VITATECS: A Diagnostic Dataset for Temporal Concept Understanding of Video-Language Models

Shicheng Li, Lei Li, Shuhuai Ren et al. · pku

The ability to perceive how objects change over time is a crucial ingredient in human intelligence. However, current benchmarks cannot faithfully reflect the temporal understanding abilities of video-language models (VidLMs) due to the existence of static visual shortcuts. To remedy this issue, we present VITATECS, a diagnostic VIdeo-Text dAtaset for the evaluation of TEmporal Concept underStanding. Specifically, we first introduce a fine-grained taxonomy of temporal concepts in natural language in order to diagnose the capability of VidLMs to comprehend different temporal aspects. Furthermore, to disentangle the correlation between static and temporal information, we generate counterfactual video descriptions that differ from the original one only in the specified temporal aspect. We employ a semi-automatic data collection framework using large language models and human-in-the-loop annotation to obtain high-quality counterfactual descriptions efficiently. Evaluation of representative video-language understanding models confirms their deficiency in temporal understanding, revealing the need for greater emphasis on the temporal elements in video-language research.

Mask-FPAN: Semi-Supervised Face Parsing in the Wild With De-Occlusion and UV GAN

Lei Li, Tianfang Zhang, Zhongfeng Kang et al.

Fine-grained semantic segmentation of a person's face and head, including facial parts and head components, has progressed a great deal in recent years. However, it remains a challenging task, whereby considering ambiguous occlusions and large pose variations are particularly difficult. To overcome these difficulties, we propose a novel framework termed Mask-FPAN. It uses a de-occlusion module that learns to parse occluded faces in a semi-supervised way. In particular, face landmark localization, face occlusionstimations, and detected head poses are taken into account. A 3D morphable face model combined with the UV GAN improves the robustness of 2D face parsing. In addition, we introduce two new datasets named FaceOccMask-HQ and CelebAMaskOcc-HQ for face paring work. The proposed Mask-FPAN framework addresses the face parsing problem in the wild and shows significant performance improvements with MIOU from 0.7353 to 0.9013 compared to the state-of-the-art on challenging face datasets.

3D Textured Shape Recovery with Learned Geometric Priors

Lei Li, Zhizheng Liu, Weining Ren et al.

3D textured shape recovery from partial scans is crucial for many real-world applications. Existing approaches have demonstrated the efficacy of implicit function representation, but they suffer from partial inputs with severe occlusions and varying object types, which greatly hinders their application value in the real world. This technical report presents our approach to address these limitations by incorporating learned geometric priors. To this end, we generate a SMPL model from learned pose prediction and fuse it into the partial input to add prior knowledge of human bodies. We also propose a novel completeness-aware bounding box adaptation for handling different levels of scales and partialness of partial scans.

GenZI: Zero-Shot 3D Human-Scene Interaction Generation

Lei Li, Angela Dai

Can we synthesize 3D humans interacting with scenes without learning from any 3D human-scene interaction data? We propose GenZI, the first zero-shot approach to generating 3D human-scene interactions. Key to GenZI is our distillation of interaction priors from large vision-language models (VLMs), which have learned a rich semantic space of 2D human-scene compositions. Given a natural language description and a coarse point location of the desired interaction in a 3D scene, we first leverage VLMs to imagine plausible 2D human interactions inpainted into multiple rendered views of the scene. We then formulate a robust iterative optimization to synthesize the pose and shape of a 3D human model in the scene, guided by consistency with the 2D interaction hypotheses. In contrast to existing learning-based approaches, GenZI circumvents the conventional need for captured 3D interaction data, and allows for flexible control of the 3D interaction synthesis with easy-to-use text prompts. Extensive experiments show that our zero-shot approach has high flexibility and generality, making it applicable to diverse scene types, including both indoor and outdoor environments.

Task-Aware Monocular Depth Estimation for 3D Object Detection

Xinlong Wang, Wei Yin, Tao Kong et al.

