.967-1.000) on aneurysms, 0.952 (0.917-0.987) on hypertensive hemorrhage, 0.950 (0.860-1.000) on arteriovenous malformation (AVM), 0.749 (0.586-0.912) on Moyamoya disease (MMD), 0.837 (0.704-0.969) on cavernous malformation (CM), and 0.839 (0.722-0.959) on other causes in TT200 dataset. Given a 90% specificity level, the sensitivities of our model were 97.1% and 90.9% for aneurysm and AVM diagnosis, respectively. The model also shows an impressive generalizability in an independent dataset SD98. The clinicians achieve significant improvements in the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of diagnoses of certain hemorrhage etiologies with proposed system augmentation. Conclusions: The proposed deep learning algorithms can be an effective tool for early identification of hemorrhage etiologies based on NCCT scans. It may also provide more information for clinicians for triage and further imaging examination selection.

RobustPointSet: A Dataset for Benchmarking Robustness of Point Cloud Classifiers

The 3D deep learning community has seen significant strides in pointcloud processing over the last few years. However, the datasets on which deep models have been trained have largely remained the same. Most datasets comprise clean, clutter-free pointclouds canonicalized for pose. Models trained on these datasets fail in uninterpretible and unintuitive ways when presented with data that contains transformations "unseen" at train time. While data augmentation enables models to be robust to "previously seen" input transformations, 1) we show that this does not work for unseen transformations during inference, and 2) data augmentation makes it difficult to analyze a model's inherent robustness to transformations. To this end, we create a publicly available dataset for robustness analysis of point cloud classification models (independent of data augmentation) to input transformations, called RobustPointSet. Our experiments indicate that despite all the progress in the point cloud classification, there is no single architecture that consistently performs better -- several fail drastically -- when evaluated on transformed test sets. We also find that robustness to unseen transformations cannot be brought about merely by extensive data augmentation. NLLG Quarterly arXiv Report 09/24: What are the most influential current AI Papers?

The NLLG (Natural Language Learning & Generation) arXiv reports assist in navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of NLP and AI research across cs.CL, cs.CV, cs.AI, and cs.LG categories. This fourth installment captures a transformative period in AI history - from January 1, 2023, following ChatGPT's debut, through September 30, 2024. Our analysis reveals substantial new developments in the field - with 45% of the top 40 most-cited papers being new entries since our last report eight months ago and offers insights into emerging trends and major breakthroughs, such as novel multimodal architectures, including diffusion and state space models. Natural Language Processing (NLP; cs.CL) remains the dominant main category in the list of our top-40 papers but its dominance is on the decline in favor of Computer vision (cs.CV) and general machine learning (cs.LG). This report also presents novel findings on the integration of generative AI in academic writing, documenting its increasing adoption since 2022 while revealing an intriguing pattern: top-cited papers show notably fewer markers of AI-generated content compared to random samples. Furthermore, we track the evolution of AI-associated language, identifying declining trends in previously common indicators such as "delve".

NLLG Quarterly arXiv Report 09/23: What are the most influential current AI Papers?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has witnessed rapid growth, especially in the subfields Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML) and Computer Vision (CV). Keeping pace with this rapid progress poses a considerable challenge for researchers and professionals in the field. In this arXiv report, the second of its kind, which covers the period from January to September 2023, we aim to provide insights and analysis that help navigate these dynamic areas of AI. We accomplish this by 1) identifying the top-40 most cited papers from arXiv in the given period, comparing the current top-40 papers to the previous report, which covered the period January to June; 2) analyzing dataset characteristics and keyword popularity; 3) examining the global sectoral distribution of institutions to reveal differences in engagement across geographical areas. Our findings highlight the continued dominance of NLP: while only 16% of all submitted papers have NLP as primary category (more than 25% have CV and ML as primary category), 50% of the most cited papers have NLP as primary category, 90% of which target LLMs. Additionally, we show that i) the US dominates among both top-40 and top-9k papers, followed by China; ii) Europe clearly lags behind and is hardly represented in the top-40 most cited papers; iii) US industry is largely overrepresented in the top-40 most influential papers.

MELONS: generating melody with long-term structure using transformers and structure graph

The creation of long melody sequences requires effective expression of coherent musical structure. However, there is no clear representation of musical structure. Recent works on music generation have suggested various approaches to deal with the structural information of music, but generating a full-song melody with clear long-term structure remains a challenge. In this paper, we propose MELONS, a melody generation framework based on a graph representation of music structure which consists of eight types of bar-level relations. MELONS adopts a multi-step generation method with transformer-based networks by factoring melody generation into two sub-problems: structure generation and structure conditional melody generation. Experimental results show that MELONS can produce structured melodies with high quality and rich contents.

A Simulated Experiment to Explore Robotic Dialogue Strategies for People with Dementia

People with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) often show the problem of repetitive questioning, which brings a great burden on persons with ADRD (PwDs) and their caregivers. Conversational robots hold promise of coping with this problem and hence alleviating the burdens on caregivers. In this paper, we proposed a partially observable markov decision process (POMDP) model for the PwD-robot interaction in the context of repetitive questioning, and used Q-learning to learn an adaptive conversation strategy (i.e., rate of follow-up question and difficulty of follow-up question) towards PwDs with different cognitive capabilities and different engagement levels. The results indicated that Q-learning was helpful for action selection for the robot. This may be a useful step towards the application of conversational social robots to cope with repetitive questioning in PwDs.