Monocular depth estimation enables 3D perception from a single 2D image, thus attracting much research attention for years. Almost all methods treat foreground and background regions ("things and stuff") in an image equally. However, not all pixels are equal. Depth of foreground objects plays a crucial role in 3D object recognition and localization. To date how to boost the depth prediction accuracy of foreground objects is rarely discussed. In this paper, we first analyse the data distributions and interaction of foreground and background, then propose the foreground-background separated monocular depth estimation (ForeSeE) method, to estimate the foreground depth and background depth using separate optimization objectives and depth decoders. Our method significantly improves the depth estimation performance on foreground objects. Applying ForeSeE to 3D object detection, we achieve 7.5 AP gains and set new state-of-the-art results among other monocular methods. Code will be available at: https://github.com/WXinlong/ForeSeE.

Edge Aware Learning for 3D Point Cloud

Lei Li

This paper proposes an innovative approach to Hierarchical Edge Aware 3D Point Cloud Learning (HEA-Net) that seeks to address the challenges of noise in point cloud data, and improve object recognition and segmentation by focusing on edge features. In this study, we present an innovative edge-aware learning methodology, specifically designed to enhance point cloud classification and segmentation. Drawing inspiration from the human visual system, the concept of edge-awareness has been incorporated into this methodology, contributing to improved object recognition while simultaneously reducing computational time. Our research has led to the development of an advanced 3D point cloud learning framework that effectively manages object classification and segmentation tasks. A unique fusion of local and global network learning paradigms has been employed, enriched by edge-focused local and global embeddings, thereby significantly augmenting the model's interpretative prowess. Further, we have applied a hierarchical transformer architecture to boost point cloud processing efficiency, thus providing nuanced insights into structural understanding. Our approach demonstrates significant promise in managing noisy point cloud data and highlights the potential of edge-aware strategies in 3D point cloud learning. The proposed approach is shown to outperform existing techniques in object classification and segmentation tasks, as demonstrated by experiments on ModelNet40 and ShapeNet datasets.

Contrast-Free Myocardial Scar Segmentation in Cine MRI using Motion and Texture Fusion

Guang Yang, Jingkun Chen, Xicheng Sheng et al.

Late gadolinium enhancement MRI (LGE MRI) is the gold standard for the detection of myocardial scars for post myocardial infarction (MI). LGE MRI requires the injection of a contrast agent, which carries potential side effects and increases scanning time and patient discomfort. To address these issues, we propose a novel framework that combines cardiac motion observed in cine MRI with image texture information to segment the myocardium and scar tissue in the left ventricle. Cardiac motion tracking can be formulated as a full cardiac image cycle registration problem, which can be solved via deep neural networks. Experimental results prove that the proposed method can achieve scar segmentation based on non-contrasted cine images with comparable accuracy to LGE MRI. This demonstrates its potential as an alternative to contrast-enhanced techniques for scar detection.

SSFlowNet: Semi-supervised Scene Flow Estimation On Point Clouds With Pseudo Label

Jingze Chen, Junfeng Yao, Qiqin Lin et al.

In the domain of supervised scene flow estimation, the process of manual labeling is both time-intensive and financially demanding. This paper introduces SSFlowNet, a semi-supervised approach for scene flow estimation, that utilizes a blend of labeled and unlabeled data, optimizing the balance between the cost of labeling and the precision of model training. SSFlowNet stands out through its innovative use of pseudo-labels, mainly reducing the dependency on extensively labeled datasets while maintaining high model accuracy. The core of our model is its emphasis on the intricate geometric structures of point clouds, both locally and globally, coupled with a novel spatial memory feature. This feature is adept at learning the geometric relationships between points over sequential time frames. By identifying similarities between labeled and unlabeled points, SSFlowNet dynamically constructs a correlation matrix to evaluate scene flow dependencies at individual point level. Furthermore, the integration of a flow consistency module within SSFlowNet enhances its capability to consistently estimate flow, an essential aspect for analyzing dynamic scenes. Empirical results demonstrate that SSFlowNet surpasses existing methods in pseudo-label generation and shows adaptability across varying data volumes. Moreover, our semi-supervised training technique yields promising outcomes even with different smaller ratio labeled data, marking a substantial advancement in the field of scene flow estimation.

Cross-Modality Multi-Atlas Segmentation via Deep Registration and Label Fusion

Wangbin Ding, Lei Li, Xiahai Zhuang et al.

Multi-atlas segmentation (MAS) is a promising framework for medical image segmentation. Generally, MAS methods register multiple atlases, i.e., medical images with corresponding labels, to a target image; and the transformed atlas labels can be combined to generate target segmentation via label fusion schemes. Many conventional MAS methods employed the atlases from the same modality as the target image. However, the number of atlases with the same modality may be limited or even missing in many clinical applications. Besides, conventional MAS methods suffer from the computational burden of registration or label fusion procedures. In this work, we design a novel cross-modality MAS framework, which uses available atlases from a certain modality to segment a target image from another modality. To boost the computational efficiency of the framework, both the image registration and label fusion are achieved by well-designed deep neural networks. For the atlas-to-target image registration, we propose a bi-directional registration network (BiRegNet), which can efficiently align images from different modalities. For the label fusion, we design a similarity estimation network (SimNet), which estimates the fusion weight of each atlas by measuring its similarity to the target image. SimNet can learn multi-scale information for similarity estimation to improve the performance of label fusion. The proposed framework was evaluated by the left ventricle and liver segmentation tasks on the MM-WHS and CHAOS datasets, respectively. Results have shown that the framework is effective for cross-modality MAS in both registration and label fusion.

ICM-3D: Instantiated Category Modeling for 3D Instance Segmentation

Ruihang Chu, Yukang Chen, Tao Kong et al.

Separating 3D point clouds into individual instances is an important task for 3D vision. It is challenging due to the unknown and varying number of instances in a scene. Existing deep learning based works focus on a two-step pipeline: first learn a feature embedding and then cluster the points. Such a two-step pipeline leads to disconnected intermediate objectives. In this paper, we propose an integrated reformulation of 3D instance segmentation as a per-point classification problem. We propose ICM-3D, a single-step method to segment 3D instances via instantiated categorization. The augmented category information is automatically constructed from 3D spatial positions. We conduct extensive experiments to verify the effectiveness of ICM-3D and show that it obtains inspiring performance across multiple frameworks, backbones and benchmarks.

Few-Shot Meta-Learning on Point Cloud for Semantic Segmentation

Xudong Li, Li Feng, Lei Li et al.

The promotion of construction robots can solve the problem of human resource shortage and improve the quality of decoration. To help the construction robots obtain environmental information, we need to use 3D point cloud, which is widely used in robotics, autonomous driving, and so on. With a good understanding of environmental information, construction robots can work better. However, the dynamic changes of 3D point cloud data may bring difficulties for construction robots to understand environmental information, such as when construction robots renovate houses. The paper proposes a semantic segmentation method for point cloud based on meta-learning. The method includes a basic learning module and a meta-learning module. The basic learning module is responsible for learning data features and evaluating the model, while the meta-learning module is responsible for updating the parameters of the model and improving the model generalization ability. In our work, we pioneered the method of producing datasets for meta-learning in 3D scenes, as well as demonstrated that the Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning (MAML) algorithm can be applied to process 3D point cloud data. At the same time, experiments show that our method can allow the model to be quickly applied to new environments with a few samples. Our method has important applications.

PointDSC: Robust Point Cloud Registration using Deep Spatial Consistency

Xuyang Bai, Zixin Luo, Lei Zhou et al.

Removing outlier correspondences is one of the critical steps for successful feature-based point cloud registration. Despite the increasing popularity of introducing deep learning methods in this field, spatial consistency, which is essentially established by a Euclidean transformation between point clouds, has received almost no individual attention in existing learning frameworks. In this paper, we present PointDSC, a novel deep neural network that explicitly incorporates spatial consistency for pruning outlier correspondences. First, we propose a nonlocal feature aggregation module, weighted by both feature and spatial coherence, for feature embedding of the input correspondences. Second, we formulate a differentiable spectral matching module, supervised by pairwise spatial compatibility, to estimate the inlier confidence of each correspondence from the embedded features. With modest computation cost, our method outperforms the state-of-the-art hand-crafted and learning-based outlier rejection approaches on several real-world datasets by a significant margin. We also show its wide applicability by combining PointDSC with different 3D local descriptors.

Cross-Modality Multi-Atlas Segmentation Using Deep Neural Networks

Wangbin Ding, Lei Li, Xiahai Zhuang et al.

Both image registration and label fusion in the multi-atlas segmentation (MAS) rely on the intensity similarity between target and atlas images. However, such similarity can be problematic when target and atlas images are acquired using different imaging protocols. High-level structure information can provide reliable similarity measurement for cross-modality images when cooperating with deep neural networks (DNNs). This work presents a new MAS framework for cross-modality images, where both image registration and label fusion are achieved by DNNs. For image registration, we propose a consistent registration network, which can jointly estimate forward and backward dense displacement fields (DDFs). Additionally, an invertible constraint is employed in the network to reduce the correspondence ambiguity of the estimated DDFs. For label fusion, we adapt a few-shot learning network to measure the similarity of atlas and target patches. Moreover, the network can be seamlessly integrated into the patch-based label fusion. The proposed framework is evaluated on the MM-WHS dataset of MICCAI 2017. Results show that the framework is effective in both cross-modality registration and segmentation.

End-to-End Learning Local Multi-view Descriptors for 3D Point Clouds

Lei Li, Siyu Zhu, Hongbo Fu et al.

In this work, we propose an end-to-end framework to learn local multi-view descriptors for 3D point clouds. To adopt a similar multi-view representation, existing studies use hand-crafted viewpoints for rendering in a preprocessing stage, which is detached from the subsequent descriptor learning stage. In our framework, we integrate the multi-view rendering into neural networks by using a differentiable renderer, which allows the viewpoints to be optimizable parameters for capturing more informative local context of interest points. To obtain discriminative descriptors, we also design a soft-view pooling module to attentively fuse convolutional features across views. Extensive experiments on existing 3D registration benchmarks show that our method outperforms existing local descriptors both quantitatively and qualitatively.

SketchDesc: Learning Local Sketch Descriptors for Multi-view Correspondence

Deng Yu, Lei Li, Youyi Zheng et al.

In this paper, we study the problem of multi-view sketch correspondence, where we take as input multiple freehand sketches with different views of the same object and predict as output the semantic correspondence among the sketches. This problem is challenging since the visual features of corresponding points at different views can be very different. To this end, we take a deep learning approach and learn a novel local sketch descriptor from data. We contribute a training dataset by generating the pixel-level correspondence for the multi-view line drawings synthesized from 3D shapes. To handle the sparsity and ambiguity of sketches, we design a novel multi-branch neural network that integrates a patch-based representation and a multi-scale strategy to learn the pixel-level correspondence among multi-view sketches. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach with extensive experiments on hand-drawn sketches and multi-view line drawings rendered from multiple 3D shape datasets.

Multiview Cauchy Estimator Feature Embedding for Depth and Inertial Sensor-Based Human Action Recognition

Yanan Guo, Lei Li, Weifeng Liu et al.

The ever-growing popularity of Kinect and inertial sensors has prompted intensive research efforts on human action recognition. Since human actions can be characterized by multiple feature representations extracted from Kinect and inertial sensors, multiview features must be encoded into a unified space optimal for human action recognition. In this paper, we propose a new unsupervised feature fusion method termed Multiview Cauchy Estimator Feature Embedding (MCEFE) for human action recognition. By minimizing empirical risk, MCEFE integrates the encoded complementary information in multiple views to find the unified data representation and the projection matrices. To enhance robustness to outliers, the Cauchy estimator is imposed on the reconstruction error. Furthermore, ensemble manifold regularization is enforced on the projection matrices to encode the correlations between different views and avoid overfitting. Experiments are conducted on the new Chinese Academy of Sciences - Yunnan University - Multimodal Human Action Database (CAS-YNU-MHAD) to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of MCEFE for human action recognition.
